Anis and Euphie now live together, but Euphie is still coming to terms with the fact that her role in society has been completely written out. While she grapples with that, the kingdom is under siege and there are still layers to Anis, but they turn out to all be terrible.

This is a rather generic isekai that elevates above its station because of two things. One, the characters are so damn good. Euphie is a sad sack for a lot of this volume, not without reason, and she literally has no idea what her life is for any more without anybody to tell her.

So her co-dependent plea to Anis is not unexpected, but the thoughtful response from her new friend IS, showing that Anis is not just the rampaging lunatic that people think she is. Just mostly. It’s all just a bit quieter than the first volume, but that’s probably for the best.

The fact that Euphie holds her own against the juggernaut that is Anis, who is poised to steal her own book out from under herself at points, don’t ask how that works, says everything about the quality of characterization. Euphie got dragged into this, but she is learning that she gets to have her say in where it goes from here and it’s good, good stuff. Basic, maybe, but no less well written for it.

Yes, Anis is positively ludicrous. She is a fireball that somehow flew through a crate of oily rags on the way to whatever chaos she’s about to create. The secret third character is a huge help with conveying just how much energy she has and how much drive she possesses to see her goals through, even if that makes her positively manic at times.

And that secret character is the other reason this is so good - the art. I cannot imagine how this reads better as a light novel. I genuinely cannot. The energy in this book and the flawless way the art gets it across, combined with some of the best reaction shots I’ve seen in ages? I mean, it’s five star art and no mistake.

The idiot prince gets some development, nothing too shocking - he lives in the shadow of the wildly talented Anis, an unintended consequence of Anis being reborn from Japan, so he has become bitter and jaded. I always appreciate when isekai has consequences.

Mind you, this is also mined for deep comedy when the prince backs his father into a corner with a decidedly smart plan to get everything he wants, although they don’t know (but the audience does) that Anis is about to screw things up royally (sorry, not sorry). Waiting for the other shoe to drop in that moment is very, very fun.

The way the Anis and Euphie relationship is slowly ramping up is very sweet as well. Anis has goals, but she worries about her new friend. Euphie clearly begins to see something in her liberator, even if she doesn’t know what it is yet (you’re not convincing me that that isn’t a twinge of jealousy near the beginning!).

Combined with Anis’ nebulous end game and Euphie figuring out her life, plus the schemes of the kingdom at large, there’s more than enough here to keep the reader entertained, especially with that gorgeous art. I don’t think any one moment stands out as hugely impressive, but the package as a whole is great.

4 stars - generic is not automatically bad, it’s what you do with it that counts, and there hasn’t been a much better example than this story in quite some time. I’d watch these two do just about anything, so having it be high adventure is simply a bonus.

This continues the adaptation of the first novel. What I said in my review of volume 1 still stands.

In Summary

The story takes a sharp turn from breakup drama at the Aristocratic Academy to a monster stampede triggered by a dragon! The thread holding these seemingly disparate elements together is Anis’ personal quest to harness magic, though it is jarring to see her persona shift from single-minded magicology researcher to kills-obsessed gold-level adventurer. Yes, it’s still interesting, but the plot feels like it’s all over the place.

The Review

Volume 1 focused mainly on Princess Anis’ unconventional outlook and the rules of magic. Euphyllia served primarily to provide Anis with a damsel to rescue and to provide readers with a model for how conventional magic works in this fantasy world. However, the opening pages of Volume 2 slows down to provide more of Euphyllia’s perspective on the events thus far. Her sudden fever and subsequent sickroom scene feel forced, but they do the trick of allowing her to reflect on the abrupt changes in her life and position. Unlike Anis, Euphyllia is extremely sensitive to how others perceive her, and her conversation with the maid Ilia gives a sense of where she is emotionally right before the action revs up again.

And that action comes in the form of a massive monster stampede triggered by a dragon! The tone suddenly shifts from otome-sim to fantasy adventure, and Anis reveals herself to be a gold-rank adventurer registered with the adventurers’ guild. Thus the politics of royal engagements take a backseat to knights and adventurers on the front lines of a monster attack. Of course, this provides Anis with the perfect opportunity to try the results of her research as well as an excuse for the narrative to expand on more magical theory–this time about the magicite found in monsters. If you’re not interested in those technical aspects of the story, you can simply watch as Anis “The Marauder Princess” goes berserk on the battlefield, which is apparently par for the course for this reckless royal.

Meanwhile, back at the palace, we get some insight into Anis’ brother Algard. When he publicly dumped Euphyllia, he came off as a royal jerk or possibly a royal dope. However, his conversation with his father about the approaching dragon insinuates that the prince has an inferiority complex and that his behavior is driven less by animosity toward Euphyllia and more by resentment toward his sister.

Extras include bonus art on the inside of the cover and the first page printed in color.

Euphyllia still ponders on what she should do now that the pressures of others (or what she thought others would want) are no longer on her shoulders.

In the meantime, a stampede is heading close the Kingdom. Princess Anisphia being a high ranking adventuring looks forward to seeing the stamped to not only collect sample from the defeated monsters but also getting a demon stone from the dragon that is causing the monsters to flee.

Her father, the King, thinks back to what caused his son and daughter to distance themselves. His son wants to kill the dragon for his own reasoning.

So far, I am enjoying this. I am curious what will happens once the two siblings try to take down the dragon since they have their own goals. He wants to be known as the dragon killer. She wants to be able to use magic. There were some funny moments. Anisphia will have to explain the side effects of the drug she made.

It’s cute, but I feel like so little happens each volume. 😅 I might be better off just waiting for it to finish up and binging…
