She’s out to prove she belongs on the track. He’s out to ruin her reputation. But when the sparks ignite, neither one can hit the brakes.

Kellie

Kellie was a rebel without a cause, a defiant force to be reckoned with, and everything her parents feared she'd grow up to be.
Defying the odds and breaking the rules. On and off the track. That was Kellie's motto for life. Being a female race car driver in what's considered a male-dominated profession has given her some challenges in life.
But when a wrench is suddenly thrown into the path of her dreams, she decides to take matters into her own hands and not bend down to anybody.

Ashton

Ashton has had his fair share of rules. Growing up as the son of a famous indie race car driver, he has been at the epicenter of the media his whole life.
Things take a sudden turn when Ashton catches Kellie, his old high school "acquaintance" in a rather compromising position, then the perfect plan started to form.

Blackmailing Kellie into a fake relationship was the only way to get what he wanted and that was to get the media off his back and his playboy ways. Even if fighting him every step of the way and letting him see that fire inside of her made him fall harder each and every day, pretending to fake the feelings he developed might just veer him off track of his perfect plan all together.

J.L. Baldwin’s Scandal is an adrenaline pumping, fast paced, sexy contemporary sports romance guaranteed to have your heart racing!

It was fake-dating, race-car driving and the start gave me 'She's the Man' movie vibes

After only two chapters, I was already anxious. The “I’m not like the other girls” female character, and the “rich spoiled jerk who treats women like garbage” male character, weren’t my cup of tea. But I thought, maybe, they would be redeemed, and I kept reading. Oh they’re kind of redeemed! But their story isn’t really good.

No, that’s not it. There IS a decent, maybe even a good story somewhere. Kellie hiding the fact that she is a woman to get sponsors and enter a car race, that was a good idea! That she’s determined to do anything, including agreeing to be a fake girlfriend to her high school enemy, even better! But why then does she decide later that racing is less important than going to a gala with said fake boyfriend? That doesn’t make sense. And by the middle of the book, you’ll barely remember that Kellie is a race driver.

This is not the only inconsistency. Ashton sometimes has green eyes, sometimes has blue eyes. The dress that Kellie’s best friend was making for her for the gala? Never mentioned again after Ashton buy her something. Ashton’s big reveal that changes a lot of things–including how the reader would perceive the character–is never even hinted at, until the end. At one point, they’re making breakfast, argue, go out to make up, and it’s 8 at night and they’re eating dinner at a restaurant. Those twenty minutes were quite long! And they’re supposed to live in a small town but they haven’t seen each other in ten years, and Ashton’s big secret was still a secret? Absolutely unbelievable. So many small and bigger inconsistencies.

As for Ashton, who’s kind of redeemed… I found him vulgar and shallow. He kept making up to Kellie when he’d been a jerk, by dirty talk to her. Actually, besides desire and attraction, there was nothing to this couple. They never talked about anything. There was no common ground between them. I couldn’t understand where their love came from. Even the steamy scenes were meh and repetitive.

I felt like I had read a very first draft written by the seat of the pants. Not a novel ready for release. It needs a theme, characters’ profiles, a detailed plan, and a thorough editing.

Quickie

- Main couple: Kellie McKenzie & Ashton Caldwell
- Hotness: 3/5

- + the whole “I’ll fake being a man so I can race” thing was a good idea
- – so many incoherences

When Kellie's blackmailed by her high school bully into a fake relationship, she has no idea it will end up becoming very real.

OK, I have to first say this - Ashton is a major douche nozzle for about 90% of this story. Bully romances are only successful in my eyes if the bully redeems him or herself, and if they deserve forgiveness. I do not think Ashton completely redeemed himself, but he sort of turned over a new leaf near the end. That being said, I still didn't like him, and found his character to be gross. And then there's Kellie - well, she wasn't horrible but she was rather boring, and did absolutely nothing for me. The story itself is OK but not very memorable I'm afraid. An unlikable hero and a boring heroine just aren't enough for me to rate this higher than 2 stars unfortunately.

J.L Baldwin gives us a story that has the lead female as a kick-ass take no prisoner living in a man's world. Scandal has us loving Kellie and how she is determined to make it as a professional racer but there is too much testosterone in the way. How will she get around it? Who can she trust and who will throw her to the wolves, well the press in this case.

