~Traci Hunter Abramson: Secrets of St. Augustine ~5*~
FBI Special Agent Doug Valdez is in the house!!! I loved that he got his own story. I loved seeing more into his background and his family life. This novella was quick and full of great suspense. I couldn't set the book down until I'd read it all. Wowsers! I loved all of the quick thinking on Doug's part and Layla's ability to navigate all that was thrown at her. I couldn't even imagine the shock that she faced from all the different surprises coming her way. This was really fun to read after reading this author's recent release, Not Dead Yet, as Agent Valdez was in several scenes. I'm a fan of Valdez and hope that we'll see more of him in the next Guardian books!!!
~Paige Edwards: In Plain Sight~5*~
Talk about suspense! Jaclyn and Cody were great characters. Their interactions from their initial meeting were full of spunk and chemistry. Jaclyn finds herself in the middle of some serious trouble when she comes across Agent Cody at one point. This leads them on a crazy, intense adventure. Thank heavens Cody was level headed. But the adventure doesn't stop there! Action-packed from beginning to end. I didn't want it to end and would love to see more with these two characters. I would not want to come across certain characters in this novella, no thank you!
~Clair M. Poulson: Hounded~4*
Renn is ready to start his new job with Bob the private investigator. And it sure starts with a bang! Literally!!! This one was full of surprises. I'd sure like to have Renn on my side if anything went wrong in my life. And Kimberly is a very spunky, get things done, lawyer who was awesome to watch whenever she had a scene! Old grudges surface and add another layer of suspense and danger to the story while new concerns and dangers loom ever closer to all involved. Watch your back, your front and your sides because you never know who is coming to get you. But With Renn, Bob and Kimberly on the case, you might just fare more than ok.
Content: All of the novellas I would consider clean. There is suspense and murder, fighting, guns, car chases, danger and such. But all three authors did a great job of writing about them not overly graphic. There is no explicit content, just some clean kisses if any in the stories. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys suspense/mystery/thriller but wants it to be clean. I'd even let my teens read this.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Secrets of St. Augustine: 5 stars If you have read any of this author's books, Agent Doug Valdez will be familiar to you. He's been in quite a few books so his character was familiar to me. Even if you haven't read about him before, his general backstory is covered so you will have a good idea just how awesome he is. This story is action packed and fast moving starting in France and then through Europe. Poor Layla. The history of her short life so far will break your heart. Doug was the perfect person to cross paths with her and save her. I loved this story! (no romance here, but definitely love!)
Hounded: 3.5 stars Author Clair Poulson is going at knowing his terminology and the way the police process works. His stories always sound believable and reasonable. There was a lot going on in this story, and there were a lot of people involved. I didn't have trouble keeping them all straight, I just had trouble connecting to the characters and to any sort of emotion. I liked the strong men who had strong women helping them though. That felt good. (mild romance)
In Plain Sight: 5 stars This story was such a good balance of all things emotional and suspenseful. I loved the dual perspective from both Cody and Jaclyn. Jaclyn's family was brought into the story and it really made things feel homey and gave that touch of realistic as they all shared a cramped apartment for a bit. The food, the sleeping, the bathroom. There was plenty of action and tension to keep me reading, anxious and invested all the way through. My favorite of the three novellas in this book. (This novella held the most romance.)
This is a collection of three suspense novellas that have secrets as the main theme. They're all quite different in style and settings, which offers a good reading variety.
I liked how the first story had a teenager's POV and how it was about family connections instead of a romantic one.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
I loved these three novellas from some of my favorite suspense authors. Each story kept me on the edge of my seat and I had to finish even if it was late and I needed sleep.
Abramson’s Secrets of St. Augustine immediately peaked my interest with a potential murder plot for money. A trust fund baby and a scheme to embezzle her money had me page turning until the end. There was a ton of action and I didn’t know quite how it would end. I loved the emotional punch she packed into her novella.
