Before I Let Go

Rate this book
When Nova Anderson’s long-divorced parents reconcile and her best friend snags a fiancé, the career-focused, serial dater is left lonely and curious about what is missing in her own life.

A methodical Nova sets out on the Let Go and Let Love Challenge, a mission to confront the men on her roster and secure a commitment from one of them. On her journey to commitment, Nova meets Jamison, a nice, yet jaded gentleman who is willing to give dating another try after a tumultuous breakup. This could be a big win for them both, but Nova’s daddy issues, the resurfaced memories of an assault, and a sabotage plot orchestrated by Jamison’s ex stand in their way.

Nova thought she’d conquered the commitment challenge when she met and fell for Jamison, but instead she learns that in order to reach cloud nine, she must first confront the obstacles of the past and let go of the trauma that weighs her down.

A girl. A string of guys. A world of hurt from failed romantic and familial relationships. Such describes the life of Nova Anderson.

On the outside, Nova has it all – a brilliant career, a loving mother and sister, loyal friends, a stunning future, and more. She is not missing a thing or so she thinks until an earthquake, a friend’s engagement, her sister’s sabbatical overseas, and her parent’s repaired relationship cause her to evaluate her life. She realizes that internally, she’s a wreck. She is living a lie. She has a lineup of men she “passes the time with,” but what she truly wants is a fulfilling, committed, loving relationship with one man. But to achieve that, she will have to let go a history of hurts from her past. It’s looking pretty grim and unlikely for Nova until family and friends rally around to help her free herself.

Before I Let Go is chick lit on steroids. While the ending is predictable, many of the obstacles to Nova’s healing and true fulfillment are not. That’s one of the things I liked about this book, the surprises and uncertainties. I also enjoyed the strong Black male characters—Nova’s love interest, Jamison, his best friend, even her father in his reformed days. They are all men worthy of inclusion; deserving of the ink and paper.

There are moments of laugh-out-loud humor mostly delivered by the mothers of the hero and shero. While I personally can’t relate to the lifestyle of the twenty-something-lead character, I did not find the depiction of such superficial or pretentious, a trademark of yesterday’s chick lit.

The only suggestion I would offer is that the story lingered too long in places, mostly in the sections when Nova is cutting loose the dead weight in her life. Other than that, I found the story tightly crafted, engaging and entertaining.

I recommend this book and look forward to reading more titles by this author.

Next Time?

The story was the first book by this author. The tale had an abundance of characters and extra other stuff. The authors writing style was cumbersome for my reading appreciation. I will try another book. Maybe next time.
