Knit 2 Socks in 1: Discover the Easy Magic of Turning One Long Sock into a Pair! Choose from 21 Original Designs, in All Sizes

Rate this book
Socks continue to be a favorite project of knitters, but “single sock syndrome” — losing interest in knitting that second sock after the first one is done — is the perpetual dilemma. Knit 2 Socks in 1 introduces a distinctive new method that will appeal to sock knitters of all levels as the simplest, most accessible way yet developed to knit two socks at a time.

This innovative technique begins with making the first sock’s cuff. The knitter can then relax and knit a long tube, which makes up the main body of both socks. With the help of a lifeline (scrap yarn that is threaded through stitches to hold them in place), the knitter can easily separate the long tube into two socks. The heels and toes are worked with a simple two-row repeat and are finished with a “hat closure,” a novice knitting technique often used to close the tops of hats. Much like choosing an alternate ending in a classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, the knitter can choose from a wide range of stitch patterns, design features, levels of difficulty, and sizes ranging from child to adult. Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a tried-and-true sock-knitting technique that allows knitters from all backgrounds to join in on the fun.

The author knows that knitters often suffer from "second sock syndrome," and that we often don't feel like making the second sock once the first is completed. Her ingenious solution is to make both at once, basically a tube which is cut and completed with toes and heels. I loved the illustrations and the friendly text, and the fact that a young women of color wrote the book, unlike most knitting guides. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance copy--I'm hoping that the editor gets his/her act together before publication, since the way the charts were laid out was very confusing, and the index included with my advance copy was, weirdly, for a cookbook.

This is a wonderful book for knitters who have troubles knitting two socks for whatever reason (losing interest in knitting that second sock after the first one is done, having the second turn out different from the first, and so on). It's filled with photos, instructions, patterns and all kinds of fabulous socks. The author is warm and knowledgeable and I loved the photos.

I am not a knitter (yet) but I have been wanting to learn. Our family recently bought an old church that we've turned into a community arts center and the downstairs is stocked with comfy chairs, tables, all kinds of art supplies and oodles of donated yarn, fabric, sewing machines, etc. for folks to use for crafting and creating all different kinds of arts. It is designed to be a place where you can come and knit, crochet, sew, write, play music, paint, etc. even if you can't afford materials or you don't know how to do it yet. My oldest kids taught themselves to knit and crochet and it really seems like time for me to learn. That said, this book is way over my head. It is the kind of resource that will be helpful if you already know how to knit, not to teach you. I'd love to come back to it once I'm past the novice stage.

I read a digital temporary ARC of this book for review.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Having been a follower of Talley’s podcast, I was delighted to read this book. One thing we knitters love to make is socks… well, except all the fiddly bits like heels, toes, and cuffs! Talley’s technique here for knitting one long tube is brilliant, and I definitely will be adopting it in the future. I would pitch this book to advanced beginners, as they should already know the basics of knitting in the round, and quite possibly previous sock knitting experience. The idea of cutting into your knitting can be quite scary, even to those of us with experience!

This book excels in its clear and well-thought-out instructions. The images are beautiful, and everything looks so squishy and cosy. My favourite part was that it was all based on a recipe which could easily be adapted for different yarn weights, different feet sizes all the way from children to adult men! Perfect for the gift knitter who likes to cater for the whole family.

Waited to do my review until I could get a hard copy. The preview copy did not have all of the information such as numbers and go to pages so it was hard to write a true review. This is a lovely book with a concept that I have not thought of! I also love that there are several patterns included in the book using Safiyyah's technique. As a knitter I look forward to knitting some socks of my own from this book.

I would recommend this book to my students if they were interested in learning to knit socks. All of the various pictures, along with the explanation of how to knit the socks make instructions very clear. Think this might be Ms. Talley's first book and I have to say it is just as thorough and well thought out as her classes!

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for providing me an ARC in exchange for my unbiased review of this book.