Kellie is all for women doing everything that men can do and that includes being a professional racer but since her balls are not in the right place there are walls put up around the end goal. When she decides to take matters into her own hands she never thought about what could happen. When a person from her past, Ashton, learns about what she did, will she be able to convince him to stay quiet? She is haunted by the way that he ruined her life back in high school and feels that he will ruin it again because that is the type of person that he is. When he blackmails her into doing something that he needs her to do, will she give in but keep up the walls?

Aston was the typical guy in school that all the girls loved, guys wanted to be friends and he knew it. He has an "I'm the best" attitude and used it when he could. He is still the same guy now and doesn't care about anything until he receives some news that has him seeing dollar signs. When he finds out that the guy that just won a race was not a guy but the girl that he tormented in high school he sees a way to get what he wants. He blackmails her into going along with his plan but what happens throws him for a loop. What happens when he lets his walls down and Kellie sees the real him that he has hidden all those years?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it definitely belongs as part of K. Bromberg's Driven series.

I haven't read a bullying book for some time and this guy wins the prize for biggest douchebag! Is he redeemable? Meh...

Kellie is your badass female auto racer who is trying to change the rules in the auto racing industry. Determined to get into a big race with no sponsor willing to help her because she's a woman, she dresses as a man and wins. However, her ruse backfires and she is blackmailed by her evil childhood nemesis, Ashton Caldwell, to become his fake girlfriend in exchange for a lot of money. Will they keep it fake or will Ashton destroy her heart once again?

Ashton Caldwell is a poor little rich boy who gets everything he wants: money, cars, women. However, this time his father has changed the rules and wants him to man up and seriously start thinking about his future. When he grabs the opportunity to get Kellie right where he wants her, will he be able to pull a fake relationship off or will his conscience finally kick into gear?

I'm not seeing the attraction between these two. Kellie was seriously traumatized by Ashton's bullying in school, and she needed to just walk away from his crude and immature ass no matter what the consequences. I mean what sane person uses sex to make someone feel better all of the time? It's a temporary fix and then you have to deal with reality, dude. Kellie is just as immature when she goes along with his bullshit though she does step back to consider her career which she worked so hard for. What makes her think he can change that fast? He has treated women badly all his life and his cavalier way about life, in general, is lousy. I realize the author tried to give him a human side with something that happened in his past, but it seemed too little, too late. Also, can Ashton really run his dad's business after sluffing off most of his life? Your guess is as good as mine.

Friends, Jenni and Dex, are another couple that has serious issues with sex healing everything. At least Jenni has a solid career as a fashion designer, but I'm not sure what Dex does for a living. I did respect Kellie's family with how protective they are with Kellie and their justifiable hostility towards Ashton.

If you like contemporary romances with a lot of sex and an improbable storyline, give this book a try.

Thank you to Ms. Baldwin for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

This wasn't very bad, but it could have been a lot better.

Kelli & Ashton have a bad history - the kind that makes for awkward and uncomfortable reunions and conversations. But when Kelli is put in a situation that could negatively affect her career she finds herself agreeing to be in a fake relationship with the boy who made her life hell all those years ago. But Ashton is on a mission to prove he's not the boy he was, and that as a man, he's determined to be better and show Kelli his best.

I don't know if I would have given Ashton a second chance after what he did to Kelli in high school if I were in her position. Also, I found that Kelli's character was a bit indecisive and wishy-washy. At one point, she's all about racing and being at the top of her game, then when she gets the chance to really prove her skills, she decides that racing isn't important anymore, skipping out on it to go to a party. Ashton himself was really crude and shallow. The author attempted to show character growth, but I didn't seem to find that he was fully redeemed by the end of the read. Did the couple have chemistry? Yes. But romance, love, intimacy all seemed to materialise out of nowhere near the end of the story. I didn't find a real love connection between the two of them.

Also, there were some stops and starts. Some things were mentioned, then never seen/heard again. And there were time jumps that had me going back to previous pages to see if I had missed the point where entire hours had disappeared.

While the overall premise of the story was great, the write-up and detailing left much to be desired.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book.

