"...very good storyline, exceptional." [Audible reviewer] "I loved the characters so much. I wanted to be a part of their family." [Amazon reviewer]
This one was fucking amazing, GO AND READ IT Outlander meets Peaky Blinders I loved everyone in this, well the characters that matter Roseanna amazing fmc, but ngl I don't know how she survived because she was beaten up many many times 🫠 Danny, I fucking love him and his relationship with Roseanna, and appreciate that there were a lot of moments of them just being together 🥺 Ends in cliffhanger though
Safety: No ow drama, THANK GOD. I was worried because of the time but NOTHING, no manwhore either!! Danny's work focus. We do get Roseanna and him exchanging storys of how each of them lost their virginity. OM drama. Yes. But ngl I don't give a fuck. In the present Roseanna has a boyfriend of two years called Richard and that's the whole point of her going back in time, because she was going to meet him for a party, but there's no love, I mean they don't even see each other that much because they work and all. I think they are together just because. What else🤔.. So Roseanna almost gets rape and she gets beaten up many times..
It feels weird for me to give a book that ends on a cliffhanger 5 stars but honestly this book was amazing and I finished it in less than a day. I was looking for a Peaky Blinders esque romance novel and I stumbled upon this one, I can’t recall if just from Google or BookTok but either way I’m happy about it. Roseanna is a paramedic from 2021 who somehow winds up in 1921 with a Gangster and his family. Danny is a bit morally gray but a very likable antihero. The story spans over six months of time so the romance is budding and not super quick. It definitely has some spice but for those who aren’t big into spice it won’t over power the story either. The time travel aspect is Outlander ish in nature but also different. It also has a thriller aspect to it in a “who dunnit” kind of nature. I honestly just really loved this book and it pains me that I have to go to bed and not just start the second book to know how it ends. I think the only reason I don’t have a book hangover right now is because of the cliffhanger ending. It also made me laugh and cry which is why I think it’s deserving of 5 stars. I’m sad to see it doesn’t have a ton of reviews on Goodreads but I hope my review sparks your interest into pick this book up. So, please read this book or series so I can discuss it with you as I am 100% recommending it!
I received this book for my honest review before it was officially published! I am a very fast reader, however, when I got this book I also had a very very difficult, and very busy couple of days at work that left me drained and without the energy to read, so it took me longer to finish it!
If you love outlander then you will definitely love this book, it has romance and 1920s glam and gangsters as well! It was very easy to read and I just wished I started it when I wasn’t super stressed and had a full day to simply get lost in these pages!
Thank you Ophelia for trusting me with your book, I can’t wait to read #2!
Characters: 3.5 stars. I love their potential more than anything.
Story: 3 stars. Once I got to 40% I was hooked on Danny and Roseanna, but it shouldn’t have taken that long. I typically DNF around 20%.
Grammar/plot holes: 3 stars. I honestly didn’t believe the author hired an editor and just did it themselves until I read the acknowledgements. 🫣
I’ve been a fan of Outlander for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been obsessed with Peaky Blinders since I started watching it in June, so when I read that this would be a mix of the two, I jumped at it.
I really liked how Danny was his own character rather than just the “cut and dry” typical stoic gangster with a heart of gold. Danny wears his heart on his sleeve, which took some getting used to, but after the Big Bad admits this and compares Danny to himself, I saw that this characterization choice was intentional and I loved him more for it.
I did quite enjoy the intimacy between Roseanna and Danny, especially as they let their guard down, but in critical moments where the characters were talking, we didn’t get to know anything about their “deep conversations” that they had to gain that emotional intimacy, so I definitely felt cheated in my love for these two.
Unfortunately, there were more than a few spelling errors that threw me out of the story. Additionally, the author didn’t describe the setting well so halfway through a scene I’d be imagining happening one way, I’d have to re-read when the author gave us critical details to the scene so I could imagine it properly. Additionally, there are few details for what the characters look like. For example, I didn’t realize Danny was a foot taller than Roseanna until like 75% through it. It could have been that I missed those details the first time around, but I don’t believe myself to be a lax reader. I love imagining what I’m reading as I’m reading it. There were also some storytelling no-no’s, like introducing new characters in the last 50 pages of the book that were never mentioned even once previously. All characters need to be mentioned, even in passing at least once in the first 50% of the book.
Another thing to note is that there were times when there would be no break in paragraphs between two characters talking. I’d have to reread an exchange several times to understand who was talking. I think it’s easy to say that the grammar was the worst part of this read for me, and it was bad enough that I struggled to stay immersed in the story.
