Piper Sheldon hit it out of the park with the perfect ending to a lovely series. I remember reading My Bare Lady back in 2019 - which now feels like happened over two centuries ago. Although I was immediately captivated by all ladies in the Scorned Women Society, Gretchen LaRoe was definitely a mystery and one of the girls I was very much looking forward to learning more about.

And yes, her personality is amazing and she is one of those characters who come become an instant best friend, but no one - and I really mean no one - could expect what a hero that Vincent Debono would make.

It Takes a Woman brings a fresh twist to the marriage of convenience trope. As two people who have sworn off love, Vincent and Gretchen know that even though they have loved and lost they still want companionship. That's the main reason they decide to get married, a mutual understanding of what they want in life.

It's safe to say that keeping things detached and business-like will not be a possibility, since they have absurd chemistry. But the journey that it takes for them to realize that our hearts are capable of infinite love and that it's never too late for a new beginning is an adorable and heartwarming story, that will impact Piper's long time fans but will also be charming for any new reader looking for that perfect swoony romance.

Thank you so much to Piper Sheldon, Brooke Nowiski and Smartypants Romance for approving me for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

‘”I’m usually the one taking pictures from the side by myself.”

Her voice remained neutral but the words caused me to turn toward her. I slid an arm around her waist, bending her backward so that she had to hold on to her beret to keep it from falling off. Our faces were inches apart.

“You’re not alone anymore.”

Her eyelashes fluttered, her mouth parting slightly. She looked like she wanted to be kissed.

“Neither are you,” She whispered.’

With this being the final SWS book from author Piper Sheldon, I knew before going in to this book that it was probably going to be incredibly emotional. That was a serious understatement. Not only because we’re saying farewell to these amazing, supportive and astounding women, but because the calibre of writing involved in this book is unparalleled. Author Piper Sheldon has produced one of the most magnificent, emotionally penetrating and intensely passionate romance stories I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. This is book, is legitimately, my top recommendation for 2022.

Piper’s depth of understanding and compassion when giving life to these characters is just remarkable, showcased in every word and sentence of her writing. She peels back the flamboyant, shiny and colourful exterior of her characters, offering readers insight into these wonderfully complex and inspirational personalities.

Gretchen LaRoe and Vincent Debono are two such characters. Two seemingly mismatched personalities who absolutely belong to one another. That is what Piper does so well. She highlights the individuality of each protagonist. They stand confidently and beautifully in the spotlight all on their own. But as the story progresses she shows what is beneath the surface. That the ‘life of the party’ character, who has helped everyone else find love, can feel loneliness like a constant toothache. That the surly, buttoned-up, suit-loving character- who says little- has a wealth of love and sensuality burning inside of him.

Watching Gretchen tease and poke at Vincent was marvellous. Her personality is so daring, self-assured and assertive, whereas Vincent was more self-contained, serious and a little broody. She brought out his fun and flirty (*ahem* dirty) side, and he showed her that intimacy and devotion come in many different ways. That contrast was just so damn alluring.

To me, ‘It Takes A Woman’ felt slightly different to the other SWS books. They’re all truly exceptional stories and every one of those books is utterly unique, but for me, ‘It Takes A Woman’ seemed to utilise all of the love, sisterhood, acceptance and fun from the previous books -expanding it- before pouring it all back into this story, elevating it into a position of breath-taking beauty. There was just something more mature, gripping and thought-provoking in this tale. Not to mention the scenes were I snort-laughed my way through, from start to finish; Having the gang all back together for one last happy-ever-after adventure.

The wrap up was superb. I’m not going to detail what happens or with whom, but I will say that author Piper Sheldon has written the best conclusion possible for our girls. With significant closure. I cried, I’m not going to lie. I did. I also laughed like a loon. Ultimately I ended the book smiling, even though this was the last one. Our women no longer scorned but each finding friendship and love and a magnificent family made up of Green Valley misfits.

‘”No ex left behind,” we said in unison and clinked glasses.’

