As Davey O’Shea works as a sparker for Nikola Tesla, implementing his wireless electricity technology to the streets of London in 1888, he is also on the lookout as a detective for Scotland Yard during the peak of Jack the rippers gruesome spree. Visited by a strange man one night out on the job, Davey is presented with the legendary sword, Excalibur, and upon touching it, learns he is a descendant of King Arthur himself. Now armed with the knowledge of his famed ancestor, Davey joins forces with other descendants of the round table to search for king Arthur’s true nemesis. Always two steps behind, however, and with more of the rippers victims piling up, Davey must find a way to get ahead in order to stop both past and present adversaries.
The author does an incredible job of transporting you into this time period and while you may know the stories of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and Jack the Ripper, by the end you too will be wishing you could pick up Excalibur and help the characters out! I loved the variety of characters that you really get to know and come to love and laugh with and sometimes laugh at. I had a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know if we would see a victory from our main characters or what would happen! If you like a bit of mystery, fantasy, and want to transport yourself out of the stressors of our current world this is the perfect book for just that!
*I recieved this book in exchange for a review but all opinions are my own.*
A fun read that mashes up the Round Table and Jack the Ripper. If you enjoy being surprised as you read, and following characters hunt down bad guys, this book is for you.
This book was a page turner. Old England, knights of round table and jack the ripper make for a very good read.love how the author inner molded everything in this book.Loved this booked.
It's a really fun read, it combines a lot of mythical history with an altered Reality about Tesla, to create a really interesting universe. Highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed the world the author built in this novel. New concepts such as the Sparkers combined with a Jack the Ripper thriller made this an exciting and interesting read. I look forward to the story continuing in the second book.
Great book. Different take on the king Arthur story! Look forward to reading more! Definitely recommend for anyone into King Arthur or fantasy stories that take place in the 1800s
I’m sort of a slow reader so it took me awhile to finish, that didn’t stop me from being glued to this story for hours at a time. Beautiful descriptions of actual buildings and places in London.I love horror and this has even Action to keep you involved and the perfect amount of humor. Jakobus has resurfaced and taken control of people’s minds using them to cause havoc. Jack the Ripper is one of them cutting through Victorian era London. Oh and the book includes some great artwork spread throughout. Who doesn’t love picture books?!
I really enjoyed this book, mainly because the setting and atmosphere were pretty much exactly to my tastes. It was easy to become invested in Davy and the interesting narrative revolving around the descendents of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Great book for anyone with an interest in Victorian era fiction with a fantasy twist.
A killer premise in this inventive historical fantasy novel! Barrett mashes up so many of my absolute favorite tropes and stories here, with some fascinating historical figures. Nicola Tesla! The Arthurian Knights! Some others that I won't spoil!
It's a very fun and cool idea. I did find myself getting a tiny bit bogged down in just how many different stories there were, but it's an incredibly original and thoughtful premise. If you, like me, enjoy English literary history, and might like to see many of its greatest stories come together into one fast-paced and well-written book, I recommend Lamplight!
BOOK: Lamplight AUTHOR: A. David Barrett PLOT: Davey is a sparked for the Tesla light bulb in 1888 London. Jack the Ripper is doing his murderous acts. Davey also is a part-time police officer and a part-time worker in a museum. One day, a mysterious sword is put in his possession, and when he touches it, he finds out he's a relative of King Arthur's. It is now his mission to find the other relatives of the Knights of the Round Table, and it is their job to put an end to King Arthur's nemesis, and save London! This book was beyond amazing. There was humor, action, mystery, suspense, and plot twists! I can't wait for the next installment!!! RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I stopped by a table at a mall in Janesville, Wisconsin and bought the book signed from the author. The book, Lamplight A Keepers Novel, is awesome. I put it on my bookshelf to be read after I finished reading scores of others. There is a word that describes my addiction to collecting books: Tsundoku. I only wished I read the book earlier. The descriptive style allows me to be fully saturated in the setting of the story. I can actually close my eyes and see and feel and smell and hear the surroundings. The plot invites you to tag along a conflict that spans generations.
Lamplight is a great read if you like a sprinkle of history mixed with a healthy dose of fiction and fantasy! I quickly found myself rooting for the descendants of King Arthur and couldn’t put the book down! Can’t wait for more Keepers Novels!
Stop browsing and read this book! This is a book that I enjoyed from start to finish. This is a great balance between fantasy, speculative fiction and suspense. A. David Barrett provides lots of great visuals without being too wordy. Even though it’s considered to be fiction there are plenty of acuret depictions of real locations and events. I've not read anything similar. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more books from this author.
Great read i have a hard time finding a book that keeps my interest beginning to end. This book did just that you really get into the time period, and the characters it is just really well written. The story is great cannot wait for the next book in the series.
