The Proxy Brides #65

A Bride for Wolf

Rate this book
Absence is to love what wind is to fire; It extinguishes the small, it enkindles the great.

A dying wife of three children places an ad in The Matrimonial News to find her replacement. Eliza Hartzell’s letter stood out from all the others as she already had experience with children, was a Christian, as well as a midwife. On her deathbed, her last wish was that her husband, Wolfgang, agree to treat this woman with kindness, if not love.

Unusual circumstances cause the marriage to be performed by proxy and when the couple finally meet, Wolf still holds his first wife in his heart, and Eliza backs away from any form of physical affection since her parents had never shown her any.

Will the children teach Eliza to love? Could a nasty bandit and some renegade Cheyenne bring this couple to a happily-ever-after?

AKA Barbara A. Masci & Barbara Masci-Goss

From Kindle Author Page:

Barbara Masci Goss is now just Barbara Goss. I live in Western New York State and have three grown sons, two step daughters and 10 grandchildren. I wrote my books in the early '90's and now that I'm retired I have obtained the book rights and am converting them to Kindle. That's exciting for me because I don't read paper books at all anymore. I have designed new covers with a new author name: Barbara Goss. My first two books "Captured Heart" and "Forbidden Legacy" went to a second printing in the mid '90's and the publisher added my name as Barbara Masci-Goss, but I now prefer to keep it short and sweet.

From Author Website:

I'm from Western New York, and I live with my husband and two cats, Mandy and Molly.

I wrote these books in the early 1990's in paperback. My publishers were Fleming Revell and Baker Book House.

Now, I have the rights and have put them out on E-Books so people can still enjoy them.

My goal in writing these books is to provide clean but still romantic and adventurous novels for all ages. I've always felt that we needed more clean, wholesome books. When I wrote these books there were but a handful of Christian romance writers. Now, thankfully there are more. My biggest influence in writing was Grace Livingston Hill. Enjoy.

This book is about a mail order bride who became a proxy bride. Picked out for her husband by his first wife before she died. Wolf swore to his wife that he would accept a second wife for the sake of his children and himself but promised to never love her. His first wife made him promise he would always treat his new wife with respect and kindness. Which wasn’t hard to do when he met her. Eliza never thought she would marry. But when her friend brought her a paper and suggest she become a mail order bride she had to consider it. Her friend was becoming a mail order bride and with all of Eliza’s sisters married she would be left alone to fend for herself. When she married her new husband as a proxy bride she found she would once again have a purpose in life, to read three children and care for her husband. She feared physical intimacy so when her husband told her the marriage would be in name only she gladly accepted this. Little did either know that love would blossom in the sweet romance.

A Bride for Wolf
The Proxy Bride Series
By: Barbara Goss
Narrated by: Jamison Walker

Handpicked by Wolf's dying wife, Eliza is married to Wolf by proxy. On her way to her new family, the stagecoach is robbed. But Eliza makes it to her destination. Now settling into her new home and life as a homemaker and mother, Eliza begins to feel comfortable. Not your typical bride by proxy, Eliza comes to her new life and is set straight from the start. Wolf will take care of her, but has no intention of falling in love. But how can he resist a woman who loves his children and takes such good care of him and his. And now that life is coming into it's new normal, Eliza sees the man in town that robbed her! A feeling of unease is apparent. Will he recognize her? Is danger lurking for her and the family she has grown to love? Wolf is a tough one. Setting boundaries is something he felt he needed to do, but that does not stop his feelings. Eliza loves her new life, and is slowly falling for Wolf too. Will these two find a chance at love? So much is at stake. Give this one a listen to find out what happens. Barbara Goss gives us just enough suspense to keep the story riveting and a love story that is nothing short of beautiful.

Jamison Walker is a new to me narrator and I think he is fabulous. Perfect fit for the western historical romance, he gives us a little twang, a variety of voices from old to young and just enough emotion to win our hearts. I enjoyed his performance and look forward to hearing more from him.

wolf, Eliza, Alice, Esther and Daniel

I this is a proxy mail order bride that’s a bit unusual. Wolf and his wife have three beautiful children and live a happy life. The only problem is Viola is terminally I’ll and she write a proxy bride advertisement for wolf so he and their three children will be well cared for after she’s gone. They receive about sixty reply’s and she picks Eliza for Wolf. Reluctantly he writes to Eliza for the sake of his children. After a short correspondence Eliza accepts Wolf’s marriage offer. They work their way through several ups and downs and finally agree to be a loving family. You will enjoy discovering how this family finds their happily ever after. I enjoyed especially at the end a short bit and finding out how their family does in the future.

A dying wife's ultimate sacrifice for her family. A testament of love. Eliza and Wolf come together as Husband and Wife by proxy under the hard circumstances, and yet, their hope is to be friends and raise his children together.
Eliza's parents didn't show her how to love someone. She has never had the expressions of love she see's between Wolf and his children. Will they be able to teach her to show the love she feels towards them?
This story will grab your heart and have you hoping that the children will bring out a love in Eliza and Wolf that will make their marriage shine. Must read.