Favorite Quotes:

I was unsettled. Like the time I saw my fourth-grade teacher wearing jean shorts at the Piggly Wiggly. How dare someone have a life outside the one they occupied in my head?

I was hit by the overwhelming reality of how fast time was moving. Not just moving but passing me by. It was like I was standing still, and life was blurring around me like a time-lapse camera.

My family always claimed we were from a long line of witchy women. Something about us attracted dangerous men. I suspected it was just my great rack.

I’m so full of sugar, I could sneeze cotton candy,

I would have smacked anybody else that said that to me. And yet… and yet. Wasn’t it interesting that our internal voices were the hardest to ignore?

My Review:

While I’d never want to live there, I have always enjoyed my virtual visitations to the uniquely quirky denizens of the oddly enticing Green Valley, Tennessee. They are highly unorthodox, and as amusingly entertaining as a small rural enclave could possibly be. The delightful series of the Scorned Women Society is a prime example of the clever comedic storytelling I’ve come to expect from Smartypants Romance. The smirk-worthy humor has bite, as do the insightfully written storylines and heart-squeezing inner musings. I’ve read and gobbled up each one and am content with the finale and how their saga was wrapped up, although I am more than a bit melancholy in bidding them farewell.

This series has been one of my favorites in the Smartypants world (don’t tell the other series!!). Piper is such an amazing job of adding to the Green Valley world. This last book completed the series in a way that felt perfect for all these characters.

Gretchen and Vincent’s story is a modern marriage of convenience, which is very hard to do in contemporary romance, but it worked SO WELL for these two! Their grief, and they way Piper has them vocalize it in her book was magnificent, they will pull on your heart with their understanding and experiences with grief.

Gretchen and Vincent have so much chemistry, and Vincent is definitely giving Devlin a run for his money as my favorite SWS hero.

This book has me laughing out loud, and tearing up multiple times throughout. The hi-jinx of the core four was hilarious and so satisfying to see them happy and growing in their relationships. Goodness, just thinking about the series as a whole has me tearing up again. The ladies of the SWS were such amazing companions not only to each other and their partners, but to the readers as well.

Who knew? Obviously, Gretchen has been the savior of the women in Piper Sheldon’s Scorned Women Society romances. She’s been bold, insightful, a bit quirky, and protective of her fellow scorned women sisters. So it’s no surprise that her story, It Takes a Woman, would proffer up a story worthy of her. But who would have guessed that the seemingly cross/serious Vincent Debono would be handsome and a cinnamon roll hero who steals your heart in Piper Sheldon’s newest book?

I have loved most of Sheldon's Scorned Women’s Society series books. The first two captivated me as Sheldon crafted stories that mimicked favorite musicals. However, I wasn’t bowled over by Roxy and Sanders’s and Skip and Jack’s stories in the last two books. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoyed them. I liked them, but they didn’t have the same emotional pull, for this reader, as the first two books of this series.

And then Sheldon gifts us with Gretchen and Vincent, and she’s ended this series on heart-string pulls and tears.

Gretchen and Vincent are special because they’ve loved before. Deeply and abundantly. And they’ve endured loss. In the shadow of loss, they’ve lived their lives for others but not for themselves, believing they don’t need love again because it’s already previously visited them. However, Cupid hits hard with their marriage of convenience story, and the depth of love they find between each other makes you weep. Vincent is seemingly serious, hiding behind an emotional wall to protect his broken heart. However, Gretchen breaks it down. Similarly, Gretchen hides behind her care for others, her insertion into the gossip of Green Valley, and her friends. Just as Gretchen obliterates Vincent’s walls, he does the same for her.

The simple and best part of It Takes A Woman is Vincent and Gretchen’s eventual realization that they can find love again. Their developing chemistry and their slow devolvement into love make for a story that grips your soul, and I think it’s the best story of this series, hands down. I’m really sure what I’ll do without the gorgeous covers of this series…

What an amazing ending to this equally amazing series! While I’m sad it’s over, this was such a solid way to say goodbye.

