Syr confessed her feelings to Bell at the Goddess Festival and received his answer. It wasn’t the one she wanted but the Goddess of Beauty isn't about to let her mark escape so easily. Freya appears before Hestia with one request—hand over Bell.
Freya is tired of waiting. She's decided that if she can't have Bell through fair means (or at least "fair" in her mind), she'll resort to foul. And the very fact that she takes this path shows the biggest flaw in her character: she may think she'll do anything for love, but the reality is that she's selfish. It's nothing more than that.
If you think about it, you can see that this has always been the case. The clearest indication is how she worked to separate Allen from Ahnya. Her brother was all she had in the world, and Freya manipulated him with her charm until Ahnya was basically all alone. She used her Syr persona as a way to toy with the lives of others, until it was no longer fun. Freya doesn't care about anyone but herself.
There are some interesting discussions to be had about how the virgin goddesses are the only ones immune to Freya's charm power. The book only names the big Greco-Roman three (Hestia, Athena, Artemis), but the implication seems to be that Hestia and her brethren aren't captivated because they lack sexual desire and/or knowledge. Aiz's reaction seems to fall in line with that, because Aiz is barely aware of her own feelings. Bell, as the ultimate innocent, is protected by Hestia's power as the goddess of the hearth, and we see this again when she invokes Dio Aedes Vestas, Latin for her circular temple in Augustan Rome, turning the whole of Orario into her realm.
This is hard to read at times, because it seems to draw out the agony far longer than it needs to. But I love the character work and the way that it brings home everything Omori's been hinting at about Freya since the beginning. I'd definitely suggest reading Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Familia Chronicle Light Novel, Vol. 2: Episode Freya before this, but even if you don't it's very much worth it.

I’m not a big fan of this arc. It’s boring and depressing. Freya is unlikable and her followers are dull, but she isn’t a proper villainous so it’s not much fun to see her go from sad and depressing to empty and pathetic with her 3 stupid forms. And all for a 14 year old boy! It’s actually pretty creepy how many old ladies go after him. Isn’t this the 3rd god or goddess already?
Last time, because Bell rejected Syr's love confession, she ran away somewhere. While feeling guilty, Bell went home, but an irregular development has occurred. The strongest military group, "Freya Familia" has done a surprise attack on the Familia Bell belongs to, the "Hestia Famila." Like a cruel sound, the "Hestia Familia" was completely wiped out. Everything is done for the sake of the goddess, Freya. To steal Bell, she doesn't care what method she uses. Even if it means fighting Ontorio, she still wants to take him. However, what is the reason for this ending? Why does Freya like Bell that much? And why does the ever-calm goddess seem a little lonely and sad? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first impression was that it was "amazing." It really was simply that great. This series, Danmachi, is always interesting, but this time, it was especially awesome. The first seventy percent was pure despair. While Bell always finds himself in dangerous situations, I couldn't find any threads of hope in this scenario even as a reader. I felt like, "Eh, it's already over, right?" However, the last thirty percent was wonderfully done. Before you know it, you can strongly hear the sound of "hope." The unexpected developments and Bell's growth—all of them were great. This novel was a little long, but the plot was more than enough appealing that I didn't care about it all that much.
This is my first time reviewing a volume in this series and boy was it a good one.
The last volume left us with a serious plot twist and a bit of a cliffhanger, so this volume starts with action. Always encouraging. Then it goes somewhere the series has not gone before, it turns into something of a psychological thriller.
Our main character Bell is dropped in a scenario where he questions everything around him. What is real and what is fake? Who are his real friends? There is something very “disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” about it and it works great! Its also one of the longer volumes of the series and its clear that Omori Sensei has worked very hard on it.
The next volume might take a while, given that it isn’t even out in Japan for a while yet, but i look forward to it nonetheless. It feels like the coming culmination of the Freya arc is going to take a lot of effort and should be well worth the wait!
My knowledge of Japanese is very limited, neither do I have a copy of the book in Japanese so I am not going to blame the translation for why this book isn't getting a stellar review. It isn't, because it just isn't worthy of it.
It was a difficult book to read -- but not because of the writing (or translation). It was difficult because the plot was difficult to accept. Without spoiling anything -- something BIG happens in Orario without any seeming repercussions. And we're told that many times, over many pages, and that any wrinkles will be ironed out. That's the first 1/3rd of the book. Had it been the first 1/30th of the book and the plot had moved on after only the 10th time being told... maybe it wouldn't have been so bad -- but by the 100th....
Because of this event, Bell is being gaslighted and trying to be persuaded of things that are not so. There's an awful lot of that going on until a few small cracks and wrinkles appear things start to change as you figured would have to happen.
It just didn't feel like DanMachi like I'm used to. I really enjoyed volume 16 and what was revealed there. This sorta builds on that, but in a way that I didn't particularly care for. I'm hoping that 18 will pick up a new arc, or at the very least finish this one off with a BANG.
An interesting plot but quite complicated. Hard to follow at times, with confusing dialogue. I think part of this is a poor editing of the translation. This book could be better with a strong editing and polishing of dialogue and plot. Some parts take from the story, like how many time they mention battles to the death, or death threats, but at the end no one dies. The love triangle between Freya. Horn and bell is just confusing, it could improved if the author would have developed more this. Also, I believe this arc should have been a spotlight for Freya and Hestia, but it feels like their characters didn't grew or improved. Hestia keep being a buffoon, which is a shame, as this was a good opportunity for her to shine. A good book overall, with a weak and complicated plot.
In the aftermath of the Goddess Festival, Freya decides to try a more direct approach to get control of Bell Crandell. What follows is Bell being on his own in the home of Freya with no help, and lots of people working against him. This volume makes the ending of the previous volume, make more sense. While at ties the book was almost painful to read, it was enjoyable. There are a few thought puzzles that get solved creatively. It does a good job of setting up the later volumes. It does seem like the series might be reaching an conclusion soon. Maybe the talking monsters will make an appearence again.
I'm not a complete fan of what the author did here, but that's fine, it was still an interesting book and i was pleased with the ending. Really hate Freya and her familia now, especially the high level bunch.
The translation on this one is possibly the worst in the entire series, so that's less good. I'd prefer to give it 3 and a half stars, but you can't.
This volume went really dark after the fun chaotic date in the previous one, and it's for the best. The situation really was dire, but in a completely different way than the usual dungeon delving. I also liked the different characters perspectives, the author is usually very good with these but they went even further to highlight to f*cked up situation and feelings involved. Can't wait to continue on to the next volume.
Such an action-packed volume in what is becoming my favorite light novel series of all time! Such brilliant insanity as Lady Freya turns Bell’s world inside out! I don’t want to say more that I might ruin the experience for another reader! My heartfelt thanks to the author Fujino Omori for this epic volume!
Absolutely awesome! Volume 16 was a bit boring, but completely necessary to set up 17 in all its greatness. Great storytelling, great plot, great character development. Really really liked it!
Bell continues to grow as a character againsts all odds. He maintains his strength of character and purpose despite all odds. I love how he drives women wild without even knowing he's doing it. Looking forward how the next war games solves the unanswered questions.
Look, at this point is basically obligation. The writing is still so-so, or at least very different in structure. I'm here for the adventuring and magic stuff.
This is a continuation of the Syr arc, in which Freya successfully steals Bell away and warps the whole world and her own heart as well. We explore more of Bell and Freya's relation and see him get trashed around by Freya Familia and also his body and spirit crumbling while he still fights. Absolutely loved the psychological horror parts of this book (second only to Vol 14 in the series among the few volumes I read).
The conclusion of the light novel paves way for the next big thing. A WARGAME.
