Foxes Love Sorcerers

Rate this book
Can a sorcerer apprentice learn to control his magic before the elder demon destroys his home?

Fledgling sorcerer Isaac and his friends accidentally create a spell that sets a cryptid town on top of theirs. With no one hurt in the aftermath, they put the night of the Red Storm behind them and opened their arms to the new residents, shifters monsters and everything in between. Caspian, a sweetly sexy fox shifter has turned his considerable affections and attention toward Isaac, making him smitten in return.

Unfortunately, not everyone is welcoming and not everyone is kind. A corrupt mayor and his cronies want to use Isaac for his unique and powerful magic.

With the help of Caspian, his foxy boyfriend, and his mentor, Darius, Isaac discovers that magic can be fun and helpful in the battle to save his town from the grasping hands of an elder demon hellbent on taking over.

Monsters In Love is a small-town series where monsters, humans and others find love and community. This book includes a sweet cinnamon roll fox and his shy sorcerer, found family and small-town charm. There is a happy for now ending but the main couple is together

The premise is pretty good. I expected to love this book, because it just fits so well with what I consider a comfort read. However, I feel like we're missing information. While reading the book, I had moments where I felt like when I got the first book in a sequel series: knowing there was an event the author expected us to know about that I knew nothing of. It comes with constant feeling of confusion, of feeling like something should've been explained at some point but it wasn't, so did I miss something?
I did check and no, this is a new series and this is the first book in it, no prequels even. And we still know very little of the world. What did happen in the red storm? Did the "human" world have an established magic user base? Or were they an oddball group people considered fake until the red storm? Two towns from different dimensions were overlapped by magic, so how did the world react? Or they kept it a secret? Did Isaac actually cause the storm, was he a bystander, or was it a mesh of magic and he got caught within? What are exactly the cryptids? We don't really get an explanation to any of them, or their lore, and if that plays to character stereotypes within the world. What is a guardian, and how is that role assigned? Is demonology a common knowledge thing? And what does Elijah and the headmaster have to do with it? What are exactly the mushrooms, what do they have to do with the storm, and why are two guys raising one?
This book is good, but could totally use a prequel. I have way too many questions that could be answered with one book around the events of the storm and how the town itself operates to understand how the current events are developing in the current point in the timeline, two years after the storm. Even a chapter or two, or some properly placed flashbacks and explanations could've helped smooth out the reading experience. I hope Toshi does answer some of those questions in the next book.

Foxes Love Sorcerers is my very first book by Toshi Drake. I got interested over the story because of the blurb. The premise was actually pretty good. The story follows Isaac and Caspian as they try to deal with the problems and mysteries happening all throughout the town they both love after their two worlds have been merged during what the event they call the Red Storm.

What I really liked about the story is the world where the story takes place, the magic that exists in it and all the fascinating magical creatures that live alongside the humans. Those elements really shine in the story but the other parts feel disjointed and doesn't seem to fit. There are times where some parts are missing some context because nothing was provided. Also, the pacing is rather slow and the journey towards the end was mired with some bits that could've been edited out for better flow.

It was also hard for me to like Isaac. I just can't really like his character and his actions and decisions throughout the story just didn't help his case. The way his friends go from chastising him to over protective mother hen gave me some whiplash at times. Caspian was adorable but his obsession and stalkerish behavior early on was a bit disconcerting. He did slowly get over that bad behavior and in fact got most character growth here.

I did enjoy the book for the most part and though I was left with more questions than answers which I hope the next part provides.

Overall, this was a slow, but decent read.

This would be 3.5 stars out of 5 for me.

I received an ARC of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

ok, this one falls in the category "hard to rate" ... I loved the idea of the story, I loved Caspian - can't wait for Bale and Darius story as this one ends on a cliffhanger ... although I am not sure, whom I want to have as a MCs in the next one.

so, why only 3,5 Stars ... because the flow was just not right, the first half was too long, I could not connect to Isaac at all ... he seemed totally confused all the time. sometimes I had the feeling that the author forgot things, he should already know
But Caspian and Darius made that a whole lot better. loved those two.

so, I am really looking forward to the next book because I want to know how this story develops further!

an ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review

Foxes Love Sorcerers is the first book in a new series. The book follows the story of Isaac and Caspian. The book is filled with magic, magical creatures, and shifters (although they are not called shifters in the book). There seems to be a backstory that is not included in this book and it feels like the reader is playing catch up. The book does have some steam but is more romance and slow burn. Overall a good story, but would have liked some more world-building to understand what is going on. The book does end in a cliffhanger. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I did not vibe with this writing style. I also did not vibe with the main characters. Caspian is bland. Isaac is slightly better but also still boring to me for being the focal character of the book. I actually liked the side characters Darius and Bale better but still not my favorite. Tje story jumped around so much it was hard to follow at times. It felt rushed but yet also to drag on in areas. The story or what I could follow of it seems interesting. The magic system is interesting. The premise is as well but execution wise not my favorite.