We’ve seen Gretchen lovingly meddle in her friends’ lives throughout the series, and when the time comes for them to return the favor, she’s already one step ahead. Though she knows she’ll never love again after losing her husband, she’s going to marry fellow widow Vincent for companionship and maybe to start a family. Since they’ve both found true love and lost before, it’s not like they’ll fall in love again, right?

It’s hard to find a contemporary marriage of convenience story that feels realistic but I actually totally got it in this one. I fully understood their reasons and honestly it made sense to me. I was definitely emotional reading parts of it, the grief and loss made my heart hurt but don’t worry, I was feeling happy by the end!

I loved how their relationship unfolded in the most unique way. It was beautiful to watch them soften towards each other. I thought Vincent was so swoony as he was so careful with Gretchen’s heart. I also loved seeing the other SWS gal’s being happy and living their lives with their partners.

Such a great book and series!

The resident matchmaker is about to find her match and I AM HERE FOR IT! Gretchen has managed to have her finger on the pulse of her friends' romances and now it's her turn to find her special someone and he's not the person she thought he'd be. Well, it is the person, it's just that Vincent's not nearly the stodgy work-a-holic she pegged him as once she starts to get to know him.

But Gretchen being Gretchen, she romanced things all out of order. She and Vincent tie the knot first, both loudly proclaiming they were just doing it because it made sense in the grand scheme of things. Then their hearts get involved. Or, well, then they figured out that they caught the heart-feels for one another and they had to work their heads (separately, mind you, because Gretchen doesn't like to take the easy route) around that without everything falling apart on them.

Not going to lie, these two lonely souls mesh well together. They've both experienced loss and they've both come to the conclusion that they want more than an empty house to go home to at night. Vincent adores how brightly Gretchen shines and Gretchen likes all the facets of Vincent she uncovers as they spend more time together. Sure, they had a few road bumps along the way, but these things happen, amirite?!?!

A marriage of convenience, a thanksgiving dinner that ended up being messy fun, found family, a few steamy encounters, and a whole lot of time spent with the SWS crew. (And might I just say I find it HILARIOUS how Vincent kept getting intimidated by Devlin's glares. The dude has some quality glaring power and I am 100% behind that.) *heart eyes* all around, my friends. I'm going to miss this group.

It Takes a Woman is another amazing read from Piper Sheldon!

Gretchen and Vincent were so interesting together. I loved getting to watch their relationship grow and change as they found something special with one another. They fit so well together, and after getting to know Gretchen throughout the series I liked getting to see her get her HEA.

There is so much to love here. The engaging writing, an emotional and unique story, great friendships, and fantastic romance. I both wanted to rush through the book to find out what happened next and slow down to savor it.

Thank you to the author and Smartypants Romance for providing an ARC for an honest review.

I am such a fan of Piper Sheldon and her Scorned Women's Society series. (I'm a fan of her paranormal books and everything she writes, honestly). The concept for the series is so compelling, and I generally gravitate toward stories with epic girl squads. And the Scorned Women might be the most epic #squadgoals in romantic fiction.

These ladies support and encourage but they also give each other room to grow and change. Gretchen's story is all about growth. She has been this bombshell, larger-than-life presence for three books and a novella, and I was frankly, chomping at the bit for her HEA. And Piper Sheldon did not disappoint. She delivered a breathtaking conclusion to the Scorned Women's Society series and I can't wait for everyone to read it.

'It Takes a Woman' is heartfelt and humor with characters so engaging you'll want them in your circle. This modern marriage of convenience with a twist should be at the top of every romance-lover's TBR.

It’s the end of an era - the final book in the Scorned Women’s Society by Piper Sheldon. They say “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” but also, maybe plan to cry a little bit with this one.

This author is not one to shy away from heavy themes and heartbreak, but she’s good at repairing hearts after she’s broken them a bit. One of the themes in this story centers around the question “are people lost to time if no one remembers them after they’re gone?”

Gretchen has loved and lost. So has Vincent. They’ve each experienced their one great love story, but they miss intimacy, companionship, and having someone to come home to. Knowing their hearts are safe, maybe a marriage of convenience is right for them. Perhaps they could even work together to create a legacy of their own.

