It’s pointless to haunt an empty house, any ghost will tell you that.
That’s what I’ve been doing since I died, existing in a space devoid of life. A huge house with no living occupants. Just me and three other ghosts with no memory of our lives before this. An endless monotony of ghost hunters and maintenance men are our only forms of entertainment.
Until Sophie Covey moves in.
We should keep our distance. We should scare her until she flees the house in terror, but she calls to us like no one we’ve seen before, a beacon in the dark of our endless existence.
The more we’re around her the stronger we get, the more we can manipulate our surroundings and interact with the girl who glows like a flame.
After hundreds of years of death, we finally feel like we’re coming back to life.
Sophie
I’ve spent years thinking I’m crazy.
To be fair, seeing people that don’t exist and having conversations with them? Yeah that’s pretty damn crazy.
But when I inherit a house that I had no idea my parents owned and move in, strange things start to happen--disembodied voices, flickers of images and random strangers just popping up out of nowhere--I start to think that, maybe, I’ve never been crazy.
Maybe I’ve simply been seeing spirits that no one else could.
The Haunting of Sophie Covey is a 90,000+ word full length dark paranormal romance novel. Includes foul language and sexual scenes; any sex featured is consensual. This is a reverse harem novel, meaning the main character has more than one love interest. This is book one of five in the series.
Ok so Writing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The writing in this book is much better than the other series by this author. I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t cringing heavily throughout the whole book. Take notes other RH authors. It’s ok to improve.
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 The plot was pretty good. No holes from what I’ve read.
Everything that happened in it: ⭐️ It started off pretty good. The male characters were kind, caring, doting while still being “alpha males”. I was really liking it until they got their memories back. It literally skydived straight to he11 after that. No pun intended.
They start treating her like an object. They disrespect her boundaries and violate her autonomy. She literally tells them over and over again to not touch her without her permission and they don’t listen to her. They think it’s ok to not explain anything to her bc she might react badly……?? Ok you treating her like a POS is somehow better???
I liked that the female lead stood up for herself….except she forgave them too easily at the end bc the biggest @ss of the group said ‘pLEasE’.
They have no excuse for why they didn’t at least attempt to understand where she was coming from. They have been living on earth for a very long time to not get caught up with the times.
And another thing they didn’t stop the biggest @ss from spanking her they stood there and got turned on by it. Are you serious???!?!?!
I’ll read the next book but if they don’t make an actual effort to change and right their wrongs….I won’t be reading the rest of this series.
It was better than I expected. FMC did get a little annoying towards to end. Her attitude started to grate on me but I pushed through. I will continue to book 2.
Meh. It wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly thrilling either.
The best I can describe this series with, are the emotions you might feel after you are finished watching all seasons of "Supernatural" back to back.
It was exactly like a soap opera, there were some twists which were good but the bad stuff made me so fed up that I don't want to spend precious energy to rehash it either.
It made me roll my eyes a lot, especially at Sophie (who was apparently so full with forgiveness that someone could cut off her hands and then sew them back upside down ....all she would say is Thank you and it's okay. )
All in all, it made me feel exactly like finishing a soap opera opera does.....I wasted 3 days of my life and I wouldn't repeat it but also, no harm, no foul. 😳🤡
I got bored of the tease of the ghosts being corporeal. Then they all had a one track mind of just wanting to fuck Sophie and play acting at being Alpha (didn't feel the vibes, it was more like 4 boys arguing over their toy), even over them escaping the house/finding out about their individual pasts.
I was more interested in the Paimon angle together with the not so pleasant adoptive family vibes coz there seems to be more to Sophie's history, but this was being presented as a drop of water when you'll literally die in the next 3 seconds in the Sahara.
Also some of the expressions that Sophie used felt like she came from the hip 70s.
I enjoyed this book! I was on the hunt for some ghost boys and this delivered just that so I cannot complain there.
This book is heart wrenching though, you’re going to fall in love with these men, then you’re going to hate them (a lot), and you kind of have to bare with it for the payoff (second book). So if you’re not in the mood to be jerked around by some hot hot hot ghost boys you’re going to HATE this.
If you do have it in you though this a fun read and a somewhat unique one too.
Like the premise hate the passive condoning of abusive
The story is nice and the smut is fine. Without giving away too much the male harem characters aren’t exactly what they appear…which is all an excuse for them to be incredibly emotionally abusive, and occasionally physically abusive. Of course they “see” the error of their ways but there is still a massive onus on the FMC to understand their perspective and past (red flag when your abusers can’t take responsibility for their actions). And of course it’s the personal responsibility of the FMC to not only save them but singlehanded dismantle the abusive culture that enables them (red flag when victims are responsible for creating change in their absuers). Yes, it’s fantasy and I don’t read RH necessary to see healthy relationships but the underlying messages of the story are still gross when you think about them.
