Orcs hunt their prey. But human women conquer hearts.
Once I saw the human female, I knew she was for me. A bond made before time began. Our hearts beat as one. Her soul recognized mine. We sparred. Touched. Tasted. And then…we feasted.
But her people are new to our world. They are lost. To make her mine means protecting her tribe. Fighting for them. Killing for them. I will do it gladly. Even if it kills me. Because without her love…
Athena Storm is the pen name for two authors who fell in love with writing science fiction romance as they fell in love with each other.
She's the Athena. And he's the Storm. Athena hopes that one day it won't be a boyfriend/girlfriend writing duo, but a husband/wife team. But she's not pressuring at all. Not one bit.
Science fiction is the biggest love for the writing duo, and they've been doing the writing for quite some time now, building a universe that readers can get lost and explore in. Filled with big bad alien warriors, sassy human women who give as well as they get, hilarious situations, and enough steam to melt stars!
The duo have created the Athenaverse, where all books in all series are tied together. You can start anywhere but once you do, you'll want to explore them all!
When they get married, they plan to continue writing science fiction romance forever. But again, no pressure on the marrying part. Not at all. (Not like writing Happily Ever After ALL Day won't give you any ideas on its own, right?)
I liked the premise of this story well enough, but something felt like it was missing and on the whole it fell a little flat for me. Having a background as a biologist myself, I was not a big fan of Penny and had a lot of trouble believing she was a scientist who was on her way to a colony on the frontier. She did not seem interested enough in this unexpected new world and it’s inhabitants, never mind passionate about discovering and cataloging the flora and fauna - she even screamed at the sight of the freshly caught critters for their dinner! 🙄 Her conversations with Vjala were often rude and even supremacist at times, and to me, the romance seemed to come out of nowhere as I did not feel the chemistry and feelings building up between them. Not to my taste, but others may enjoy this quick read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is my second Athena Storm book. I hadn't planned on reading another one, but then I got an email letting me know another arc of theirs was available for review and I thought, why not? I really didn't like the first Zoe Chant book I read, but then I gave her a second chance and ended up really liking her stuff. So, while I could not stand 'Maid for the Alien Warrior' and the very weird racist message of the book (namely that sex with hot women cures racism...are we not over that weirdness? We didn't get it all out of our systems with Pocahontas and Avatar?), I thought I'd give Athena Storm alien romance a second chance.
I'll say this, I liked this book much better than 'Maid for the Alien Warrior.' There was a lot to like here and I'll cover that first. Firstly, I liked the hero a lot. He was very sweet. I liked how gentle and protective he was. I also really liked the world-building. For such short romance novellas, Athena Storm books do have some interesting and vivid world-building elements. You can tell that a good deal of thought goes into the worlds of the Athenaverse, from the planet's geography and terrain, to the history, to the different political conflicts. It's all very immersive and I have to give Athena Storm some credit there. I think the world-building is far better than anything I could ever do. For the most part, I also really liked the chemistry between the FMC and MMC. It didn't feel forced or rushed. It was mostly very sweet and tender. Lastly, the POVs are distinct. Both Penny and Vjala have distinct voices. It always annoys me a lot in a duel-POV romance when the FMC and MMC sound exactly the same and their POVs are basically indistinguishable. That's not the case here. Maybe it's because Athena Storm is a team of two people, but the POVs were very distinct and I appreciated that.
Now, for what I did not like. There is a very pro-colonizing message in this book. Penny claims that Earth is so perfect that she must spread the ways of Earth to all the "less civilized" planets. Hmm....sound familiar? Seems like a talking point straight outta Victorian era English Empire. This didn't really surprise me, considering in the only other Athena Storm book I read, the hero is incredibly racist against humans and allows them to live in squalor and poverty....literally in racial ghettos, and he doesn't see anything wrong with this until he bangs a hot human. Such problematic ideas make their way into Athena Storm books. Science Fiction has long been an allegory for real world social and political issues. That makes it important to comment on problematic elements of these texts. And even if I wasn't going to draw a correlation with the English Empire here, I mean....outside of the context of real world history, it's just pretty messed up to assume that your culture is superior and then set out to thrust it onto unwilling people. Penny is a Nationalist, but on a planetary level. An Earth Supremecist.