Poulson’s Hounded Recently was an interesting story about a recently retired army ranger. I liked that you were constantly trying to figure out who did what, was it one person or multiple people that they were trying to track down. While I enjoyed the premise of the story, I found myself constantly rewording the sentences people would speak in the book so it was how people would actually speak. Other than that, the story was enjoyable.
Edwards’ story In Plain Sight was a nail biter! I was pulled in from the get-go and she kept me hanging on until the wild ride was over. I loved Agent Ackert and Jaclyn. They were both stubborn and headstrong. Jaclyn’s eyes was something that stuck out and made the story unique, I loved that part. But the heart stopping action is what kept me page turning. I loved this novella.
If you are an action/ suspense fan, you absolutely need to buy Sinister Secrets! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own
4.5 rounded up to 5 for this trilogy of suspense novellas by some of my favorite suspense authors.
Traci Hunter Abramson: Secrets of St. Augustine (5 stars) FBI Special Agent Doug Valdez is back and this time he's in France looking for money launderers involving an exclusive prep school when one of the students, Layla, discovers there's a plot to kill her. Thankfully Agent Valdez is there to help her and thus begins a super suspenseful game of cat and mouse in France. This story definitely had me reading until the end. How could I sleep with all the close calls Doug, his family and Layla had with the bad guys? I loved seeing Agent Valdez again and getting an update on his family.
Clair M. Poulson: Hunted (4 stars) Retired Army Ranger Renn Huitt has just been hired by a small PI office run by Bob Lyman when the office is shot up. Could it have been done by the person who's been sending Bob threatening letters? When he was a police officer he made quite a few enemies. In addition to figuring out who's targeting Bob, Renn is put on the case of a woman wrongly accused of murder. This one had me wondering if the shooting and the murder case were connected. I really liked Renn and would like to see him get a book of his own or maybe one with him working with Kimberly, the attorney. They worked really well together.
Paige Edwards: In Plain Sight (5 stars) FBI operative Cody Ackert is working undercover to bust a drug ring when a civilian, Jaclyn Girard, inadvertently becomes a witness. Cody must then protect her and her family while discovering who the big bad is behind it all. So much suspense in this one plus some romance and even a meet cute. I loved the dual point of view--it adds so much to my enjoyment of a story. I had to stay up to finish this one--who can sleep when someone's life is danger?
This is a great collection of suspense stories. There's a lot of suspenseful and perilous moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat but nothing graphic. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher Covenant Communications via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Secrets of St. Augustine Traci Hunter Abramson 5/5
So much action packed into a short story, I only wish this could’ve been longer. While it did break my heart reading about Layla’s family situation, it was great to see a story that had a realistic “happily ever after.” The presence, or lack, of family was a great part of the plot that I really enjoyed. And the suspense had me reading this book in one sitting, it was great.
Hounded Clair M. Poulson 3/5
While this book did have some good action scenes, I didn’t love it. A few times it was confusing to me with the threats agains Bob and all the things going on with Alex. This story had a lot of potential, but personally I didn’t enjoy it as much as other books I’ve read by Clair; it does always impress me the knowledge he has in regards to police work so that was a positive in this novella.
In Plain Sight Paige Edwards 5/5
I loved that even though this was a novella, Paige still took the time to do dual point of view. Dual is my absolute favorite and just adds so much more to the story. And even though this was a short story, I felt completely happy with how the story unfolded, and then ended. It was just the perfect length, and a nice quick read that’s easy to enjoy. In fact, this is probably my favorite of the three novellas included in this book.
I received an advanced copy through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a page turner for sure. In Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson, An FBI Agent Doug Valdez, comes to France searching for evidence on money laundering. What he doesn't expect, is finding out that a young teen girl, hid in his vehicle to escape the school she is attending. A wild chase through France and into Sweden.!This was my favorite of the three novellas. This story was fast paced, I had to keep reading.
