Experience the graphic novel adaptation of the prequel to Cassandra Clare's best-selling Mortal Instruments series in one complete omnibus!
Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again. Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.
City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.
This was such a good adaption of The Infernal Devices. It has been a while since I read the series, so I might not remember everything but this manga was very fateful to the source material.
I just love this story and characters. Whether it's the novels or manga; it's just so good! It's Cassandra Clare's best work to date.
The artwork was great. Detailed and does a great job of portraying the setting and time period. My only gripe was that some of the hair was ridiculous. Specifically Tessa and Jessamine's, their hair was down to the floor. It made me giggle a little.
Now I want to reread the novels...
Pre-Read: I'm curious to see how this holds up to the novels.
It was so much fun to read the entire trilogy in manga form - and even with a lot of the prose that Clare is known for not part of the books, the humor, drama, angst, suspense and friendships that are a part of the books still make it across in the manga format and it was great to be able to dive back into the world of The Infernal Devices.
nothing will ever compare to my golden trio and no other story will make me suffer as this one. Now i just HAVE TO read the trilogy all over again because this manga leaves out a lot of details, a lot of dialogue and a lot of feelings so… i need the books to suffer properly.
If there is a life after this one, let me meet you in it , James cartairs. ✨
A wonderful illustrated version! The art style is not my absolute favourite to be honest; there are times where characters are drawn really beautifully and times where it's not very clear and hard to make out but overall, it fits the story. It's accurate to the parent story and summarizes the story quite well. There's a good balance of comedy, plot progression, emotional scenes, etc. If I wanted to re-read TID but didn't have the time to read the original novels, this is a really great way to do that. *Spoiler* Other than the art sometimes, the only other thing I didn't love about this trilogy was that they didn't show the children in the ending :( I haven't read the original in a while but I believe they actually described the appearance of the children, so I was looking forward to seeing them :( But other than that, a beautiful adaptation of a beautiful series! <3
TID my love, I will never not love you! I’m really not capable of consuming this story without wanting to cry every 5 minutes but I love it so much and the art is so pretty too!! Loved this!
Absolutamente hermoso.
What a marvelous read! This was a very thick book that was highly uncomfortable to hold while reading, but it was worth it! I loved the manga style illustrations, I loved the story, I loved the characters, basically I loved everything about it.
AAAAAAAAH DA IGUAL EN QUE VERSIÓN LEA ESTA HISTORIA ES IMPOSIBLE NO ACABAR LLORANDO DE CUALQUIER MANERA!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
The Infernal Devices The Graphic Novel Adaptation Review!! So this graphic novel adaptation is of the three books in the Internal Devices series, a prequel to the Mortal Instruments series. I thought to myself "Sweet, I can knock over these three books pretty quick with this version". So l cracked into it. I can tell there is a truly amazing story being told here. However, the manga adaptation doesn't do the story justice. By the time I read through the first book of the trilogy, I really wish I had read the novels before this adaptation. This manga is definitely made as a quick reread for those who have already read the novels. Because the big climax scenes are over in one page and you don't feel the suspense while reading. So I would definitely say to read the novels first as I should have! However, you can still tell there is an amazing story line being told within these hand drawn pages. It has made me want to jump into the novels as soon as I can. It has the classic storytelling we've come to love from Cassandra Clare and the Shadow Hunter world she has created. I will say you can jump straight into this prequel series, but prior Mortal Instruments reading will help a bunch since those books do most of the world building!! Now the art from Hyekyung Baek......it was dogshit. I know I've just came out of a Berserk binge reading and Kentaro's art style in Berserk is a masterpiece. Hyekyung's art style has every character looking the same with very similar looking hair and some pictures they change the hair colour and it can get a bit confusing. There wasn't a single panel that I was amazed by. While the Mortal Instruments graphic novel adaptations art was done by Cassandra Jean and is much much better.
Buenas buenas, hello there!
While I loved the story and the character art, I felt like the manga adaptation missed out on several key storylines and moments from the novels. I think the characters/storylines that suffered the most from this is the Jessa romance, Sophie’s character arc, the Sophie-Gideon romance, and Cecily-Gabriel romance.
I also felt this was hard to follow along bc the manga doesn’t explain anything. If I wasn’t already familiar with the Shadowhunter world and I’ve read the novels before, I would’ve found it hard to understand. Would not recommend to people who’ve never read The Infernal Devices as novels or any other book from the Shadowhunter world.
The story is just as I remember. Beautiful. Heartbreaking and perfect.
The epilogue is till this day the best epilogue ever. Did I cry? Yes. I loved every second of it.
The art is stunning. I loved the comedy of it I think it captured perfectly the humor of Will and Jem. The art of the boys?? Absolutely beautiful. Loved that this was a manga, the style is perfect for the story.
As a fan of the original series, I loved this! My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that I don’t love the art style. This omnibus is a great way to get into the shadowhunter universe if you are intimidated by the size of this series. It will make it fast and fun, and I definitely think it is worth the read.
I enjoyed this as a quick way to refresh my memory before I start reading the sequel trilogy The Last Hours, it only took me about 3 days which is faster than 6 weeks reading all three books. I've found though as much as I like the concept of graphic novels, for me, nothing will ever beat the actual novel length book.