Maybe I'm supposed to just turn my brain off and enjoy the ride, but I really can't. I also think fluffy just for fun novels can be the most dangerous with insidious and problematic ideas, because of the notion that we aren't supposed to think about them too hard or take them seriously. We're just supposed to accept them. Which I cannot do with the weird pro-colonizing message of this book.
My second biggest issue with this book was that Penny has no respect for Vjala's boundaries. When she has a fever, she gets naked and tells him to get naked so that she can get some of his body heat. With the clothes "in the way" she'll never get warm enough. Um...pretty sure that isn't how it works. Is this really coming from a scientist? But anyway, Vjala says no. He's incredibly uncomfortable with this. Yet Penny doesn't care about his boundaries and pressures/cajoles him into it.
Okay, you may be saying, but she was really sick, she HAD to pressure/cajole him, because her life was at stake!
Well, what about the next couple of chapters? She continues to get naked around him, despite the fact that he's clearly uncomfortable with it.
Then she kisses him (while naked...like a weirdo) and he expresses discomfort again. He's uncomfortable, because he isn't sure if she really cares about him or if she's just attracted to him because he saved her and has been protecting her.
This is a valid concern. This is him saying "Hey, I don't feel properly emotionally bonded to you yet. The thought of sex causes me discomfort at this point." Does Penny accept and understand this like a grown adult? No, she goes running and crying into the jungle.
This is some real Nice Guy TM stuff. Can you imagine a man pouting and acting "hurt" because a woman says she doesn't feel comfortable having sex yet? He'd be lambasted. Penny should be lambasted. That was despicable behavior.
Overall, I did like this book better than 'Maid for the Alien Warrior.' I'd have no complaints if both main characters respected each others boundaries and consent was clear and enthusiastic at all times, and if colonizing was presented in a more negative light.
I’ve loved all the books this author has published so far and I look forward to more in the future but I do like my Orc books and this book just made my must read list. Penny Ark is a scientist and the admirals daughter who is heading for a new world to discover with 12 others but fate steps in and sends there ship and all the escape pods into a worm hole where they crash land on a strange planet but when Penny comes to and finally gets out of her pod which is away from the others she see’s huge alien men collecting and knocking out her people and throwing them over there shoulder’s but they haven’t seen her yet and when they hear her she runs and three of them chase after her and when she is caught a bigger alien saves her but she doesn’t understand what they are saying and heads back to her pod to get the translator and some other things. Now two of them a dead the last one keeps fighting and now with the translator she can understand what is being said and the evil one tells the other that they found them first and the food is there’s and will feed them through the white season, there going to eat us omg I need to save my people. Vjala is a lone Orc that has stumbled upon other Orc’s collecting strange pale people that he knows will be eaten by them but then he spots one on it’s own and hopes it will be quite but it doesn’t then it runs and that’s when he realises it’s a female and decides to save her but he not sure why but he must. To keep her safe he takes her back to his home and soon they begin to talk and Vjala wants to hear more about Penny and her people and her world as well as teller her about his. The instant attraction between them is causing issues as the learn more about each other and get closer and when Vjala tells Penny that he will save her people but he must return to his clan and get there help but he must defeat his uncle first for his rightful position as the chieftain of the clan. Everyone welcomes him home except for his uncle and soon a challenge is made and the fight starts and soon Vjala is the victory and he’s the new chieftain and so they celebrate his victory. With the help of some of his trusted friends they go with gifts to barter with to save the other humans but in the end the have to fight the other clan and once Vjala kills there leader they surrender and take the humans but leave the food for the survivors. Now back at his village Penny runs to make sure all her people are there and are ok and then thanks Vjala who she loves with all her heart and who feels the same way about her. What happens between Vjala and Penny and the lives of people in this clan, do they get saved or not. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Penny was the Fleet Admiral's daughter who joined the colony ship. On their very first space jump, a wormhole opened up which threw them off their course. Penny was rushed to an escape pod. She loses consciousness after the pod is launched. When she wakes up her pod has crashed on an alien planet. She exits and sees her crashed ship surrounded by escape pods. As she is investigating, she sees huge green aliens who are prying her crewmates out of their pods and carrying them away. Then she is discovered by another orc who fights off the first alien. Penny's translator finally starts to work and she hears herself referred to as prey. Terrified she runs of but the 2nd single alien, Vjala chases and catches her. Even though he frightens her, he is willing to keep her safe.
