From USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Claudia Burgoa comes this page-turner fake-relationship-office romance.

What happens when the guy who’s afraid of love finds himself in it?

Know what they say about never mixing business with pleasure? Yeah, no.
The one about never sleeping with your boss?
I ignored it too.
I blame Aslan Spearman, the boss.
He’s a wealthy playboy who doesn’t believe in happily ever after.
He’s demanding, a workaholic, and a cynical.
He’d rather have a root canal than be in a romantic relationship.
Do you want to know a secret? I think he’s afraid of love.
So when he has to go to the Spearman family reunion in Hawaii with his girlfriend, he’s in big trouble.
That’s what happens when you lie to your family about your relationship status.
It wasn’t important—until now.
What does he do?
He comes to me, his VP of Operations and right hand for assistance.
After all, I’m a problem solver.
Except my personal life is complete chaos.
So we make a deal. I’ll be his girlfriend if he helps me solve my problems.
It’s a win-win situation, right?
I mean, how hard can it be?
It’s not like I plan to fall in love.

We are heading back to the Spearman Family, just a different branch of it, and I absolutely love it! This can be read seprately if you haven't read that series before but if you have you'll love seeing some familiar faces and how their lives have progressed since we've seen them last.

Aslan Spearman is lying to his mother and has been for the last year, only now it's catching up to him since the family reunion is coming up in a few weeks and there's no reason he shouldn't bring his girlfriend that he's been dating for a year to it...only he really hasn't been dating anyone he just told his mom that so she would stop bothering him about his personal life and the fact that he works to much.

Keaton works for Aslan and is his VP of Operations, his right hand, his problem solver. So who better than her to help him out of this situation, and the fact that he's attracted to her can only help sell the fake relationship, right? I loved Keaton, she is a strong woman that had to deal with a lot, and now she finds herself behind the eight ball and that's not a good place to be. So even though she's very hesitant about this crazy proposal Aslan is offering...maybe just maybe it can help her out of the spot she has currently found herself in.

I love the chemistry between Keaton and Aslan. They have a solid working relationship but they also have a friendship of sorts as well, how many people can say that they are friends with their boss and don't mind working 10+ hours a day with them...not many so that should tell you something shouldn't it.

I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys Steamy Contemporary Romances, Large Family Romances, Office Romances, or the Fake Relationship Trope.

Happy Reading!!!

Claudia has once again pulled me into her characters world and gave me all the feels.
Aslan Spearman is busy running a company, he is surrounded by a very large overbearing family, and he knows they mean well he needs some room to breathe. So, when he is summoned to a family reunion and needs to produce the girlfriend, he made up it is now time to think quick on his feet.
Keaton Nealy is VP of Operations at Spearman. She works hard is dedicated and it seems her home life is a bit of a mess. Raising her teenage sister, keeping the home running and making sure they always have roof over the head has become more difficult with all the bills she acquired since her mother's illness. When her boss suggests a plan that can help them both she is so not on board, but Aslan Spearman can be very persuasive. This couple is strong, sweet, sexy and have intelligent witty banter that I just loved! Get ready for an adventure we are headed to Hawaii for the Spearman reunion.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Note: This series is interconnected. So please read in order.

Triggers: Heart attacks, drug abuse, abandonment, depression, cheating, death by cancer, dementia.

Well well this book was tons of fun, at times heavy as well, but mostly fun.

We are introduced to the main couple of the hour: Aslan (yes like king of narnia - the author said the family loves having children named after characters) and Keaton.

Aslan is part of a big family - which right now is obsessed with marriage - he is not. So he invents a fake girlfriend to avoid being questioned about his life.

But when his mother involves him in a family reunion, he has to think fast about who should come with him to this latest shenanigan, and he chooses Keaton.

Meanwhile Keaton is having her own problems - a tough life, a mother who's sick, a sister who makes questionable decisions and boyfriends (who the hell thinks education is useless - I'd have kicked his ass). So it's not all sunshine and roses for her.

Her getting money to attend this family reunion with Aslan will solve all her problems. But will it solve her growing feelings? Hmm..only time tells in this book.

.......