Hounded by Clair Poulson, when, Renn Huitt, a recently retired Army Ranger, is hired as a private investigator, he gets caught up in the cross hair of a man determined to kill his new boss. In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards Jaclyn just wants to make enough money, to move out on her own. Jaclyn, is in a place she doesn't belong. This was another favorite In this series of stories.
Three novellas, each with their own suspenseful mystery. My favourite was Secrets of St Augustine, a teenager on the run from danger without a family or anyone to turn to. An FBI agent shows up at her school as part of an investigation right in time for her escape. It felt like a longer story as all the pieces unfolded, not just a novella.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Having read many books by these three authors, I knew that I was in for some heart-pounding, and jaw-dropping suspense stories.
Each of the novellas has a story that draws you in quickly and hooks you until the last page. It's amazing how each of these stories felt like you were reading a full-length novel. Also, all three are so well written and very different from each other. The stories vary from kidnappings, and money laundering, to old-fashioned gun and knife fights. It was hard to pick a favorite because all of them had characters I liked and plots that were full of action. This book is fantastic for those that want to read but don't always have the time. I read the novellas over three nights, one per evening.
Mystery-Suspense lovers will want to read Sinister Secrets. Each unique story will keep you entertained and enthralled page after page.
I have read a lot of Traci Hunter Abramson's work and it was nice to meet up with Doug Valdez in Secrets of St. Augustine. Some authors can do novellas well and others not so much, but I think Ms. Abramson Hunter does them extremely well. I don't feel ripped off, or that I am missing anything in the plot, character, etc...I've never read anything by Clair M. Poulson but In Plain Sight just wasn't my cup of tea, I found it hard to connect with the characters, plot, etc...Paige Edwards was another new-to-me author and I will be looking for more by her. Otherwise, Sinister Secrets was good!
Great collection of clean suspense novellas! Perfect read for those who are fans of the genre or readers looking to try it out!
Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Abramson 4.5⭐ Such a thrilling story about a 14 year old heiress on the run from those who want her dead. This has familiar characters for those who have read some of Traci's other books (though not necessary at all to enjoy this story!) Such a beautiful theme of family.
Hounded by Clair Poulson 3.5⭐ Fun story about a group of PIs trying to uncover who is hunting them while they try to solve a case of a girl who is wrongfully accused of murder. Great main character!
In Plain Sight 5⭐ Dual POV about an undercover FBI agent and witness who must be protected after being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Cute romance that was also suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat!
Sinister Secrets has the perfect triple threat of suspense authors to make up this collection of novellas!
Each novella was fast paced, full of twists and turns and plenty of plot twists to keep you wondering what would happen next-and if everyone would make it out alive!
If you're looking to ramp up your suspense reads this fall be sure to pick this one up!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I am a huge fan of suspense and this collection of novellas did not disappoint.
Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson ~*5 stars*
Greedy private school administrators wreak havoc when they decide to take money from helpless children. I loved FBI agent Doug Valdez and his family. Their compassion, love, and willingness to provide shelter and protection to Layla made them my heroes as her world fell apart. The book was action from the start of the story until the very end.
Hounded by Clair M Poulsen ~ *4 stars*
Renn was former military and has entered the PI business. He is excited to begin his new job working with Bob Lyman. His first day on the job was probably more intense than he had hoped. Between shots fired through the windows of the office, searching out homeless people, and some very bad dudes, his work is cut out for him. He works well with others and is hot on the trail of the villains. There is a ton of action happening in this story.
In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards ~ *5 stars*
Jaclyn works four jobs. She happens to find herself in trouble on her way to work when she becomes a witness to a drug deal. Fortunately for her, undercover agent Cody Ackert is quick thinking and tries to shield her from danger. The situation gets out of control and agent Ackert is racing against the clock to keep her from harm. I loved the romantic tension and the action that is from the first to the last page.
If you are a suspense lover, this collection is a great way to pass the time. I could see the drama playing out in my head! Paige Edwards and Traci Abramson are two of my favorite authors of this genre. You can't go wrong when they are penning the pages.
