I am such a big fan of this series. I think it's a great take on vampires without being too déjà vu. I can't recommend this series enough if you love paranormal romance.
This book made me angry... The female lead is just so incredibly annoying and immature. She comes across as a very spoiled and sheltered person who is screaming at people for not letting her play with them. Not speaking for over a month for that reason? Because “she can’t face the truth”? Sorry, no. I understand the author wanted to make her this little princess who faces the injustice of overbearing and condescending family and friends, but the thing is she just keeps proving they’re right in not treating her as an capable adult as she makes the most childish unilateral decisions.. I don’t care what genitalia you have, but if you truly want people to respect your input and admire how you can handle yourself and tough situations, well act like it. Don't make it about a man vs woman thing when it is in reality a personality (or lack there of) issue.
At one point, she sees another female character reading about history and she finds it so odd, she says they’re missing romances in the library (not that you can’t read romances AND non-fiction informative books) like the thought of a woman reading something other than romance is a tragedy. All hell is breaking loose and where is she? Picking roses of course. I mean.. I would still not see her as any more of a fragile little flower, regardless of her sex.
And just WHYYYYY, ohmyfreakinhgod why did she keep in defending and treating Samuel so well throughout 80% of the book?????? What he was doing was crazy and wrong and she was all like “poor him, he does not deserve to be treated badly”. nope. NO.
But most of all.. the TERRIBLE plot of “is her choice to self sacrifice” just fell so flat.. I skimmed to a lot of it just because I liked the series and needed some closure.
I have been looking forward to this book ever since I finished the last one in the series. I had a feeling it would be rough, steamy and there would be numerous challenges—due to Hawke being a loyal assassin—but I was not expecting the twist we got!
This book was undoubtedly my favourite of the series, I was hooked from page one and DID NOT put it down until I had finished.
While everything has been resolved—in terms of the relationship this book focused on—a few loose ends need tying up, so I hope we get to see more from this world that Mrs Whiskey has created.
I’ve read all of Samantha Whiskey’s books but this one was by far my favorite, even if it did make me cry at parts. Avi and Hawke are a perfect match and their relationship brought a smile to my face. Additionally, the evolving story with the throne and the surprise regarding Saint and Samuel was unexpected to say the least. Loved the book, can’t wait for the next! Daphne and Xavier?
Buku paling ditunggu dari seri Onyx Assassins. Dan... tidak mengecewakan wkwkwkwk hareudang pisan, euy 🤣
Jadi, si Avianna kan princess, sementara Hawke aka Hawthorne bodyguard. Tropenya aja udah kedemenan aku banget. Nah, Avi ternyata udah dicap sama tanda matingnya Hawke puluhan tahun dan Hawke nggak sadar, karena selalu ngerasa dia tuh nggak pantas bersanding sama seorang princess yada-yada. Padahal saling suka, minta digetok nih para vampir.
Nggak sabar baca buku Daphne sama Xavier wkwkwk

This wasn't my favorite of this series and I really love this series. But it got fantastic and I got sucked in. I waited for this book for what seemed like forever and the only thing I loved about it was watching Avi and Hawke finally admit their truths.
I’ve read 5/6 books for this series. I finished each book in one sitting, 3-4 hours each book. At first I really liked this series but as I got into the 5th which is this one, I started to feel bored and found myself skimming and flipping through pages just to get to the end.
Initially I was really drawn to this series. The story heavily reminds me of JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series (one of my faves). By the end of the 5th book however, I started to feel I was in a janky, subpar watpad/fanfiction of JR Ward’s series. The characters lacked depth, it was a little hard for me to connect to the “brothers”. The author could have given us more with their backstories, could have had more angst and brooding. The plot was lackluster in my opinion. The MCs fell into their fated mating way too easily, I expected a bit more reluctance from the characters. I sort of like that in a fated mated trope, it’s part of the fun wondering if they are just going to shut up and let it take over or keep fighting the inevitable. That sort of thing has to be done just right though, it can tire and get annoying.
I like a good balance of plot and spice in a series. I love to fall into the romance and the surrounding back story. I liked how the author included multiple supernatural species in these books, the sort of high table escque world leaders thing she had going on was fun.
Spoilers now!
What really turned this review for me was this book in particular. The way that the book was written made this part of the plot feel so random and a copy cat of JR Ward. Hawke is like this brooding dark alpha male who doesn’t think he’s good enough for the female MC and he’s got his 50 Shades red room condo apartment, that bit was just thrown in there but I found myself thinking, “Lover Unbound? Vishous what are you doing here?!?!?” It was just a poor copy cat in my opinion and held no candle to the series that clearly this author was heavily inspired by.
