A mysterious parcel. An unsolved crime. A spell from beyond the grave.
After returning from her last strange quest, Selkie Moon is more than ready to settle down. So when she receives a parcel from her great grandmother 35 years after her death, opening it seems like such a bad idea.
But curiosity wins and the objects it contains plunge Selkie into long-buried family secrets. Suddenly an old mystery begins to echo with the present and she's wrapped in a spell that won’t let go: frightening visions, deadly encounters and a pull from the past that she can’t ignore. What happened down by the old stone well in 1896 – and why does it matter to Selkie after more than a hundred years? Armed with only her wits and psychic twinges that are hardly reliable, Selkie is drawn into a web of cryptic clues that delve deep into the folklore of Ireland where superstition still weaves a powerful – and fatal – spell.
If you love mysteries with lightning pace, twists and turns you never see coming, quirky clues and a sprinkling of the supernatural, then you’ll love The Third Note.
Join Selkie Moon on a quest that will threaten not only her sanity, but her life.
VIRGINIA KING has lived most of her life in Sydney, but has travelled to many places. Her books blend her love of mystery, travel, psychology and folklore in a fast-paced style.
In the past, Virginia has been a teacher, an unemployed ex-teacher, an audio-book producer, the author of over 50 childrenʼs books, a workshop presenter and an award-winning publisher. These days she’s a full-time writer who paints a bit, living in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney with her husband, three pet alpacas and four chickens.
When Selkie Moon received the parcel from the lawyer’s office, it was seventeen years late. Her great grandmother Bridie had left instructions for Selkie to receive it when she was eighteen but it had been lost among the detritus of the office. She was very tempted not to open it – after all it couldn’t be important, could it, seeing as it was so old?
But open it she did and almost immediately Selkie’s life changed. The various objects the parcel contained thrust Selkie into nightmares and visions of a terrible crime which had been committed around a hundred years prior – one that had never been solved. But Selkie believed she owed it to her great grandmother’s memory to find some answers.
Selkie and her good friend Davina headed from Honolulu to Ireland – Selkie on her mysterious quest and Davina to also find answers from her past. But Ireland’s folklore and superstitions continued to be a presence; Selkie wasn’t welcome. She was shocked at the animosity she felt – and had no idea of the danger she faced; both from the past and from the current day. As the mystery deepened, she wondered if her psychic ability would help her find the answers she sought – or if this would be the end?
The Third Note by Aussie author Virginia King is the third in the Selkie Moon series, and wow! what a ripper of a story. I absolutely loved this episode and think The Third Note might be the author’s best yet! Selkie is a great character and while there’s mention of her sister and step-mother in Australia, and her friends from the previous books, this one takes a new direction with Ireland the main focus. Fabulous! (This is also a series that needs to be read in order, in my opinion. The back story is important) I have no hesitation in recommending The Third Note (and the series) highly.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.
The Third Note by Virginia King picks up where The Second Path, Book II, left off. I highly recommend reading this series in order.
A package arrives from Selkie’s long dead grandmother. It was supposed to be delivered on her eighteenth birthday, but it was seventeen years late. Stella, her step mother begs her not to open it and it just makes Selkie more curious about what’s inside. I knowsecrets have been kept and I want her to find them out.
“What if you could heal the past?” That is what Selkie has been trying to do since her move to Hawaii.
Soooooo, it’s off to Ireland with Davina, who believes Selkie is a psychic detective. They both have pasts that will confront while there. She’s on a mission to discover what happened to her twin relatives. Supposedly, one was murdered and the other sent away.
Psychic visions, myths and legends, fairies, ghosts, magic, superstitions, secrets, and Selkie is determined to unveil them.
The Third Note is heavy on the mystery and the suspense is subtle, yet there are urgent and dangerous moments as Selkie and Davina visit their roots in Ireland. So many pieces to the puzzle, it took Selkie spelling it out for me, piece by piece, to see how the puzzle came together. The romance is sweet and develops over time.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of the Third Note by Virginia King.
The Third Note By Virginia King Continues To Captivate With Her Spellbinding Characters!