Get ready for sleepless nights! This suspenseful triple packed novella collection kept me on pins and needles! It’s the perfect blend of action, suspense, and even some romance. All three novellas are clean with mild descriptions of violence and a few kisses. It’s a great way to read these favorite suspense authors or get a good introduction to them..
Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Abramson (5 stars) This was my favorite story of the three. It was jam packed from start to finish with plenty of action, suspense, and a great plot. It’s always scarier when kids are involved and this story doesn’t disappoint. Thirteen-year-old Layla’s life is thrown upside down when she borrows her friend’s phone to call her grandmother from her French boarding school. What she finds shocks her, and when she overhears a plot to kill her, she tries to run away as fast as she can. Fortunately, FBI agent Doug Valdez is there undercover investigating a money laundering scheme. When Layla escapes by stowing away in his car, they soon become targets of these ruthless thieves who will stop at nothing. There’s non-stop action as Layla, Doug, and his family try to stay a few steps ahead of the criminals. With wild chases and cat and mouse games all over France and Switzerland, this was so hard to put down. Layla is an intelligent young woman and I loved her interactions with Doug and his family. (Traci fans will happily recognize Doug from previous books.)
In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards (5 stars) This was another favorite and comes in a close second. From start to finish, I was interested in Jaclyn and Cody and hoping their brief encounter at a coffee shop would turn into something more. Jaclyn Gerard happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when she comes across a drug deal with handsome FBI agent Cody Ackert posing undercover. She’s thrown into a whirlwind situation when she witnesses too many things that make her a target of not only a vicious drug cartel, but a dirty FBI agent. With a bit of humor, romance, and unyielding suspense, this novella had me hurriedly turning the pages.
Hounded by Clair M. Paulson (3.5 stars) Ex-Army Ranger and newly hired detective Renn Huitt didn’t realize his first day on the job would prove so eventful! Someone is out to kill his boss, Detective Bob Lyman. On top of this, the detectives are trying to help attorney Kimberly Cantor prove her client is innocent, and that’s just the beginning. Renn and Kimberly are definitely likable, but with so many things happening at once and several characters to keep track of, I felt like I didn’t get to know these characters as well and feel as strong a connection to them. Their romance was an unexpected bonus. With an ample amount of action, dirty cops, a creepy mine, some nasty killers, and a hint of romance, this story definitely has a lot packed into it.
All in all, a great suspenseful collection for old and new fans alike. Definitely one anthology you’ll want to put on your TBR list! I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
Three suspense novellas from Covenant Communications authors. By far my favorite is Traci Hunter Abramson’s story Secrets of St. Augustine (5 stars). It is action packed and I thought would be a very good read for YA audience (and up) as the heroine is only 15. I am a fan of Abramson’s writing and have read the majority of her books.
Hounded (3 stars) by Clair Poulson was interesting but there is a lot going on. Old enemies, corrupt cops, murder cover-up, kidnapping, lawyer, P.I.s, etc. I thought it was a little ridiculous that the bad guys drive almost over 3 hours to find a mine to get rid of some bodies. Idaho is remote enough. But I did learn there is an Atlanta, Idaho.
In Plain Sight (4 stars) by Paige Edwards involves an FBI agent going into training and undercover. I appreciated that Edwards did duel POV and a spark of romance. I was disappointed that two of the books involved corrupt officers, although the situations were different.
All in all a fun read. There is a lot of story packed in all three novellas. They are clean for language and steaminess. Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
With reading Sinister Secrets you get not just one story but 3 short stories by 3 different authors. My favorite story was Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Ambramson. It kept me engaged and intrigued throughout the story. I was not ready for it to end and wanted more. I enjoyed reading the three action packed stories. If you are in the mood for short mystery reads, this is a good collection of authors to pick from. Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I liked this collection of suspense novellas. I liked how each of the stories were so unique and well written. I liked how each of the stories drew me in so I wanted to keep reading and find out who was behind everything. I would read more stories set in each of these locations. I didn’t want the stories to end so that shows to me that they were well done.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This book has three suspense novellas by three authors. Overall, I really liked this book! I have my favorite story, of course, but I enjoyed each novella in this collection. I love suspense stories, and these were all good! Here are my thoughts on each novella:
Secrets of St. Augustine By Traci Hunter Abramson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was hooked on this street from the first page! I wish it was a full length novel, but it’s so good even with the shorter length. I really liked seeing Doug and Jill Valdez, who have been in other books, again, but you don’t have to have those books to enjoy this one. I do want to reread Reagan’s story now though.