Knit 2 Socks in 1 by Safiyyah Talley (expected publication date November 9, 2021) is a fun new way to approach the dreaded "second sock syndrome" that plagues many knitters. There are many ardent sock knitters out there, but many find themselves bogged down after the initial excitement of knitting up sock #1 when faced with the task of repeating everything they've just done to knit sock #2. Talley's approach to knitting socks gives sock knitters a new way to knit a pair of socks that helps prevent second sock syndrome.

The book is organized with the first half being a general reference guide for making socks. There is an extensive discussion of types of yarns to use that work best for socks, and considerations for needles and working small circumferences in the round. Talley then breaks down the steps for knitting 2 socks in one long tube, placing lifeline scrap yarns at specific points in the tube so that you can go back and finish the final details (a cuff and a toe, and the heels) once the long sock tube that encompasses both the legs and feet are completely finished. This gives you only minimal finishing and lets you work the majority of the socks in one go. The author also provides a handy list of measurements, so you can achieve a perfect fit (for you or a recipient) with measurements for leg and foot length and foot circumference, all based on your gauge/the weight of yarn you've chosen to knit your socks with. This gives you a basic recipe from which you can work socks in all sizes and weights using her 2 Socks in 1 technique.

The second half of the book contains patterns for socks using this technique, ranging from very simple/all stockinette to more complex (although none of them exceptionally difficult) socks with some patterning on them. Again, these socks are all customizable using the measurement standards she provided in the first half of the book, allowing you to work them to your specific gauge and size requirements.

The technique is well-illustrated throughout, step by step, with clear photographs showing the process. The patterns are also nicely photographed in a range of sizes (from toddler through adults) with a fun, upbeat vibe. (Her littlest model is possibly the cutest ever.) You could easily use a pattern already in your library that is top-down and apply the techniques described in this book, making it a great way to tackle some of the patterns you might have had lurking in your queue for a while.

My only reservation about this book is that it won't be for anyone who is a steadfast heel-flap knitter. The technique lends itself only to "afterthought" type heels, so short-row heels (which are used for illustrative purposes in the book) or Fish Lips Kiss Heels will work. Some knitters find these a bit snug and prefer a heel-flap type construction, which isn't easily translated into this particular technique. It also assumes that you like working socks from the top/cuff down. Modifying an existing pattern will work, but knitters should be aware if the pattern they've chosen has a specific directionality to it, as that will change if the original pattern was written for a toe-up orientation.

Overall, I think this is a fun reference book to help sock knitters expand their knowledge arsenal of ways to approach finishing an entire pair of socks and well worth a look if you are a beginner or experienced sock knitter.

Review based on a NetGalley ARC provided by the publishers.

This book is perfect for any knitter, who like me, suffers from Single Sock Syndrome (SSS). I'm always afraid my second sock will not turn out as the first. Hence I either try to work two socks at a time, using magic loop, and give up when I get to the heel and turn the socks into wristwarmers, or I don't cast on at all.

Talley shows a truly simple method in this book, which follows the popular "build-your-own-adventure novel" approach, allowing the knitter to be creative while following her 'afterthought method' [my description] for avoiding SSS.

The introduction to the book includes information on yarn weight, needles, sizing, how to get gauge, which notions might be useful, and so much more. Making this book a good fit for beginners at sock knitting as well as advanced knitters.

If you knit socks, YOU NEED THIS! Even a newbie to socks could find this their go to method.

I have always wanted an old, antique sock knitting machine where you just crank out these huge tubes and make socks quick as a bunny. Well Safiyyah Talley has shown us how to do this, but without the machine. Now we can knit tubes for days & put our socks together all at once. Heck, we could just knit tubes all year and put these together when we feel like it!

Through the first 30% of the book she discusses the remedial knitting stuff like yarn weights, fibers, needles, knitting in the round, swatching, blocking (make your own sock blocker!). She expands by showing how to knit socks with every style of needles, double points, circulars, etc. You become one with the method of “Lifelines”. You learn different methods of soles and bind offs. A nice chunk of required sock anatomy education and then the meat of the book begins.

The book provides 7 unique stitches and 22 patterns using her tube method for basic socks, yoga socks, ankle socks, no show socks, calf socks, lace socks, booties, bed socks and more! Patterns included for yarn weights from Fingering to Super Bulky & for everyone from babies to adults.