I love a fated mates, brooding, possessive alpha male tropes which is why I give this 3 stars. But if you want to read something with character depth, world building, page turning plot, and great spice I would just go for the gold and pick up JR Ward’s series.
I will say for the most part I liked this one but I can’t get over that the whole second book in this series was about almost the exact same thing and all of a sudden there’s a way to get it done? (Don’t want to spoil anything by explaining too much) but seriously the second book is all about sorry you can try but it won’t work and this one all of a sudden (with no explanation) it’s super easy to do?!! Sorry I just didn’t like it. And also getting the their own family trees wrong drove me insane. Annika was Olivia’s niece not her sister and all that would have taken to get that detail right was a simple look back to that book! I was so excited for this one too… what a let down
I was very excited about this book. I thought it would be my favorite but certain things were just weird. The pacing was off. When it came to Samuel and the blood madness there were no signs, the fact that they rejected the mating bond where in previous books it indicated that the rejection (especially when it had gotten so strong) would almost kill them. Just certain things were weird. It was still an amazing book, but i guess Ransoms book is still my favorite, instead of what i assumed this one would take it's place.

August 2024 - re-read. I actually liked it better the second time than I did the first. Can't remember why I gave it 4 stars then. Upgraded to 5. I do think it helps when you're reading one right after another.
I've been a huge fan of this author and this series right from the beginning. The hotness, the intrigue and the mating bond - need I say more?!? Now that the Assassins are partnered off, I hope we get more soon. Will it be the hunters? Maybe a little Demon action? Whatever it is, I hope the wait isn't too long.
I can't get enough of this series and it needs to be read in order. I love this world Ms. Whiskey has built. It is a bit different than some PNR worlds. It isn't better or worse, just different. I love the deep bonds between the assassins. I've lost track now of h9w many assassins are still single from the group we met in book one but we also now have all of the old assassins they revived in a previous book. This book did a good job of melding the younger and older assassins but there is definitely a gap between them being one single minded group. But my original point is we should still have at least five assassins books left. And I can only hope she moves to another of the paranormal groups once all of the assassins are mated.
We have been watching Hawke pine for Avianna for some time and their coupling was every bit as hot and explosive as expected. There are several steamy scenes in the book and most of them do a good job of building anticipation before culminating in fireworks.
My biggest problem with this book was it was too short. It was only about 3.5 hours of read time for me. I believe the Kindle app estimate was close to 6 hours in the about this book feature. I do read fast and frequently beat the estimates but not usually by such a big margin and I didn't do any skimming.
If you have loved the series thus far, you will enjoy this book. I cannot wait to read the next one and we didn't get even a small clue as to which assassin is next. I do have a guess as to the female but won't be disappointed if I'm wrong.
This was both the most anticipated book in this series and the one with the most angst. Avianna and Hawk have been circling each other since book 1. And when we finally find out the real reason Avianna has been wearing gloves, it’s followed by the heartbreaking revelation that she’s agreed to marry someone else in order to save her family.
Hawk has loved Avianna from afar for years, but he never thought he could be good enough for the Princess. He sees himself as low born and covered in darkness, but he’s miscalculated Avianna. She may portray the perfect Princess to the world, but inside she’s quite the spitfire. When Hawk finds out Avianna is not only his mate, but betrothed to the enemy, things start to change for him. They give in to their urges for 3 weeks before Avianna has to move forward with her betrothal, and the closer they get the more Hawk doubts he’ll be able to walk away.
I really loved Hawk in this book. He’s been a bit of an outsider in the other books, and it was interesting to see the protective alpha side he has for Avianna. He never gave up hope they would find a way out of the situation they were in and that made me love him even more. Their “final” goodbye definitely broke me a little, even knowing something would happen to fix everything. I just wish Avianna had fought for Hawk with the same ferocity that he fought for her.
Overall this was a great addition to the Onyx Assassins series. It was obvious to me from the beginning that Hawk and Avianna would end up together and I’m glad I was right!
An action packed and thrilling addition to the “Onyx Assassins” series. I could not put down “Crimson Kiss” until I got to the end. It captured me from the first word until the final sentence at the end of the book.
After being returned to the palace and not speaking for nearly a month, Avianna has finally spoken. To save her brother, she’s agreed to marry Samuel, who thinks the royal line was stolen from his family. However, there are a couple snags to this plan. Hawke, who’s watched her from afar, will do anything to make her his even if he feels that he’s not good enough for her.
