Compiled by award-winning journalist Colm Keane from the Irish faithful, this extraordinary collection of stories is crammed full of the miracles and cures attributed to the esteemed saint commonly known as Padre Pio. There are accounts of scientifically inexplicable recoveries from cancer, heart disease, and brain damage, along with revivals from blood clots, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and life-threatening viral infections. Personal testimonies from Irish pilgrims also recall trail-blazing journeys to San Giovanni Rotondo in the 1950s and 1960s, while visits by devotees to Padre Pio’s beatification in 1999 and his canonization in 2002 are vividly recounted. This detailed account documents the widespread influence of this complex and intriguing Italian saint.
I really enjoyed this book because unlike other books written about this saint, we hear the stories of Irish people who prayed to him and how their prayers were answered.
I loved reading about the first Irish pilgrims' experiences in Italy in the 1960's. How different it was then and how difficult their journeys were.
There are several accounts of the wonderful volunteers who take Padre Pio's mitt to sick people in hospital and I will always be grateful to a very kind Capuchin Friar in Cork in May 1989, who brought one to my very ill mother.
An opportunity was missed to interview the countless number of Nurses who are privileged to smell the perfume after Padre Pio has visited the sick in hospital. I know that when I worked in Cork Regional Hospital in the 80's (now CUH) he visited frequently and it was accepted unquestioningly that he had just paid a visit when Nurses entered the room and smelled the lingering beautiful aroma.
As a Nurse I saw several mistakes regarding medical issues in this book. This may be attributed to memory alterations over the passage of time. I'll just mention one. A survivor states she had diaysis 4 times a day for a year which is inaccurate. A pity because errors like this unfortunately can make the stories appear fabricated to those looking for faults. So, for that reason, I docked a star.
To sum up, I loved the book and appreciate the generosity of those who shared their very personal stories. Thank you.