Thirteen-year-old Layla has been at boarding school for years, ever since her parents died in a plane crash. She keeps hoping her grandmother will show up to take her away on school breaks, but she never does. When she decides to ask the headmaster one more time if she can go to Washington DC with her best friend, she overhears a conversation that sends her running for her life.
Hounded by Clair M. Poulson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This story had me hooked from the start, as well. I really liked it, but not quite as much as Traci’s, but that’s ok. It is very intense and suspenseful with several mysteries going on at once
Renn retired from the army, and wants to be a private investigator, even though he knows most of his days won’t be terribly exciting-he’s sure he’ll mostly be doing background checks and following cheating spouses. However, his new boss is receiving threatening notes, and the agency has been hired to prove a girl is wrongly advised of murder.
In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book wasn’t quite as suspenseful as the other two, but I still liked it. It definitely has suspense and excitement, but most of it happens towards the end. It’s not a bad thing; just different than the other two in this collection.
Jaclyn has had it with men, so when a man flirts with her during her morning shift at a coffee shop, she doesn’t really go for it, even though he seems like a nice guy. FBI agent Cody had his heart broken in the past and isn’t looking for romance, but when he sees Jaclyn, he might be willing to risk his heart again. When Jaclyn’s life is in danger after she accidentally interrupts Cody on assignment, it will be up to him to keep her safe.
Sinister Secrets will be available September 1, 2022. I received an advanced copy from the authors. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a fantastic read for suspense fans, especially if you want a quick bit of intensity and a complete story, but novella length. Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson: 5 stars I loved the familiar characters of Doug and Jill Valdez. This novella picks up right after the events in Not Dead Yet and was a page turner right from the start. The plot was super intriguing and I loved the wholesome family vibe in the end. Hounded by Clair M. Poulson: 3.5 stars I struggled to get into this one, possibly because it felt like the PIs had a bit of an anti-law enforcement bias making them look really dumb and it didn't feel super realistic to me. I was interested enough to want to know the ending, but it didn't keep my attention the whole time. In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards: 5 stars I loved this fast-paced romantic suspense novella. It felt like a complete story with details and character depth that had me completely hooked. The romance and connection between the two main characters was also just what I was hoping for. Overall, I enjoyed this anthology and recommend it for fans of clean suspense. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In the short story collection Sinister Secrets, authors Traci Hunter Abramson, Clair M. Poulson, and Paige Edwards have come together and created a collection of stories that viewers of the TB shows White Collar and Leverage will absolutely love. Each author has a unique way of writing that draws readers in with intense suspense, a touch of romance, and plenty of adventure and action.
Secrets of Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson This story is fast paced and action packed. It’s the story of a young orphan girl who runs away from private school when she overhears a plot to have her murdered so some men can embezzle her fortune. An agent on vacation with his family discovers her and they work together to save her. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the family focused elements of the story mixed in with the action and many twists and turns of the story.
Hounded by Clair M. Poulson This story focuses on a retired Army Ranger that gets hired as a private investigator. He’s trying to help his boss solve a case where a woman is wrongly accused of murder. But then someone from his boss’s past shows up and keeps sending threatening notes, creating another case they have to jump on to solve. Plenty of action and intrigue as the story jumps around with the two cases to solve.
In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards Of the three stories in this collection, this story has the most romance. A woman in the wrong place at the wrong time, she ends up having to work along side an FBI operative if she wants to live. Readers will love the romantic tension between the woman and FBI agent, as well as the all the action taking place.

