As COVID-19 surged in Los Angeles, Judy and Amanda were newly-licensed physical therapists called to assist in the intensive care units during the biggest health crisis of their lifetimes. Healthcare workers saw floods of patients with COVID-19 overtake their facilities as hospitals entered “disaster mode” to prioritize bed availability. In an all-hands-on-deck situation, Judy and Amanda were thrown into the chaos of the intensive care units, tasked primarily with turning and proning patients but ultimately facing so much more. In this collection of true short stories, Judy and Amanda reveal the deep physical and mental struggle of their new role, as they cared for critically ill patients alongside a community that strengthened them through the toughest time of their lives.
AMAZING! So proud of my former PT school classmates Amanda and Judy for their willingness to step up and assist on the front lines of COVID as well as their courage to publish the agonizing details of their time in the ICU. Having shared the same educational experiences as Amanda and Judy for 3 years during our PT training, I can picture the magnitude of the task they were faced with as physical therapists. As PTs, we are not taught to cope with that much death… typically our patients are expected to recover. I can only imagine the toll this took on them each day and what residual effects must linger for them and every healthcare worker with similar experiences.
This book is a must read for everyone, healthcare worker or not. We must all work together and be smart to get through this pandemic… healthcare workers cannot mentally or physically afford to be put through this again.
Judy and Amanda have done an excellent job in telling about their days in the Covid ICUs. Completely out of their normal workday, they jump in with their whole selves to help with Covid patients. You get the sense of how awful it really was at the height of Covid hospitalizations and how they used humor and relied on those around them to make it through each day.