Before I thought this book couldn’t get any better, there is more! Included are CHARTS for Sizing your Socks, Shoe Size Conversion and Metric Conversions to Convert to Length and Width.

Note: *All of these socks use an afterthought heel.* Not sure what that is? No worries, she shows you.

Special thanks to Storey Publishing, Safiyyah Talley & NetGalley.

This book presents an innovative technique for knitting two socks at one time, thereby avoiding the need to control multiple yarn balls and the possibility that you might lose the first sock before you are done with the second. I like the premise! It "uncomplicates" the idea of a sock knitting project down to the basics: you are knitting a tube, and all the rest is embellishment.

This simplification makes the instruction in this book suitable for a beginner at knitting, not just a beginner to sock knitting. I enjoyed the introduction to topics such as needle and fiber choice as well as to sock anatomy. The book therefore has a very bottom-up - dare I say, "toe-up?" ;) - feel, allowing the reader/knitter to build their own sock features and giving them the confidence to customize freely. Charts and tables are provided to assist in creating socks that fit newborns through large men in size, and 7 variations on an initial base pattern are provided. I believe this base technique would also be useful for more experienced knitters to use alongside their favorite toe and heel variation.

Highly recommended if sock knitting seems too fussy, and would be a worthwhile addition to any knitting library due to its introduction to an interesting new technique.

My thanks to NetGalley, Storey Publishing, and the author for providing an e-arc for review.

Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a fun technique guide with tutorials and patterns for hand-knit socks 2 in one written by Safiyyah Talley. Due out 1st March 2022 from Storey, it's 152 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.

I have been knitting for decades. In fact, my paternal grandmother taught me to knit back when circular needles were still relatively rare. When I learned to knit socks (and other small circumference knits in the round), my go-to technique involved double pointed "sock" needles. Not too many years ago, a colleague taught me magic loop and I started knitting 2 socks (or sleeves) at a time - because, as the author wisely points out, lots of people lose the impulse between knitting the first sock and finishing the second one. She jokes, but I actually have misplaced a sock and couldn't find it when I was finishing the second sock in the pair. I'm also really bad about buying yarn for a project and then misplacing the pattern before I get started.

This is a completely new-to-me and innovative technique which really could be a game changer for some knitters. The basic premise involves knitting one long tube, starting with the ribbing on sock one, using waste yarn to mark out the live stitches for an afterthought heel, continuing on for the foot, waste yarn carrier where the toe decreases are going to start on sock one.. continuing in the same order down the leg of sock two, marking waste yarn carrier for the heel on sock two, through the foot, and finishing the toe decreases of sock 2.

The basic techniques are easy to understand and the tutorials are accompanied by crisp, clear, color photos without any hands or other objects in the way of the camera. The author shows the technique on a wide variety of yarn types and in a bunch of different sizes, from baby socks to adult sized super thick slipper socks.

The introduction contains a good basic primer on yarn weight, tools, and supplies, but contains no tutorial for learning basic knitting, so absolute beginners will need to find a tutorial or knitting mentor to help out (I recommend knitting buddies, they're awesome). Throughout the text, she's included useful tables and charts to help readers DIY their own patterns and customize different details. In fact, she describes the process like one of those choose-your-own adventure books which I absolutely devoured at a frightening rate when I was a kid. It's a good analogy.

I enjoyed the chatty conversational writing and the encouraging "vibe" of the whole book. I don't want to overemphasize, but I also appreciated the fact that the author is a woman of color and representation is so important. She's a talented teacher, innovator, and designer as well, and that's probably more salient, but it's nice to see someone who doesn't necessarily look like me (middle aged white gal) bringing her perspective to the table. I'd love to take a class or workshop someday from Ms. Talley.

