Gilded Knights #4

Pure Chemistry

Rate this book
I’ve never wished for a knight in shining armor before, but today might be the day I let go of that pigheadedness and accept a little help.

I’m a biochemist with a dream to cure cancer, but in my quest to save lives, I may be the reason thousands die.

My candy cane scented drug brings pain relief to the sick, and energy to those still fighting the devastating disease, but with a dangerous cartel getting their hands on my recipe, I may lose everything I love when the youth of my city begin dropping dead within hours of ingesting the new party drug being handed out in clubs.

I want to fix the problem I created, but with all my downtime hogged by the tall, dark, and dangerous Corey Rosa, and a deadly army of foot soldiers tracking me down to fix the recipe they messed up, I might have run out of time.

I’m not done spending time with Corey yet, but the choice may be taken out of our hands before either of us are ready to say goodbye.

Chemistry

Let me start by saying Emilia Finn is one of a few authors I read without even checking the blurb. This was hard for me. To explain the 2 stars beware of spoilers. I love the story but was disgusted by the female lead. Maybe it's because I am raising 3 amazing boys but... I didn't find her to be a strong, independent woman. Jen was selfish, childish and at times almost abusive to Corey. Weather a woman is married, in a commeted relationship or just out for a good time , she absolutely has the right to not have set if she doesn't want to. Having said that, a woman who stripes infant of a man, climbes into bed with him and constantly starts sexual situations knowing she has no intention of having sex with a guy just to jerk his chain is wrong. Especially when she's only doing it because she can. I've seen multiple people describe the shower seen as sexy....it's not. If a man had invaded a woman's privacy in that way people would demand the police be called, and rightfully so. My 21 year old son had a girlfriend like this and the trauma is horrendous. I raised him to be a good man and he was taken advantage of in the name of feminism. Women like this are part of why it's hard to find good men today. Women like this give true feminists a bad name.

A slow burn romance with lots of repetitive steamy scenes ending with the H/h's mutual frustration in the first few chapters. I found this a bit boring, so I admit I put the book down for a few weeks, then picked it up this week, happy to discover the story morphed into intrigue, action and suspense - which I love in romances. I was immediately a fan again.

There are lots of steamy sex scenes, ongoing side characters/friends that star in previous books and many family members. An enjoyable read and I'm slowly working through this Aussie author's back list. It's probably best to read most of her books in the order they were written, as the characters all intermingle and there could be spoilers for previous relationships and plots. This book stands alone re the romance and the general plot. No cliffhanger.

Emilia Finn knows how to create characters you fall in love and dream of finding people just like that to be in your own real life.

Didn't like the main female character much

Jennifer is a manipulative tease, a brilliant scientist with a totally illogical objection to Corey, and her histrionics are exhausting. The author keeps her from being completely unsympathetic by giving her an extreme fear of flying and explaining her behavior as being a result of ADHD, but I would never want to spend any time with someone like her. She is my least favorite of Finn's heroines, but I did like how she contributed to her own rescue.

Normally I really enjoy Emilia Finn’s books. This one was a miss for me. Maybe it was my mood but Jen was not a character I remotely liked. I found much of her banter annoying and immature. Corey was much the same. I feel like I was suppose to find Jen bold and independent but her actions didn’t show that. Corey was reactionary to Jen’s mood/actions so I didn’t really get a great idea of who he was as a character.

I liked this book. I loved Corey, but Jen .... I find her so annoying at some point. She is too much! She's a bad tease, spoiled, and not that independent as she likes to appear/be. Anyway, I can't say I didn't like it, but just for Corey and the other characters from the previous books.

2.5 Star Rating - I was blinded by my love of the Rosa Family and rounded up to a three.

I borrowed this book on March 16, 2022 from Kindle Unlimited. I just finished it today, May 22, 2022.

Now, let me explain what happened:

This book was initially released sometime in March, which is when I originally downloaded it. No problem, I start to read it. I am not hoping for much, because I have been severely disappointed in the Gilded Knights. The Rosas are my favorite, and I just feels like they haven't been given their time to shine. They're codependent on one another, but we haven't seen much of their crazy antics. Where are the brothers that blew up Abby's phone? They're missing in action. It's almost like Emilia didn't love them as much as we did and ran out of ideas for RollerTown.

