For many years, Harlham Hall has hidden its secrets well. Now, at last, those secrets are about to come crashing out into the daylight.
Many years ago, young Bernard Hartmann met a woman who worked for his father's company. Their love would change many lives forever, and would awaken a powerful force. They thought they could control what they'd discovered, and they found out far too late that they were about to fall victim to an extreme power. But could they save their child?
This is the fourth part of the six-part Wax serial. Each installment ends on a cliffhanger, and features scenes of horror and violence.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
I am not going to do a backstory on this review - just some thoughts as there are too many spoilers to give out a backstory for this book.
Thoughts:
The story goes into explicit details of the past with the characters of Bernard and Evelyn of things that happened in Harlham Hall which answers some questions that I had with the first three books.
There are detailed accounts of what happened at Harlham Hall and why there is quite a bit of mystery surrounding the place.
Things were revealed that kept me totally engrossed with this book and I read most of this book within a few hours as the pace picked up. Looking forward to reading the last two books in the series to find out how it all ends. Giving this book four "Mysterious Past" stars!
Okay, here we go. This one gives us Bernard’s and Evelyn’s history and the “origin” story if you will.
This one is a bit tough because I found that even though I was interested in hearing what made these tick, there wasn’t really, in my humble opinion, anyone to root for. I personally feel both characters are unlikable. But that is totally okay.
Like Wax 1, I saw the end coming, but that was okay too, because here the way Cross executed it was really cool. Creepy and very, very vivid.
Still enjoying this series. I am actually digging the creative choice in splitting this up. Even for small novellas each one plays a solid role in telling its own story while still moving the overarching story along. It’s like an orchestra. Each novella is like a separate instrument. They each play something different. They sound different, but they complement (at least so far they do) the sensations in my head created by the other novellas. They are also moving the whole along as well and creating something a bit bigger than their respective parts. Anyway, that’s just what occurred to me.
Addendum: Now that I am finished with the series, I feel this one definitely deserves 4 stars.
There was no technical or time reason for this book to have been split into six parts. They are all between 65 and 70 pages long, so would have amounted to an average sized novel. Seeing as they were released about a week apart, so the story must have been completed before the first was released, the *only* reason it could have been done was to make more money. Better to sell 6 books for 77p each than one for 99p!I Fortunately I have KU at the moment so I didn't buy any of them.
Any Cross is not a bad writer. In fact I absolutely love some of her novels. She obviously has a fantastic imagination and so much creativity. Her earlier works deserve more attention.
As time has gone on, however, she seems to have gotten lazy. The lack of proofreading and editing has become more obvious, continuity errors have gotten worse and now it appears that her stories are less important to her than how many books she can churn out in the shortest amount of time. The story behind "Wax" is interesting, it has potential, but much of that was lost by chopping it up. By the time the 6th installment was released I had lost interest, all momentum was halted and there was little character growth after the 2nd part. This new marketing technique has totally ruined what should really matter - the story.
I hope Amy goes back to being a writer. Maybe she could finish some of the old series that have been waiting years for an ending. Actual series comprised of full books! I would genuinely love to know how the tale of " The Devil, The Witch and The Whore" ends.
I do not recommend reading any of these 6. Perhaps if put together at some point it would make an enjoyable book. I definitely suggest waiting for that to happen.
Fabulous!! This fourth installment of the Wax series deals exclusively with Bernard and Evelyn’s backstory. It filled in a number of the mysteries that we encounter in the previous three books. I love Amy Cross’ writing style - dialog flows and is realistic, imagery is vivid and characters are well developed. A great addition to the series!
Still have suspicions and they look as if I could possibly be right, but book number 4 was the story of Evelyn and how she became the boss's wife and moved into the big house with him, leaving her friends and co-workers in the sheds in the middle of the forest. What will Wax 5 bring?
After reading Daisy (1-6) and enjoying that -- I took a change on this serial. Though not something that I might typically pick up -being more of a sci-fi fan- I took a chance and I have not been disappointed --- other than having to wait a week for the next installment [ wink ]
