As she starts to get to know her long-lost mother, Rachel makes some disturbing discoveries. Why is Evelyn so cold and calculating? Is she hiding something, or is she the victim of an entity that's far more horrific?
Meanwhile Brad tries to discover a little more about Harlham Hall and its mysterious inhabitants. A strange little girl seems to be haunting the house's grounds, while unusual equipment in a garage suggests that Bernard has plans of his own. And then, late one night, Brad make a terrifying discovery.
This is the second part of the six-part Wax serial. Each installment ends on a cliffhanger, and features scenes of horror and violence.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
I've been patiently waiting for the plotline to kick in but...sadly it's still hanging. "...scenes of horror and violence" that was promised in the blurb was conspicuously absent too!
Rachel finally locates her mother, Evelyn Cassidy but things just seem off as Bernard seems over protective of Evelyn and doesn't seem to want to share any information. Evelyn tries to explain her reasons of abandoning Rachel but she just seems out of sorts as well which makes Rachel and Brad wonder what is really going on in Harlham Hall.
Rachel and Brad are invited to stay at the house which they end up doing but the house has secrets of its own and it seems there is a haunting afoot, but Bernard and Evelyn just dismiss it as an old creaking house.
What is really going on in Harlham Hall? Is there a haunting? What are Bernard and Evelyn hiding?
No spoilers here as you will need to read this book series!
Thoughts:
This second book in this series is just as mysterious as the first one and the mystery deepens with Evelyn Cassidy as she doesn't reveal too much to Rachel and yet Rachel is still not satisfied with what she has learned so far. The house itself seems to be very secretive and things begin to happen within the house that seem to make it haunted.
Secrets, hauntings, mystery is the main theme of book two and the characters of Evelyn and Bernard seem to be out of touch with reality. I read book two really quick as I was planning on reading just a little bit of the book but the mystery of what was happening within the house just grabbed me and I read almost half of the book in one sitting!
Definitely looking forward to reading book three to see what happens next in this mysterious house and to learn more about the characters of Evelyn and Bernard. Giving this book four "Mysterious Haunting" stars!
I liked Wax, Part 2 even more than the first volume.
I must say I am really enjoying the serial nature of this story. To me, it totally works. I got this one as part of the “boxed set” for all six volumes for my kindle.
We learn more, pretty much about everyone. Some of it is good, some not so good.
I liked this one, perhaps more so than volume 1 because the cliff-hanger reveal of this one blew me away. It created questions and an image that just … well, it just cemented me being totally invested in this short series.
I’ll still hold off putting ratings until the end of the series, but damn,Damn, this one hit me. It left me with more questions, but more questions in a good way. Like you want more. It’s like that time you get a pizza, and you’ve already eaten (arguably) more than you should, but then you’re looking at it, and you think, yeah, there’s some left, but it’s not gonna kill me to have another slice, right? No big deal. I’ll just have just a little bit more. That’s okay, right? Next thing you know the whole pie has gone to pizza heaven in your stomach. But then you're sorry, but not reallysorry.
Wax, by Amy Cross is kind of like that. So I’m gonna be delving into that next part of it very, very soon. And unlike the pizza, I’m not gonna feel guilty about it. Or extremely dehydrated the next day…
Candidly, although I’ve read some other Cross books, I’m wondering if this isn’t the best series to start with for someone to interested in reading a first story. The pages almost sort of turn themselves, the writing is so smooth and easy to read. It’s an easy story to “digest” and since it has so many supernatural elements to it, it’s easy to sit back and read, but it gives you enough clues that you can figure out a few things about where the story is going. In this instance, I did not, but I still loved this one.
Addendum: Now that I am finished with the series, I feel this one definitely deserves all the stars. Best one in the series!
The more we learn about Evelyn and Bernard, the more questions I have about them. They're a couple of weird coocks but I'm gonna keep reading until everything makes sense
I can’t wait for the next one! That’s the only downside of this series. After spending her life looking for her birth mother Rachel has finally located her.
Part 2 is far more suspenseful. Strange things are happening. I’m looking forward to Part 3. It’s difficult to review this as it would surely contain spoilers.
Now this is more like it! After a slow start in book 1, book 2 has captured my attention! Rachel and Brad have entered the home of Evelyn (her birth mother) and Bernard and they are all getting to know each other. Rachel and Brad both begin to notice strange things happening….like seeing some weird machinery in the garage and some coughing coming from a supposedly empty bedroom. We are also beginning to see some strange behavior from Bernard and Evelyn, vacillating between calm/happy and volatile. Still a little bit of a slow build but this ends on a fabulous cliff hanger!!
So first and foremost, the story line so far is neat. It’s keeping me on my toes and I don’t want to put the book down! However, there are errors in the writing that bother me. Many of Amy’s books reference one character when they meant to reference another and they mix us the names. For me, that’s hard to overlook and continue reading.
This is the second book in the series, and it still doesn’t make much sense! Not sure that I want to read the next one. It is a continuing story that leads no where!
There was no technical or time reason for this book to have been split into six parts. They are all between 65 and 70 pages long, so would have amounted to an average sized novel. Seeing as they were released about a week apart, so the story must have been completed before the first was released, the *only* reason it could have been done was to make more money. Better to sell 6 books for 77p each than one for 99p!I Fortunately I have KU at the moment so I didn't buy any of them.
Any Cross is not a bad writer. In fact I absolutely love some of her novels. She obviously has a fantastic imagination and so much creativity. Her earlier works deserve more attention.
As time has gone on, however, she seems to have gotten lazy. The lack of proofreading and editing has become more obvious, continuity errors have gotten worse and now it appears that her stories are less important to her than how many books she can churn out in the shortest amount of time. The story behind "Wax" is interesting, it has potential, but much of that was lost by chopping it up. By the time the 6th installment was released I had lost interest, all momentum was halted and there was little character growth after the 2nd part. This new marketing technique has totally ruined what should really matter - the story.
I hope Amy goes back to being a writer. Maybe she could finish some of the old series that have been waiting years for an ending. Actual series comprised of full books! I would genuinely love to know how the tale of " The Devil, The Witch and The Whore" ends.
I do not recommend reading any of these 6. Perhaps if put together at some point it would make an enjoyable book. I definitely suggest waiting for that to happen.
