C'était Merkel

Rate this book

I actually have three different takes on this book.

First:
If you didn’t live through the Merkel era, stayed away from politics at the time, or barely know who Angela Merkel is, this book gives you a short but genuinely effective introduction. Van Renterghem’s research on Merkel is truly impressive.

Second:
While we get a very clear understanding of Merkel’s outer shell—her journey, her public persona, her political evolution—we never really grasp her inner motivation. The author’s almost overwhelming admiration for Merkel makes it difficult for the reader to form an unbiased interpretation.
A woman from the East German “Ossie” background, a scientist, breaking countless taboos, holding immense power for 16 years, and doing so with remarkably little corruption… it’s all admirable. But what did it mean to Merkel herself? The book never answers that.
Maybe this question only lingered with me—someone who has lived 23 years under Erdoğan’s rule as part of the opposition—but it stayed in the back of my mind.

Third:
The book expects you to already know Merkel and European history. If you don’t, the reading experience can be painfully confusing. The author writes as if he’s chatting with someone just as informed as he is. When a reader gets lost, it’s very hard to reconnect with the narrative.