I didn’t love this book. I almost didn’t finish it. It was so disorganized and felt like there were too many things I was supposed to know but didn’t. For the first book in a series, I didn’t expect that. Not recommended!

I really enjoy paranormal stories that have a mix of species/abilities within one community. With Foxes Love Sorcerers, the human world has been mixed with the cryptid one after one huge magical event crashed their worlds together.
I found myself struggling to get into this story, though. The world building by the author is quite good and how the current situation is established but then we are just put into this new environment that has been created with little else said about it. When it comes to the main characters, fox shifter, Caspian, and mage, Isaac, I didn't really connect with them or the relationship that develops across the story. There's a bit of back and forth regarding their trust in themselves and each other, plus Isaac is struggling to control his magic and relies a lot on his best friend, Darius, for support, which, at least to start with, is a bit of a sore spot for Caspian. It's a slow burner to start with as Caspian knows with his shifter senses that Isaac is for him but it takes a lot more for Isaac to learn that this attractive man wants him. Once they finally get over hurdles of interference from work and mostly well-intentioned friends, things heat up and share some wonderful moments together. They each have a lot going on regarding their jobs, giving cryptids a comfortable and welcoming home but always facing pushback from certain humans in the community.
There is a lot to take in regarding the multiple possible enemies and figuring out what their final plan is. Trying to grasp that plot had me thinking throughout and getting into that aspect of the story took a while as it's not just an enemy from their home turf that they are fighting but one that deals in strong magic as well. This brings extra stress and tension to Isaac and Darius, especially with the roles they had with the event that brought the worlds together and expanded Isaac's magic to a pretty intense level. There is a constant worry about what some of the people in town are doing behind the scenes, working to raise the humans and push the cryptids down.
Overall, the story and relationship development is okay but something that I had to push through to finish. I am hoping that the next book brings more to the world building and fleshes out the characters that have been in the background a bit more. I am interested to see what happens with the bad guy as well as that is left on a bit of a cliffhanger.

I received an ARC of this book from GRR for an honest review.

Foxes Love Sorcerers is the first book I read by Toshi Drake. I was intrigued by the synopsis of the book. That said, this novel's storyline was pretty entertaining. The story focuses on Isaac and Caspian as they attempt to deal with problems and mysteries happening throughout town since the event that occurred called the Red Storm.

In this book, I enjoyed the setting the author built, from the magic present to the mesmerizing creatures that live alongside the humans. These features stand out in the story; unfortunately, other parts of the story feel disconnected because they don't fit. Some parts were missing crucial context at some points in the book because the author didn't provide enough detail. Additionally, the pacing of this story is slow, and the author added moments that I felt were not needed.

I struggled a bit with the main characters of this book. I didn't hate them, but I disliked them. Isaac's actions and decisions didn't make me like him any better throughout the story. Isaac's friends chastise him for one moment, and then they are overprotective and confusing. Caspian was cute, but his behavior early on was a bit odd. However, Caspian did have some character growth as his lousy behavior eventually waned.

I liked this book despite some things that I mentioned above. There was a good ending. I wish I had received more answers to my questions while I read. This book was a leisure read.

Isaac, an apprentice sorcerer, and his friends somehow created a spell which landed a cryptid (paranormal) village on top of theirs. No one was hurt and they move to try and integrate the two types of residents. Caspian, a fox shifter, is in love with Isaac and sets his sites on him. The two get together and are happy but not everyone wants to welcome them. The mayor and his cronies want Isaac for his magic which is unique and strong. The measures they take to get him to comply get progressively more threatening. Isaac and his friends will need to work together and use all available resources to defeat the mayor and the demon directing him.

Watching Caspian try so hard with Isaac and to have him reciprocate was fun to watch. Isaac had so many problems – controlling, his magic, keeping the mayor at bay, and resisting a demon are just a few. Isaac had help in the form a Caspian and his mentor Darius. The romance was a bit of slow burn but for good reasons. The world was unique and revealed to us slowly and masterfully. I did have some questions about side characters. I felt I was missing something but that did not detract was my enjoyment of the story. I look forward to more in this series.

This book is the first in a paranormal series. The beginning of the book starts with the night two realities merged into one. One is your normal human village while the other is an area with what they called cryptids. The world is one of magic, shifters, fairies and so on. This town is isolated from their various world by a portal and the two groups are learning to live together. At first I found the beginning of the book confusing but it reflected the life of one of the main characters.

