After destroying the facility inside Deliverance, Ahna thought The Delivery Company was close to defeat. When her group reaches the Rocky Mountains, she realizes the truth–The Delivery Company is far from finished. In fact, they are rebuilding, creating new and improved Elite, and preparing to finish what they complete control.

Now that resources are running low, relationships are falling apart, and Wallers show up at every turn, Ahna and the group realize there is no room for error. Every mistake could cost them everything. For some, it already has. She was supposed to be leading the group out west to join the larger community of the Gray Wolves. A task she thought should be simple. As usual, life has decided to prove her wrong. Every day, Ahna struggles to do what she can to keep her friends alive, but instead feels as though she is leading them toward certain death.

Stuck between bad and worse, the line between right and wrong is quickly becoming blurred. With their survival hanging in the balance, Ahna has to decide if she is willing to sacrifice everything and everyone she loves.

One wrong choice and everyone they are fighting for could become permanently Rejected.

Full disclosure: I assisted Lane with this novel and aided in the timeline of the plot. When asked if I would like to read updates, I declined and said I would wait for the final product, so I did not know most of the second half of the book. This is my honest review.

I am impressed with this novel. Being the second in a trilogy, it’s a lot of setup and explanation for the third book, but it never felt dry. Many things from the first book are explained, more foundations are laid for the eventual showdown, and relationships and various ailments are given more context. This group of Rejected is full of various disabilities and it’s an interesting look at how they are dealt with on a day to day basis. The relationships are really at the core of this novel. The way Ahna and Scorcher interact is so typical of teenagers and can set the tone for the whole group on any given day. Sticks makes a new friend in Wick and finds new depths to his friendship with Ahna. Corrine and Scorcher have good mother/son talks and we’re reminded that Scorcher isn’t an adult. Felan and Marie tiptoe around each other and avoid their feelings. Dune is given a place in a real family for once and that’s all he ever wanted. Even having read a good chunk of this novel, I felt the emotion through all of it. There is joy, heartbreak, grief, anxiety, love, peace, and rage woven into it. One particular death had me near tears. I have questions that I’m hoping the last installment of this trilogy answers, but that’s exactly what a second book is supposed to do. Answer some questions, but leave you with a few more. I’m excited to see what happens in the conclusion of this series and there’s one particular character I’m looking forward to seeing again (if he made it out okay).
