A philandering surgeon plans a suicide that ultimately results in the death of another woman.

The surgeon becomes obsessed with this dead woman; devoting endless hours of his time to determining why the mystery woman threw herself in front of his car.

Perhaps it was this book's premise that I had a difficult time embracing.

The surgeon was a very busy man. He had a wife, a lover, children, friends, and patients who depended on him.

With all this going on....I was just not "getting" his fixation on finding out EVERYTHING about a dead woman.

This was an Audible Plus freebie and the narration was superb. Not enough to save this book, though.

Pauly is driving to an isolated spot, intending to die by suicide. As he nears his final moments someone else's tragedy prevents him from carrying through with his plan. The story had intriguing twists - especially in the earlier chapters - with a great premise, a strong opening scene and some colourful and well-drawn characters. I thought one of the more compelling aspects was an exploration of the layers of long-standing guilt and sense of powerlessness that have driven a successful surgeon and family man to the brink. Will he find the courage to do the right thing, this time?
I listened to this on Audible, though my rating is for the story, not the narration. The narrator did a fine job - except that I do wish male narrators would find a way to read female voices without making every woman in the story sound like a complete ninny.

The first half of this is rough because Paulie was so unlikable. You wanted to feel for him because of the situation, but it was hard because he was just awful. At one point, he was talking about his wife straightening her hair to curl it. Shut up, Paulie lol he just picks her apart. Even if she is annoying, I hate that.

But in the second part he gets better. He's growing as a person, and also the mystery heats up and gets exciting. So it was definitely worth a listen and the narration was fantastic.

The premise sounded cool, but the execution wasn’t good. It’s about a man (the main character), who is really depressed and attempted to commit suicide by driving off a cliff. That is not a spoiler, because it happens in the very first chapter. When he attempted to commit suicide, a woman ran out in front of his car on purpose and she died instead. The book is supposed to follow him trying to figure out why she would do that, what happened to her, and how he is connected to her. The mystery was so boring and it didn’t really start to get into what could have possibly happened until close to the end. The majority of the story follows the main character and his terrible lifestyle, cheating on his wife, doing drugs, hating his job. It really is a depressing book to read. I didn’t enjoy it. That’s why I only gave it 2 stars.

DNF at 80%. So why stop when you’re almost to the finish line? Because I don’t care. Every character in this is unlikable and unsympathetic. I can deal with that - I have read many books with disposable characters. But throw in a meandering and boring story where you just repeat the same, slightly altered inner monologue. Yawn. It’s just a pass - I have no interest in how this story ends.

Not sure this is a book I would’ve chosen if I had to pay for it, but since it was a free listen with my Audible subscription, I gave it a shot. Despite the subject matter, I enjoyed the storyline. I think it was a somewhat honest portrayal of how life can take hold and take you down if you let it. It is certainly a good portrayal of how our choices have consequences. It had some mystery/twists. If you are triggered by stories depicting suicide, do not read/listen.

DNF @ chapter 36. Premise was great at the beginning but it was just dragging on forever and I realized I didn’t care how it ended.

A successful surgeon with a happy family, Paulie is depressed and he decides to unalive himself, but a woman jumps in front of his car, she dies and Paulie lives. Then Paulie spends the majority of the book telling us how depressed he is, and what kind of a woman his wife is, and what kind of a woman his mistress is and who his coworkers are.

It almost out me to sleep. The pacing was so off for me. Given that this is supposed to a thriller, I was expecting something much more fast-paced and much more exciting. Certainly not this.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Paulie became obssesed with the woman he (essentially) killed, but how, I am not sure. I mean, he had a pretty busy life already, how did he find the time to become obssesed with literally, anything? He began investigating, learned the woman was a dancer, and she had a side hustle at a strip club. Then it is revealed that she was involved in selling drugs. And finally, it was revealed that one of Paulise's doctor friends was involved in the same drugs operation, and as if it isn't enough, Pauile's daughter Eve is one of the dealers of the same operation.

That is it. This book is supposed to be on the shorter side, and it was, but I felt like there were so many boring moments that didn't need to be in the book? This could have been even shorter if those parts were cut, is what I am trying to say I guess.

This book contained every element that makes a book bad.... The storyline was all over the place, plus outrageous, the twist was overblown and boring and the story just didn't make sense... The first few chapters I admit were a bit captivating, so page after painful page, I was in hopes of the story picking back up .. this was a 1 star without a doubt... Have an extra star for the start of the book.

The pacing of the story was good; I wasn’t quite sure what the outcome and the connections between the characters would be, so the ending had some element of surprise. This was a 3.5 overall for me.

