The Drift: Haven Colony #4

Her Alien Spymaster

Rate this book
She went into cryo-sleep a prisoner and woke up free…

Skye thought freedom meant she could make her own choices. What to eat, where to live, and who she’d love. She’s learning that life doesn’t work that way, and fate has a mind of its own.

The cynical veteran spymaster wasn’t the male she’d have chosen, but he’s the one she’s destined for… Except he doesn’t believe she is his mate. In fact, he’s certain he can’t have one at all.

A spymaster lives for duty - no possessions, no attachments - and absolutely no mate.

Yardan has lived by those rules since the day he took his oath. His duty is to advise and protect Prince Tyran and Haven colony, and lately he’s failed them both. He needs to redeem his honor and uncover the mole in their midst, but first he has to deal with a beautiful cyborg who insists they are destined for each other.

Skye is smart, desirable, and a distraction to his investigation. Could she also be the spy he’s hunting for? Or is she something more dangerous... like the mate he is forbidden to have.

Susan lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidentally swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too damned short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.

Writing is her joy, her escape from reality and the only way she knows of to quiet the nagging harridan of a muse the universe assigned to her.

Spying on her

Oh my! This book was amazing! Such a fantastic case of intrigue and betrayal, topped only by the unexpected love story. The characters were as amazing as always, and I loved that we got to see some conclusion to the ongoing sickness. And is that a hint of another love story in the making? This book is a shining star in the series and I absolutely can’t wait to read the next one.

Susan Hayes never lets down her readers!

I was graced with an ARC in exchange for an honest review & was in NO way disappointed. She hit another one out of the ballpark.

Welcome to Haven Colony, on the world of Liberty. Where Cyborgs, Vardarians, and humans are building a community on the outer fringes of space.

Skye and Yardan are perfectly mismatched, but yet fit so perfectly together.

Yardan is a most distrusting Vardarian - its his job as Spymaster to suspect and investigate everyone. After all, how else can he keep his Prince and other Vardarians safe from nefarious intentions?

Skye is a cyborg brought to consciousness after the wars and her programming is for counseling. Reading people and helping them is her purpose.

They're mates but one problem or another is constantly putting the kibosh on their relationship. The biggest problem being that Yardan isn't SUPPOSED to have a mate at all!

Paired together to investigate who made all the Vardarians ill, they're forced to figure out how to make it work.

The author did an awesome job of character development and growth of this star-crossed couple. As always, her world building is superb.

This is book #4 of her series - The Drift: Haven Colony. It can be read as a stand-alone, but you're really missing out if you don't read the 1st 3 books!

#1 Her Alien Mates
#2 Her Cyborg Champion
#3 Her Alien Forgemasters
#4 Her Alien Spymaster

And, if you want to see how it all began make sure to read all her "The Drift" books. There are 11 in that series and they're great! There you'll see where the Cyborgs originated and what happened when they, and the humans, first encountered the Vardarian race.

Skye and Yarden . . .

Haven Colony is a new beginning for Vardarians, cyborgs, and humans. Yarden, the Prince’s Spymaster, is inherently stubborn and suspicious of everything, and he is completely convinced that he is not supposed to have a mate. Therefore, he feels that Skye, a cyborg, cannot possibly be his mate.

He is correct that there is betrayal going on, but he mistrusts everyone so is not finding who the betrayer is. Skye could be a tremendous help to him because her programming is to counsel, given the ability to read people so she can help them. She might see something that he doesn’t. So when they are put together to investigate who made the Vardarians ill, they need to figure out how to work as one and come up with some answers. And Yarden needs to work on accepting what is, not denying that it could ever happen to him. Will Skye stick by him until he comes to the right decision? Or will she give up? Will they find the betrayer?

Yarden is very stubborn. Finding out that one of the humans is betraying Haven to the enemy had made him very distrustful of humans and Cyborgs. This distrust colors his judgment and he looks at all of them as potential betrayers.

Throw in finding out that Skye, a cyborg, is the mate he should never have makes it all the more complicated. There really isn't any denying her so he is forced to rethink his life.

Skye is pretty understanding for someone who could potentially be rejected and suffer for it. She is good for Yarden because she forces him to confront his bias and rethink how he treats outsiders to the colony.

