Is Harlham Hall haunted? That's the question troubling Rachel as she spends more time with her mother. Something seems to be watching the pair of them from the shadows, some force that's apparently too scared to intervene directly. Will Rachel discover the truth before it's too late?
Brad, meanwhile, is getting to the bottom of one of the mysteries of the house. As he learns about Bernard's plans, he begins to understand exactly what's wrong with Evelyn. Can he warn Rachel in time, or does Bernard have a very different, much more macabre scheme up his sleeve?
This is the third part of the six-part Wax serial. Each installment ends on a cliffhanger, and features scenes of horror and violence.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Rachel and Brad are still trying to figure out what is happening within Harlham Hall as Rachel tries to spend more time with Evelyn to learn more about her life. Bernard is still keeping secrets and will not let too much be revealed of the house nor will he let them wander around too much within the house. Bernard becomes agitated with any time of exploration but then seems quite talkative about other things within the house. Evelyn still does not want to share details about why she abandoned Rachel when she was young as she is keeping everything under wraps.
That is about all I can give on a backstory as these books are short serials so not much can be revealed because of spoilers.
What is Bernard hiding? Why does he not want them exploring the house? Why won't Evelyn reveal what really happened that night she left Rachel?
No spoilers here as you will need to read this series to learn more of what is happening within Harlham Hall.
Thoughts:
These books keep getting better and better as each one reveals just a tiny bit more into the storyline without revealing too much of what is really going on and the author, Amy Cross keeps the suspense wrapped tight within the book making you want to keep going to learn what is happening.
Another suspenseful and intriguing book within this series. The author knows how to build up the mystery of the story and keep the reader entrapped within the book. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series which is Wax Part 4 and learning more about what happens within Harlham Hall. Giving this book four "Suspenseful Spooky" stars!
Still a very engaging and interesting series to me. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.
That being said, of the three I've gotten through so far, this one has been my least favorite.
To me, Bernard and Evelyn
That, and in this case, and by the 75%-80% mark I saw the ending coming so it was a bit of a let down from the twist/cliffhanger standpoint.
Still really good however.
Addendum: Now that I am finished with the series, This was one of the weaker ones. Kind of like Star Trek III. Decent, with some cool ideas and visuals, but not great. I feel this one deserves 3 stars.
After about forty thousand words, finally some action. The set-up-to and mystery have politely and unobtrusively given way to some mild suspenseful horror. At this point I'm starting to think it's me...
I need my horror to shock me, even if it's violence and gore free, something like the movie franchise: Paranormal Activity, and this falls far short of that but I guess it'll appeal to horror fans that prefer the mystery, suspense and atmosphere, rather than scenes of shock, violence and gore.
That said, it was enjoyable but I'm not sure I'll continue with the rest of the books.
Now we're cooking with gas!!!! Lol. We're finally getting somewhere, and the last scene (not the one 25 years ago) played out in my head like a movie. I don't want to spoil it, but by the fireplace?!?!?! Oh yeah..now I'm very interested
My suspicions as to the way the story is going are getting stronger. But wait, I've only just finished book 3, only halfway through the story. Surely I can't be right. That would make for a boring read of the next 3 books. I'll have to carry on and see where Amy takes me! Will I ever find out if I am right or wrong? Book 4 here I come, but will you have all the answers?
I’m really getting into the story now!! Last book ended on a cliff hanger with Brad noticing some strange things about Evelyn in the room, and now he’s missing. Rachel is looking for him for much of this book and neither Bernard nor Evelyn seem too concerned or willing to help. As always, Amy Cross offers some excellent dialog and fabulous imagery. I often think that many of her books would make great movies!
This book is really good, although quite short. I took one star off because there are wrong words in some parts, mixed up names, and the editing was terrible. Feels like it was typed out too quickly maybe. Otherwise, I am totally enthralled and will start on the next book asap!
Omg this story keeps getting better and better the more it goes on. This one tells more to you on what is going on with Rachel and Bernard and it’s quite terrifying. Loved this book and cannot wait for the next!
This book series has the Twilight phenomenon. The writing isn't brilliant, but it's a total page turner. You continue to need to know what will happen next.
There was no technical or time reason for this book to have been split into six parts. They are all between 65 and 70 pages long, so would have amounted to an average sized novel. Seeing as they were released about a week apart, so the story must have been completed before the first was released, the *only* reason it could have been done was to make more money. Better to sell 6 books for 77p each than one for 99p!I Fortunately I have KU at the moment so I didn't buy any of them.
Any Cross is not a bad writer. In fact I absolutely love some of her novels. She obviously has a fantastic imagination and so much creativity. Her earlier works deserve more attention.
As time has gone on, however, she seems to have gotten lazy. The lack of proofreading and editing has become more obvious, continuity errors have gotten worse and now it appears that her stories are less important to her than how many books she can churn out in the shortest amount of time. The story behind "Wax" is interesting, it has potential, but much of that was lost by chopping it up. By the time the 6th installment was released I had lost interest, all momentum was halted and there was little character growth after the 2nd part. This new marketing technique has totally ruined what should really matter - the story.
I hope Amy goes back to being a writer. Maybe she could finish some of the old series that have been waiting years for an ending. Actual series comprised of full books! I would genuinely love to know how the tale of " The Devil, The Witch and The Whore" ends.
I do not recommend reading any of these 6. Perhaps if put together at some point it would make an enjoyable book. I definitely suggest waiting for that to happen.
