“This story contains traces of Whispering Snakes, Euphemia Vile, and the most frightening of all, self-doubt. This story may cause panic, spontaneous tears and general discomfort. Just know that I am here – and what you choose to do next is up to you. But I hope with all my heart that you follow me down this rabbit hole ’cause: Here. We. Go.”

My thanks to Guppy Books for a review copy via NetGalley of ‘Ghost Scouts: Mayhem at Camp Croak’ written and illustrated by Taylor Dolan.

This is Book 4 in Dolan’s Ghost Scouts series that follows the adventures of Lexie Wilde and her ghoulish friends at Camp Croak located deep in the Louisiana swamps.

After an enjoyable evening telling spooky tales around the campfire snacking on roach-mallow s’mores, the Camp Croak campers are looking forward to earning more badges. Then a group of smarmy scouts from Happy Hollow Camp for Joyful Boys and Girls arrive and issue an ancient challenge: the Right to Battle.

They soon discover that the dastardly Euphemia Vile has become the new Scoutmaster of Happy Hollow Camp. If the Ghost Scouts lose the battle, Camp Croak will become the property of Happy Hollow. No prizes for guessing Euphemia Vile’s evil plans if her campers win.

In order to save their beloved camp, Lexie and the Ghost Scouts must summon their courage and use all their skills. However, no one is prepared for the appearance of the malicious whispering snakes!

I have now read all of the Ghost Scouts books loving Lexie and pals adventures. I especially enjoy Taylor Dolan’s quirky Gothic illustrations that combine the cute with the macabre.

All of the books contain positive messages about acceptance and friendship. As the opening statement quoted above indicates, ‘Mayhem at Camp Croak’ also deals with a serious subject though unfortunately one that does affect children in the book’s recommended age group of 6-9 years.

I expect that Taylor Dolan also wanted to give a heads up to parents and guardians of the subject matter contained within, allowing them the opportunity to discuss issues that might arise related to self-doubt. The whispering snakes are a handy metaphor.

Overall, I found ‘Ghost Scouts: Mayhem at Camp Croak’ a great deal of fun with an underlying positive message. A treat for both young readers and those of any age who enjoy playful spooky tales.

Highly recommended book and series.

Thank you so much to Guppy Books and NetGalley for the ebook to read and review.

Camp croak face Vile yet again as this time she sends in her Happy campers to start a battle and steal the camp. The humans and the monsters start off battling but eventually find they have a bigger common enemy.

This was really great, really funny and I enjoyed seeing the new characters joining the camp and the strange little battles against each other. I really loved that we got to see that these camp croak campers are super sweet and kind to anyone and they were willing to help make them feel better. Those snakes were creepy and very evil, but they all helped each other out and it was great.

It was hilarious how they all joined together and to finally rid themselves of Vile and actually get to enjoy the camp together. I would have loved to have had another story after this of the Happy Campers and Camp Croak somehow joining as one. Seeing the humans doing the camp stuff the others do.

I really loved the color tones on the pages and illustration in this one, such a pretty color, I also really enjoyed seeing the story and the characters on each page. This was a really funny and enjoyable read, it’s got a darker humour than some for this age group but is still very funny and an enjoyable easy read.

Lexie Wilde and her Ghost Scouts friends and even their enemies, made me smile and giggle and I really enjoyed the creepiness but also the many sweet and heartwarming moments, the important messages and the fun illustrations in this little book!

Just look at that cover, what can be created with just a few well chosen colors and a heap of talent, I love it!

This book begins with telling stories at a bonfire and what a story Lexie tells!! Brilliant, chocking and funny. After that, our creepy campers have so much fun getting different kinds off badges until..

They are soon caught up in an exciting battle with another camp, with high stakes, consisting of different tasks to complete but is the other camp even playing fair? And is it their fault? I think you can guess who’s behind all this!

I loved the way they eventually got their badges and of course the important message around self-doubt and taking care of your mental health. How this message was conveyed was incredibly creative, sweet and fun!

I had the best time reading this book and I think many little readers will too! The perfect spooky read. Creepy, funny, quirky, sweet and empowering.

Thank you so much Guppy Books and NetGalley, for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.

A wonderful addition to the series. Fantastic illustrations which create a distinct world. As with previous books in this series Dolan perfects mixing a fun story with important messaging on how to be the best you, you can be! The campers take on self-care as well as the reoccurring villain Scoutmaster Vile.

This was loads of fun and gorgeously illustrated!
Snakes who whisper insults?
Learning to big yourself up?
Realising that it’s better to be kind?
Love all of these messages! These books are cute and fun and I’m keen to read more!