Gretchen and Vincent split their time between Green Valley and NYC, and it feels like readers get the best of both worlds. Green Valley for Halloween and NYC at Christmastime? Yes please!

The SWS lends the story lots of humor and heart as they run interference and ensure Vincent is good enough for their Gretchen. Series readers will enjoy plenty of interactions between the core four and their fellas.

This is a slow burn, but once they get going, there’s a lot of heat between the main couple who enjoy a bit of role playing.

Of note, this story — while incredibly well-written —may be difficult at times for readers struggling with infertility or general baby fever. Family planning plays a large role in the plot, and the author accurately captures the sense of longing.

It was bittersweet to come to the end of the Scorned Women’s Society series. But I’m so happy that Gretchen gets her HEA, and what a great HEA.

“…she was the one who showed me that we aren’t what we endured. That how we live and love now is what matters.”

Gretchen is the one who made sure her SWS friends all found their Happily Ever Afters, but she knows that she already had her one true love and lost him too soon.

“Love may not always be a choice, but you can decide whether to cut yourself off from it or be open to it.”

Vincent is the swooniest of heroes!! I fell for him in a big way. He had to have patience to get through to Gretchen but when he sets his mind to wooing her, he gives it his all and the steamy heat factor is off the charts…
I loved everything about this story and catching up with the women of SWS.

This is the last book in the Scorned Women's Society series (*sobs*). We've been following Gretchen LaRoe since the first book, meddling in her friends' love lives and being an overall badass, so it's no surprise that she decided to do something about her future and accept the marriage offer from Vincent Debono, a widower, like her, who has been admiring her since he arrived in Green valley to work on The Lodge. After all, if one can't ever love again, one can as well marry someone who has a lot of things in common with you without worrying about falling on love, can one? Well, not if there is a handsome, smart, elegant and collected man with a sinful voice and a liking for small touches that makes her panties melt and a bunch of girlfriends ready to jump into meddling into Gretchen's love life.
As always, Piper's writing is perfection. I love the little world she's created in her Green Valley corner. I love the relationships between all the characters in the series, I love the humour, the chemistry, the friendship and I will greatly miss them, though it seems like there is a Benjamin Winston ready to create some trouble.
I didn't know her before she jumped into the Smartypants Romance world, but every book of hers I've read have consolidated her into one of my favourite writers.

This book is the perfect ending to the Scorned Women's Society series. Gretchen LaRoe has been such a big character in the previous stories that it would have been a travesty if she had been left to think that she would never find love again.
Gretchen did not just lose out with Jethro Winston. She was married to the love of her life until he died. Gretchen feels she was to blame for his death and cannot be loved again.
With her classy vintage style and curvy figure, she immediately catches the eye of smart dressed city slicker, Vincent. He is also widowed after his lovely wife died from cancer.
There are mistakes and misunderstandings along the way to true love, following a quick decision to just make the most of it, and get married anyway so that they can both have the family they desire.
The stories of the other SWS folk are also updated along the way.
It makes you want to live in Green Valley!

I have to say that Piper Sheldon outdid herself with her latest book. This is a beautifully written book about finding happiness after loosing your first love. Gretchen is a lovely heroine who would love to move on with her life but also wants to respect her first love. Vincent is so swoon worthy, I have no words. This book shows you that love comes into your life when you need it the most and in different forms. It's a perfect way to end the SWS series. A must read. Especially if you are a Bruce Willis fan. Yippie-ki-yay mother cluckers!!!

Wow what an ending to a lovely series! Each book the main couple has been so unique and wonderful. And Gretchen and Vincent were no different. Gretchen has been pulling the strings and playing matchmaker with the other SWS characters. And Vinny has been in the background doing work at the Donner Lodge. These two have lost their spouses: one to violence and one to cancer. Both never feel capable of love like that again and this book sets out to heal them. This is partially a marriage of convenience but it takes the trope and spins. I loved this new direction in a tried and true trope. I enjoyed the epilogue to this one because of the glimpse into the futures of the SWS.