Four and a half stars. Most of the terms are in American English. There's a retailer list at the back of the book with links to suppliers, most in North America along with a short general knitting abbreviations chart.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Knit 2 Socks in 1. What??? Yes please! And could we make it user friendly? Do you know what I mean? Have you tried to find a knitting book that could speak your language? Like super beginner? I’ve been knitting awhile but only simple stuff. So when I found this book I got really excited!
First of all she explains everything one on one. It didn’t feel like a super hard homework assignment I barely understood. The author did a great job explaining……
*yarn fibers.
*dpn and circular needles.
*stitch gauge and blocking.
*lifeline stitches and uses.
I guess people use to take classes back in the day in knitting, at school? So this felt like a class friendly education. I love that I can just knit the entire socks at once! What a great idea. This book is for the person who wants to knit socks in the simplest terms. Nothing super difficult but you can’t tell from all the beautiful patterns she put in this. 7 patterns to make it any size.
I highly recommend it if you want to learn a new method.
Thanks Storey Publishing via Netgalley.

I was immediately drawn to this book as I love lace socks but often suffer from second sock syndrome, sometimes taking months before the second sock is completed. The author of this book has found a way to combat this by basically knitting a long tube, and placing the heels and cuffs, so you have a pair of socks completed.

The book has great photographs and is perfect for someone starting on their sock journey as it explains in great detail all about the yarn you can use, types of knitting needles and how to estimate the yarn choice for each size.

There is a great variety of patterns which I will come back to time after time, and new heels that I’ve not knit before.

This would make a fabulous present for a new sock knitter or even someone with experience who suffers with second sock syndrome. A fun way to knit socks.

Thank you to the publisher and net galley for giving me an advanced copy, I can’t wait to cast on.

Aimed at relatively new knitters, this book tackles the issue of "Second Sock Syndrome" by teaching how to knit two socks at once. There are many methods of how to do this, and as the title proclaims, this is indeed the easiest way ever... which means that most experienced knitters will probably already have thought of this method themselves.

That said, as a book aimed at beginners, it works really well. It has all the necessary details you could wish for, and goes into great detail of explaining the anatomy of a sock, how to choose the right needle and yarn, as well as providing lots of photos for all the techniques needed in order to knit a 2-in-1 sock.

I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you for the opportunity to preview the book!

For anyone who dreams of knitting socks but is intimidated by short rows and heel turns, this is going to be the book for you. I instantly fell in love with the methodology of knitting two socks out of one long one. I've always worried that the socks will be uncomfortable and that they wouldn't fit me right.

I'm I've tried knitting socks before and just could not make it work. This time, I know I'll be able to master it, and not only will I become an expert sock knitter but I'll finally be able to gift socks for Christmas instead of hats!

As an avid sock knitter I was really interested in this book. To say I am obsessed with knitting socks is a bit of an understatement, and I had heard of the technique of knitting two socks at once, but never knew how to do it.

This book provides a wealth of information, it clearly covers which needles to use, yarn suggestions, stitch markers etc. It has loads of clear photos, as well as detailed step by step guides on how to achieve the desired effect.

There are also several projects to have a go at. and indeed, have a go I will!

I wouldn't say this is a book for a beginner, I think you would need some knitting knowledge to tackle these patterns, but it certainly explains everything very simply, so I think a knitter who has never knitted socks before could certainly tackle the technique.

I thought it was an excellent book.

How does a person knit two socks at the same time?

Posted on June 4, 2021 by michellelovatosbookreviews, world's first book color commentator, book reviews with a twist