This was a surprisingly good book. It kept me wanting to listen to hear what happens. A twist of faith with one man’s choice and how it unravels. The narration was excellent.

I prefer to review right after finishing a book while everything is still fresh, but I couldn't with this one, because it didn't have an entry here yet.
So here goes. It was fine but forgettable.
The protagonist wasn't a great guy, but the author did well in portraying his growing obsession and need to understand what happened, and his existential crisis which started the ball rolling.
The solution was all a bit too tidy. As it says in the blurb, he discovers a link that is very close to home. Except that's putting it mildly. It is all so improbable. And wow, how stupid was the protagonist to not see the extremely obvious connections right away? Oh, wait, because he'd been mentally AWOL from his family and their lives because he's having an affair. But ugh. Had he paid even a little attention to what his kid was up to- literally her one extracurricular activity- he'd have figured things out in days rather than months. Kind of unbelievable.
It was fine. It started out pretty well, even. Kept my attention, and it was entertaining enough, but the case ended up being very straightforward and not terribly interesting or inventive.
The ending was a little on the nose, but still kind of nice- it mirrors the beginning neatly.

Upside: this was a free Audible listen and the narrator had a good voice.

I really enjoyed this audible, the narrative was excellent definitely a performance rather than a reading which is always perfect.
The story sets as Pauly a surgeon plans a suicide which ultimately results in someone else’s death. Pauly finds a new lease of life or rather a new purpose for life, he is desperately trying to find out what made Zoe throw herself in front of the car he was planning to wrap around a tree.
I don’t like to give too many spoilers to ruin the story for other readers/listeners. However this is a book well worth reading. It takes many twists and turns, the characters are believable and the murky world Pauly finds himself involved in is well written and researched. Contains trigger warnings of suicide, underage sex, sexual assault and drug use/trafficking. A gripping thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed, and with a fantastic ending.

3.5 ⭐️ Lots of exposition and dragging parts, but I think the last 80% made up for it (plus it helped to speed up the audio a bit too). I ended up rooting for the main characters. Satisfying wrap up. Great read about mental health, too. Please take note of TW // suicide

I'm torn with this one. It's another novel that had good aspects, but it had just as many bad ones as well. The things I hated balanced out the things I liked perfectly, so I found three stars to be appropriate. There will be a few general spoilers, but nothing so severe that it will ruin the story for you if you want to read it yourself.

What I liked:

1. The idea behind the story. I thought it was unique how the MC was planning to kill himself, but the plan came to a halt when he killed someone else by accident. Interesting premise.

2. Despite his flaws, I did like Pauly. While I didn't like how spineless he was for most of the novel, I did like how he knew he was wrong and how, at the end, he made up for it in multiple ways.

3. I liked how he figured out the mystery using other characters who were all unique themselves, such as the deceased woman's husband and the journalist. He wasn't a detective, but he became one simply because he was incredibly smart. Seeing as how he was a surgeon, his brains made complete sense.

4. I loved the last chapter because it was believable. It didn't have a "happily ever after" feeling, but it was still positive. I like when novels can do this.

What I didn't like:

1. I HATED the name Pauly. I don't know why. I don't mind the name Paul, but the MC being named Pauly made me cringe. I kept picturing a young child instead of a full-grown man and it just wasn't working for me.

2. Most of the characters were oddly annoying, though I don't know how to explain it. Pauly's wife was frustrating, but she didn't do anything super specific to truly be hated. The same goes for some of his coworkers. Now, some of these characters were meant to be hated by the end, but before these characters were revealed as antagonists, I just disliked them because they rubbed me the wrong way; I didn't dislike them knowing they were scumbags.

3. I inwardly groaned when the ending was revealed. What was the issue?! You'll never guess it! Ready for the reveal? It involved...! *drumroll* HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND DRUGS!!! Just like a million other novels out there. Ugh.

4. Not counting the human trafficking part of this novel (which was meant for the ending), there was an odd and almost misplaced amount of sexual scenes within the story. Pauly sees someone getting assaulted on the beach as a teenager...he sees someone getting assaulted by a doctor in the hospital...and he doesn't do anything. Yes, this involves his character arc, but I feel like these things could have been shown in a different format at times rather than always aiming towards sexual assault. It made me uncomfortable at times.

Was it a good novel? I guess so. Was it something I could scream to the heavens about as the best novel I've read all year? Absolutely not. Give it a try if you're interested, but don't feel obligated. You won't be missing out on anything special if you skip it.