Isaac is a poor mage who finds himself full of unexpected power. His goal is to help the two different groups to live together peacefully. However the mayor keeps pushing him to use his magic in ways he is uncomfortable with. The mayor's assistant is Caspian, a fox shifter. Isaac is confused by Caspian. He is very attracted to the fox shifter but he is afraid that Caspian is trying to manipulate him like the mayor. Caspian is very attracted to Isaac and wants to get close to him but Isaac runs every time he gets near. Will Isaac ever give Caspian a chance?

I was really intrigued when I read the blurb to this. This is the first book I've read by this author, but I wasn't disappointed.

When Isaac casts a spell that causes another dimension - one inhabited by various paranormal creatures they call cryptids - to overlay with the modern world of humans, you'd expect chaos to ensue. Surprisingly, it works! The world building blending these two groups is really well done and it was actually fun reading as the two groups deal with their changes - humans learning that paranormals exist and the cryptids learning to navigate modern technology. There's a lot of adventure and interesting character development. The ending is more of a HFN, as it does leave some questions unanswered, but I imagine some of those will be handled in future books. The writing itself was on point and I'm really looking forward to reading more of this world. Definitely an author to watch! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.25 stars

What do you do when the world ends? Well, not so much as “ends” as collides with a parallel world where shifters and unicorns and faeries and mushroom children exist, causing the two worlds — the world of mortals and the world of monsters — to merge into a wonderful new creation. If you’re Isaac, well, you simply do your best. Isaac is a sorcerer with great magic potential and almost no magical control. But he’s a good guy, a nice guy, and he has found his calling as the person who works to find harmony between the cryptids (as the new magical citizens have come to be called) and humans. Finding a home for water fae in a farmer’s pond, or explaining human technology to a magical creature. It’s fulfilling, and it makes him happy.

What an interesting and unique world this story is set in! It is pretty cool. Two different dimensions are crossing on top of each other, melding into one and mixing the human and non human alike. We have shifters, magic, demons and more living side by side. Caspian is a fox shifter and Isaac is a mage trying to learn the depth of his magic. He struggles with his control. Cas is the liaison between human and other, and sometimes these two worlds collide. There is a larger arc that isn’t resolved in this book and we do have a bit of a cliffhanger of sorts but it leads into the next book. I am all in to see where this goes and see what happens to the inhabitants of our small village here. The characters are far from perfect people but it is hard not to fall in love with Caspian. He really does mean well and is intent on loving Isaac.

3.5 stars

I liked the world-building in this book (though I'm hoping it will keep expanding in future books). The first part of the book for me was a bit slow, but it did start to pick-up as the story progressed. I think there is so much that needed to be explained/built-up because this is the first book, that it ended up feeling too long. Isaac honestly confused me a bit, especially with regards to his magic. Caspian was pretty adorable. Some of the other characters were good, and I'm hoping we'll get to see more of them in future books. I'm hoping now that we've gotten the introduction stuff out of the way, we'll see more balance in the next book.

This book has To Be Continued ending (honestly it's very close to a cliff-hanger).

First I have to say that cover is gorgeous. This is not only the start of a series, it’s also a slow burn as well. The author is fleshing out the world and giving you a romance while also building your suspense on the drama. Personally I find that kind of read to be the ones you get lost in the world of. I found the characters to be unique and full of depth, both the human and paranormal ones. The ending is more HFN than HEA because even though the two main characters get together there are still things that need to be resolved and more we need to know about them and others. I can see me reading these as they release and later doing a marathon read of them all. This would make a great tv series or movies. The visuals I got were amazing and I’d love to see them brought to life.

Very enjoyable mm paranormal

I enjoyed this book a lot. It’s a fun slow burn romance between Isaac, a new sorcerer and Caspian who is a fox shifter. There is definitely some angst but the story is not dark. Toshi Drake has done a great job with the mystery part of the story about who is behind everything. I love this idea of a sorcerer accidentally bringing the human and supernatural worlds together and they have to figure out how to live in one world. This does end not so much on a cliffhanger for me but it’s the middle of the overarching story. I actually enjoy having an overall story to series like this where the story isn’t all about one couple but what happens to the whole town and you get to see characters from book to book. Enjoy!

excellent start to a series

I was expecting a cute little paranormal romance when I started this book. Cotton Candy with about as much filling. Imagine my surprise when I got a surprising amount of world building, two protagonists that I could really enjoy, and an actual, credible threat. My delight was only further expanded upon when the author used Cthulu Mythos in this series, used it well and put a delightful little spin on it that would have Lovecraft spinning in his grave. Which if you know about Lovecraft you know why that’s good.

