Cheese in the Trap #1.0

Bẫy Tình Yêu - Tập 1

Rate this book

This is the first manhwa I’ve ever read and I loved it. I’m usually not a fan of contemporary novels. I find them boring. But seeing a contemporary story in an illustrative format kept my interest.

The story follows Seol, a girl who just wants to go to college, study hard and get a job. She has two best friends, a possibly manipulative admirer, and a host of characters around her that accidently make her life difficult. There are many awkward moments where I suffered through second hand embarrassment, and most of the time I felt the pressure Seol put on herself to study because she has a father who doesn’t want to spend money on educating his daughter over his son.

I loved how realistic the story was. And the artwork was whimsical enough to portray the light-heartedness of the manhwa, while showing the underline serious issues regarding gaslighting, stalking and sexism.

It’s a simple premise with well-rounded characters, subtle drama and a fascinating story.

I’m looking forward to book two.

This series leaves me with a lot of mixed feelings, particularly because of the male lead, who while interesting, is also rather atypical of your run of the mill romantic interest - primarily due to his sociopathic traits.

His mannerisms and thought processes are left in a grey area where we can't tell what the hell is going on with him, the purpose of which being to maintain an aura of mystery (and yet we're supposed to swoon? I don't think so).

I don't get this love of Jung in the fandom. I can't tell if he really loves Sul or thinks of her as a possession. And I don't see any real chemistry between the two. There is definite tension but it seems almost predator/prey-esque. Sul also doesn't initiate much in the way of romantic gestures (since she can't really trust Jung, which I do give her props for), despite his manipulation/pseudo-seduction tacticd.

IDK, In Ho and Sul are a breath of fresh air as the series progresses as their relationship is of the bickering friends trope and you see them helping each other out and actually carrying about crap that happens on a personal level (especially on In Ho's side) and it seems way healthier.

Jung may need Sul to grow as a person and Sul could definitely use Jung's support (as a strong successful male with financial clout) but Jung also gives me the heebie jeebies like whoa. The funny thing is, Jung is most interesting at his most dysfunctional and honest moments but at the same time, it's
more like I see him as a Dexter or Light anti-hero/villain character and I want him to step. the hell. away. from Sul.

I worry that with the series ending in season 4, with such limited development in regards to Jung, we'll get this last minute twist in the climax and then Sul makes a compromise and decides to stay with Jung anyway. And In Ho gets relegated to permanent friend status. Which is a loss of so much darn potential. The author has definitely sacrificed Jung's character development to maintain an aura of mystery but leaving Sul and the readers in the dark means a deep and authentic relationship can't be built on all these half truths.

Comparatively, no matter In Ho's issues, his character and his intentions seem to ring far more true. Gah, this series is entertaining but infuriating. If I didn't like Sul and her character development, I'd probably have dropped this already. But now I'm attached and want to see what happens to her. Arrrgh, I don't see this ending well (except for Jung/Sul shippers).

Here's hoping there's fanfic out there that works out any rage from the future ending...

Though the back and forth were tiring, the general story was really good. It was funny and interesting and the disigns were really good. As this is my second webtoon that I've ever read, I can't say that I can judge it properly other than just to say that I really enjoyed it and it wasn't boring nor confusing (maybe that's because I've watched the tv drama first...) Highly recommended!!

If you enjoy reading fiction based on tertiary education, Cheese In The Trap is a great option. This manhwa escapes the usual cliches and brings us a very relatable female protagonist who just wants to go on with the process of college — study, struggle with finances while working part-time jobs and finding a balance, making time to hang out with friends, trying to lead an independent life, and being on guard and wary when a senior who had pretty much ignored her if not been cold starts showing interest in you. Apart from the protagonist, we have the male lead who is unusual from what is portrayed very often, that alone sets this manhwa far apart from the rest — there’s an air of mystery around him, and like Hong Seol, you constantly suspect his intentions. The rest of the characters introduced are individuals in their own authority and appear as complex and layered as a real person can be. The author has done a great job is balancing the illustrations with an intriguing plot and even interesting characters. The pace of the manhwa is a little slow, I probably would have read it much faster had it not been for me watching the adaptation already, but it’s okay, it’s fun to live in Seol’s world!

Read this if you like slice of life content.

Do you like a good Josei and Slice of Life manga? Then this is for you. Heck if you like good mature manga this is for you. It starts out slow, but oh boy does it grow on you!

Id say this is for "females", but I would definitely think guys would like it too, because it isn't frilly at all.

It's main focus, in my opinion, is social interaction; how we see others, how they see us, how we act towards one another and our feelings amid all this social play.

MangaUpdates' rating is 9.1 (which is high - duh).

I'm still confused by Jung's personality but I really like the main character and all her friends because they're all super complex.
I already invested so much time into this webcomic so I will definitely continue (^o^)

Beberapa flashback masa kecil Jung bikin merinding .__.

Pokoknya baca aja deh, nggak bakal rugi.

Fan translation sih .__.

Dramanya nggak recommended, kecuali kamu penggemar Seolhyun x)), terus yang doyan horor-thriller ada The Tales of the Unusual, Friday: Forbidden Tales, Bastard, dan masih banyak lagi.

This is one of the best webtoons I've ever read. The way the author structures and frames the story is unique and makes even the most mundane things mysterious.

I still don't fully trust Jung, but that's one of the things that pushes me to binge read this comic.