Proper review coming... When I'm able to stop crying ❤️

Now that I have gathered myself... This book was a beautiful way to end the stories of four Scorned Women finding love, acceptance, and new beginnings. I cried and laughed, and cried a crap ton more. Gretchen LaRoe, you saucy minx, this book was everything I didn't know I needed - but as always you tend to know what's best for people. The journey's the characters went on both internally and together was beautifully portrayed. Piper Sheldon - thank you for taking us on this adventure.

This book can be read as a stand alone - HOWEVER I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU READ THE SERIES IN ORDER!!!!

It is bittersweet to be finished with the Scorned Women. Green Valley is my favorite book land to visit. The quirky, fun, energetic ladies of SWS are always good for some laughs. Gretchen has been a favorite since the beginning. I have been wondering who was going to be her match. Vincent did not disappoint. He was absolutely perfect for her. The "fake" relationship they entered into was never fake for either person. It seemed like love between them from the beginning. I am glad Gretchen got her HEA. After all her hard times and watching her friends pair off, she needed a chance at love.

It Takes a Woman by Piper Sheldon is book four in the Scorned Women's Society, and part of the Smartyp Romance World.
Gretchen and Vincent are a match made in heaven- not. And that sets them up for the ride of their lives and the reader for an highly entertaining read, excellent written, unputdownable full of unrxpected twists and turns that had me in suspense til the last page. A fantastic read, 5 stars.

First of all, I am really honored and glad that my first ARC review is for Piper. From the first book I've read of hers (which was My Bare Lady) I knew she was gonna be one of my favorite authors and as each book goes by she never disappoints but surprises me with her imagination.
The idea that brought these "core four" ( they lay in the core of my heart, to be honest) was not hatred (it usually gets the scorned women in movies and so in my opinion) but their suffering which leads to understanding. What made them stronger was their love, support, and compassion for each other and then for themselves. They are like phoenixes rising from ashes.

One of my favorite quotes from the book (I don't want to spoil but one can see through the Spotify playlist) was
"There's just something in your bones that loves giving previously loved things a second life"

And damn if it doesn't cover each book, especially this book with in the marriage of convenience set with grieving and growth. It explains Gretchen's love of vintage clothes, providing a second chance of love to her friends, by all means. Also, it explains Piper's amazing imagination with musical re-tellings. We are familiar as a reader of romance genre of retellings of mythological pairs (like Hades and Persephone, Cupid and Psyche) or classics (like Romeo & Juliet or Pride and Prejudice) but reading musical ones is definitely awesome as well!! Before reading this book I've watched "Hello Dolly" and I recommend it to people until they do read it as well. You will find lots of easter eggs even before this book! (what a coincidence with timing by the way:D) It may be similar but definitely unique, just like we can relate to through the book of the feelings of characters but they have their own story.

That's what I like about Smartypants romance too, giving each side character of one story a chance to be a hero(ine) of their own.

In conclusion, I will say this story covers all emotional fun-fair; scary parts, roller coaster rides of emotions, all laughing of these four amazing women and their Smitten Men Society (SmS in my own head) a closure, with the best way of redemption of our one of previous hero, Jethro.

Overall, I can say Piper is a true Hufflepuff. She is an author who is hardworking (having a book for all SPR launches), loyal (like her characters. For example to her fans:)) and just (like giving readers a fair understanding of each hero and heroine of the books)

I received an ARC from @smartypantsromance today.
Oh how I loved Gretchen and Vincent. Such a beautiful, sweet, and emotional love story. It was a wonderful way to end this great series. I definitely recommend this book, author, and series.

OMG the feels.

Can be read as a stand-alone.

Ok I knew it was going to be emotional being the last book of the series but then …

Victor, your heart is so bruised and yet you let none of the bitterness that would be totally understandable grow there.

Gretchen, we already knew how much love you have to give, just let it flow girl.

I’m not crying, my eyes were just really dry.
