My parents met at the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival back in 1995. They'd been together ever since until I lost them last year. For years, they'd kept in touch with the matchmaker who introduced them, and now I'm traveling back to Ireland to set a wrong to right. I didn't expect to meet the fiery granddaughter of the matchmaker and have her set me alight as well. She, of course, wants nothing to do with me, until I get the most unlikely endorsement.
Maeve O'Sullivan
I've taken care of my grandfather for as long as I can remember. He went a little wild when his friends betrayed him, and I've been the one to pick up the pieces. Now, the son of the people who caused his grief is here to try to make amends. Well, if he thinks I'm going to just let bygones be bygones, he's got another thing coming. The only thing getting in the way of me telling him to take a long walk off a short pier is that he's all I think about. He's worked his way into my heart, and I'm just not ready for that. There's no way I'm going to allow myself to fall for the enemy. Am I?
Beginner's Luck was a quick read featuring a romance between a man who goes to Ireland to find his parents' matchmaker and the matchmaker's granddaughter.
Brendan MacLeish's parents met at a matchmaking festival in Ireland in 1995 and were together until their deaths a year ago. For years, the couple kept in touch with the matchmaker who introduced them only to lose touch after a business deal fell through. Wanting to meet the matchmaker who introduced his parents, Brendan heads to Ireland only to find himself instantly drawn to the matchmaker's granddaughter Maeve O'Sullivan. Maeve has taken care of her grandfather for years and after the betrayal from his supposed friends, he's never been the same. When Brendan appears, Maeve is determined to dislike him only to find herself falling for him more each day.
The premise of Beginner's Luck sounded pretty cute but ultimately didn't work for me. While I liked the idea of the matchmaker bit, the reality is that the author decided to make it something magical in the family which wasn't what I was expecting as it seemed like it would be a family business type of thing. Add in the fact the way the matchmaking magic works is a bit odd and I just wish that it wasn't included at all. Brendan and Maeve's romance somewhat followed the love at first sight trope which isn't one that I enjoy, so I didn't like that aspect of their romance. Also the author skips forward several weeks after their first meeting which while I understand this is a novella, that basically put all of the relationship development off page. I also feel the need to point out there were a lot of typos and grammatical errors which were very distracting for this being so short.
Overall Beginner's Luck didn't work for me and I don't think I'll be checking out any other books in the Get Lucky collection after not liking the first two.
I got this from a Stuff Your Kindle event. The premise was interesting but this was so short that it was difficult to get a feel on most of the characters and the relationship development wasn’t really shown since it was so short.
There were a lot of typos that distracted me as well. Not bad, but this needed to be more fleshed out. I did really enjoy the St. Patrick's Day theme and Jack as a character.
Beginner’s Luck was simply adorable. It’s a story about true love and a match maker who has the gift of finding people’s soul mates.
The end makes this book 18+ but it’s a cute read and the sex scene really is kind of tame compared to others. It didn’t feel overly sexualized or unneeded. It fit right into the story and felt like a natural progression for the characters to take.
The story takes place around St. Patrick’s Day so it was a great romance to start St. Paddy’s week off with.
Stuff Your EReader Find! A Short as sweet story with a dash of spice at the end. I'll be honest if they wanted to keep it sweet the entire time I think I would have loved it just a bit more. The premise and idea was such a treat to read and at the end of it I kinda wanted more into their interactions and romance. (aka the characters were loveable).
I picked this up on a stuff your Kindle day. The only good thing about it was that I got it for free. The writing was not good. There was little to no editing of the finished book (missing/random quotation marks, random numbers within the text? misspelled words or missing letters, etc) and the story was just...not good.
I absolutely loved Brendon and Maeve story, her grandfather was my favorite character in this book. To see who you are destined to be with at such a young age, their book was so beautiful and I'm a new fan of the amazing Bree.
This was so cute and funny. Grandpa James is a hoot!! The shocking surprise between Brandon and Maeve I was not prepared for. But I loved it nevertheless. Like I said. Short, sweet, and too cute.
This is a short story with a lot of feelings. Couples destined to be together find each other in a small Irish town. A hot quickie leads to a happily ever after.
Weak, dull. Proclaim their love for one another, he confesses he lied about his last name and who his parents really were. Next thing you know they're married and knocked up in the epilogue. Just no.