A couple other things that I wanted to mention: 1. Danny’s style of speaking changes. At one point he uses words I’d expect him to use in the 1920’s, like “Shan’t”, but also uses the word “cronies.” 2. She gets hit in the head with the barrel of a gun at one point. The barrel is the part where the bullet comes out of. She’d likely get hit with the grip of a gun, which is a lot more blunt and easier to hit with when someone is holding her against their chest (which is what the scene had described). Logistically it doesn’t make sense, and a quick google search confirmed this information for me. 3. Roseanna says Danny’s a monster/he’s ruthless, long before we see anything that cements this idea to us as readers beyond the fact that he’s a gangster. 4. Lots of telling, very little “showing”. 5. The fact that Roseanna has a boyfriend in 2021 isn’t mentioned for most of the book and the author only brings it up when it’s relevant again. As a reader, I completely forgot about this and I feel like it was a detail that could have been left out completely for how phased Roseanna was that she was falling for Danny even though the Boyfriend was waiting for her.
As a whole, I’m very disappointed in this read because this story has so much promise. Will I read the next book in the series? Yes, because I need to know more about these two - something that should have been accomplished in this book. I cannot promise that I’ll finish the next book though.
I didn’t realise how much I enjoyed a good time travelling story until I got recommended this! Red has been transported back to the 1920s in the height of gangster in London. After witnessing a murder all she wants to do is get home to her Nanna. Eventually she gets ingrained into the Oldemans lifestyle and helps to find Bennys killer. With her PTSD, Daniel helps Red discover herself, how to move past the trauma and find love. He accepts that she isn’t from this time and does his best to support her and getting her home. That cliffhanger ending though! Will Red make it home and back to her love Danny?
This is great time travel romance with some spice. Roseanna finds herself going through the motions in her life, wrapped up with her job as a paramedic and taking care of her ailing grandmother. Her sort-of boyfriend invites her to a party at a home in the country, which she reluctantly agrees to attend after a nudge from her best friend. But on the way to the party, an accident occurs, and subsequent events thrust her back in time 100 years, to 1921.
Upon her initial arrival back in time, Roseanna is unaware of what has happened. Things appear differently, everything seems off, and she stumbles upon an altercation that results in the death of a young man, to which she is now the only witness. As she becomes entangled with the family of the murdered young man, especially his older, enigmatic, and very handsome older brother, Daniel, she is torn between the desire to return to her own time, life, and family, and to stay with this new family, and love that she has come into.
The 1920’s imagery is very well done, mixing in an under privileged, hard working, and family rich community with aspects of a darker, small town mobster world full of drugs, intimidation, and political corruption. As Roseanne tries to do what she can to help unmask the murderer, she finds some aspects of life in the twenties easier to acclimate to than others. But the closer they get to answers, the closer her an Daniel get to each other.
This is the first book of a trilogy, so we are left with a cliffhanger - nothing earth shattering, but definitely leaves things open in a way that will make you want to come back for more. I really enjoyed the story overall, and the character and world building were done very well, while moving the plot along at a good pace.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review
London paramedic and care-giver for her sick grandmother, Roseanna Chapman, has her hands full. But when she is cast back in time and witnesses a murder, she finds herself stranded and in danger. In 1921 Daniel Alderman's a feared and ruthless gangster. He must rely on Rosanna to find his brother's killer, but with her hiding so many secrets, can he trust her or could she be the killer? The two connect as a race against time ensues, but as their feelings intensify, so des the threat agaist Roseanna's life and she becomes torn between the man she loves and her grandmother, who desperately needs her care. Can they navigate time and tragedy together or will their love become another cautionary tale of days gone by?
This is my first time ever reading a time traveling book and I have to admit I was hooked. Not only is it time traveling but there are mobsters and a romance. You are going to love Roseanna. I love a good strong female character. I think the world just needs all kinds of these strong character's. Roseanna is also a paramedic and takes care of her grandmother and is in a relationship. I don't see how the girl had time to do all the things she she is but she gets it done the best she can. On day she is driving to meet her boyfriend at a party. When she gets to the party though she has finds she is 100 years back in time in the 1920's and things are about to get crazy. The first thing that happens is she witnesses a murder and meets a gangster Danny Alderman. These two have an instant connection but Danny also wants answers to who killed his brother which is the murder she witnessed. No he is keeping her and they are going to find out who killed his brother if it is the last thing they do. But she also has a grandmother she is really worried about and has no idea how to get back to the time she came from. There is a lot going on in this book and I loved every single second of it.