Glad He Isn't My Surgeon
What happens when you listen to an audiobook that's basically a character study about a character you just don't care about?

When we meet the main character, Paul, he's a surgeon who has decided the world would be better off without him. I won't say he's right, because suicide is never the answer. But based on what we learn he hasn't exactly been a shining example of humanity, even if he is a doctor. He's not a monster. He's just not really a stand-up guy, preferring to go through life riding the current. A telling example of his lackadaisical view is when he's told in medical school that he should develop his own bedside manner. He decided he would rather look around and copy someone else's.

After Paul accidentally ends one life, but not his own, he sets out to find information about the woman he killed and why she would attempt suicide. Really? He was in the process of attempting to end his life at the time. Why is this a mystery to him? What follows is a bizarre bit of manic craziness that leads to mystery upon mystery. All while he hides everything from his wife of several decades, reminding me that so many of our crises in life can be avoided or at least lessened by communication with those we love. *sigh*

I should have just ended my trauma and cut this one loose. It obviously wasn't for me. But hope springs eternal, and I kept counting on Paul's redemption, so I stuck around. While this novel didn't light me up, someone likes it, because it's gotten good reviews. That's awesome. Enjoy.

This book had good ideas, but the execution and final product just didn’t live up the potential of the ideas. It wasn’t gripping, memorable, or even really enjoyable. It was an okay story, a free Audible listen, and another suspenseful mystery that I now know the ending of, but it isn’t one I’d recommend.

I feel like the more the story played out, the more detached and uninterested I became. The characterization felt under-developed and inconsistent as well, and I’ve realized I look a lot to that for how well I usually enjoy a book. The connection between the dancers, the hospital, and the overlapping relationships throughout made me question the plausibility. I also felt like my focus was being pulled in different directions, and I never knew what to actually focus on- the drugs being stolen from the hospital, the affair or the marriage, figuring out the story behind the woman who committed suicide, the father/daughter relationship, the sexual assault at the hospital, and so many other dynamics. It felt like so many details were unnecessary, and so many conflicts were presented without resolutions. This just didn’t live up to the fast-paced thriller I expected it to be. It drug on and in the end, I was just glad it was over versus being excited or happy that I had a resolution.

Pauly is an anxious, irritating, down-trodden surgeon who is so depressed and done with life that he's about to commit suicide. He has no relationship w/his wife or daughters so pretty sure they'll be better off w/out him. Instead, a beautiful ballet dancer uses his front bumper to commit her own suicide and he becomes obsessed w/finding out why SHE wanted to die. The mystery changes his life, his behavior, and shines light on all the things he just wasn't seeing.
Many many unlikeable people surround this guy, and he's not a sterling character of strength and love. But he's very very human, which made me understand him, even while wanting to shake him.
Some of the character behavior is inconsistent though, so I that affected my rating.
Pretty good story, though a bit too much coincidence. Might have been a little more believable if the setting appeared to be a smaller community, rather than what sounds like a city.
I really enjoyed it. Definitely worth the read. Glad it isn't all sunshine, roses and HEA.

It took a while for this story to heat up.
A doctor, discontented with hisp dual life of married man with wife and two daughters, and a mistress who satisfies his sexual needs with her tanned skin and lithe body, leaves a suicide note and goes for a ride in the middle of the night to kill himself. But before he can do it, a woman bursts out of nowhere, so suddenly that he can’t brake in time so the collision results in her death. The police are called but Paulie is in the clear except his conscience bothers him enough that he is compelled to attend her funeral. He feels especially bad for the dead woman’s husband and two young sons. He is so tortured that he arrives at the husband’s house and admits he was the driver who accidentally killed his wife. The two team up to find out why she committed suicide by running in front of an oncoming car. This is where the reader has to really suspend belief. This unlikely duo partners with a journalist from an underground newspaper and unearth why a dance teacher would want to kill herself.

Farfetched-

Long, monotone for the vast majority both in voice characterization as well as in storyline, and the book simply had no positive redeeming values or qualities that can overcome the blahness to convince me to recommend someone to pick this book over the thousands of other options available.

The storyline itself was farfetched from the start & increased more so when the author attempted to tie some pieces together. Then, by adding 3 characters that he became obsessed with it was over the top for me. The last straw was the ending which was supposed to wrap it all up and make everything easy to understand but did the exact opposite for me. Again, 2 characters already the main character knew were back and involved. When you have a main character and they only know a limited number of people, giving all the characters basically double identities isn't the solution. Again, too far reaching for me.

Not recommend.