Anyway, I start reading. I start hating Jennifer's character. Corey isn't exciting me either, and the repetition makes my eyes roll. I get to around the 70 percent mark, and I have had enough. This was the first book (I started with the Checkmate series) of Emilia's that I thought I was going to DNF. It made me sad because even when I don't agree with her plots, or I think it should have gone a different way, they always loop me back in with a powerhouse ending. I just couldn't see that happening. I ending up putting it down to read something else with every intention of coming back. It took me two months to drum up enough interest to pick it up again.

I believe the main reason I severely disliked this book was because of Jennifer. I didn't have a problem with her when she was introduced in Animal Instincts. In fact, I thought she was eccentric in a fun, lovable, but very out there type of way. However, the further I read into Pure Chemistry, the more I wanted her to disappear forever. It's okay to be independent. It's okay to do own your thing. It's not okay to provoke a situation over and over until you get the end result you think you want. When you decide it's not the right answer you were looking for, you provoke again. The cycle then continues over and over again with no new result. You can't poke the dog, and then be mad when it bites you. Now, take this analogy and fill a book full of the same type of situations. The end.

so much tension

What happens when your brother marries the woman of his dreams, and her sister is yours? You fight your feelings, and don’t act on them. Corey and Jen have so much chemistry and tension that this flirting is even 🥵. This book I put under friends to lovers because they attempt to keep each other in the friend-zone initially, out of respect for their family. Per Jen, it would just make family situation awkward down the line when they both move on.

These two couldn’t move on, and when their professional lives crossed with their personal lives, lines are blurred and feelings grow. When love is in the mix, there is no caring about the rest of the family. This book is one of the few where the two fall in love, before $ex or even dating!!! While it made for an insanely slow burn, it definitely shows their strong connection as well. 🥰

Jen is very independent and loves her life, until her job begins to not suffice. Her professional moral code is compromised and even more when she finds out what it is that Corey really does. She hates the feelings she has for him, especially with his career choice. Corey has always been one of the 5 Rosa brother to kept more to himself. We find out why, when his life crosses with Checkmate.

This whole book have major Checkmate vibes and I LOVED it!!!! I have a feeling book 5 for Troy will give us the same feelings….. and I need it now! This book can be read as a stand-alone, but has three other brothers to read before to enjoy Corey and Jen best.

Cory Rosa 😍😍

First, in general I REALLY loved this book! They did have amazing chemistry, and I like that it stretches out over time and gives their feelings time to grow instead of being insta-love. I’m going to talk about some problems below but to be clear, they only took it from a 5 to a 4 and this is my favorite book since Iowa’s book (Stacked Deck #4).

Ok, so I really hate to say this because this is my favorite author…the heroines are getting bitchier and bitchier. This was probably one of the less bitchy of the bunch, but she did do some really shitty stuff to Corey, and then totally dismissed his feelings about that and just kept on bitching at him. She even bitched about the fact the she fell in love with him. It literally broke my heart for him. I feel like they’re supposed to come across as take charge feminist, but too often lately they’re just coming across as spoiled, entitled bitches.

Also, side rant: Sophia is the new Kit. I loved Sophia and Kit in their own books, yet somehow in every book after they get “stronger” (bitchier) in every subsequent book. I miss when they actually seemed like real women. Kit finally got back on track in the Stacked Deck series so I’m really hoping Soph gets more realistic soon.

I have a reading goal of reading all of Emilia Finn’s books in order and stay committed to each series. I usually get bored or frustrated and have to move on to other series/authors. I am at that stage right now. I have found that when I get frustrated with one of the books in these series it has always been with the FMC. She writes amazing MMCs but some of the FMCs are not.
I really looked forward to this book because I loved Jen in Tabby’s book. However, Jen in this book was horrible. I didn’t care for her at all. Not even by the end. She was a brilliant scientist but so dumb. She was mean to Corey and lead him on. Telling him yes she wanted to sleep with him but no they couldn’t and even if she says yes it still is a no. ????? That’s horrible to do or say to a guy. Corey saves her after she is drugged and almost assaulted and she never even thanks him. She even meanly states something like “you want me to thank you?” She goes out to buy the street drug all by herself. Foolish. And as she is doing this “secret” mission to get the drug she uses her credit card at the bar. I just couldn’t with her.
Corey was an amazing MMC who deserved a better lady. He was great.

Pure Chemistry by Emilia Finn

The sassy, sexy banter in this book is off the charts. When Jennifer Lawrence, a chemist working on a drug that will help Cancer patients heads to her younger sister’s wedding, she knows she will see Corey Rosa again, but knows she can’t start anything with him no matter how much she wants to because they are about to become family. Corey doesn’t let that stop him from facing off against Jen in a crazy, intense battle of the wills. As a situation with the cancer drug overflows into one of Corey’s assignments, he realizes he will do whatever it takes to keep Jen safe but still let her be herself.