I am going to try this sock knitting method for sure!
Did I ever mention I taught knitting at a major fabric retailer before COVID 19? Our company is not going back to classes yet, but my desire to knit never stopped.
Knit 2 socks in 1: Discover the Easy Magic of Turning One Long Sock into a Pair by Safiyyah Talley makes me want to wield my needles – in a good way. And this method is smart. Basically, the way this method works, you knit a long tube that starts with a sock cuff. At the proper locations, you knit off your required stitches and throw them on a stitch holder for later use. Knit on and on and on until you are at the other end of your socks. Make another cuff, and separate. Whammo.
I’m sure there are a few more intricacies to it, but that’s the idea. And I like it.
This method actually makes sense. Talley reminds readers that knitting socks are a one-at-a-time craft, but losing the first sock during the time it takes to make the second one can be pretty darn frustrating. You might as well not do it at all if you can’t keep track of them. But when they are both on the same tube, there’s no losing them.
You sock knitters understand.
For non-knitters who have read this far, when a person hand knits a sock, they either start at the cuff top or the toe. Either way, constructing the toe and the heel takes a bit of effort, adding or subtracting stitches to create the desired shape. So sculpting the same pair simultaneously makes sense.
I wonder if you could pull this off on one of those hand-crank knitting machines.
I know this idea two-in-one idea is new. I have a few books set up with similar methods in my closet. But Knit 2 Socks in 1, is special because it’s a physically beautiful book put together understandably.
Containing all the necessary explanations about tools and fibers, Talley shares her love for this craft with an expert hand and admirable manner. Talley included lots of little charts for sizes, needles, and yarns.
Adult socks, kids socks, cable socks, stockinette socks, you name it. Knitters need this. Don’t knitters need ALL knitting books? But, you do need this one for your library. You will thank yourself later.
There is only one problem with Knit 2 Socks in 1: Discover the Easy Magic of Turning One Long Sock into a Pair. It publishes next February.
So keep your eyes open and save a few bucks for this one.

Any experienced knitter will tell you that despite them being so small and looking simple, socks are an absolute nightmare to knit, and actually very tricky.

I loved the concept of knitting two socks in one, because usually by the time I finish one sock, I don't have the patience for another one, or it takes me three times as long. I really liked that this was, a "choose your own adventure book for knitters," as Safiyyah states in her intro.

The book contains all the necessary info on choosing a yarn (and goes into depth on the different fibres and weights). There's also a lot of information on the needle types and choosing the right kind of needle for your project. The first chapter truly is the foundation of the book, one that the knitter can come back to again and again, and not just for socks.

The patterns are well laid out and each one comes with great conversational notes from Talley.

I love the attention to detail in the information sections and all the pictures and diagrams throughout. I find some knitting books to be lacking in pictures, but this book most definitely was not lacking in those areas, making it a great choice for beginners, and experts alike.

I loved the chapter on customizing your socks, in which the author gives options for varying cuff lengths and different sole options.

This really is a choose your own adventure kind of book, since there's so many patterns and options available. Some of my favourite patterns are the Savasana Yoga Socks, Huntsman's Cottage Socks, the Littlest Prince(ss) Booties.

There's something for everyone in this book and I was delighted with it. Excited to get started with my first pair of 2 in 1 socks!

Safiyyah Talley knocked it out of the park!

I like knitting socks, but second sock syndrome is real. I either get tired of the pattern after casting off the first sock, or forget important things like stitch count or needle size for the second one. No more! Yes, there is the 2AAT technique with two socks next to each other on one very long needle, but this is a lot easier. There's only "one" sock to knit -- just place some judicious lifelines, snip them apart, and add the finishing touches. Easy! The author includes plenty of clear images and instructions so detailed, a first-time sock knitter would have no trouble following along.

This 2 socks in 1 technique is great for road trips, knitting on 9" needles, and forgetful people. I especially like that I can knit the legs and feet of my socks, then stick the heels and toes on whenever I feel like it without leaving my needles tied up. It's almost a "set it and forget it" pattern. Just get started, remember where the lifelines go, and turn off your brain. If you're a meditative knitter, this is the sock technique for you.

If anything, I would've liked even more designs or heel types to play with, but a skilled knitter would use this book as a jumping-off point anyway. Most standard cuff-down sock patterns would translate easily to this method, so the possibilities are endless. Highly recommended for all sock knitters of any skill level.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I am an avid knitter and socks are a favorite project. Other techniques I have tried to do 2 socks at a time have been fiddly and seem to take even longer to complete. This book is intriguing and has something unique to add to sock knitting! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC to review. Looking forward to the publication March 1 2022.
Overall the directions seem clear and well written. The charts are simple to follow as well. I particularly like the photos and instructions for lifelines which I never really understood before. What brings the whole process together for me is the reusable Sock Knitter’s Worksheet!
At first glance the customizations seem overwhelming. The specific patterns included definitely help with this. My favorite adaptations are for anklets, baby socks and yoga/dance socks. These type patterns are more difficult to find .
My only concerns have to do with fit. Not sure of comfort of this toe as it looks pointy. The foot measurement extends over such a variety of sizes that it might not suit knitters who like very specific fit .
I often hesitate to buy knitting pattern books ( as opposed to individual patterns) but in this book I like every variation. I plan to make a wardrobe of baby socks for my granddaughter on the way!
The highlight of this book for me is the photography , notably the wonderful “family “ pics! Congratulations Safiyyah on a wonderful book.