I loved this boook! I was in utter love. It was good to have Claudia's magically wonderful writing back again.

I loved Aslan..and how he later turns into such a romantic and FOR ONCE- THE GUY IS GROVELING AND PINING FOR LOVE BEFORE THE HEROINE. I loved this fact so much - because I always see heroines wishing the hero would see them as something more.

But I loved how he was groveling and pining and torturing himself basically hehe. I'm a sucker for groveling guys what can I say?

But I know their love was worth it. And so says the character development as well - it was all just so fantabulous. And sometimes so unrealistic but I loved it, so who cares.

Plus the Spearman family was absolute love - I wanted to be adopted BAD. But you know, my original family loves me more, so eh. But I would trade places anyday if I could.

Also the amazing chemistry, romanticism, and just...the emotions, confessions, deep dark convos discussed - this is the stuff romance books are made from. AND I WAS HERE FOR IT - every single time!!!

God, I could go on all day and night - but I think you know the point.

CLAUDIA IS GOD and I AM WILLING TO WORSHIP HER TO CONTINUE WRITING!

This book made my absolute day, I tell you.

Until the next read,
TMR

5 Star review of Faking The Game (Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers #1) by Claudia Burgoa

I was beyond excited when I heard that Claudia Burgoa had a new series releasing. She writes such emotional, heart warming stories with characters that are engaging and whose story you cannot help but become quickly invested in.

I love the Spearman family so when I heard this was Aslan Spearman’s story I couldn’t wait to dive in. I knew that the woman who captured his heart would need to be special and Keaton Nealy is certainly that; I really liked her.

Having to attend a family reunion in Hawaii he asks his VP of Operations to pose as his girlfriend. What Keaton doesn’t know is that Aslan has been in love with her for a long time. She agrees and as Keaton has not had an easy life, has walls built to protect herself she feels that nothing can go wrong with their plan. Everyone knows that Aslan does not do commitment so she is convinced that her heart is safe, until it isn’t.

The banter was witty, the romance intense and the love and family just added an additional layer to this well written story. This was a great introduction to Paradise Bay and the family owned winery and I for one cannot wait for the next book.

Welcome to Paradise Bay where there’s a beautiful family owned winery, the wine is flowing and so are the hilarious family dynamics, romance and entertainment. I was beyond excited to be introduced to the extended members on the Spearman family. If you’ve read and loved Jason, Jackson, June and Alex Spearmans’(Alex is my all time favorite) books as much as I did, then you will most definitely love their cousins. Claudia Burgoa starts off this brand new series with Aslan Spearman’s book and Faking The Game is a good one!

Aslan Spearman is a billionaire playboy with a jaded opinion on love and relationships. When his overbearing mother(she’s a funny riot) harasses him about bringing his “girlfriend” to the Spearman family reunion in Hawaii, this is the perfect opportunity for him to ask his gorgeous and smart VP of Operations, Keaton Nealy to pose as his fake girlfriend. It seems like a good idea considering he’s been crushing on her for a while. Keaton has a lot going on in her personal life and not in a good way. At this point, what does she have to lose by pretending to be her boss’s girlfriend. And yep, she has the major HOTS for Aslan. I don’t blame her as he has the Spearman charm and even though he can be a bit cynical at times and demanding, it doesn’t take away the fact that he’s utterly irresistible and very swoon worthy.

I was laughing out loud a lot at Aslan and Keaton’s snarky and funny interactions. I could definitely feel the heat and chemistry stirring between them. And when all of that combustible sexual tension is released, it’s worth it. They also have some endearing and touching moments that made my heart happy and they’re perfect for each other.

Aslan’s brothers and sisters are a fantastic addition to the storyline, I’m so invested in this family and I’m looking forward to reading their future books.

1.5 stars rounded-up

Holy bollocks, was this bad.

It was my first story by this author, and needless to say, I won't be coming back for seconds from miss Claudia Y. Burgoa (even though this is a series and my annoying brain is usually set on making me finish those through all the misery, lol).