It's been so freaking long since I had a book from this author to read. I really missed her books. Her previous books were amazing, super hot, and funny so I had big expectations for this one. Ophelia Lockhart is this sweet lady with lots of talent. Her writing is amazing and you should give her a chance. I was a bit reluctant to read this book because it's a genre that I hadn't read before but coming from this author I knew that I needed to read it. Songbird in the Storm is her latest release and explores Roseanna's life. Roseanna was abandoned by her mother when she was a child. For some time she wanted to know why but life got in the way and now she's a paramedic. When one reporter crosses her path, it opened old wounds but she's a strong woman that can conquer all. One night out and her life took a huge turn and now... I'm so freaking mad at the moment... So, so mad... This book crushed me and now... A cliffhanger? Seriously? You're cruel Ophelia... Why did you do it? I was so into the story that I didn't see this coming. Amazing plot, very well written, super engaging, and intense. Each chapter was even more addictive than the latest and I couldn't stop reading it. Scene after scene, punch after punch, I saw myself so into the story that I stopped hearing people around me. It was the first book from this genre that I've read and I must say that I loved it. This book gives us violence, crime, punishment, betrayal, as well as love, second chances and so much more. Guys, the hot stuff is amazing and will leave you panting. The characters worked perfectly with each other and you can feel what they are feeling in that precise moment. I really loved this book, minus the cliffhanger... I wanted to keep reading good non-stop. Great book Ophelia. Perfect in every imperfect way. Now go write the next one, asap. I need more.
Wow! Where do I begin..? This book follows the story of Roseanna Chapman, an overworked paramedic in London who is a little afraid to dive headfirst into making her life into one worth remembering. On route to a party in an old Manor House one night she crosses the threshold to the estate and is blasted back to the year 1921. Here she witnesses the murder of a child of the important gangster family who own the house and we play spectator to them attempting to decipher if she is friend or foe. The spark between Roseanne and Danny, the head of the family, was not written in an instalove fashion (you’ll understand why when you read) but their interactions glittered with a brewing and undeniable attraction. This book is dripping in suspense all the way throughout as one mystery leads to another which leads to another. The author captured the time period of the roaring twenties so well I often found myself considering what our life in 2022 would look like to a person from the 1920’s and vice versa. Or, how I would have reacted to situations back then (not a hope would I let a man dictate a thing in my life so, as you’d expect, not good 😂) This is a story that has etched itself into my skin and is now part of a select few books I have forever been changed by that I often catch myself replaying scenes from in my mind.
Songbird in a Storm is set in the 1920’s, this time travel romance will take you by surprise and leave you wanting more! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Not one of my normal go to genres, I found this book entertaining and intriguing. The beginning was a little slow for me because of the set up for the story and characters. Please keep reading, it’s so worth it! The writing style of Miss Lockheart is wonderful and kept me engaged from beginning to end. I’ll admit that some parts had me feeling angry because of the way women were treated back then. Those were the times. I can tell that the author put a lot of thought to making it authentic. From the way people spoke to how they dressed. I definitely felt transported by to the 1920’s. As the story progresses, events start to happen and the climax of the ending is fast approaching. I’m rapidly swiping the pages because I need to know what is coming next. The boom, that ending. I did not see it coming and now I’m left with a book hangover! I need to know what comes next! Book two here I come!
If you’re a fan of time travel romance, this book is for you! I highly recommend it. Even if it’s not your type of read, check it out. A wonderful debut for this author! I give this 5 stars.
I chanced upon this book through Audible's recommendations for myself, and I can't sing its praises enough. At first, I was skeptical about the way she would pull off the time traveling aspect, as so many books I have read in the past have rushed past it without much detail or explanation. But in this book, it is part of the mystery and story that keeps your mind working in the background of the story it's laced through.
This story was one I devoured in every ounce of free time that I possessed, be it through audible (when I needed my hands) or the ebook (when I had time to just sit and enjoy). So, I must add to this review if you choose the audio book option, the narration was very well done, and it even made the characters and story come more alive in my head to the point reading them took over the voices the narration gave them.
If you're looking for a tale that has murder, mystery, love, and some suspense to it, with that historical aspect? Songbird in a Storm is for you. This book put me in mind of the show Peaky Blinders, though I'd pick Daniel Alderman over Thomas Shelby any day after reading this. You will not be disappointed.