Faced with only a parcel, delivered 17 years after it's intended delivery and the eerie thoughts that continue to come to the forefront of her mind, Selkie Moon is again pulled, not quite willingly, into a search of a century-old mystery! Compelled to find answers Selkie needs to learn more about her family, what transpired on a dark cold night so many decades ago that is compelling her to find the answers.
Selkie's own amazing blend of humour at times has me laughing, her amazing descriptions of the places she visits leaves me enthralled and the character development just continues to be such an integral part for me as a reader.
And The Mysteries Keep Coming! At times I'm so completely immersed in the incredible amount of information that Virginia King is able to incorporate into her novels. The brilliance of the magical, mystical and folklore further entice me to keep turning the pages!
Definitely a read for those who love mystery/thrillers and the unusual!
I was gifted a copy to read and review as part of Virginia's team of advanced readers. I encourage everyone to sign up for Virginia King's newsletter, an excellent way to continue to journey with Selkie and enjoy current information on the next installment in the Selkie Moon series!
Selkie receives a parcel from her grandmother 35 years after her death. She digs into long buried secrets. Murder and visions that help to reveal what occurred. A sister killed with a necklace sent to Selkie. Will the visions help to solve a murder?
Leaving Birds – A companion to Laying Ghosts consisting of four different stories, of which one is a true event. An interesting note is how these four items were the sparks of a fire known as Laying Ghosts. These were well written, intriguing stories; all different. The author did a wonderful job with Peig’s Place. I would recommend reading this after reading Laying Ghosts, The First Lie, The Second Path and The Third Note. I received this after reading the above listed books. 4*
Laying Ghosts – The beginning of the story repulsed me, but I hung in there and ending up liking the short story. The text gave me a heads up and I figured out the ending. Well-written, repulsive and good characters, good ending to the story for a worthy character. 4*
The First Lie – A well written, intriguing, paranormal suspense with believable and quirky characters and a rich plot that draw you in and you can't put the book down. This book picks up where Laying Ghosts ended; the main character starting her new life in a new country. There's a prologue, which I appreciate and a glossary of Hawaiian words. Laying Ghosts is a must read before First Lie; a good foundation short story. 5*
The Second Path – This is a wonderfully intriguing, suspense filled sequel to The First Lie and Laying Ghosts. It was hard to put the book down, so when real life called I couldn't wait to start reading again. I savored the complex story, taking longer to read it then I usually do with good books. The reader is mesmerized by the flowing, surprised filled plot. The original characters keep growing in their development as the pages flow past. There are some wonderful new characters that make the story more magical and their friendship and guidance help Selkie discover the meaning of her quest.
Included after TSP is a glossary of Hawaiian terms and the short story Laying Ghosts. This short should be read before TSP and The First Lie, it lays a foundation that the other stories build upon. 5*
The Third Note – Another well written, complex novel that’s full of intrigue and suspense. Selkie continues to grow and develop her talents, with the help of her great-grandmother. The complex plot keeps the reader on edge and the components make a well blended mix to keep the reader mesmerized. The characters are realistic and don’t follow the usual stupid formula, and Ms. King’s descriptions paint vivid pictures as the scenes unfold.
For some reason, the Epilogue is separate from TTN, but has a link at the end of the story to obtain it from Bookfunnel. There’s a glossary of various terms. I look forward to reading more of Ms. King’s books; she’s doesn’t disappoint the reader. The Epilogue to The Third Note is very short, but entertaining and clears the air between some of the people who threatened Selkie throughout the story. 5*
On The Spooky Trail: Travels in Supernatural Wales – A very short read containing a few snippets of places of the supernatural stories of Wales. The reader will probably be disappointed in this brief, simplistic read after reading her other books. The snippets aren’t complex, just informative – like a casual conversation. There are three photographs that along with the snips fill 61 percent of this book; the rest is peeks into her other books and a free offering of Laying Ghosts. It’s entertaining enough for a coffee break. 3*
*I received a free copy of this book, with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
This, the third in the series, is my favourite Selkie Moon mystery yet.
The plot does stand alone, but I generally recommend reading this series in order as there is a wealth of detail in the character development that really enriches each shorter story arc.
Selkie is more confident in her talents and relationships in this outing than she has been in the previous books, and the result is a more adventurous, less hesitant protagonist. The turmoil is more focused on the events and situations Selkie finds herself in, rather than the spiralling pit of self doubt she has fallen into in the past.
