One of my favorite books of the year.
“When you choose a stand like preventing our extinction, you twist every action you take into a moral one, and dismiss anyone who disagrees with you as a traitor.”
Deucalion floored me. I could not stop reading, when the theme was so powerful. There were no gray zones in the lands of Olympus, the most beautiful kingdom Aella had ever seen. The only kingdom. For the monsters were procreating like bunnies, overwhelming the chosen of the gods and leaving them with no choice but to devote their lives, their offspring’s lives, to war.
Thus, Aella, who had run from a monster and tried to suicide, was forced to join a jaded group of young soldiers in training. The lies she told to hide her secret joined with the lies and enmity of a ‘golden child’ named Alexander made some delicious interaction between the two.
I do love a dark dystopian kind of romance, and I loved every speck of drama. The world itself demonstrated a deep exploration of Greek myths retold in a new way, and I loved the powers the chosen demonstrated. What if you could emit pixie dust to enrapture someone? Or turn into a cow! LOL.
The characters are wonderful, too. I especially liked Sebastian as the mysterious guy who can play the shadows because I like a bit of mystery around people’s motivations. But others made me laugh (see Cow) or cry, too.
I asked to join her mailing list after reading this novel. Loved it.
