In May 1999, seven thousand people crowded the basilica in Bologna, Italy to offer a farewell to Enzo Piccinini, a surgeon who died tragically at the age of forty-eight. Who was this doctor who had left an indelible mark on so many lives? Formed in an era of political activism and violence, the young Enzo made a surprising decision-to pursue a life of faith and healing-thanks in part to his encounter with Father Luigi Giussani and his commitment to the movement of Communion and Liberation (CL). At the center of his vocation as a doctor was the belief that patients needed to be cared for in all their humanity, including their relationships, and to be helped to face pain and the fear of death-an approach still known as the "Enzo Method." While maintaining a hectic schedule as a surgeon and teacher, Enzo found time to travel all over Italy, visiting CL communities and moving people with the eloquence of his Christian witness. Designated "Servant of God" by the Church, the diocesan phase of the cause for his canonization has been opened. Il libro dà la possibilità di incontrare una persona fuori dalla norma.
Colpisce come, dopo l'incontro con un movimento ecclesiale ed un sacerdote speciale, abbia premuto l'acceleratore della sua vita ("he lived his life in the fast lane") volendo fare al meglio qualsiasi cosa, dando il massimo di sé (forse anche troppo?) e come tutto ciò rappresentasse per lui il realizzarsi della felicità, poiché poggiato su un Amore ricevuto e ridonato che dava significato alla sua esistenza.

Leggere una biografia, genere che amo particolarmente, chiede sempre di aprirsi alla vita di un altro, a lasciarsi colpire, stupire dal percorso umano lungo o breve di una persona, intessuto da fatti, incontri, che ne hanno determinato l’esistenza. Tanto più lo chiede questo libro dedicato ad Enzo Piccinini, veramente un insolito chirurgo, la cui passione per l’umano, con radici ben innestate nell’incontro con il cristianesimo, nella sua breve vita - morirà in un incidente statale a non ancora cinquant’anni - lo porterà a guardare il paziente in un modo diverso e a spendersi per lui, e per ogni uomo incrociato sul proprio cammino, dando tutto se stesso.

Letto durante il secondo lockdown della Pandemia Covid-19, è stata un'occasione per capire che il mio bisogno emotivo di ricevere determinate attenzioni da parte del personale medico-sanitario non deve essere minimamente censurate. Perché prima di essere una "paziente", per molti medici un corpo dove confermare la loro impossibile impresa di essere o sostutuirsi a Dio (o alla Natura), sono una persona. Enzo e i suoi amici (dottori e non) mi hanno fatto scoprire quanto il mio corpo non è mio, mi è dato ed è sacro, e va curato perché ci abita l'anima.

Enzo’s life and story really resonated with my heart. Science and technology can be a tool to relieve suffering and do the work of Christ. Lovely read!