Wow! Three exciting and suspenseful novellas with a little bit of romance! I really enjoyed each one! The book description says it all! "Prepare for heart-pounding danger in Sinister Secrets, featuring short stories of suspense from three of your favorite writers: Traci Hunter Abramson, Paige Edwards, and Clair M. Poulson. With all the thrills and chills you’ve come to expect from these best-selling authors, this must-have compilation will keep you at the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Traci Hunter Abramson: Secrets of St. Augustine
FBI Special Agent Doug Valdez is in France looking for money launderers. The last thing he expects is to find a young girl fleeing for her life or the deadly game of cat and mouse that ensues.
Paige Edwards: In Plain Sight
Jaclyn Girard was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and now she’s caught in the middle of a deadly investigation. With danger mounting, she must work alongside FBI operative Cody Ackert if she hopes to survive.
Clair M. Poulson: Hounded
Recently retired Army Ranger Renn Huitt has found the perfect job. Working for Bob, a private investigator nearing retirement, should be easy. But Bob has put a lot of people behind bars—people who hold a grudge. And now they are coming for him."
Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson was my favorite of the Novella collection. The characters and story were well crafted. 4/5
Hounded by Clair M Poulson was not my style. The first page had me cringing. If this had been a full book I would have DNFd. I pushed through the Novella though the story never improved. 1/5
In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards wasn't my favorite from this author. Though it was well written, I failed to connect with the characters or plot. Some parts made me laugh out loud. 3/5
Collection overall personal rating 3/5
I was sent a digital copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
In Secrets of St Augustine we meet a young girl who needs serious help. Who better to help than Doug Valdez who stumbles across the situation? We meet Doug in other Abramson books, but this definitely puts him in his best light. It's a race that kept my heart rate up and turning every page. It's a good thing that this one wasn't a longer story, I am not sure I could have stood the suspense, it was that good!
The second offering is Hounded, where we run into the world of gangs, private eyes, crooked cops, and no nonsense attorneys. Who knew how much of that could be found in Boise, Idaho. This was a fascinating story set in places vaguely familiar to me. The characters were strong, well developed, and relatable. The suspense was on point.
In Plain Sight follows an FBI agent and a teacher with multiple jobs in an undercover operation to find a mole. This is thrilling well-developed story that is somehow as rich and fulfilling as a novel in it's shortened format. I love the characters especially the heroine's mother. She's a firecracker.
Overall this collection is worth the read and would be perfect when you want to read something in the evening and not stay up all night, but only if you can read one story at a time. Never mind.... Make sure you have time.
I received an early copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
This was three short stories. All were filled with suspense and only a little sappy. I liked the first one the best. Couldn’t put it down. The second left a couple of loose ends I would have liked to see tied up. The third was pretty gripping but I didn’t love the story or the characters but it was still good.
A collection of three suspenseful non-stop action stories will certainly keep you staying up waaay longer than you expected! You will be absorbed in the stories that have high speed chases, crooked officials, stowaways, kidnappings, romance, and of course, high speed chases and edge of your seat plot twists.
Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson (5/5) You would think if you come from a family with a vast fortune, that your life would be free of worries. But, that is not Layla’s case. She must spend her spring break at her boarding school and in doing so, uncovers the diabolical plot of school officials. Now, with the help of FBI agent, Doug Valdez, Layla is running for her life. I enjoyed the chase through Europe and the daring escape Layla must make in order to avoid capture. It was also fun to read about a courageous and intelligent high school girl as the main character. The ending was perfect!
Hounded by Clair M. Paulson (3/5) Renn Huitt is quickly thrust into action after being hired by Detective Bob Lyman as he tries to follow leads of two separate cases. I liked that Renn never backed down from danger and pursued the truth, putting aside his own safety to see justice done. The scary scene in the mine was my favorite part of the story.