I’ve been waiting for Corey’s story for quite a while and I was not disappointed! Corey is the perfect mix of hard alpha male with a gooey marshmallow interior. The relationship is very slow-burn but the chemistry between the two is scorching throughout the book. While this is the fourth book in the Gilded Knights series, it can be read as a standalone and has a HEA. I would highly recommend going back to read all of the series or even all of Emilia’s series as the characters in all her books crossover into other series.

Another favourite added to the list

I always start a new Emilia Finn book wondering if I’m going to be disappointed because I love all of her previous books so much I don’t see how she can top the last, but every time a new book comes out I love it but for different reasons than the previous release and this one is no exception

The first thing I’ll say about this book is the characters are just hilarious, I mean, snort laugh at the golden one liners hilarious - especially Jen the main female character, she had me in stitches constantly throughout the whole book. Then add in the swoon-worthy 2nd eldest Rosa brother, drama, suspense & enough sexual tension to swing a battery operated toy at & you have another amazing read to add to the Rollers/Checkmate/Rosa universe.

The only thing I’m upset about is knowing that this is the second last book in this particular series. I’m so invested in the lives of these people I just want to keep reading about them forever.

Thank you so much for another family that I’ve fallen in love with (& so so many new jokes to share with the Rollin Crew)

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ummmm what?! 🔥🔥🔥🤤

And it finally happened! Since the day sneaky Emilia threw us the curveball when she released the cover of the book, I've been anxiously waiting to read it. Here I was reading the Rosa books daydreaming about Troy and then Corey's cover releases, stealing my heart! And now I got to meet him, and OMG! I was drooling like a fool, hating on Jen for making him suffer (it's my jealousy speaking), and I'm in love! I'm ready for four more kids! (Because I assure you, doesn't matter if I got my tubes tied, he's getting me pregnant!). When Jen said "I've been wet for a year since I met you" me too sister! Me too, since that cover came out! It was a pleasure to meet you Corey, may you ever be in my dreams... thank you Emilia for another masterpiece... ❤🔥🔥🔥🙌

Hilarious 😂

I just love this world Emelia has created with the Rosa's and the Checkmate team. I love the bickering and banter at family dinners, I seriously wish they were real. I loved the story, totally knew who leaked out Queen to the drug dealers. I loved Corey's character and Jen had me laughing out loud with her crazy nonsense. With that being said, I found it super annoying how much Jen was cockblocking and yes, there was some serious attraction and chemistry between Corey and Jen, but to go from wanting to get freaky to I love you and we're getting married was too much for me. I love a fantastic love story and I know Jen's dialogue was supposed to explain how they got there but no. Not working for me. Can't wait to see who lands the last Rosa brother.

Another phenomenal must read!!

I’ve been intrigued by Corey Rosa for a long time it seems, so I was thrilled to finally be able to dive into his story! As usual, it was amazing! It had everything—suspense, action, sizzling hot chemistry, witty banter, Checkmate characters, and, of course, romance!! To be honest, I got a little frustrated with Jen at times, needing her to get with the program, but I also understood her neuroses lol. But Corey was just, wow! I’d let a guy like him help me with my fears any day!! These Rosa boys are something else, and I cannot wait to see who finally snags Troy “Romeo” Rosa!!

Uuumm Yesss!!

Emilia Finn does it again ... I love everything she writes. I am gutted that I've caught up and now have to wait for releases.

I loved this book it was full of the most declicous banter. Corey is just top tier book boyfriend material - kind, funny, full of banter, loves his family and is dirty! 🔥

Jen broke my heart the overthinker that loves hard but is full of sass.

This story is everything you expect and more from an Emillia Finn book - full of banter, love, family, friendships and a little of suspense to keep you on your toes.

Cannot wait for Troy!!!

4/5

One of the things I absolutely love about Emilia Finn’s books are the characters she creates. She makes you fall in the love with each of them. This book has that trademark quality. The plot was interesting and I love the mystery/action take of this book. But the reason I’ve voting 4/5 is because of the instalove. I missed the build up and the relationship building. If I could change one thing about this book it’s that they talked, chatted, got to know each other for much longer than they did so that the chemistry could build naturally rather than just happen over such a short time.