This was a well-written, easy to follow book with a lot of good information. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned knitter, you will find something of use in this book. There is a section on different kinds of fibers, how each one feels, and how they affect the results of the knit. She goes into the pluses and minuses of animal vs. plant vs. synthetic materials, the weights of the yarns, how much you need, needle sizes, and more. She strongly suggests you do a swatch with what you plan to use so you can block it and adjust as necessary for what you want. The pictures help a lot too.

In this book, she offers the solution to “second sock syndrome” when knitters don’t want to make a second after finishing the first. The solution is to make one long tube sock which is then cut and completed with toes and heels.

The only minus I really saw in the book was the editing—and since this was an ARC, I know there will be some issues, but the index included with my advance copy was, weirdly, for a cookbook and had nothing to do with a knitting book. Plus some of the charts were very confusing.

Recommendation: Overall, I think this will be a really good book once it is finally proofed and published. Definitely recommended then.

Disclaimer: Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are not influenced by anyone.

You’ve picked the perfect sock yarn. You have the needles, the pattern and you are ready to go. You start with the cuff, continue with the body, turn the heel and taper to the toe. Finished. A success. But then…you have to do it again. Exactly the same way. That’s why so many knitters have a collection of odd socks waiting for the moment of inspiration to finish the partners.

Safiyyah Talley has a genius idea in Knit 2 Socks in 1. The method she uses is simple. Begin with a cuff then knit a long tube separated at intervals by “lifelines” of removable waste yarn (different color yarn from another project). The tube ends with a toe. Finish both socks by removing the waste yarn and adding the missing section: heel, cuff, etc. This may sound complicated but it is not. The illustration and step by step directions are very clear. Talley follows with original patterns for socks organized by the patterns used (ribbed, frilled, lace) and sized for babies children and adults.

Knit 2 Socks in 1 is an excellent guide for knitters at every level. Talley discusses yarn weight, needle size, blocking techniques, swatching and accessories. There are sizing charts and a worksheet for notes. Knit 2 Socks in 1 belongs in every knitter’s library. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Storey Publishing and Safiyyah Talley for this ARC.

A very good, very helpful knitting book. Detailed and has lots of helpful tips that are worth knowing about, the author is very obviously skilled in knitting, giving lots of information on different types of needsles, different weights and types of wool, I really liked that and as someone who has knitted on and off, on needles, with arms and tried a selection of different needles, I REALLY LOVED how there was an explanation and a demonstration of these, I would have loved that if I was just taking knitting up, however, there was NO books like this one in that aspect.

I have knitted socks before, just not on needles, there are lots of tables in this book which I'm sure the average person will find helpful, it didn't aid anything for me, I did like the colours of the wool in a lot of sock demonstrations, I felt that made the knitter feel that the sky is the limit and DEFINITELY made my knitting fingers itch for certain.

I feel that this book is inclusive between advanced knitters and also beginners but it brings all knitters together as one where in other books it can feel that you are picking through for revlance, but not with Safiyyah, she knows her audience and talks to all of it. I admire that!

Many thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and Talley for my free ARC in exchange for my review here.

I'm an experienced knitter, and an experienced sock knitter, and I am fascinated by Safiyyah Talley's technique for knitting two socks at a time.

This book does an excellent job of layout out the basics - yarn, needles, techniques for knitting in the round. And the author's voice is conversational and fun.

The technique itself is quite unusual! I found myself telling several of my knitting friends about it and none of us had considered it before. But it's well explained and I think an adventurous beginner would have no trouble following the instructions. If starting the second sock is your sticking point, but you have no problem with finishing work, you'll enjoy it. I also like that she offers many variations of patterns to entice folks to give it a try.