Sophie is an energy source for guardian demons who protect earth from rogue demons who escape hell. Sources are typically treated as sex slaves by their guardians. Sophie did not know she was a source and grew up in and out of mental institutions her foster family put her in. When she meets her group of guardians they start out great, but the relationship quickly turns toxic in my opinion. They treat her like shit and it’s all justified by the fact they don’t rape her like most other guardians would. I kept reading the books thinking she would eventually put her foot down, but she never really stands up for herself and sticks with it. They apologize for something and she immediately takes them back and then they go back to being emotionally abusive. She turns to suicide because of them in one of the books and then forgives them and has sex with them less than 24 hours later. I haven’t finished the series yet, but I think it’s pretty clear the guys will continue being emotionally abusive and she will continue taking it. Having said all that, I think the author is excellent at drawing you into the story. I keep reading even though I’m insanely frustrated with the characters.

2 stars for a series that gave me the methapor of an abusive relationship, but both stars are for the potential that the story setting had and wasted
This series was like a metaphor of an abusive relationship for me. The beginning half gave me a great time and i was ready to fall head over heals for this series. But then it suddenly took a turn, characters changed their personality so suddenly it left me reeling. But I was having such a good time! Maybe it will get better? No, I'm sure it must get better! I know how much i liked the ml's during the first half!
And so the spiral begins.
It gets a bit better, letting you hope. And then it gets worse again, maybe worse than it was. But the author shows you that it can get better and so you hope again. You hope and you wait...And then it does get better! But only shortly, and then it spirals down down down once more.
At the end of book three I managed to break myself out of the spiral and I was not happy with the time it took me.
The second star is for the great potential the story had. I really liked the world the author presented and having read Darkly Ever After right before this I was rather excited despite the mixed reviews.
Another amazing read by Tana and I’m so excited we get book 2 so soon. That quad has some serious questioning of thoughts to do, it’s so much more than just a non communication I swear I want to reach into the books and smack each guy behind the head and say pull your head out of your ass!
Also. Can we talk about Lucifer. Kinda wanting him to keep Sophie for himself and see those boys fight for her. Not sure I can handle another quad having her.
I freakin love it! So, so good. Unique and interesting storyline. Sophie is my favorite type of girl. She is sweet, caring, smart, and fierce in standing up for herself. She is trying to step out of the protective and oppressive bubble of her foster family that is controlling her trust fund. She meets Vaughn, Killian, Jace, and Rome who need something from her. She is the most powerful of her kind in 500 years. Let me just say that Lucifer is hilarious. I Loved, Loved his involvement in the end. Can't wait for the next in the series.
Zaczęło się ciekawie. Później zrobiło się chamsko. Dziewczyno!
DNF 47% It started out wonderfully! I loved getting to know the main characters, and loved reading about them interacting. Once the guys got their memories back it went down hill very, very quickly straight into abuse territory. To be honest with you it was unsettling and a bit distressing to read. This has to be the most awful book I have read in a while, would never recommend.
I really enjoyed getting to know these characters! Sophie is a great FMC and I’m glad she’s making her guys work for it. Fantastic storyline and the writing is really good! I’m definitely going to read the next book!!
The usual tropes with a few good bits thrown in. Good concept but more of the usual. Maybe I've just read too much but there are parts of this story I've seen before. Ok read, that won't leave you feeling completely disappointed.
Some of the decision making by the FMC was a little frustrating, but that aside, it was an excellent story overall, the world makes sense and the character interactions are interesting and humorous. Sort of a Supernatural feel to it, but not in a bad way.
This book started ok. However once the MMCs got their memories back suddenly they treated her like shit. I am done. I hate that behaviour - their stuff is suddenly so much more important than explaining things to her. It really annoyed me. I abandoned this book at that point. 43%
This book made me mad! First of all, it starts with such a neat concept. A ghost RH? Sign me up! An FMC who can see all sorts of spirits? Okay! A creepy coworker who's a little too involved in the FMC's life? Yikes, but a nice plot device!
But then, about 40% of the way, the story and romance totally change direction... It becomes a really hostile situation for the FMC, where her independence is tossed to the side in favor of some greater purpose of these demonic entities needing to fulfill their roles as demon hunters... But the romance disappears. She's just a battery 🔋 for them, and none of the MMCs are on her side at any point. None of them think, "Hm, maybe the reason battery wives are so unhappy is because we treat them as appliances and not humans or partners. Why won't she let us touch her to recharge? Oh, perhaps it's because we're touching her without her consent." I could've dealt with this mindset if it had come at the beginning and evolved to be more considerate, but instead the MMCs started sweet and did a total 180 in an undesirable way. Boo. I won't be reading the next in the series.