Dare I say it — I think the kdrama did a better job with character personalization and with just giving side characters enough screentime for me to care but not too much to make it overwhelming.

Overall, I'm still interested in the plot and there are some Yoo Jung moments that are so psychologically interesting to parse, but overall I'm just kind of confused.

Trigger Warning: Stalking

I've been meaning to read this webtoon for years and I'm really happy that I've finally gotten around to reading it! I was a fan of the kdrama adaption, but I knew that a lot of fans disliked the way the showrunners changed the characters and the story. I've been rewatching some of my favourite kdramas lately and I ended up partially rewatching the Cheese In The Trap. Rewatching the kdrama made me intrigued about the original source material again so I decided to read it on a whim and I ended up finishing the first season of this webtoon in less than 12 hours!

Looking at the webtoon alone, without thinking about the kdrama, I can see why it is so loved. Hong Seol is very relatable in her journey of studying at university. She is just trying to keep her head down but she keeps on getting accidentally involved in other people's problems and drama. She also overthinks and misunderstands people's intentions, which I love as an over-thinker myself. University life is very accurately depicted. I remembered going through the struggles that Hong Seol does. Then you have Hong Seol's complicated relationship with Yoo Jung. It's sort of like enemies to friends to potentially lovers. I'm really looking forward in continuing on with the webtoon and seeing their relationship develop further.

Comparing the webtoon to the kdrama, I can see why people dislike the kdrama with the characterisation of Yoo Jung. In the webtoon, he's sort of is on the line between being cunning and manipulative to being misunderstood in his intentions. Sometimes Yoo Jung intentionally does something and other times, due to his popularity, his words or actions have unintended consequences. The kdrama took the route of Yoo Jung being more cunning and manipulative to the point where you struggle to see why Hong Seol would like Yoo Jung. There's also a lot of focus on a side character that is not that prominent in the webtoon. It could change in the later seasons in the webtoon but I don't think it will because of the fans outcry. So far I am enjoying the webtoon more than the kdrama, and I think that will continue to be the case. I just hope that the ending is better than the kdrama.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first season of this webtoon and I can't wait to continue onwards!

Seol şapşalına söylenecek hiçbir şey yok. Canını yediğim! #justsaying

Hazır aklıma gelmişken belediye başkanım, gavur holivud'a da iki çift lafım var: Başarısız kadro seçimleriyle batırdığınız nice kitabın hırsı ile konuşuyorum şuan, Kore'yi örnek alın! Ciddiyim.

Lütfen deyince aklıma, If I Stay kitabının en vurucu sahnelerinden "Lütfen Mia. Bana şarkı yazdırma." repliğini kaldırıp, yerine hastanede kıza serenat yaptıran Holivud geldi. Aptal film şirketleri, aptal senaristler. Bak yine kızdım.

[I guess this is not technically a review of the book, but just a memo]
I first read this on Line Manga because the first few episodes were free.
It was really confusing (every character looked the same, though the time line didn't confuse me), but everyone in the comment section were saying things like "I know it's all ??? at the beginning, but I swear, it gets amazing! Keep reading on!".
I'm glad I didn't stop reading.
And since I'm the kind of person who likes to keep these books as a paper, I've bought the Japanese translated version of this comic right away. (It just came out last month, and it costs 1200yen for the first 20 episodes. There're only two books published so far, and there are no goodreads entry either. grrrr.)

Now that I'm hooked, I can't stop reading, and because the line manga is 1.translation is so slow 2.has to wait for 23hrs to read the next episode, I've downloaded the webtoons app just because of this comic.
Ah, goodbye my sleeping hours, and hello, intriguing story!
(thank god I've discovered this comic book, I'm going to read it at the Irkutsk airport on my way home. 13 hours layover y'all.)

...I wonder who's the cheese and who's the one going to be trapped.....

I might try to learn Korean just to read this comic.
Hmmm. Should I go to Seoul to get the Korean version of this comic?
It's just a few hours plane ride from Tokyo...

i genuinely think this webtoon takes the cake for some of the most fascinating characters ever. seol feels so real as a college student, the way she over-analyzes and works herself to the bone is something every reader can, unfortunately, relate to. but more than seol, jung yu wears the crown for being the most psycho/interesting character.
it's so funny because the story takes a very normal trope but turns it into something so different. jung is the same character i've seen in countless other stories, rich + good looking + smart + popular... and at the same time, he's not. i feel wary yet also rooting for him?? it's such an interesting dilemma every time i read his interactions with seol.
anyway i binged this no raegrets i'm extremely sucked into the story

I loved it! Seriously, it's amazing, and reminds me a little of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, though I'm not sure why.

The characters are likeable, complex and three-dimensional, and the way the story is narrated is sorta awesome. :D

I love this manhwa so much. I love going back and forth to the present and past so we can see exactly why Seol is feeling apprehensive about Jung's sudden kidness towards her. I have read this mahwa 3x now and I stillllll love it. I don't think I would ever get sick of reading this.

Anyway, aku kesel sama ending season 1. Tapi gini, manusia memang kudu punya kemampuan team work yang bagus. Kalau kita udah usaha tapi cuma sepihak gimana? Masa ketika anggota kelompok kita brengsek, kita yang salah? Kita yang dianggap nggak bisa negosiasi? Gendheng a?!
