I absolutely adore these characters and this volume has a favorite chapter of mine all about Klaus going up against an underworld boss in a game of fantasy chess. This story has stuck with me since watching the anime and it was great to return to it in manga form. This series is a particular favorite of mine and I'm excited to continue on with volume 3.

I do really enjoy this art style and world.
I also however, find it completely strange that 70% of this volume was basically a demon chess match for ones soul.

After reading this volume of Blood Blockade Battlefront, I can say for a certainty that I really enjoy this series. However, it is difficult for me to quantify why I'm enjoying it so much. The first story here, about an otherworldly and impossibly complicated chess-style game, is a story that the anime did slightly better, with more time for details and suspense building. I still read it tonight like it was a page-turn-a-second-thriller, oddly fascinated by the whole thing. The second and third parts of the volume introduce what I'm guessing is going to be the overarching story, about fighting elder vampires to save mankind. As this manga goes on for quite a while, I am genuinely curious to see how this story progresses, despite the fact that I pretty much knew how things would play out for the sake of this book.

Even though I knew the details of the two major stories in this volume before reading it, the characters, the well timed profanity, and the attention to detail here kept me going, with at least one laugh out loud moment. Usually, I get frustrated and bored trying to read a manga after seeing the anime, but this has enough stylistic differences and fundamental plot differences to keep it interesting and very entertaining.