The first thing to know? Book's summary is a classic case of false advertising - summary focuses on family reunion and fake dating + commitment issues on MMC's side. Let me tell you, those things make for approximately 3% of the plot. And don't get me wrong, I don't want the story to be focusing solely on the tropes, or whatever. But if you're marketing your romance as fake-dating, then you'd better be utilizing that???! In case of this book, it's a total MISS - there's almost no tension, no struggling to hold back, no blossoming feelings.

We get two characters, and almost immediately, we are TOLD that they've been hot for each other for years. MMC is said to have commitment issues due to past relationship drama (we get an info dump in the very first chapter, I believe) but then after few chapters, it's like a switch, and suddenly he's all in love, all in, wants to be with FMC 4EVA. Most of their feelings seem to be worked through even before the family reunion, and said reunion takes up like 2 chapters?? And again, we are TOLD in descriptions what happened, we don't see actual action even once, apart from one out-of-nowhere no-build-up-whatsover lukewarm sex scene that was about exciting as scrubbing my shower clean.

Other random thoughts:

✘ no emotional stakes, weak characterization, weak pacing - overall, I think this author just doesn't have a lot of knowledge on how to build a story and its characters? conflicts got resolved within one chapter. fmc had a plethora of family problems and emotional baggage, but does it make a dent in a relationship? nope. mmc finds out her problems almost right away and fixes them in one heroic swoop, and that's all. the writing just felt lazy. the setup - weak as it was - was there, but there was no will to grow it into something actually emotional and conclude it in a real, rewarding way.

✘ abandoned plot points - what's the point of building all this drama around mmc's past relationship (he had a fiancee who cheated on this with his cousin and he caught them at his father's funeral - I mean, talk about torture porn, lol) and having that as one of the reasons for why he needs a fake girlfriend at that family reunion, if then the cheating fiancee doesn't even show up???! it's just one scene with the cousin, he complains to mmc about still being frozen out by most of the fam and that's it. no follow-up whatsoever.

✘ inconsistencies - e.g. in one chapter mmc clearly states it's wednesday and they're going back from reunion the next day (aka thursday???), the very next chapter in fmc pov she states it's wednesday and they're going back just now - it might be a small thing, but there were multiple small things like that, and it always drives me NUTS because it's YOUR STORY, how do you not pay attention to this shit???!

Anyway...this was dry AF, do not recommend.

4* It’s Complicated Stars

This is the first book in the Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers series and is Aslan Spearman’s story.

Aslan comes from a large family and is also a triplet. His mother keeps badgering him about why she has not met his girlfriend and she wants to make sure that he is bringing her to the Spearman family reunion in Hawaii. The reason he has not introduced his mother to his “said” girlfriend is because he is indeed single and does not do relationships after he was hurt by his former fiancée who cheated on him with is cousin.

Keaton Nealy is the VP of Operations for Aslan’s company, and they are close friends. When she happens to be in his office when his mother calls about the family reunion, he proposes that Keaton accompany him on this reunion and pose as his “fake” girlfriend.

He has also had a slight crush on her and this week away will be easy to fake and could be a lot of fun too. Unbeknown to him Keaton is also attracted to him, but she is scared to commit to any sort of romance because she is dealing with a lot of personal family matters.

Can their fake relationship in Hawaii be just that or will boundaries be crossed?

It was fun to be reunited with the very large Spearman family again! The love and care they have for one another is priceless.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is an amazing start to what is surely gonna be an all-consuming series. This group of Spearman’s of Paradise Bay have a crazy-fun dynamic. Aslan Spearman made me so giddy and brought a smile to my face. I just couldn’t get enough of him. He has absolutely met his match with Keaton. I love her character and their relationship!! I highly recommend this new series.

ARC provided in exchange fo an honest review

Claudia Y. Burgoa has become one of my favorite authors in a very short time, nobody writes family sagas like her, with dynamics that are so entertaining, funy and that make you want to be part of the universes you are reading. In addition to the fact that her stories always manage to touch me personally: making me feel each of her words and the experiences that her characters go through.