The angst and the need for each other between Hawke and Avianna was absolutely delicious. The build-up and teasing we were getting from the previous books had me anxiously waiting for Avi and Hawke’s story. Hawke is growly, alpha protectiveness is one of my favorite things about him. The things he would do to protect her and give her everything she wanted was so swoony. And Avianna was so strong and amazing. The way she was going to sacrifice her happiness for the better was so admirable. We get updates from the other assassins and some possible hints for more books in the series. I can’t wait for more.
Of this series, this book is the one that I was looking forward to the most. I love the strong silent type in a hero and Hawke is that hero in every way. I love that this is kind of a class difference romance, even though the only person who is against the match is Hawke himself and no one else (at least no one likable) cares about the circumstances of his birth. I also really love Avi. She is so mysterious and she has always loved Hawke from the first moment she met him.
This book was so full of angst, denied feeling, and secret longings and I really loved it. It was incredibly exciting and the twists and turns of the story really kept me engaged. I love Avi and Hawke as a couple and I love their interactions in the previous books that have led to this moment. I also really enjoyed that in spite of Hawke's strength, Avi is really the one leading their romance and calling the shots, Hawke just can't resist her and so he follows where she leads.
I really enjoyed this book and I would absolutely read it again. I also really hope that the Sons get their own books now that we have read all of the Assassins' stories.
I love Samantha Whiskey and I especially love her Onyx Assassins series. Crimson Kiss has been the one I've been waiting for. I knew I was going to love Hawke & Avi. I literally dropped everything when I got a text saying this was live. I really enjoyed the storyline as it began where the Crimson Truth left off. I did not see the plot twist at the end coming AT ALL. My only issue with this story is that Hawke & Avi were too much like Samantha Whiskey's characters Cannon and Persephone in Cannon. Cannon is my ultimate favorite of hers and I felt like I was reading their story during certain parts. Granted the characters had many similarities to begin with, but there was one particular scene which was pretty much the same as in Cannon. Anyway, I can't wait until the next book. I'm hoping Xavier and Daphne. I guess we shall see!
I mean COME ON!!! Of course Hawke’s would get a 5 star review!! Every book has built up anticipation for this one. At least it had for me.
Avianna’s character unraveling was perfect. I adored her character and her personal revelations. She’s definitely someone you want as your friend.
But Hawke….sweet baby Jesus. Yes. A million times YES!!! Thank you for this, Samantha. (After all we have been through together…I feel we are now on a first name basis.) You didn’t disappoint. A lot of his personality traits would be red flags in real life, but this…this is my literary world and there are no limits. No lines to be crossed. He is perfect in all of his imperfections.
Again, I am pissed this isn’t my reality…and yet, a little relieved.
Can there be an Xavier one now?? That would be entertaining!!!
Samantha Whiskey has done it again! Every book in this series is somehow better than the last one, which is a testament to Whiskey’s talent and the fantastic fictional world that she has built. I have eagerly awaited Hawke and Avi’s story ever since we were introduced to them in the first novel, so my expectations were already sky high before I began “Crimson Kiss.” So you can imagine my delight when I discovered that Avi and Hawke’s journey was even better than I had hoped for. Avi is strong, smart, fierce, and incredibly brave, and even though Hawke might seem like her opposite at first glance, they are actually very similar and perfect for each other. I don’t want to leave this world that Whiskey has created, so I really hope that there will be another book in the series, especially for Daphne and the demon king Xavier, who seems adorably smitten with the young human.
Crimson Kiss has had the tension building between these two characters right from the very start. Hawke and Avi's story was so worth the wait and every bit of anxiety that they have put us through. Secrets are revealed, boundaries are pushed and a connection that has been pushed deep down comes bubbling to the surface with such a ferocity it will knock you off your feet. The chemistry that crackles between these two jumps off the pages and has you feeling it deep under your own skin. Their is drama, suspense and mayhem that will have you addicted and unable to put this book down. The passion and emotions that this story evokes from you are intense and breathtaking. Some revelations in their story will shock you to the core and have you eager for the next addition to this series.
I couldn't wait for Hawke and Avianna. I wondered how their dynamics would play out and wow, who knew that Avi had a kinky side. Little Miss Royal Princess isn't as prim and proper as she would lead us to believe.
In the last book Avianna had gotten kidnapped and refused to leave when given the chance. Why? And then when she was able and willing to go home, she wouldn't talk. Ugh! This just about drove Hawke nuts. And then we find out why.