I would have liked if the author had included more information about closing heels and toes with kitchener stitch as the technique described in the book won't be a good fit for all feet, especially those of us whose toes are more rectangular than rounded or pointy.

I may give this technique a try, but I will be modifying pieces of it to fit my personal knitting preferences. Which is what knitters do! A fun new option for the toolbox.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really liked the way the author explained things at the beginning. I have been knitting for 5 years so I consider myself more experienced. However, it was nice to get a refresher. I have never knit socks the way that author described. so I was really excited to read this book and try out this sock knitting method. Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a knitting book that explains a method of knitting 2 socks at once.
The patterns were incredibly informative, and I really liked the pictures. I felt as if they were useful in displaying what you needed to do. There were some things that I had a little harder time understanding, but I think that once I start knitting the socks it will make more sense. I am excited to try out these patterns especially because I have gotten second sock syndrome before.
Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a great resource to have. I would recommend it to those who have some experience knitting and want to try something new!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.

For a new sock knitter, a sock is just a tube. If he or she can grasp the essentials of knitting in the round, there is not much else to these quick and satisfying projects except for two sections, the heel and the toe. There are hundreds of videos and tutorials that show the many techniques for the shaping sections of socks, but Safiyyah Talley’s new book suggests that the tricky parts can just be ignored until the end. Her patterns have you knit a long tube with all of the leg and foot knitting done without pause. Then at the end, toe shaping and two heels can be done using afterthought methods.

I’m not a new sock knitter, and I actually enjoy the mid-sock pause of creating a heel turn. Toes are a delight because they go so quickly, and suddenly you have a wearable object. But there was still much to enjoy in the book, notably the careful charts of sizing, gauges and stitch counts that will allow any aspiring sock designer to use a range of yarns to knit for a large range of foot sizes.

I heartily recommend this book to any knitter who is intimidated by socks!

As someone who has knitted for years, It had been a long time since I knit a pair of socks. Mainly due to the dreaded Second Sock Syndrome. So I was very interested in Talley's book Knit 2 Socks in 1.

Whilst the aim of the book is simple, to knit a pair of socks at once.
Talley makes it even simpler by creating a knit your own adventure pattern to create your ideal sock. Based on the idea of a choose your own adventure book from our childhood. Your journey through this book aims to help to knit a pair of socks for your needs. So you can use any thickness of yarn, make any sized sock (from baby to adult male) and different length.

One section explains the different types of yarn and needles used to knit socks, listing the advantages for each. This section is very useful for people beginning their sock knitting journey. Despite having this section, I felt the book isn't suited for a newbie sock knitter. It is great for someone who has previously made a pair of socks and understands the anatomy of creating a basic sock.

Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a very well-written instructional book. Talley's premise is that many of us lose interest in knitting socks once we finish one, so she suggests we knit 2 at a time. Talley includes an excellent introduction and detailed explanation of how to select yarns, needles and the appropriate size for your socks. There are many pattern variations included as well so there is something for everyone. The directions for the actual knitting are very clear and she explains each step precisely to they are easy to follow. I am a VERY slow knitter and I didn't want to delay the review while I knit up some booties, but I am confident I can complete both socks at one time following Talley's directions. I am really excited to try the yoga socks too. If you're an experienced knitter of socks, try this technique and check out the many fun variations. If you're a beginner, give it a try - you will be glad you did when your feet are warm and toasty in your handknitted socks!!! Thanks so much to Net Galley for the chance to review an ARC.

Man, I really wanted to wait to review this book until I'd had a chance to sit with it and actually test out a pattern. I thought I'd have done that by now because knitting socks is something I've wanted to try for a long while now. Unfortunately life keeps getting in the way. So for now I'll just say that this is a lovely book - I love the photos that make knitting look like a fun and cozy thing to do. And I love the projects included. But best of all, reading through the instructions makes me feel like this is something I can actually do - I crochet and knit, but I'm much better at crochet. I've been trying to do more knitting recently so that I can get better at it, but socks have always intimidated me. Having this book on hand makes me feel like I can tackle it successfully. And having watched one or two of Safiyyah Talley's YouTube videos makes me feel like I can find some help there as well - as well as some entertainment!