We do dive more into Selkie’s past here; but whereas The Second Path explored Selkie’s recent family history, The Third Note delves further back into her ancestry. Unsurprisingly, murder and visions both feature – past and present.
As usual, the story is packed with puzzles, cryptic clues and symbolism for the reader to enjoy solving before, or along with, the characters. I found these elements were less densely packed than in the earlier books, which gave the story a smoother flow and mirrored Selkie’s clear mind and renewed focus.
I particularly loved the way clues and plot points were mirrored between past and present, and also between the two present-day storylines, creating an intricate symmetry that is very pleasing to an orderly-minded reader.
I’m glad that Selkie is growing into herself and starting to find more of a balance in her life and am looking forward to seeing where she travels next.
It’s not the first time Davina’s called me a detective – a spiritual detective, responsible for delving into the mysteries of the soul. It’s a role that’s clear to her and a total mystery to me, even after my other escapades and insights. It’s as if each time something amazing happens, I gain a higher understanding, then in a flash I turn back into ordinary Selkie. I remember the insights but they haven’t transformed me into a mystic. “You’re just saying that,” I tell her, “because you want to drag me off to Ireland on another psychic goose chase.”
Purchase This is the kind of book that you don't want to end, yet you still want to know what happens. I think I enjoyed 'The Third Note' the most out of the series, although some of that may be down to British familiarity with the setting. A mystery parcel arrives from Selkie's dead Great-Grandmother which sends her on a mystery quest to Ireland, where there is an abundance of folklore, written about beautifully in this book, nice touch with the two characters Mickey and Finn. At the same time, one of Selkie's best friends has her own mystery to solve so the storyline gets intertwined, and then out again. And don't forget there is a love interest thread going on, can she trust him.? You'll be willing her to trust him but she keeps having dreams and being all psychic! The Third Note really drags the reader in, this series is so addictive, gets you questioning was that a coincidence? No, was it? I can't help thinking there is an army of grown up Harry Potter fans who would love to read this series - a compliment.
After receiving a package from her great-grandmother, Selkie finds herself winging her way to Ireland to try and solve a 100 year old murder. This time however she is not travelling alone, as her good friend Davina is returning to Ireland to lay her own ghosts to rest. While Selkie's quest intensifies, so does the undercurrent of Davina's issues to the point where I am concerned for the safety of them both. The Third Note is a seamless blending of mystery, psychic phenomena and folklore. If these genres, coupled with believable and relatable characters and page turning events are your idea of excellent reading, then the Selkie Moon series was written for you. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
This book is part of The Selkie Moon Mystery Series Box Set purchased on 21.08.2021
The third part of the Selkie Moon mystery and maybe my favorite so far. This part has it all: Selkie receives a parcel from her great grandmother Bridie and with it she begins another journey to reveal a one hundred years old murder mystery. This time her intuition and Davina's past leads them to Ireland where the friends bond seems to go further than their recent friendship. A thriller with the folk and mystic flavor. An amazing book that will get you totally hooked to solve the puzzle and understand the ballad. We got a glimpse of another ballad in the Leaving Birds Book. Thanks Virginia King for providing a copy of this amazing book to review. I am torn between the urge to follow Selkie's journey to the end and the sorrow to part with Selkie when her journey ends.
The Third Note is truly magical. Full of mystery, Irish folklore, and family history, the story of Selkie Moon continues. This is probably my favorite of the three, as the characters have developed more, we find out more about Selkie's past and her "abilities", and Selkie finds out more about herself. All of the Selkies' fun and quirky friends from the first two books are there; Davina, Derek, Coral and of course her romantic interest, Alister. If you are love mysteries with a paranormal flavor, you will love the Selkie Moon books.
I can't believe how these books just keep getting better! I was so wrapped up in this with twins and sisters coming out of the woodwork. Who is friend and who is foe? Are they both? So many twists and turns as Selkie heads to Ireland with Davina. The tale is woven amongst the present, Selkie's great grandmother's childhood, and Davina's childhood. Every thing is connected and nothing is as it seems. So much going on! Irish folklore, a little supernatural, some romance, a fantastic mystery....just couldn't put it down! I am impatiently waiting for the next book! Write faster Ms. King!!