It takes them working together to begin helping the colony find out who is betraying them.

This was such a great read full of mystery, suspense, action and steamy romance. I love how Yardan struggled against his mate bond with Skye. Of course, to make their romance even 'more rocky', they have to work together on their quest. Expect an exciting read as you follow these two along - and high entertainment value with the banter and sizzling chemistry. And yes, it's well worth, as the author likes to say, reading past your bedtime when you dive into this fun read :D

Excitement and hot romance!
Oh, what a stubborn, tradition-bound spymaster! It’s heaps of fun seeing him reluctantly make changes with the mate-bond to Skye in action. I think Skye makes the perfect counterpart for him with the investigations that need doing. And it’s exciting to see those investigations under way, at the same time as they are dealing with their relentless attraction to each other! Excitement AND hot romance - for entertainment, it can’t be beat!

I love this mixture of cool sci-fi world, crime mystery, and forbidden romance. The storytelling draws you in with the witty repartee and the simmering chemistry. You have to stay for the hard fought relationship and the tense investigation. Skye is a great character. She has a wonderful attitude about her new life. Plus she is like a superhero with a sexy human body and cyborg enhancements. As the princes Spymaster, I see Yardan as the FBI in this story, but he is supposed to be a loner only living for his job. No anrik, and no mate for this Vardarian. The Vardarian mating fever doesn’t seem to care that Yardan can’t have a mate. Even if he needs to solve the case of who poisoned the Vardarians. Great read.

I was so happy when I saw that the 4th book in the The Drift: Haven Colony series by Susan Hayes downloaded on my kindle! I legitimately opened it up and devoured it immediately! I love this series and how Susan just gives us what we didn’t know we needed! This one includes the Prince’s spymaster who isn’t supposed to get a “mate” and oops, the cyborg who is his destined one. It was a delight!

Another five star read from Susan Hayes! This one takes us to Haven Colony where spymaster Yardan is searching for theorist/spies and finds his mahoyen. As a spymaster, he should not be able to have a mate but Haven Colony is a start over for Vardarians, cyborgs and humans…new beginning with old enemies. This book had it all…suspense, romance and espionage. These well written prose will have you devouring page after page. Excellent read!❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love it! Skye is her own type of woman. She shocks Yardan, the alien spymaster, when she tells him he is her mate. He denies it. It is not supposed to happen. When he took the oath & job to be the spymaster, he had all the things about finding a mate medically removed. He couldn't have any distractions to do this job properly. He gets sick from the epidemic that sweeps through the colony, but only effects his race. Skye helps the princess get him back to the palace, & doesn't leave him while they try to figure out what is going on. The humans & cyborgs get together & finally get a better look at it & discover it is a human sickness. They also find out Kara, the human that wants to go home, had set it loose deliberately. She tells them she didn't know it would hurt anyone. When Yardan gets better he is looking for the spies who left Kara the package to give her the virus. Skye goes to the med center to verify Yardan is her mate after he tells her it isn't possible. All the tests are run & she does have the mating fever. But to find out if he is her mate they need samples from him. She asks if they didn't have the ones from when he was sick. They use those to check. She is told it could take a while. There is something that could be done to slow her fever down but it is illegal on the other planet. Skye knows that if she doesn't get Yardan as her mate soon the fever could make her go mad or kill her so she agrees. Later the princess gets it arranged so they are working the case together. He is a sort of biased against the other races. So he is still looking at humans & cyborgs more as the spies who might have set this up. Even as he is coming to accept Skye as his mate he still has not removed her from his list. He is sure she didn't do it, but he has no proof. When they are at a party & she finds out he is still looking more at the others as possible candidates including her, she storms off. She goes back to her office to work on the case for a while herself. She finds something about an alien pilot that seems off. She borrows one of the princesses' shuttles to go to the platform to talk to him. He was a friend, she could probably talk to. Yardan was looking for her & getting worried when she wouldn't answer her comm. She went to see the pilot. He was an alien like Yardan, they had a special sort of nanobyte medical system. They healed quickly & nothing effected them, alcohol, drugs or things like that. She was surprised when she saw him open his door. He couldn't talk very well & didn't look to good either. If she didn't know better, she would say he was very drunk. She tried to say something to him, but he heard footsteps & told her to go hide. She did & she tried to see what was going on as she left. She got a quick look at who scared him so bad before she was in a droid closet. She heard what sounded like angry shouting but not very clear words. When it all died down, she got out. She got the door opened. The pilot had been killed. She let security know what happened, & sent message to Yardan as well. She found out he was almost there with a few others. They get there in time to see her step into an airlock. The man she saw steps out from behind a shield & says something to her shutting her down. Yardan shoots him, & grabs him wanting to know what he did. He kills himself. Yardan picks her up & walks off & hears one of the others yell bomb. They all run for the blast doors & make it through. Later she wakes up to find out two others have been found with what they are calling sleeper codes. They have done things & not realized it. They will just have to be more careful when they scan for things. Yardan tries to resign because he now has a mate. The prince refuses saying they are no longer on that planet anymore. They are making new rules. Skye is going to be his partner. It's a great story.