I just loved these two together even though Hawke thought that Avi was way too good for him, being royalty and all.
The fighting scenes were wicked and the sexy times..............whew, Steamy!!
Oh my goodness, where do I start! I’ve been waiting on Hawk & Avi’s story for ages, and it did not disappoint. PNR is not my thing but Samantha has managed to get me loving this series. Hawk & Avi have been my favourite couple for a while, although I’ve loved all of them at the time of reading. I don’t want to give too much away but Samuel, Saint & James want to get a chance at the throne and Avianna is their in. Alek is a fab vampire king and Avi is loyal, fierce and loving towards her brother & his queen. She’ll do anything to save them, even if it means marrying someone else. It’s an angsty, emotional rollercoaster of a book and my book of the year so far! This is the best series I’ve read for a long time.
YES! I knew it! No spoilers in any way but I knew from book 1 these 2 were meant to be together. Avi has gone her whole life wearing gloves to prevent anyone from forcing their mark on her. Hawke is a protector of hers and an assassin, he knew he doesn't deserve Avi and that she deserves more. This is a wonderful tale of friends who've never really been just friends finally realizing they are so much more to each other than what they have thought. It's got so much action and a surprise twist that I didn't see coming. I loved this book, it was emotional at a few parts but it was beautifully written. Steamy, action packed, grumpy brooding male, strong but loving female, another homerun from Samantha Whiskey.
Hawke has always been in love with Princess Avianna, but he won’t tell her because he’s just one of the assassins and far beneath her in rank. She’s going to marry Samuel to save the crown and end the divisions between the vampires. But everything changes when Hawke finds out that she is his mate, and she is going to marry someone else.
You need to take all your thoughts about vampires and throw them out because Samantha Whiskey has changed it all up because there are vampires, demons, witches, and all sorts of others that live among us.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another great addition to the series, I loved to finally see Avi and Hawke get together. I have to admit that there were many times I wanted to slap some sense into both of them. Hawke didn't think he was high blood enough for Avi, who is the princess. Avi felt the need to sacrifice herself to stop a war. I wished that their relationship evolved way faster and they spent more time trying to figure out an inventive way to get out of the mess rather than just counting down the time to D- day.
That said, this was well written, the characters were compelling, and I'm chomping at the bit for the next installment of this story!
Great end to the series but with the possibility of more.
Written in dual first person POV. Good amount of sexy times and humor (Chad! Seriously cracked up at that.). This book had more feelings than some of the others - needed at least one tissue. The book ends with a HFN/HEA (immortality makes HEAs hard) but does allow for the possibility to follow some minor characters in a new spin-off series.
There were a couple of pet peeves regarding continuity and ages that annoyed me but overall I’m glad that I read the book. I would suggest starting with book 1 of this series and reading in order but the author does try to allow each book to be a standalone.
This book was everything I was hoping for! I've been hanging on waiting for Hawke and Avi's book from the very beginning of the series! The chemistry between these two characters was off the charts! Hawke and Avianna have always been drawn to each other and I'm so happy they were finally able to give in. They are both protectors and now they have someone who will protect them and put them first no matter what.
It was great to get a glimpse into the lives of the characters from the previous books.
I'm hoping there will be more books in this world!
If I had to objectively rate this, it would be a 4, maybe even leaning towards a 3. But this gets a full five stars based on my reading experience.
SO. MUCH. ANGST. This was everything I wanted. I've been anxiously awaiting Hawke and Avi's story practically since the first of this series and was not disappointed. Honestly, I had so much fun with this.
Plus, this came out on a day that I was dealing with a chronic pain flare, so getting to curl up in bed with heating pads and this book was the perfect medicine.
This is a hot, hot, hot addition to this vampire series!
Hawke and Arianna have wanted each other for years. He is a soldier, and she is the princess. If you’ve been reading this series, you know she always wears gloves. She takes off her gloves and reveals what she’s been hiding underneath them. Hawke thinks he not good enough for her, but Arianna doesn’t agree. Lot’s of action and mystery with a great twist at the end! Samantha Whiskey is a great, great writer. Each book gets better than the next. I’m hoping there’s more books coming to this series.
Perfect together! Hawke and Avianna always had a strained relationship and it doesn’t help that she is keeping a big secret. When she finds herself kidnapped, she does the only thing she knew would save those she loved. As her secrets are revealed, Hawke does what he promised he wouldn’t. And what happens next was so mesmerizing, delightful and so steamy. I loved all the action, danger and glorious heat level between Hawke and Avianna. Their journey seemed impossible but the wait was so worth their HEA.