Time travel, mobsters and romance - what not to love. I loved almost everything in this book: I loved characters, I loved that they made realistic mistakes and mostly I loved that Roseanna was so strong. I just imagined myself in her place and I know I wouldn't be as calm as she was. And when Danny did some stupid things and he did couple of them, Red didn't just stay meek and proper, she said what she didn't like and why, she communicated with him. And yeah I was angry at Danny during his 'stupid' moments and thought "how could you do that to her?" but then Red would 'explain' his behavior and ok I understand that but lets be read: if I was in her situation in different time, people trying to kill me and not knowing if would return home, I wouldn't be so forgiving and understanding. Generally plot was interesting with lot of surprises on every turn. And the best? Ending and sneak peak in book 2. I was so not thinking that this would be the direction the story would take. The book 2 won't come soon enough.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Roseanna is a paramedic in busy modern day London. She has experienced a few traumas in her life so she keeps herself busy caring for others. When she is finally forced to take a break and go out for a night, she crashes her car and ends up 100 years in the past, in the roaring 1920s.
As she goes for help, she witnesses a murder and is forced to stay in this time to help find the murderer. Will she be able to keep her secrets and gain the the trust of Danny and his family or will she be able to escape back to her time?
Songbird in a Storm is a well written story full of 1920s action and excitement. Crime runs rampant, but family values are everything.
While it was different than my typical read, loved the characters from this book and the plot was very interesting, and while the story may have been a little slow to start, the action continued throughout and was well paced.
If.you like time travel romance I would definitely suggest giving this one a try.
I'm not usually a fan of time travel romance, but this book was an exception.
The setting of 1920s London was so well developed and the author must've done a lot of research for it to be so rich. I liked how the main character Roseanna had to adapt to her new life, and how she didn't immediately just accept the situation.
The plot was very Peaky Blinders like, I enjoyed the gangster similarities. The love interest Danny was so similar to Thomas Shelby, and I was obsessed! The mystery behind the murder and plot was so intriguing. Though some parts were predicable, I still enjoyed it.
The family dynamics were also so well written, and I liked how they all fit together. The romance was also well written, the enemies to lovers and forced proximity was well used. It was a tiny but spicy which I liked, and it had a bittersweet feel to it.
The ending leaves on a cliffhanger so I'm hoping to read the sequel when I get around to it. I'd definitely reccomend giving this book a go, you'll be surprised!
Do you love to read early 1900’s era? Are you a fan of Peaky Blinders or Outlander? What about time traveling? Then this book is for you!!
Roseanna is a paramedic who takes care of her grandmother. She’s in a relationship and is driving to meet her boyfriend at a party. When she gets to the party, all of a sudden she time travels 100 years back in time to the 1920’s.
When Roseanna goes back in time, she witnesses a murder and meets gangster, Danny Alderman. There’s an instant connection, but Danny wants answers as to who killed his brother. He keeps Roseanna hostage, and they work together to find the killer.
Roseanna “adapts” as best she can in the 1920’s and while her and Danny try and solve the murder, Roseanna needs to get back to her time. She’s worried about her grandmother and has no idea how to get back to her time.
Ophelia Lockheart is a pen name for Emily James, who brought you Ten Dates. Emily James writes romcoms, and I recommend checking out Emily James.
If you love time traveling books, this is your book! The 1920’s era is a favorite of most and the writing and storyline nailed the era perfectly. I am not into time traveling novels typically but the love story of Roseanna and Daniel just sucks you in immediately.
The author really got into the 1920’s era and described it perfectly. She covered the under privileges of that time, hard working lifestyle families had to go through to survive, under educated children, mobster lifestyle and the politics. You got to imagine and truly feel the era while reading the book.
The bad boy Daniel that captures Roseanna and refuses to let her go until she helps find his brothers killer leaves you in suspense. Does she help Daniel to go back to 2021 or does she stay trapped in the 1920’s with Daniel?!
The killer cliffhanger leaves you in suspense and begging for book. 2, thanks for that Ophelia! ❤️
This is Peaky Blinders meets Outlander. Outlander for the time travel and Peaky for everything else. Paramedic Roseanna time travels back to 1921 England, where she walks in on the murder of Benny Alderman. Following is the hunt for Benny’s killer, and the introduction of Danny Alderman. He’s the leader of the Alderman criminal family who are trying to rebuild their name and wealth after their father ruined them. This is the 1920’s so there is violence, rival gangs, murder and woman aren’t treated the best. TW Roseanna does experience physical violence and near sexual violence. During all this, there is the growing attraction between Roseanna and Danny. I liked this book from the start and even though Danny is a bad guy, he is very likeable. There is a sex scene, and the book ends on a cliffhanger. There is a book 2, which I already downloaded to kindle. If you’re a Peaky Blinders fan, a time travel romance fan, or like gangsters and strong woman, give this book a read.