Of course Faking The Game was no exception, here we meet a different branch of the Sperman family, for me it's the first approach to them, and I loved meeting Aslan and the rest of his siblings, I loved the relationship he has with all of them, but especially the bond he shares with Gatsby & Lysander, as well as his personal story: the way the three faced the death of their father was very interesting and moving to read. Aslan was a very different character from what I imagined, I really liked his personality, the constant flirtation towards Keaton, his desire to avoid his mother at all costs and even the moments in which he behaves like an asshole because I think that gave his character a lot more realism.

Keaton is a woman who has gone through many things throughout her life, her family is far from perfect, she has financial problems despite having a good job and she is constantly fighting against insecurities that broke my heart, she is always on the lookout for her mother and younger sister, and she is a VERY hard-working, professional and responsible woman, in addition to having a pure and grateful soul which is what leads her to help Aslan in a moment of despair.

One of the things I enjoyed the most in this book was the attraction that already exists between Keaton & Aslan, I loved that they were aware of how attractive the other is, but on top of that Aslan also recognizes the importance of Keat in his personal and professional life. And although her feelings become more evident when they begin to pretend, it is still very interesting to read her discover what she really wants, not only from her boss, but from her future, and try by all means not to fall in love with him in the process.

Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers # 1

Aslan Spearman is one of the most eligible bachelors in San Francisco and runs Spearman LP, is a workaholic, doesn't really believe in a HEA and is kinda afraid of his Mom. There's a family reunion coming up in Hawaii and she has been on him for a year to bring his girlfriend, the problem is, he doesn't have one. He has tried every which way to get out of it but not a chance. Aslan is a triplett and comes from a large family, they have some ideas to help him.
Keaton Nealy is his VP of Operations and his right hand. She has been taking care of her mom and 18 yr old sister for years. Her mom has dementia and is in a facility and Keaton has been paying for it all and is now about to lose her house, her mom getting kicked out of the facility and she's broke. She gets paid well, there's just too many bills to pay for her to get caught up.
When Aslan finds out about Keaton's problems he offers to help her and she turns him down. Then he comes up with the "be my fake girlfriend for this reunion" and she finally gets talked into it, but with her rules.
These two have a great working relationship and the barbs back and forth are hilarious. But can this fake agreement work? Will something more come of it?

My favorite lines--"If I don't introduce her to you it's because you people sound scary and overbearing. She's shy, quiet, and doesn't like crowds. Our family is a handful. You're their scary leader."

AUDIO REVIEW
After reading the prequel, My Favorite Night I was excited to see where M Burgoa would take us as she brings the Spearman’s and the Aldridge families together and book 1, Aslan Spearman’s story was everything I expected and so much more.
Jason Clarke and MacKenzie Cartwright dud a fantastic job bringing this story and the characters to life, the banter was witty and perfect and the love and passion was spot on. Faking the Game was one of those listend that I will listen to again and again.
Aslan needs a girlfriend to take to the family reunion in Hawaii and who better to ask than Keaton his VP of Operations after all she has worked for him forever and they are friends so surely she can pull off being the fake girlfriend. Well problem is there are feeling that have been hidden over the years so what happens when they spend time in a villa with only one bed, what happens when lines are crossed, will love win the day or will friendships be destroyed……..
This book ticked all my boxes, it’s full of witty banter, it full of love and passion but it’s the families that take this book to another level with their strong loyalty and family values. If you love small town romances with the perfect mix of love and humour, visit Paradise Bay and catch up with thr billionaire brothers and their partners. A perfect start to the new series.

What took me so long to start reading this author?

4,5 stars.

I love family-based books, I'm a sucker for feel-good romance and more often than not I need to read something that eases my heart and calms my racing mind.
As I was reading this book, seeing the main characters interact, getting a glimpse of what's to come, and seeing what I assumed were the previous characters already living their HEA, all I could think about was "what took me so long to start reading this author?".

I don't even know for sure what magic she played, but there was something about her story, about her writing, about her characters that called to me and hooked me from the very first page.
This book was sweet, funny, and sexy.

Aslan and Keaton were more than boss/employee. Don't get me wrong, this is an office-romance-meets-fake-relationship. But it was more than that.
First of all, there was nothing fake or strictly professional about their compelling dynamics. Their banter was genuine, as were their feelings for each other.
They had amazing chemistry, and through the whole ordeal, they respected each other. Even before it all started, actually.
They were friends and willing to do whatever it took to help each other.