Vjala has been living on his own in a cave for several years. He left his people after his father the king died because he was too young to lead them. He doesn't want to fight and is happy living and hunting on his own until he runs into a strange alien, a human named Penny. After seeing how helpless she is, he is determined to protect her. The other tribe is collecting Penny's people to have food over the winter. Vjala is planning to keep Penny safe. The more time he spends with Penny, the more he starts to believe that they are meant to be together.
Penny has finally gotten to leave Earth. Away from the ever-present security details and out of her lab to finally see the realities of space and life on another planet for herself. But she has no more gotten started when her ship is suddenly sucked into a wormhole. Shoved into an escape pod and sent into space alone, she awakens to find the ship has crashed and all the other pods have been torn open and are empty. Where is everyone?
Vjala has been surviving on his own on Kinshara for many cycles. While hunting for food, he sees Orc from another tribe as they rip beings from some kind ships and carry them off. He also sees Penny emerge from her pod and wander right into trouble. He manages to save her from the foraging Orc, but now what is he going to do with her? She is obviously unable to fend for herself if left alone. Can he manage to keep her safe when she is so curious and headstrong? And what of her companions who will not be kept alive for long once the cold season comes?

I loved this story. I was excited to read an alien orc romance by Athena Storm and I was not disappointed. This was a fun adventure with a story that hooked me from the start. Penny is a scientist and on a spaceship in it's first space jump when a wormhole opens. Being the admiral's daughter, she is pushed into an escape pod, but an explosion blinds her. She regains consciousness on an unknown planet with ship debris around her. Vjala is an orc living alone and sees the crash. Another orc tribe captures the humans in the pods intending to keep them as food sources, but he finds Penny alone and rescues her. Great world building. I was fascinated by the planet and those that lived there. Vjala and Penny are such wonderful characters. I loved watching them bond. I'm so excited for this new series and can't wait for the next book! 5 stars.
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Penny & Vjala. Penny is use to unusual things in her life being the daughter of an admiral. The thing is though she wanted to make her mark with science. Getting sucked through a random wormhole and having the ship destroyed on an unknown planet was not the way she thought it would happen. Vjala sees the ship falling from the sky along with the escape pods. When he sees other Orc's taking the humans for food he feels like it isn't his place to step in. When he sees Penny though he will fight to the death for this woman though he doesn't know why at first. Can they get a HEA or will it all just be too much?
Another amazing story by this author. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Penny a scientist joined a colony but before they can space jump a wormhole has opened up in front of them Penny gets pushed into a escape pod then Penny blacks out when she wakes up she’s on an alien planet then she hides behind the rocks when she hears heavy footsteps. Vjala an orc living on his own watches something fall out of the sky he see’s a thing coming out it’s like him but very small, Vjala takes Penny into his care and over time he becomes attracted to this small human female. There is so much more going on in this fantastic story and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.
Penny has wanted to venture out of her lab and explore what is out there in space for herself. But the ship she is on is drawn into a wormhole and the escape pods crash.
When Penny awakens, she see the other pods torn open as Orcs take the women to use for a food source over their winter. Penny runs and has to be saved by Vjala who has seen the other Orcs taking the pale creatures away. He is able to save Penny, but he has to return to his clan to get more help if they are going to save the other women. Will they be successful? Will Penny fall in love with her hero rescuer?