This is a mildly entertaining story. It's difficult to envision the main characters, but we see into the mind of the FMC due to her being the narrator. We only know the MMC through FMC's perception, which rapidly goes from fear to attraction. He turns out to be a good guy struggling to deal with ugly circumstances. Pretty much every scene is predictable: just like Jim Dandy to the Rescue, Danny manages to be there to save our heroine at every peril. After a while, it becomes simply a matter of trying to guess in what manner he will save her. I knew at the start that it is a series and would have a cliffhanger ending, so I have no beef with that. However, I didn't enjoy the book enough to feel moved to seek out the next installment.
Songbird in a Storm is a 1900's time-travelling romance, boasting well-rounded out characters and a solid, steady plot. I adored Roseanna's character and her strength throughout her trials. While she does grieve her previous life, she accepts her role in the Olderman family and tries everything she can to support others, even when she is mistreated.
Danny, Danny, Danny. This man does a complete 180 with Roseanna and I am here for it. His devotion to her is a slow-burn but once there, he is a man utterly besotted. Their romance and chemistry is wonderfully written and you find yourself empathising with Danny's troubles and the grief he holds on his shoulders.
I did a beta read on this book, which is not my usual genre, but I love the author so I gave it a go. I was hooked immediately. I love how she travels, and where she ends up. I like a good heart pounding story and this had me shaking at times. When I wasn't, I was either grinning, laughing or feeling hopeful. I love the characters, how they interact, and the way the story has gone. The 1920's was a rough time, and I can't imagine going from present times to then. Women had little to no rights, nor were they respected. I think she and Danny are able to help each other deal with both their private and public issues. Looking forward to the next installment.
This time travel romance is without a doubt the best I’ve read. The characters are well written and the story is engaging and had me hooked from the first chapter. Hearing Danny and Rosannas love evolve was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I am frustrated now and will not know peace until I know how their amazing story ends! Will they finally get their happy ending? Cannot wait for the next book and highly recommend anyone with a love of romance, time travel and the 1920’s era with some spice in tow grabs this and experiences it for themselves. Thank you Ophelia for giving me the chance to fall headlong into Danny and rosannas world ❤️
It was pretty good I guess until the "inclusion" crap. There's a point when a character is revealed as being gay and they actually say "gay" which I don't believe was a term used to describe homosexuals in the 1920s. And the overall acceptance surrounding it and the stupid buzz words and phrases just ruined it. What I mean by that is they treat the situation like they would in modern times and like it or not, that wouldn't have happened in 1920. Sometimes books just shouldn't try to pander to the Hive. If your story isn't all inclusive oh well, everyone can find another book, this isn't Disney.
⭐️4/5 🌶1.5/5 This book was so different than anything I ever read. I am so happy I took the chance and saw it through because it was sooo good. Ophella did such an amazing job at bringing you into the story especially with time travel. I wish I could go into detail but I don’t want to give to much away bc all the details she put In are what keep you guessing and making the story so amazing. This story is what I would call an old fashion spicy. Lol it has edge but with the feel of an old fashion romance. I can’t wait for book 2
I Beta read this book and got sucked in almost immediately. This isn't usually my type of genre to read but tried it out to help Ophelia(who doesn't like to be one of the firsts to read a book?) Songbird has romance, violence, time travel(that's accurate) and everything in-between. If you don't give this book a shot your seriously going to miss out!! Im ready for book 2 please
Songbird in a Storm has so captivating. I’m in love with Roseanna and Danny! I love the storyline and the love that develops between Roseanna and Danny. I was so invested to see what happens, I could not stop reading. I would highly recommend this book to any romance reader. I love that it’s set in the 1920’s. The authors details of the timeframe making the story come to life. Can’t wait for the second book!!
I really enjoyed this book. I love time travel books and I think the 20s is such a fun time period to go back to. The plot line itself was well laid out and I haven't read anything like it. The characters were cute and I liked the romance of the two main characters. There was enough drama to keep the intrigue.
It didn't grasp my attention enough to continue to the next book, but I did enjoy this book for what it was.
I managed to finish this, but it was a struggle tbh. Words used by the heroine that are fairly recent additions to the dictionary are somehow perfectly understood by everyone 100 years ago - "Gay" for example used to mean happy, and yet a character from that time understood the modern meaning. Grammatical errors, and unexplained anomalies in the story made this a very frustrating read. I won't be downloading the next one!
3.25⭐️ was looking for a book similar to peaky blinders, and this was definitely it! I liked some parts of the book such as the characters, found family, and the era, but there was a bit too much going on for such a short book and just lacking some depth to each topic for me. I found myself a bit bored at times and not craving to pick it back up and finish it. However the ending was interesting and made me want to read book 2 to see what happens and finish the story.