And to add to their cute love story was Aslan's family. That crazy crew of nosy, meddling, funny, boisterous people.
I can't wait to read the next books in this series.

I already loved this new series, especially after reading Caspian's novella. Though I was actually looking to Caspian's story. But I'd take anything from Claudia. And this is Aslan and Keaton's story. Keaton has been Aslan's confidante and VP of Operations for his company. When a meddling mom and a family reunion forces his hand to fake date, he chose Keaton to do it.

I loved their relationship even before they started fake dating. They've got the witty banter and chemistry. Though they didn't realise it until now. Which is kind of weird for me, not bad weird. It's just that Aslan only noticed his feelings for her is different once they started fake dating and it wasn't shown that he has always felt that way for her. It kind of felt abrupt, his change of feelings. But I still loved him. Though I did not like his change of behaviour there towards the end, he really hurt Keaton.

And Keaton. I got really frustrated with her. I can't relate to her at all. I mean, I feel for her and what she has to go through with her mother and now she has her sister depending on her. She's not just wishy-washy, she's just frustrating, stubborn, and all she does is run away and evade rather than talk things out with Aslan. I don't know how he can be so understanding with her that way.

I still enjoyed their story. I think one of the redeeming factors is the rest of the Spearman's family. I loved them, especially Aslan's siblings. They really took in Keaton and her sister and accept them into the fold. I can't wait the rest of his siblings' stories.

Am I surprised this book was AMAZING? No.
Claudia delivers every single time, and I’m here for that♥️

Claudia writes short stories which i love and crave every single time, i just can't wait to read her next book always. They are full of life and love, this is the type of book that I would describe as palate cleanser as they are literally so cute and short, and fills your heart with happiness and you feel happy at the end of the book.
I honestly can say I love their relationship, their whole dynamics was really cute to read. They had attraction for each other but never made a move on it until they needed to or let me say, their forced proximity actually gave them the push to do so.
I loved how goofy he was, trying to help her in everything, especially with her sister. Like the scene where he actually hugged her, and comforted her made me want to be Sav for a good second. She gain a whole family.

Tropes:
-Friends to lovers
-Billionare.
-Boss/employee
-Guardian
-Fake relationship.
-THE GUY FALLS HEAD OVER HEELS FIRST. *the best in my humble opinion.

Aslan is a successful business who has been burnt by love in the past and is cautious about repeating the circumstance. In order to avoid his mother’s matchmaking attempts he has been pretending to have a girlfriend but a family reunion in Hawaii has brought things to a head. He needs to bring her as confessing all isn’t an option but lucky for him he has the perfect woman in mind.

Keaton is not only Aslan’s employee, but she is his friend as well. Her life is complicated and full of responsibilities which she can’t be distracted from so Aslan’s request will either be the answer to her problems or create some new ones.

This is a heartwarming story about love and family which is filled with humorous interactions and romance as Aslan and Keaton push the boundaries of their relationship. The boisterous Spearman family is back in full force which leaves us wanting more of them and their stories.

Thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted romance!

"Do I have a crush on my boss? Who wouldn't? He's handsome with a capital A.F."

Aslan Spearman is known for being a gruff and demanding taskmaster, but underneath he's all heart. Keaton Nealy learns this first hand when he helps her out with her family situation. In return, she's going to help him out with his family situation. However, nothing is ever that easy when you throw in an overbearing mother, and pesky feelings that fool you into believing that something fake is actually turning into something real.

"My game plan is to woo the f*ck out of her, make her fall in love, and never let her go."

This was such a fun read! I loved the banter between Aslan and Keaton, as well as the banter Aslan had with his family members. I loved the dynamic between Aslan and Keaton - they spent so much time together due to work that they didn't realise just how much they really meant to each other. I loved how he wanted to fix Keaton's problems and take care of her and her family, but I also adored how shamelessly he flirted with her! Low, angst, low drama, but plenty of humour and Spearmans! So good to see some old faces!