In all, this was a book almost tailor made to my tastes and the author does an excellent job drawing me into the world. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

I believe this is a first book of a series but it felt like I was coming into it in the middle. Isaac is a sorcerer who one day, performing, a spell merged two worlds, one human and one populated with cryptids. Caspian, a fox shifter, is captivated by Isaac and tries to help blend their communities. The storyline seems erratic with past events and people interwoven but not fully explained. Both Isaac and Caspian vacillate about their romance and what to do to stop the Yellow King. I did like the characters but never felt vested in their event line. This book is continued in the next. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

I’ll be honest, this one did take me a bit to get into as the beginning/prologue didn’t quite set up the story up for me. And I didn’t think there was any spark or connection between Caspian and Isaac. But as the story progressed and I got into the authors rhythm, it became a very enjoyable book to read. The story about their courtship is very sweet & funny, because everyone else could see they like each other but they just avoided it…..hehehehe … as well as getting blocked because of other dramas. And then amongst all this, problems start up from outside forces and they, plus their friends, have to resolve it. Very enjoyable book.

This book was definitely a fun read. Isaac and Caspian were super cute, but at times almost too cutesy. Caspian was always trying to bolster Isaac and his magic while Isaac helped Caspian adjust to living in a new town. The supporting cast of characters was engaging and helped build the story. While I enjoyed the story and the characters, at times the writing could be confusing and I felt like I missed something, but upon reread found that nope a certain point was jumped to without lead up. That was ok once I got used to the writing style, and worth it for the fun story of a fox and his sorcerer.

I loved the world of this book! I found it fascinating and intriguing. Isaac accidentally caste a spell that caused a dimension of criptids to meld on top of theirs- with no harm or damage done to either side. I loved the mix of different criptids and mythical beings learning from humans and human technology, and humans suddenly learning that these mythical beings are real and learning about magic. It was fun and unique. This story was an adventure and there's a lot packed in it. I do still have a lot of questions, but there will be a second book so I expect to find answers there. This is the first book I've read by this author. 4 stars.

This is the first book in the Monsters in Love series. This is a magical pnr romance. It takes place between a shifter and a mage. Isaac and Caspian were great MCs. although i think that it could have used a little more world-building I think that there was enough and hopefully there will be more. Issac and Caspian come from two different worlds (literally!), but they were put together because of a spell that went wrong. There were times when I wanted to yell at both of them but they both got their acts together. Caspian was definitely my favorite of the two. Can't wait for more from this world!

This story is a sweet slow burn start to a new series. I loved the vast array of creatures from sorcerers, to fae, demons, shifters, humans more! Everything feels very magical! Isaac and Caspian are very endearing characters. You just have to love them and route for them in their journey of self-discovery and love! I received an ARC and just know this is a continuing series, so the overarching plot is not resolved but our guys do have HFN! Looking forward to more of the fantasy world building and character backgrounds in the next book!

This is the second book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed the first I decided to try this one. I loved how Isaac tries to change the colours of flowers and instead opens up a portal which brings cryptids to their world. This is a slow burn romance between Isaac and his foxy mate Caspian. Loved reading about all the different beings and how they worked together to make this new life work. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Foxes Love Sorcerers is the first in the Monster in Love series. Humans, creatures and crytpids all live alongside each other in this fantastical story!! Loved Isaac and Caspian!!! The premise was really good and kept me hooked! We are left with a sort of happy for now as there is an ongoing story arc. Overall, this was sooo good, I want more! It was really well written, the pacing flowed so good, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily leaving a review from an advanced copy that I received. I have been a huge fan of Lloyd Alexander's tales for decades, and this book, while very much an adult story gave me those same magical vibes. Rory has been sent on a quest that his aunt intends him to fail at but when he encounters Graham and they join forces with other magical creatures, he learns both how to survive in a world he's unprepared for and also how to love. Cannot recommend this to fantasy and romance fans enough.

Isaac, Darius, and their friends somehow changed the world that they live in a few years ago and now, everyone is still adjusting. Caspian is one of the new residents and he is fascinated by Isaac. As these two stumble their way through dating, other forces are at work and things are simmering just under the surface. You'll be shocked at what occurs next.

I found the story enjoyable even after the major confusion I felt during the beginning. It was like a jump in the story without much information on it. The characters were good, Caspian is my favorite. I'm interested in the next book especially with how this one ended and what happens to Darius but not with the "I must have the next one" feeling.
Oh and I do so love the cover of this book.
