In a far-off future, a solar system is dying The Ageronian empire scrambles to find a new home. Their former allies, the Nehisi, might have been able to assist them with their ability to travel between worlds. The major hurdle: there's only one Nehisi left, and their location and identity are unknown.
There were some elements that I thought were particularly well handled. I really liked the overall premise of the story, as well as the framework for the different cultures in this universe. I also thought the characters were generally well-developed, with most of the featured characters having some nuance. I also generally liked the world-building.
For my own preferences, I wanted to see more of the differences between the featured cultures on display, although I recognise that this is a tall order from a first-in-series. The other element that I wished were stronger was in the reveals. I'm not sure whether there were supposed to be twists or not. If so, I found them to be anticlimactic.
Overall, I did enjoy the novel and am looking forward to reading the next installment.