This book kicks off a new series with the Spearman family. I'm already in love with this family. There are 8 siblings with plenty of personalities. It's Aslan's journey to love. Aslan has such a big heart, but his past has made him leery of love. Aslan and Keaton are awesome together. My heart goes out to Keaton because life has not been kind to her. Though agreeing to a fake relationship with her boss gives her more than she every imagined. I loved how the Spearman family opened their arms to not just Keaton, but her sister as well. This is a book filled with plenty of heart and feels. I can't wait for the next book!

This was such a fun and easy read that I loved from start to finish. I loved watching Aslan and Keaton struggle to keep their feelings for each other under wraps and stick to the agreement. And the way Aslan stepped into the role where he provided support and assistance to not only Keaton, but her sister too was so sweet.

Claudia Burgoa has launched a new series, Paradise Bay Billionaires, and I am so excited. I’m keen to see more from the Spearman family, I can already imagine some of the crazy antics we might see from this crew!

like watching a hallmark rom com

Underwhelming, don’t waste your time. One sex scene, too many characters to remember, editing errors, and a pretty cheesy story. If that’s your thing great. I’ve never written a review of a book, but I feel like I needed to warn everyone.

this was my first book by Claudia Y. Burgoa and it won't be my last. I really enjoyed this. Keaton and Aslan had such a great working relationship/friendship that neither wanted to act on the feelings they had and ruin anything. I'm so glad Aslan kept pushing to get what they both wanted :)

Of course, not a great piece of literature, but for the genre, a real page turner.

Faking the Game by C. Burgoa is the first book in the Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers Series.
Aslan Spearman, yes one of The Spearmans, needs a girlfriend. He's one of triplets, part of a big family with lots of siblings.
And then there's Keaton. Sweet Keaton with lots of issues and family problems. She works hard to make ends meet. Annd Aslan is her boss.
This fake relationship story is great, justr great. Excellent written, beautifully thought out and told. FtG is a winner, 5 stars.

I absolutely loved Faking the Game by Claudia Burgoa; it is an incredible fake dating opposites attract love story. It is the first book in her Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers series. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Claudia Burgoa showed that she is an amazing storyteller and has once again provided her readers with amazing characters. I love all the characters in Faking the Game, they feel like family! Faking the Game filled me with a rollercoaster of emotions, I could not put it down, and I loved every moment on every page. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong females, loving families, and friends, who always support one another? I love how Claudia Burgoa always manages to create the "perfect" heroine, who is a strong woman on her own, to balance out the sexy, swoon worthy men. I really enjoy how the book is told in the first person from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. My favorite moments are the ones that pull at my heartstrings that cause me to sigh, as I read the heartbreaking moments. Faking the Game is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. It is filled with all those things that I have come to love and expect in Claudia Burgoa love story, and she did not disappoint, especially with the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Faking the Game is a love story about, Aslan Spearman, CEO Spearman LP and Keaton Nealy, VP of Operations for Spearman LP. Aslan has been telling his mother that he has been dating someone for over a year. The Spearman family is having a family reunion in Hawaii, and Aslan’s mother, Dawn wants Aslan to bring his girlfriend to the family reunion. Aslan helps Keaton with some issues that she has with and because of her mother. Keaton agrees to be Aslan’s fake girlfriend, I love the fake dating agreement that she creates, especially the part about not falling in love with one another. Meanwhile, Aslan already believes that he is in love with Keaton. As Keaton and Aslan begin spending time together in Hawaii, fake dating, things quickly heat up between the two of them. As they spend more time together, they share secrets that they have not revealed to anyone. I love the chemistry between Keaton and Aslan. I love that both Keaton and Aslan were both so vulnerable and that each of them changed because of their love for one another. I love how they share things that they have never shared before, especially the secrets that Keaton shares regarding her childhood. I love all the things that Aslan does for Keaton to keep her with her mother and her sister, Savannah. The saddest part of the story is when Keaton tells Aslan that she is no one’s first choice. My favorite part are the plot twists that involved Aslan and Keaton. I did not see those coming. I also love how the epilogue went above and beyond a happily ever after. I loved Aslan’s proposal. I love the characters and the family dynamic in Faking the Game, the characters feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between the Spearman family, the characters feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between the Spearman siblings especially their teasing that made me laugh. I loved all the characters in Faking the Game, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I thoroughly enjoyed Faking the Game, who does not love a faking dating love story? Highly recommend this incredible love story and am so looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

2.6 Stars (rounding rules apply)

The first time I have read Ms. Burgoa. Wasn't sure what I was going to get, but the synopsis was intriguing so I jumped in and gave it a shot.