The Third Note is the third book in the Secrets of Selkie Moon series by Virginia King.
Selkie receives a long overdue package from her great grandmother. This starts her down a path where she learns more about her family’s past. She and her friend Davina head off to Ireland to investigate their pasts.
Selkie’s relationship with Alister progresses as he continues seeking out his son.
I can’t wait to see where Selkie’s next journey takes her.
I received this book as a gift and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
After receiving a mysterious gift from her grandmother that she never met, Selkie goes in search of answers. Another very interesting and mysterious adventure. Love the descriptions of the places she visits and the Irish Folklore. I enjoy going along with her on these adventures. Can't wait to see what happens next.
I really enjoyed this book. It was like being on a roller coaster it was heart racing one moment then very calm the next. If you want to read an enjoyable book. You really should read this book. You absolutely will not regret the decision to read this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and volunteered to write this review. It is 1st Rate…..I picked it up and could not stop reading until it was finished, something I rarely do…..it is a great tale and Ireland lends itself perfectly to this sort of intriguing plot…..so I say ‘Well Done Virginia King’ and thank you for a great read.
I'm so glad I stumbled across Virginia King's writing just after she completed her first novel. She's a brilliant writer who tells fascinating stories. Having read all her other books (double-fast and over and over to make sure I hadn't missed anything!) I couldn't wait to read her latest mystery. The Third Note is all I hoped (well, knew, really) it would be. As it romps from Hawaii to Ireland, land of mists and mystery, layer is added to layer until the truth of an ancient crime is laid bare. Fascinating stuff. I could hardly bear to put it down. Well done, Virginia! Keep them coming!
"There’s a pattern here—the losing and the finding take me on incredible journeys of discovery. Things I need to know about myself. It’s what happened when I lost my memory and had to travel across the world to get it back. I mustn’t forget what I discovered then: that the answers are in my own heart."
Virginia King weaves a mystical web of suspense, psychic intuition and self-discovery in The Third Note. With Selkie now attempting to settle in Hawaii, her great-grandmother Bridie’s much delayed parcel comes as a huge surprise to her. Why did Bridie wait until 35 years after her death to send it to her, and what is the significance of her mysterious gift? While Selkie knows that Bridie was Irish, she doesn’t know why she left Ireland nor why she chose Selkie as the recipient.
When Selkie meets up with her old friend Davina, she asks Selkie to accompany her on a trip to Ireland—Davina’s birthplace. Davina has secrets of her own which need investigating. Selkie figures it’s the perfect opportunity to do some research into her own family history. What she finds will both shock her and have far reaching repercussions.
Exploring the idea that our past affects our present far more than we realise, The Third Note is a chilling, yet thoughtful, page turner with a good dose of humour thrown in to lighten things up.
If you enjoyed the first two books in the Selkie Moon Mystery series, then you’ll love The Third Note. In fact, even if you didn’t read the first two books in the series, chances are you’ll be fascinated enough by book 3 that you’ll want to go back and read them too. Oh yes, and, did I mention there’s a free prequel available on Amazon too?
Wow I just finished reading The Third Note, and what an adventure it was, full of folklore and old family secrets for Selkie to investigate. I found this book very eerie, mystical and emotional in many ways. However, this story is also intriguing with lots of twist and turns throughout that kept me reading until the very end.
The story itself follow Selkie Moon as she gets send a long lost package from her great grandmother 35 years after her death, that holds a family secret from the past. She feels she has to find the truth in the hopes she can lay the past to rest for all who are connected. So Selkie and her friend Davina who is on a journey of discovery herself set off on a trip for the truth. Will Selkie discover the true message that the sender want her to know? Will her friend Davina find what she’s looking for while on their journey? You must read this book to find out.
I found the fairies folklore and the fear about fairy ring fascinating especially the way the author Virginia linked this to the story and how this also created an eerie and emotional part of the story in the characters it surrounded. I also love the supernatural feel to this book in some places the story really does make you feel cold, sad, happy all at once.
I would highly recommend this book if you love folklore and the supernatural along with a journey packed with mystery and great characters to follow with an ending that won’t disappoint. I’d Also recommend other books in the Selkie Moon series. This is yet another phase in Selkie’s journey. Readers should check this book out.