Emilia Finn is a genius who makes me care about characters I hate

So… I dislike Jen’s character. She is arrogant and self-absorbed but somehow - through black magic trickery and Emilia Finn writing - I ended up caring about her and wanting her to be with Corey in the end. That is why she is a genius and why I keep reading all her books despite the fact that the characters sometimes piss me off. Other authors can’t do this. I put the book down and stop reading when they do. But Emilia Finn drew me into her story this time over my mental protests. Sigh. Take all my money, Emilia Finn, just keep writing.

Pure Chemistry

If you just dropped in and have not read any of the other books in this series, I would recommend you go to the first series in this storyline which is called Rollin On. Following that is the Survivor Series. The story of this wonderful cast of interconnected characters and the tales they tell is continued in the Checkmate series. Gilded Knights is next chronologically, though it detours somewhat from the previous 20 odd books in that it focuses on the Rosa's and briefly includes some of the others, primarily the Checkmate characters. This whole storyline will wrap up in the Stacked Deck series, which is the next generation.

Yes!!

Emilia delivers another pair of main characters that I don't want to let go of. I love Jen's snark and crazy. I love Corey's strength and humor. Jen is so mean and Corey kinda deserves most of it, but he will put himself in harms way before ever letting harm come to Jen... if he can stop it.
I laughed out loud sooo many times. I didn't put this story down, even while I was cooking dinner. Emilia is an epic storyteller and I will continue to one-click or pre-order every single story she writes.

Before reading this book, I thought Troy was going to be my favorite Rosa brother (and who knows, maybe he will be..but now I doubt it). Also, up until this book, Kane was my favorite Emilia Finn character. I think Corey is neck and neck with him now!

I loved how Corey and Jennifer interacted with each other. Lots of good one liners, zings and sexual innuendos. They loved going back and forth. I also love the nicknames (Popeye and Nerd). They were so funny at times, and others just hot. I loved the way they interacted. I will definitely be reading this one again.

Officially Swooning for Corey Rosa

Well Emilia, you've gone and done it again. Yet another tough as nails hottie-with-a-body hero, who has a heart of gold, and a soft spot for a sassy female. Corey is my favorite Rosa yet!
I absolutely loved getting to visit with Soph and Jay. I've missed their banter and badassery so much! The only thing that could make this story better is Kane. (Ahem ahem)

I look forward to seeing more from Troy, the Rosa crew, and hopefully all of my favorite my Roller Town sidekicks. On their worst behavior,of course!

Oh my heart!

What a huge treat this book was! I have read every book by Emilia Finn because she is simply amazing, and I’d say this book and Corey and Jen have made a home next to Jay and Sophia as most comical couple. Their banter, sparring and sexual chemistry was off the charts and so enjoyable. In other books we have seen fierce family commitment and dedication, and Jen was so spot on in fulfilling that role in this book. Grab a drink and settle in. You won’t want to pause even for a moment while you devour the next Rosa brother’s book.

pretty sure I found my new book boyfriend

Every new book Emilia comes out with makes me fall in love. But there was something truly special for me with this one. Corey just took my #2 spot. Bobby will always be #1, and the Bishop brothers are in my top as well, but Corey’s humor reminds me of my hubby and that just makes me melt.

Thanks for another fave Emilia! Can’t wait to read Troy’s story next!

Corey and Jen's story... What can I say?! Corey and Jen have an amazing chemistry and the banter was on a new level! I love the back and forth between them. This book had me howling with laughter from the moment I opened it!

I love all of Emilia's work but this has definitely taken the cake she knocked it out of the park! I can't wait for the final Rosa story!

I really did enjoy this book. It felt close to what I remember of her first series. The conflict was great, everyone helped everyone and Jen did as much as she could on her own to save herself. Corey did a great job of respecting boundaries and not crossing them even though you knew he wanted to. I can understand the lines she drew but why deny yourself the pleasure. Answers were given for what Corey does in life and Jen should be a good challenge for him. I can’t wait for the next book.

SWOON

Just when I think I can’t possibly love another Rosa brother, along comes Corey. His protectiveness knows no bounds when it comes to people he loves. When his life turns upside down by a head strong, feisty Jen, their chemistry becomes explosive. Will they survive the people that want only what Jen can provide or will it all go up in flames. You’ll find yourself laughing and swooning on your way to figuring it out.

So she does it again!

When you take one sister and she gets married and her older sister starts to fall for her brother in law's brother, what do you get? Well, knowing Emilia, we automatically get chemistry. But who knew it included explosions?! Watch Corey and Jennifer try as desperately as they can to fight their obvious attraction when we all know it's all for naught! But you can't deny these two make for a great read!