Great world 🌎building by the author . The novella is written in first person which I don't like, but at least it is also from dual points of view. There is a preview at the end of the next book n the series.

Penny is a human that crash-landed with her crew on Kinshara, Kjala’s planet where everything is large and dangerous. Everyone, except for Penny, is captured as food for an Orc clan. Penny is saved by Kjala and the adventure begins. This story is fraught with differences and the way it is overcome by first, a translator, and then by trust. A truly good story about solving differences.
Claimed by the orc king by Anthea Storm. Because without her love… I’m already dead. A brilliant read great story and characters. I loved Penny and Vjala. I loved the cover too. 5*.
I liked the characters and how the story just keeps moving forward. The story doesn’t drag on and on which I like. Sometimes authors but too much extra plots which can stall the original story but not Athena Storm she keeps it moving. The only thing I didn’t like was the shortness of the story and how I turn the page and the story has concluded. There is a lot more to explore in this book, for example, interaction between the humans and orcs, more orc characters in the village, Penny and Vjala’s relationship and more.
Claimed By The Orc King is book one in the series Mates to Alien Orc Kings by author Athena Storm. An intriguing tale of discovery and fate. A new world- a new species- a new love. From the first moment of danger- he came to the rescue- she showed him that she wasn’t fragile. Now they need to trust to save the others. In the meantime things heat up. Enjoy!!. Orcs seem to be the new thing these days. I actually picked this up because I got it confused with a different series. But I am glad I did.
I didn't particularly like Penny. But I thought Vjala was interesting. I liked the world-building that is being set-up and I think this book is a good start to an interesting new series.

ARC Review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Wow great story on the uss meriwether departing from earth penny ark a scientist and daughter of fleet admiral ark begins there journey when a wormhole opens up and they crashes on kinshara . this is what happens to her.
This time, orc’s have invaded the Athenaverse. Actually, human’s have crash landed on their planet, making first contact in both horrible and humorous ways. I enjoyed the development of Penny and Vjala’s relationship - starts innocent and sweet, but grows into a strong blaze. An interesting spin on Orc lore.
The author has taken us to another time and place to pull us into the lives of Penny and Vjala. The story keeps us turning the pages with fear, danger and action. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I so enjoyed Penny and Vjala’s story. This was a great story with a wonderful storyline. I enjoyed the way the characters interact together. There is adventure and exciting moments with a HEA nd a twist into the next story. Can’t wait for more.
She is human whose ship crash to his planet. He is Orc..who live alone.... but to be with her..he have to save her people...and that means to became a king of his clan... but he will do anything for her... I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After having to bail out of her spaceship Penny lands on an unfamiliar planet and is rescued by an Orc called Vjala. Penny's follow shipmates have been captured by a tribe of Orc's to be used as food during the winter. Penny has to convince Vjala to help her. Steamy romance.
This is an interesting story, which could have been much longer. I felt it lacked details that I would have enjoyed reading. We got lots of the human, Penny being rescued by Vjala, but the other parts of the story seemed to be background rather than part of the story
Another great Orc story. I love stories with happy endings. It was a short but enjoyable read. I can’t wait to read the story that follows it. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was different from other Orc stories I've read, but I loved the character development. Athena never disappoints! The two MCs overcame differences and difficult circumstances to get to know one another. Their story was wonderful. Loved it!
I got caught up in this story of survival and love. Penny starts off lost and helpless, but she grows with the help of her orc. He was sweet and kind of a dark horse, but I loved his depth. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series!
Sweet slow burn romance between an Orc warrior, Vjala, and the human scientist, Penny, who crash lands on his planet. While he is a warrior and protector, Vjala is a refined Orc who is interested in who this human is that has come into his life. The attraction slowly grows between Vjala and Penny, but he wants to protect her even from himself - when things due come to a head, the action is hot and steamy. Depending on what you're looking for, I would consider this to be more of an Orc romance rather than Orc erotica. There's lots of action and adventure from beginning to end and some violence, but nothing too extreme.
