From the prize-winning author of A Hundred Veils - Nebulous Enemies is a suspenseful story of love and intrigue in Afghanistan as aid workers fear the looming withdrawal of American forces protecting them from the Taliban. In Baltimore, Roger's wife suddenly disappears, and although their relationship was never normal, he leaves the States to pursue her in Afghanistan, suspecting she has run off with Lyle, a U.S. contractor working there. In Kabul he is shocked to find out the horrible crimes his wife and Lyle have committed. Lyle threatens Roger's life, and Roger finds that Lyle is also a danger to Sophie, a Belgian aid worker who teaches Afghan women. For them, Lyle is an even more immediate threat than the Taliban bombings plaguing the city, and Roger's goal is now to save Sophie and himself. Nebulous Enemies is a condemnation of the corruption of some mercenary overseas military contractors and a testament to the bravery of the idealistic aid workers who remained there to the last minute trying to help the Afghan people.
I love fiction and nonfiction. Lately I've been reading books set in countries outside of the U.S. I've been a teacher all my life--at the University of South Carolina, Voorhees College, and the University of Tehran, as well as schools in Japan and Greece. I taught English and World Literature at a community college for many years. My doctorate is in Comparative Literature.
This story started off with a mystery as to where Roger's wife went. In his attempt to find her he travels to Afghanistan. That's when he meets and falls in love with Sophie. That was a bit rushed! The book was just ok for me. Thanks to LibraryThing's Early Reviewers giveaway for this free book and the opportunity to read and review it.
This is the third book that I know of by this writer that is set in a foreign country. Other reviewers have called it a page-turner, and they are right. I couldn’t put it down.
An enjoyable book that you don’t want to put down. Roger, a timid teacher at a catholic school doesn’t have much luck with the ladies until he meets Jill. Jill is a former solider that now works for a company that does contract work for the U.S. Jill is secretive about her job but tells Roger one day she will have money . Jill and Roger marry soon after meeting. Jill goes missing and Roger decides to go to Afghanistan to find her and her work partner. In Baltimore a solider has been found dead but has not been identified Roger is sure that Jill is the unidentified solider. Roger meets Sophie a teacher in Afghanistan, who is living in the same house with Jill’s partner. She is teaching the women there. Roger falls in love with her. There is suspense, intrigue, murder, crime and love. A lot of interesting information on Afghanistan. I received this book from the Library Thing in exchange for a review.
I won a copy of Nebulous Enemies by Rea Keech in a LibraryThing giveaway.
Roger who is an American marries Jill. Jill works as a operative for the US military is always just up an leaving for a "mission." Roger does not know anything about her job other than her partner is Lyle White and they work for Grayrock.
One day Jill comes home to a threaten note on their front day and then disappears. Fearing she left him for Lyle, Roger books a flight to Afghanistan with Omar, an Afghan, he met through Lyle.
While in Kabul, he meet fellow teacher Sophie. She is living in Lyle's villa. Roger and Sophie form a relationship. He also learns the truth about Jill and Lyle's work as well as they have set him up to be the fall guy should anything go bad.
I really enjoyed reading this story and seeing how things are in Afghanistan from an American, a Belgian, and an Afghan point of view.
Roger's wife (Jill) suddenly disappeared after a note was left on their door. He finds she ran off to Afghanistan with Lyle, a U.S. Contractor working in Kabul. Roger sets off to Afghanistan to find her.
Once there he meets Sophie, a Belgain aide working to teach Afghan women. Things take a dangerous turn, as he learns the truth about Lyle and Jill. Sophie and Roger are no longer safe and (He) must fight to safe his life and Sophie's.
A fast pace intense story with an intriguing plot and interesting characters. Engaging dialog and attention to detail, I was on the edge of my seat. Nebulous Enemies is (an) emotionally charged, thought provoking, action filled thriller. I recommend to all.
Review: Nebulous Enemies by Rea Keech. 3.5 05/13/2022
This is an Early Review Book that I received in the mail without requesting. The book was pretty good with minor flaws. The beginning was a little fast and not enough information on the character Jill. It’s like Jill meets Roger and next she moves in and then right away they are married. A short glimpse of Jill and than she takes off and the story keeps Roger and the reader in suspense to where she went. He only knew her and a guy named Lyle White worked together. Jill is not seen again until three fourths of the book is read.
Roger does go looking for Jill who led him overseas. Roger does find out what Jill was messed up in and soon thought she was dead. I take it that Jill is a corrupt person something about laundering money that was also embezzled by Politicians in USA an Afghanistan Fund for contractors to help the people in Kabul.
Than Roger meets Sophie and quickly fell in love and the story goes on with more interesting issues happening in Kabul. The story was good just fast pace on adjusting to the characters to the point of their backgrounds. The author needed more information describing each of the characters and events and happenings through the story.
Roger's wife, Jill, disappeared and was thought dead. She lived a life that Roger knew very little about but when he found out her occupation, he was stunned. In the meantime Sophie came into the picture while teaching i n Kabal during the war. The attacks by the talliban took its toll and a wonder of Sophie and Roger together is wondered. This sure was a page turner
This book was interesting in that it mostly took place in Afghanistan and involved criminal activity and deceit. I did not feel that the characters were well developed and felt no empathy for any of them.
I enjoyed this book. It is fast paced and keeps your attention. I liked reading about Baltimore and learning about Afghanistan as well. Overall, another well written book by Rea Keech.
This was a LibraryThing Early Reviewers win. That program requests an honest review in exchange for the book.
This is an author I haven't read before. Obviously, something in the summary intrigued me to request it. When I first started the book, I wasn't sure what that had been, but it did improve to the point where I'd sometimes catch myself wondering what was going to happen between Roger and Sophie during times I wasn't reading the book.
I will have to leave it to more knowledgeable people to say whether the details of Afghanistan are correct. I did expect the book to have a bit more about the teaching and/or aid workers work than it did.
WARNING: SOME INDICATED SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW--SO READ MORE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION *****
Some of the main characters aren't well-developed. Jill: all we seem to learn about her is that she steamrolls Roger when they first meet and apparently has no moral compass. Lyle: seems to wink a lot (at everyone)--we're never really told if this is a tic, an affectation/mannerism, etc. He also seems to have a penchant for boys/young men (in an area of the world where I don't think this is looked on favorably, but again, I will have to leave that to those more knowledgeable about Afghanistan than I am to say).
I was disappointed by Roger. I might forgive/understand having sex with someone outside of marriage once. Alcohol could have dulled his inhibitions or judgement, and Jill seems a formidable force. But then he repeats this behavior with Sophie a number of times (again, in an area of the world where this probably is not considered acceptable behavior by a woman). Roger also just assumes Jill is dead with no proof--and despite knowing that he has to wait a year to petition for divorce without proof of her death, he starts a relationship with Sophie. Technically under the law, he is still married to Jill when he starts romancing Sophie.
I don't think I will seek out other books by this author.