How do you escape the inevitable…

Haven was a sanctuary for cyborgs, humans and Vardarians alike. When a targeted illness took over the residents, the search began for who was responsible. That meant the veteran spymaster had to work with Skye even if Yardan didn’t agree with her suspicions. Their common goal meant close quarters and the discovery that they were fated mates. With Yardan railing against the inevitable as Skye proved herself over and over again, it meant spicy reading…

I loved these strong characters with Yardan’s uber-cranky facade and Skye’s positivity creating an emotional, dramatic, and surprisingly, humour-filled courtship. She didn’t rail against his unwillingness to realize their connection, instead she went about her business and changed things by just being who she was. Yardan accepting that and embracing her and who she was, meant everything…

Fabulous read!

*I happily reviewed this story

Hooked! I was completely hooked by this book. Welcome back to Haven Colony! Where everyone needs to get along and work together. Put past prejudices behind... and old traditions. There is someone who is threatening Haven and it is up to Yarden and Skye to find out who. Oh there is one little thing... Yarden is the Spymaster and cannot have a mate and yet Skye is his mate. Will that be a help or a hinderance in this quest?
I loved this book and seriously did not put it down. Yup I even was walking a reading at the same time... it was that good.

The Spymaster and the Cyborg

Yardan is the Vardian prince's Spymaster. He's sworn to live a life of loneliness in order to concentrate wholly on his job as chief of all investigations and protector of the prince and his mates. Sky is a cyborg who was recently freed by the Nova Force and must live on the Planet Haven along with other cyborgs, humans, and the Vardarian seeking refuge from slavery and tyranny.
Yardan was modified to not recognize his fated Mate in order to do his job but nature finds a way.

As always this was a hit. The storyline was fabulous and the characters are perfect. There is danger and adventure throughout this story and the action just gets more interesting by the moment. The characters Skye and Yardan are perfectly matched even if he doesn’t see it at first. This was amazing and I am sooo excited for more.

I love the series and can't wait for the next book. Skye was in stasis while other people and cyborgs looked for a safe haven for her and the others. She awakes free and finds that she is the spymasters mate. Yarden gave up everything to become spymaster. When Skye tells him that she is his mate he doesn't believe her. Their story begins. I read an arc of this book and this is my review.

I enjoyed reading this book. Skye and Yardan start out rough and a bit bumpy, but they end fairly smooth. Definitely Honey and Vinegar, but that is what makes them work and their relationship realistic.
While Haven is still being attacked for being just that, a haven, I look forward to the next book in this colony.
I read this via Kindle Unlimited, but consider it truly worth my time and $$.

I loved the interaction between the Spymaster and Skye as to their separate reaction to the news they received. The story kept me entertained and I did not put it down until I was finished with it.

So Yarden’s character in other books made me think of Jafar in Aladdin.
This book gave a different view of Yarden and I admit to have struggled sometimes to get rid of Jafar.
All in all a great read.

Her Alien Spymaster

Yardan was the spymaster destined to live his life in service and alone. Skye knew she was destined to be a mate to him. Things get rocky in more ways than one. Is there light at the end? Very good story.