The is a sweet and heartwarming story of a wife who is dying requesting that her husband remarry for the sake of their three children and that he treat his new wife well, and even going so far as to choose the woman to be that wife and mother. This is Eliza and Wolf's story, and the character development is excellent. Eliza is the woman chosen by the dying wife, and she and Wolf are married by proxy and Eliza heads to Kansas to fill the position of wife and mother. The story includes a stagecoach robbery, a kidnapping, amnesia, an Indian attack, danger, and romance. I enjoyed this outstanding story very much, and I know you will too. Don't miss it.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed this story very much. The narrator was wonderful.
The story was interesting from the very first paragraph. Wolf’s wife is dying and she picks out a woman from letters she received in response to her ad in the newspaper. I thought it was a great way to start the story of a proxy bride. Wolf was so kind and so was Eliza. I enjoyed the many twist and turns that happened.
A little romance, a little mystery and a murder makes for a great story. Oh and I loved the children.
I received an audiobook from the author but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

recognizing love

Beautiful story set in the days of stagecoaches and mail-order brides. It amuses me to think that women in their mid to late 20s were considered ‘old maids’! At 28yo, Eliza has raised her younger sisters and has married them off. Eliza is ready to give up on love and marriage, until a friend tells her about ads for mail order brides. She soon finds herself married to a widowed farmer with 3 children. The journey to an HEA is filled with potholes but well worth it. Well written story that was quite enjoyable.

What a wonderful story--romance, true love, adventure, all wrapped up to make a captivating read. I couldn't lay aside my iPod and listened to the whole book in one sitting. The characters are wonderful and realistic, skillfully created. I haven't read one book by this author that wasn't entertaining and inspirational; always sweet and clean. (And I've read or listened to many of her books!)

The narration is so good which makes the story even more delightful to listen to.

I requested this audio book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I listened to the audiobook of this story. Very enjoyable to hear. A dying wifes last request to her husband was for her to pick out a wife for him. Wolf could never love another woman he told her, but she finally accepted the fact he would need someone to take care of him and the children. She put a ad out for a mail order bride and Eliza accepted. Could they make this new marriage of convenience into something more, they put their faith in God's hands.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

When Viola realized that she was dying, she wanted to be sure that her family would be well cared for. She placed an ad for a mail order bride. She picked a letter and convinced her husband that this would be the right woman to help raise the children. Wolf reluctantly corresponded with Eliza and married her by proxy. Both Wolf and Eliza were happy with a marriage in name only.
I thought this story was great. It was a quick and entertaining story.

Such an amazing story

It's one thing to know that your wife is dying, but for her to choose her replacement, well, that is a huge thing to ask of you.
Knowing that there would be no way he could care for the children and work the farm, it was agreed that he would accept this new woman. Can they make a real home for the children?
I was so taken with this story that I read it through the night and didn't want it to end! Another wonderful Barb Goss story.

This was one of the best stories I have read in a long time. I enjoyed seeing how Wolf’s first wife knew she was going to die and chose his next wife, Eliza. Although they did not enter into marriage for love or having anything other than a mutual relationship, they learn to respect and eventually love one another. It all started with caring for the children. I received an ARC for my honest review of this book.

5* Plus!
It all begins with a dying wife who arranges a Proxy Bride and new mother for her beloved husband and children.
Oh wow! Nothing could possibly be more of a tear jerker for me!
Once again, Barbara Goss has pulled out all the stops and written one of the most beautiful and emotionally satisfying stories for us to read. I simply devoured it!
This is possibly one of her very best!
I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and my voluntary review is recorded above.

A proxy marriage with no expectations of love is perfect for both Wolf and Eliza, but probably not realistic for two sincerely nice people living together and caring for three young children. Barbara Goss hooked me from the beginning with a dying Laura picking out who she wanted to be a wife for Wolf and mother to her children. The situation and timing were perfect for Eliza. I enjoyed this book and watching the family come together.

A Bride for Wolf

I loved this book! I loved the way that the relationship between Eliza and Wolf slowly developed, even though neither expected love, especially after all the trauma they both went through. A heartwarming story, that also includes some old west drama. A book that I recommend to everyone, especially if you like western historical romance. Another great book by author Barbara Goss.

A Bride for Wolf: ( The Proxy Bride Series )

What a wonderful book. A dying mother picks a mail order bride to be with her family. The bride and groom do marry by proxy. The three children take a while to warm up but come to love her. The family has many things happen.
A stage robbery, amesina, bullet wounds, Indian attacks, blizzards; but finally a happy ever after.

Sweet Historical Romance

This was a great story, but I was left with several questions. Maybe I just need to read more of the series to get the fuller picture. I loved how the first wife prepared her family's future!