One of the things I enjoyed about this story was the characters. The main protagonists, Aslan (ML) and Keaton (FL), are likeable but with flaws. They also both grow as people. Keaton had a trouble past growing up that has made her feel as if she doesn't have a home or family; while Aslan has so much family that the meddling becomes too much at times. Aslan, however, due to past events has a problem setting boundaries with them; while Keaton keeps her walls high - but both are scared of being hurt. When it comes to love both had been burned in the past in different ways, leaving them to be gun shy about being in a relationship. The minor characters are a hoot, and you can tell there is a lot of love in Aslan's family. Keaton's family is a little less happy feeling.

The storyline is also done well for what it was, with plenty of backstory as to why and how Aslan got to this point. We don’t know right off the bat why Keaton is the way she is, though there are tidbits dropped here and there; by the end you have a clear picture and see her moving past it. There are also major factors as to why she goes along with this crazy scheme that Aslan has asked her too. HOWEVER, that’s also a point of contention for me. A lot of the issues she has revolves around money, YET, she is a VP of Operations to a pretty successful company. Even taking on other people’s debt due to reasons its unrealistic to think that someone who makes at minimum $150K (but most likely more considering how successful the company supposedly is) would not be able to get out of debt, or buy a new car. It totally shattered the strong independent woman that Aslan and his brother portray. Yet, even with all that, it doesn’t really cover the family reunion aspect that was expected.

Another issue that totally caused me to be like huh; is when we hear everything about this family reunion and how overbearing his family can be, how there may be drama with a cousin, and honestly the whole premise of the story is about this family reunion – yet, it’s only like maybe three chapters long in this whole book. Otherwise, we spend most of the time watching Aslan and Keaton dance around each other. It was very disheartening because I liked the premise of the story. Thought the story like could be great! C’mon who wants to go to a big family reunion, in general? Add in a HUGE family and their meddling dynamics? That is like gold right there. So much could have been done, and so little was.

Now, it’s a romance novel – and it was a SLOOOOOOOW burn. It was totally clear they liked each other, and Keaton fought way more than made sense when it came to determining boundaries for their “fake” relationship. The family wasn’t even informed about their ‘relationship’ until about half-way through the book. Then they finally get the contract situated, but of course as soon as they leave town and get to the Reunion they go at each other like bunnies – or that’s what hinted it- which breaks all the boundaries she sets; or so we are informed as there are not many steamy scenes, but definitely mention of the deed being done. It was a letdown in that regard. So much build up, but the chemistry wasn’t there (or shown to us).

Overall, the expectation that was set was not met – but the story itself wasn’t bad and a relatively good plot line. And had my expectation based on the synopsis/description had not been set to this being about them faking a relationship at a family reunion the rating would have been higher.

Totally a 1-chili pepper on the 5-chili pepper scale (this is of course subjective, and solely my opinion.)

Another fantastic romance by Ms. Burgoa. Aslan Spearman is a triplet and cousin to Jackson, Jason and Alex. This side of the Spearman’s are alot crazier. Aslan's VP of Operations is Keaton. She is his sounding board, best friend and someone irreplaceable. He has loved her for years, but denied it to himself out of fear of his past. Keaton had known rejection all her life. She knows Aslan doesn't do commitments so she doesn't want to lose her heart to him. A Spearman family reunion forces Aslan to ask Keaton for help posing as his girlfriend. The rest is history!

I loved reading this book so getting to listen to it brought to life by the talents of Jason Clarke & MacKenzie Cartwright made me love these characters even more. Aslan and Keaton are perfect together. Ms. Burgoa's books include humour, sibling banter, HEA and the importance of family.
