Rate this book
Bestselling authors Ellie Crowe and Scott Peters tackle the mysterious Winchester House during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake in this latest installment of the trailblazing I Escaped series.

15-year-old Jesse longs to be a famous news photographer. What better way to get started than by sneaking into the haunted Winchester House and snapping photos of the weird place? But once inside, Jesse and his friends become lost on staircases that lead to nowhere and in hallway mazes with dead ends. When the house starts to jolt and sway, Jesse is convinced that spirits are at work. Little does he know they're caught in one of history's most significant earthquakes. Bricks are tumbling down, and walls are moaning. But his inner strength is seriously tested when he's trapped in the tilting mansion. He's no superhuman who can knock down walls. He's just a kid! This was a cute children's book, and it had an interesting way of presenting it. Historical fiction. Some kids sneak into the Winchester house in san jose during the day of the 1906 san fransisco earthquake. They meet up with a lot of ghosts and Have narrow escapes. Then the earthquake occurred and parts of san jose and parts of the Winchester house where destroyed.

I have been to the Winchester house. It was interesting, if you like that sort of thing. Sarah Winchester, the wife of the famous Winchester who produced the rifle, Lived alone in the house after her husband's death. It is thought that she believe that the demons were after her, blaming her for the death that Millions of Winchester rifles Head caused. Said that she used the Ouija board and also continued to build on the house for as long as she lived. Stairs would open to doors And he knows doors doors and doors and doors we I think a demon just took over my keyboard because all the sudden my words do not make sense. End of review. Easy to pick up a stray ghost.

This one was so much fun! Kept me racing through the pages, hoping everyone would be okay.

Spoiler: the dog 🐕 lives

Would have loved to see Jesse's photographs.

Winchester house is such an intriguing place, and Sarah herself. Definitely want to visit one day to see it in person and just take in everything.

Do you believe in ghosts 👻? I do, and I've had some experiences myself. I remember that I always believed in them.

Would recommend:)

If you want a MODICUM of historical accuracy, or even just "thematic historical vibes," this book ain't it. The authors clearly just wanted to write about modern teens and... so they did. (A TEEN GIRL CHEERLEADER? IN 1906?)

Exciting and creepy

This book was a very exciting and creepy read. Based on true historical events and places, the story was captivating and brought me inside the creepy Winchester House with detailed descriptions and intense action. Each chapter left me in suspense wanting to know what would happen next and if they could make their escape safely. I like the relationships and friendships in this story as well and makes the reader root for Jesse, the main character, who longs to make his father proud and his brother to be nicer to him, like before. His desperation to get a picture of the spirits and mysterious things in the house leads him to many dangers and unexpected disasters. When the earthquake strikes, he feels guilty for dragging his cousin along with a 4 year old boy. How will they make their escape? Will they survive? Will they ever see their family and friends again? Read this book to find out!

This book was just ok for me. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it but it just seemed to be eh for me. I thought this book and the others in this I Escaped series would be very interesting. Plus, I have read other more exciting types of books that were so much more interesting. For example, the I survived series by Lauren Tarshis, any juvenile and young adult books by Dan Poblocki or Mary Downing Hahn. Those authors stories will grab you and not let go. I may give the rest of the books in this series a try but it will be a long time from now.

I just noticed it took me a month to read a juvenile horror book. Not good.

Nice

It was a very interesting book and had exciting surprises with every new page. I would not recommend it to people who don't like creepy stories though, because there are a lot of ghosts involved. Other than that, it's a great book and I learned a lot about history and earthquakes and the Winchester house, so I would recommend it to you.

Amazing and Exciting read

I decided to read this to my 6 year old twins. We loved it. My kids kept asking me question about where noises were coming from and asking me about the characters. It was suspenseful for the children. It probably wasn’t for their age but we loved it. I think it’s a great read for children to keep them excited about what’s next.

It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. The ending is what ruined it for me. I read this with my daughter and she lost interest towards the end as well. Just seemed like it didn't match the same energy as the rest of the book.

This is obviously styling itself against the "I Survived" YA series. I like the style, but this looses points for being derivative.

It was a good for book for young readers that want to read scary books, but are not quite ready for it. Just enough scary and lots of action to keep you reading.

Easily the worst book I’ve ever read, and I’ve read A LOT of bad books. Honestly couldn’t believe the words playing out in front of my face, the writing was so bad.
