Rate this book
War. Corruption. A dying empire…
And the only means of escape wiped out in genocide…

For millennia, Ageronians have prospered beyond imagination, aided by the Nehisi, an ancient tribe with the ability to bridge worlds. But now the tides have turned.

The Realm is dying.

In the face of imminent destruction, Supreme Commander Draeger must find a way to save his people.

As the prophecy of doom plays out, a chance encounter with a thief sparks the beginnings of a cat and mouse game, between commander and crook, in a world of political and moral dilemmas, corruption, and murder…

…and the revelation that the fate of billions could depend on the actions of a single amoral thief.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The world building was fantastic. The characters were well developed and I definitely have developed favorites. The story itself is engaging and I enjoyed being surprised by a few of the twists. I definitely finished this book ready for more!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories with an immersive world and history, a strong female main character, love, war and deceit all wrapped up in a mystical sci-fi adventure.
I cannot wait to read the next book!

In a far-off future, a solar system is dying The Ageronian empire scrambles to find a new home. Their former allies, the Nehisi, might have been able to assist them with their ability to travel between worlds. The major hurdle: there's only one Nehisi left, and their location and identity are unknown.

There were some elements that I thought were particularly well handled. I really liked the overall premise of the story, as well as the framework for the different cultures in this universe. I also thought the characters were generally well-developed, with most of the featured characters having some nuance. I also generally liked the world-building.

For my own preferences, I wanted to see more of the differences between the featured cultures on display, although I recognise that this is a tall order from a first-in-series. The other element that I wished were stronger was in the reveals. I'm not sure whether there were supposed to be twists or not. If so, I found them to be anticlimactic.

Overall, I did enjoy the novel and am looking forward to reading the next installment.

I received a copy of this novel via Voracious Readers Only.

The epilogue set up the background from the prequel (Emergence) and the first chapter set up the rest of the book.

What an accomplishment while still a child:
‘…she even knew the legionnaire’s entire code of conduct and rules by heart. Trouble was, she’d also broken most of them, too.’
‘I have to protect you, even if it’s from yourself.’

Vittoria would do well to remember her mother’s teachings. It’s one thing to save oneself, yet another to save an entire system. No pressure! But mama raised her right…
And the reason that the Ageronian system is dying? Biotechnology! Well, actually mankind’s inability and/or refusal to think through the ramifications of biotech. Will current-day man learn from our future fiction? Perhaps the answer lies in ‘The Search for Sansari’.

I quite enjoyed this book, although it took me a while to get into it. I had a hard time keeping the politics straight. The story follows one character, she disappears, and then follows another. Till eventually the two stories merge. That contributed, I think, to both my confusion and slowness to get into it. It’s Game of Thrones-esque in terms of politics, not the sex! There were twists and turns, unlikely alliances ... I am looking forward to book two. Some mild swearing. I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.

I received a free copy during an Amazon free day. I liked the concept and I wanted to like the book. It was a little hard going at first - the writing was a little awkward - but it picked up and it came to a reasonable resolution.

Like any SF you have to suspend some disbelief but I found it hard to believe that only the magical Nehisi can manipulate the ether… and that anyone was stupid enough to kill them all, knowing this. Evil isn’t always stupid.

Dune, Star Wars and Climate Change and a little Wheel of Time thrown in.

It's often been said 95% of sci-fi and fantasy is derivative and certainly this book holds to that thesis. Not a bad yarn, but not a great one either. Not a lot of empathy for the main characters here and so you are kind of left with that Peggy Lee feeling. "Is that all there is?" No, there is a sequel.

Convoluted. Action

Personally found it difficult to follow this novel. It’s
too strange an environment for an earth based tale which it is NOT! The action is swift and erotic at times. The strange critter at the end is terrifying and extremely difficult to kill but the heroine manage o do t.m The ending does lead on.

I didn't know if I would like this book at first, yet it continued to get better. So many things that were unexpected and different from regular sci-fi. Check it out!

Fresh take on Science Fiction

First book I've read by this author. I really enjoyed reading this book.
What a pleasant surprise this story ended up being. It was such a fantastic experience to be able to read
Something new and exciting in this genre. You get tired of reading the same thing over and over again. Only difference between most books now a days is the name of characters, planet and the advancement of a society. I can't wait to get started on the next book. I strongly recommend this book to Fantasy and Science fiction readers.