In Plain Sight Paige Edwards (5/5) How Ms. Edwards was able to pack so much into a novella (exciting plot, great characters, and a budding romance) shows what a masterful story teller she is. Hold onto your seat as Jaclyn Gerard becomes an accidental part of an undercover drug sting. The high speed chase and the boat rescue were my favorite scenes. My heart was beating quickly and I was holding my breath as Cody was racing against time to help Jaclyn.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Covenant Communications and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Three heart pounding stories all in one place. Be ready for a thrill ride filled with suspense.
"Sinister Secrets" is 3 novellas by 3 different authors. All of the stories are quick, easy read with a good bit of suspense and mystery. All of these stories are also very clean reads. My favorite was the first one by Traci Hunter Abramson. I definitely recommend this book.
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The ONLY reason this gets three stars is that Traci Hunter Abramson is amazing at writing.
I cannot say the same for Clair M Paulson. He cannot do descriptive writing at all. Now before you brush me off saying "It's a short story" I have read several of his books (unfortunately) they all read exactly the same. He just skips to the next scene because it's easier than explaining what happened. They only time he describes what happens is through characters saying it. We're talking “Look at this, the door and window are fixed." In the MIDDLE of a serious conversation. That’s the quality of writing we’re dealing with here. When it comes to writing I was always told to show not tell. Paulson only tells.
Want to know what kind of car Ren drives? Don’t worry, Paulson reminds you every single time a car is mentioned—it’s a Charger. Never forget. The other cars in the book? A truck, an SUV, a "small car."
Somehow the PI gets hired within two minutes of starting her interview. And then proceeds to do about a dozen things that would absolutely be illegal. But sure, why not?
And Bob? Goodness. “It’s my office, I’m going in. You stay out.” Pretty sure you don’t get to say that to a cop when there has been a shooting.
Is Ren impressed with the lawyer? Oh, you bet. He mentions it almost as often as he mentions his car.
The criminals are the worst. “Don’t bother looking, we’ll hide her where no one will look.” Why even bother writing that on a note? No real criminal does that.
Oh, and Justin? He just happens to fix the bad guys’ cars and conveniently decides to slap a tracker on it. Sure. Totally believable.
No one knows Lea is a PI… except for, well, literally everyone. She’s apparently amazing and can do everything—except look for cars while on the phone. She can only manage that in between calls.
And we circle back to Ren. He really loves showing off his fists. I have never in my life read a book that mentions “pumping his fists” more than once. (honestly can't even think of one that mentioned it at all)
Paulson' short story was a mess start to finish.
I wish this was just an expanded version of Traci's story. I was actually invested in that. The third one was good but forgetable.
The first story is Secrets of St. Augustine by Traci Hunter Abramson (4 stars). Layla, a young girl has lived at her boarding school with no contact from her only living relative. When she overhears a conversation about her future, she fears for her life and hides in the car of FBI Agent Doug Valdez. Doug is undercover investigating the school and has no idea that she is in his car. The school has no intention of allowing her to escape and a chase ensues as Doug tries to keep her safe along with his wife and daughter. Years ago, Doug rescued his now adopted daughter, Reagan (her story in Twisted Fate) and it looks as if he has another one to save. Very entertaining! The second story is Hunted by Cheri M. Poulson (3 stars). Former Army Ranger Renn Huitt has decided that he would like to pursue a career as a private investigator. He has the skill set and mentor, retired Detective Bob Layman. Bob is receiving death threats and it is up to Renn to help him eliminate the threat before the killer strikes. At the same time, they are investigating, along with a dedicated and attractive young attorney, the case of a homeless woman who has been falsely charged with murder. The last story is In Plain Sight by Paige Edwards (3 stars). School teacher Jaclyn Girard unwittingly becomes involved in FBI Special Agent Cody Ackert’s undercover investigation into a drug cartel. Someone believes that she can identify one of the members of the drug ring and she has become a liability. Can Cody rescue her and expose the informant who has been providing information to the cartel? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
