Quem dirige nossas vidas?
The Deep State: A History of Secret Agendas and Shadow Governments by Ian Fitzgerald delves into the concept of "deep states" - hidden agendas and special interest groups that operate within governments, often in opposition to democratically-elected officials. These deep states can be motivated by a variety of factors, including the desire to control natural resources such as oil and gas, precious metals, and commodities like mining, as well as the pursuit of power and influence.
In his book, Fitzgerald examines the role of deep states in various countries around the world, including client states that are heavily reliant on external powers, cooperative deep states that work with corporations and accounting firms to further their own interests, and even religious extremist groups that seek to subvert democracy. The author also explores how deep states can exploit and oppress their own people, often through corrupt means such as drug trafficking, arms dealing, and even torture.
Fitzgerald also delves into the concept of "banana republics", where governments are heavily influenced or controlled by outside interests, particularly agri-businesses and lobby groups. He discusses the impact of privatization and nationalization on wealth distribution, the potential for exploitation, and the role of media and patronage in maintaining the power of deep states.
The Deep State is a thought-provoking and eye-opening look at the ways in which shadowy figures and special interest groups can wield influence and subvert democracy. It serves as a warning about the dangers of corruption and the importance of holding accountable those who seek to undermine the rule of law.
The Deep State by Ian Fitzgerald is a good read that uses a broad and perhaps too inclusive definition of deep state. That isn't to say it isn't a valuable read, but it just barely touches on the more current use of the term.
As a history of those people and groups behind the scenes who have their own goals and agendas, this is a very informative book. Many of the instances will likely be familiar to many readers but the value is more in the putting together of these groups into a single history.
The more common use of "deep state" and, often used interchangeably in public discourse, "dark state" focuses on the ever broadening scope of what becomes classified information and why, primarily beginning after WWII. The vague rationale of "national security" offers a blanket under which many goals and wrongdoing can hide from public scrutiny and thus accountability. It is this more common understanding of "deep state" that receives minimal attention here. That said, this doesn't claim to be an in-depth look at current events, it is a history and some of that history does help us to understand some elements of what we are experiencing today.
While I do recommend this book, I would just warn anyone who wants to know specifically about our current socio-political environment that that is not what this volume focuses on. A recent book that offers some insight into both the classification and declassification issues that mask what we currently think of as the "deep state" is The Declassification Engine by Matthew Connelly. The history covered there speaks directly to where we are now. Both books are good reads but have different goals and different working definitions.

Entertaining read, very clear way of writing and really interesting and immerse development, the details are really good. A very scientific approach to the conspiracies about the deep states. This book shows the different types of deep state that have surged through history and how they have influenced our every day lives.
In conclusion I feel that different deep states are described by these words: elitism, secret services, oligarchies, lobbies, corruption, legislation, cronyism, board game, military, geopolitics, status quo, power and money.
Well, I learned that the CIA has been involved in a ton of stuff that I did not know about previously (sorry, South America). I think Fitzgerald’s definition of a “deep state” might be a little broad (there were a couple examples that seemed to be more of plain political corruption) but it was definitely an interesting read.
Note: I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Taking a broad definition of "deep state" – essentially, vested interests that have subverted democratic conventions to their own ends – Fitzgerald then details examples of its actions across the world from antiquity to the present day. It's a dispiriting but educational read. The main problem is a lack of synthesis, a "so what?". We're told a lot about how democracies have failed or been corrupted but not given any sense of what it means, what it tells us, or perhaps even what we should do about it. The last section, about the emergence of digital deep states, comes closest to offering some insight, but it's limited. The book feels more like a resource text than an argument.