I have to say that I will never get enough of the books that have female drivers since I'm all about the #GIRLPOWER! Of course Kellie has to play a man to start living her dreams, and we all know secrets have a way of coming out. Of course, there's manchild Ashton, who I never warmed up to in any capacity because it took him too long to be redeemed in my eyes (but that's just me) who is making her life a bit more difficult. He's a spoiled brat who ended up blackmailing Kellie to be his fake girlfriend for his own image, and that was really another strike against him because he came off very selfish & self-centered. Of course the fake doesn't stay fake since I will say the sparks were flying between them. Now, I'm not against anyone getting in a relationship but it seemed a tad weird that Kellie allowed her dream to take a backseat when it came to him but again, that's just me. I will say that I had a very hard time putting this book down since I was drawn in completely, which is why I could give it this rating. Please remember that this is only my opinion not fact so please decide for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

An enjoyable read, a bit on the predictable side but none the less a good read. Kellie is fighting as a women in a mans world. Ashton is your typical spoilt, rich, play boy, who faces an ultimation from his father. Settle down or lose your trust fund. When Ashton catches Kellie in a secret she doesn't want discovered he blackmails her to become his fake girlfriend. Ashton and Kellie have a past from their high school days, a past in which Ashton hurt Kellie. Now she must give in to his demands or face her secret being broadcast far and wide. It's a bit like a game of table tennis with Ashton and Kellie, they have some hot chemistry but the past and other events send them back and forward. I got a little confused at one point, it appeared that Ashton's father knew her secret yet the leaking of the secret hadn't happened by that point in the book?? Despite this anomoly it was still a good read.

A Driven Novel

Kelli is a female racer that is trying to break into the sport but can't get sponsors because she's a female. She wins a race but is disguised as a guy until an old high school acquaintance catches her.
Ashton Caldwell comes from money, his dad was one of the great indie race car drivers so Ashton has always been in the media. He knew Kelli back in high school but was a jerk to her and a bully. Not much has changed now that he's 27.
He blackmails Kelli into playing his fake girlfriend so he can get his dad off his back and get his inheritance.

I love racing and seeing a woman do well is great. However, I don't care for the bullying, I think it was over the top and then to "blackmail" her didn't go over for me. Didn't really feel a connection between them either. I had a hard time getting into this book

Kellie is a woman on a mission to have the racing career that she always dreamed about even if that means not being entirely honest. The only problem is that the world she is building is about to come crashing down if she doesn’t agree to pretend to date Ashton, a man she wants nothing to do with.

Ashton is a man who needs to repair his image and now that he has leverage on Kellie she is just the woman to help him whether she wants to or not. He is a man with secrets and Kellie was supposed to be a means to an end which turns their journey into a bumpy ride.

When it comes to both Kellie and Ashton there are times that they are intriguing and times when you question their decision making but they will definitely make you feel.

This is a book in the Driven World Series and my first read by this author, and I must say that I quite enjoyed the storyline and the characters. It is a steamy, enemies to lovers romance between race car driver Kellie and playboy Ashton. These flawed but likeable characters and the unique plot make for an intriguing read. What starts out as a fake relationship turns into something more. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama, steam, sweetness, frustrating moments, family dynamic, unexpected twists, and passion, plus appealing secondary characters to keep the reader interested. The main characters share an undeniable chemistry and connection. An engaging read with a happy ending.

Kellie is the hard headed female driver determined to get ahead in the male dominated sport. Kellie goes against the males and does something that she should not have done. Ashton is a fellow race car driver that finds out what she has done. Ashton, unfortunately is a high school acquaintance that ruin her life back then. So Ashton then comes up with a way to force her into a relationship to avoid what she did going public, she has to go with it. So what should Kellie do when she actually gets to see the real Ashton when it is not what she expected. Good read overall!

Scandal was a cute and quick read (for me). I loved the idea of a woman in a dominant male atmosphere and how she had to "Mulan" us to get in. I will say I kind of wish there was more focus on that part of the story with the romance woven in. I'm a sucker for a woman playing with the big boys and winning. (that's just me).

In the beginning I wanted to throat punch Ashton and I was PRAYING for Kellie to do it at least once. (sometimes I'm violent LMAO).

All in all a good story.

If you like blackmail, fake dating, a little enemies(ish) to lovers and little race car driving grab Scandal and dive into this world.

This is a good addition to this amazing series. Kellie is a female race driver who is struggling in a male dominated world, which brings its own set of challenges. Ashton is a playboy who catches Kellie in a compromising position and blackmails her to be in a fake relationship with him to keep the media off his back. This is a fast-paced story with redemption, emotions, and is an enemies / lover’s tale, which is an enjoyable read. The only downside and this is in my opinion only, is that I struggled to engage with the characters, however, I look forward to reading more from this author.

Oh my! The story of Ashton and Kellie took me on a roller coaster ride! Ashton took a bit to warm up to but he definitely grew on me! They have a rocky history, a great push and pull as well as a ton of fire! I loved Kellie and her spunk, her determination and strength. It's a great enemies to lovers story that had the pages turning!

Oh, Ashton. You are thoroughly unlikeable for a good chunk of this book. You’re a shallow, petty, cruel, manipulative manchild. But then you let us in a little bit and some of the reasons behind the behavior are revealed. And when push came to shove, you REALLY stepped up to make things right. So, yeah, I’ll admit it. You managed to grow on me. But it took a while.

Kellie, you made me sort of sad. And hopeful. And the fact that you were willing to give up your immediate chance at making your dream come true for love showed a lot about your character. If only those around you all showed the same ability to be open and honest half as often as you did. Sure, you were pushed into admitting some of your hurts, but it’s understandable because one of the people who hurt you most was the one asking for the chance now.

I enjoyed this story but had a difficult time liking a few of the side characters. Dexter and Jenni were annoying and could be almost cruel with their comments. But maybe that’s all part of their appeal because sometimes hate does make the…love…better. Who knows. And I did like how Ashton and Kellie managed to find their way back to good, albeit with some serious PR magic on Ashton’s part. But he gave a decent grovel, so I’ll allow it.

This was good but I think could have been better. While I liked the back and forth with Kellie and Ashton and the will-they-won't-they scenario because of their past, there were a lot of inconsistencies that had me confused. They had chemistry and it takes a while to warm up to Ashton but I didn't feel their story was very organic and would have loved to see a little more development in some areas. I can't say a lot or I will give away too much. I did enjoy it however and liked the premise.

This was an entertaining and enjoyable enemies to lovers romance. Ashton really frustrated me through a lot of the book, and was a bit shallow and cruel, but he did step up and redeem himself. I liked Kellie and enjoyed her spunk. This is a fast paced, steamy read, and one I enjoyed.

A fun sweet read

I wasn't too sure about Ashton at first but he ended up growing on me. I do like the women empowerment part of this story and how Kellie had the She's The Man type moment. This was my first story I read in the Driven World and I liked it. :)

This was an ok read. I wasn’t a big fan of Ashton. He was a jerk when he was younger and he was still a jerk as he got older. He did get better by the end of the book but I still couldn’t warm up to him. I liked the Kellie was a driver.

Had potential

This had so much potential and love the heroine being a driver. It did have some good banter and steam. It unfortunately fell flat with so many plot holes.

Blackmailing, tenacity, steaminess, regret, forgiveness, friendship, independence did I mention steaminess…just a few of many surprises in this book!

“My instincts are screaming at me to not do it, that there are too many red flags flying in my face, but I feel this pull to agree to go…”

Things aren’t always as they appear…is the cocky bad boy just that…or does he hold secrets and pain that make him pretend that he doesn’t have a care in the world? Can a leopard change its spots…or once a bad boy always a bad boy?

“I don’t have mental breakdowns. I have erratic fits that combust into large explosions. It happens to the best of us.”

Stopping at nothing to fulfill your dreams. When it feels like no one is in your corner…is it worth risking everything? Can you pave the way so others never have to go through the same thing to live out their true passion?

“I’m officially ruined for anyone else. And I don’t know if I’m happy or sad about that fact.”

Can a tiger change it's stripes? Or once a bad boy, always a bad boy? Ashton Caldwell, infamous playboy since he was a teen, doesn't care about how his crude, womanizing ways affect his image or his family's.

When it seems like no one is in your corner... would you put everything on the line? For Kellie McKenzie, forever a tomboy, there's nothing that she wouldn't do to fulfill her dream of racing. Even agreeing to fake date her enemy; Ashton.

Scandal is an installment of K. Bromberg's Driven World by J.L. Baldwin. This story is full of tenacity, blackmail, regret, forgiveness, and steamy scenes between two enemies. Baldwin is a new-to-me author and I'm looking forward to diving into more of her work.

I honestly wasn't too into this book. I did give it a chance. I did finish it, but I felt like I was fighting to get there. This book reminded me of this movie called "Motorcrossed", which I thought would be ok. But other things started to happen that I forced myself to read it. I wish it was a little bit better.
