Steel & Thunder #3

Secrets & Spires

Rate this book
Khazak has been feeling a little lost lately.

By the age of thirty, he'd become the youngest Ranger Captain in his city's history. He thought he had the rest of his life figured out, until he was betrayed by people he trusted and was forced to resign. The one bright spot is David, his human lover and former captive (though "former" doesn't always apply in the bedroom). After coming so close to losing him, Khazak didn't think twice about leaving everything behind to follow him. Things are still new, but they have all the time in the world for David to grow comfortable with their relationship.

David's having a rough time himself. After miraculously surviving a deadly attack, he's left looking for answers and seeking revenge on those responsible. His search brings him to the city of Pákannon, and he's not alone: not only is his entire team behind him, he has Khazak, the orc who loves him and once owned him (and technically, still does). Just as he's getting used to the idea of people knowing they're together, someone from his past shows up and threatens all of his progress in that area. Lucky for him, a side-quest to a mysterious city in the mountains should be exactly the distraction he needs. It's not like anything bad or dangerous could happen, right?

This is a book filled with action, comedy, tent sex, giant snakes, and ghost stories! Read the next chapter of Khazak & David's story and join them as they explore the magical world they inhabit. Readers of gay/male-on-male romances that feature kinky power-exchange relationships, BDSM, and Dom/sub elements: this book is for you!

I knew it. Going in, Addam was going to be an issue. But how dare you defame the descriptor of "Himbo"?

So what, I just learned the term. A man that worships muscle, drinks protein to maintain his body and is the sweetest guy one could ever know. So sugary sweet yet protective! You sir should be aware of this. If not, I hope you are now!

Next! Book one they trespassed on sacred lands. Their bag, but the temple door was open. Book 2 one must suffer the consequences. Just didn't know being Pile drived on the regular. Was on the menu. Along with, "It ain't fun if the homies can't have none."

Yes I chose to keep reading. The mystery of the cult. I need to know why!

Book three was suppose to give the answers. But they end up doing a side quest. Why! Well twin brother popped in.

Yes! It's only been 2 months. You were given a semi-safe space to explore being dominated. You got to learn about a culture hidden among a mine and elven ruins. But with people you know. They just brushing off this new you. Except for Adam! Those long looks. That trip to relieve the dragon and find you two up against a tree. That was weird!

Then it all came out! Coming back from the dead. Having a boyfriend, is what bro couldn't get over. Because you dated girls.

I'm kind of getting tired of these tropes. Not everyone comes out the womb, knowing their favorite flavor. Some have to try everything. Others have to be in the mood.

It took one misplaced phrasing. Of him needing space for you. His man to jack it with his bestie. Really!

Have you ever been so outraged. That you threw your kindle. Was aiming for the trash. Before remembering its not a book. But a few hundred bucks you just tossed. Just for your headphones, to save the day. As the kindle lands safely onto the bed.

If it wasn't for audibles sale. I wouldn't have purchased all the books.

I'm not into BDSM or sharing/poly-relationshios but Secret and Spires and the Steel and Thunder series is making me change my mind for reading this trope in the mm fiction genre!

Or perhaps it's just that amazing talent of the author, Dominic Ashen, who's able to write an incredible story and riveting plot with deep characters and able to skillfully-weave BDSM and sharing/poly relationships.

If you're like me, who loves fantasy and paranormal but is not into BDSM or poly relationships, I must ask you to give this series a chance. Most BDSM books I've read in the past, were either boring or didn't have the well-developed plot or well-written characters.

The Steel and Thunder series has everything that makes a worthy story!.

ALLLLL the love for this series! Highly imaginative, great world building and high fantasy feel, and great chemistry between our two leads, David and Khazak, and all their friends they play with :D

I absolutely love how Khazak and David continue to grow and their relationship deepen in this series. David is still a brat, and still acts before he thinks, but I love him. I also love that in this book, we got a book from Khazak's POV this time. It's so great to see what he's thinking and see his side of things.

This is definitely an under appreciated gem of a read - if you're looking for fantasy with orcs and elves, daddy orc Khazak, a very D&D/WoW feel to the questing and action, and romance and steam, then you definitely need to check out this series. Read in order as each book builds on the previous one.

The fourth book comes out next week, so get to reading!

I started the Steel & Thunder series on a whim, admittedly with some trepidation, and I'm really glad I did. My affinity for orcs and "trashy" romance novels (a term of endearment) led me here. Once on board I found myself drawn into a richly detailed fantasy world inhabited by characters that I have grown to love, and a story that is equal parts engrossing, mysterious, thrilling, funny, and sexy.

David is a human who has left his former life in search of adventure. When he and his friends are caught trespassing, his impulsive attempt to exploit a legal loophole causes him to become the property of a handsome orc. Amid the backdrop of an advanced, sexually liberated society, David learns much about himself as he falls for Khazak, his captor. The pair uncover a destructive conspiracy that upends normal life in the city, narrowly escaping death in the process (though it's a bit more complicated than that).

In this third installment, David and his friends set out from the city to determine what exactly happened Khazak joins them, leaving his old life behind when it becomes clear that he can't bear to be without David. Their quest takes them to the city of Pákannon, where an encounter with someone from David's past leads to an unplanned adventure that tests the limits of his relationship with Khazak.

The first two books are in David's voice, here we get to experience things from Khazak's point of view. His love and concern for David is plainly evident throughout the series, but hearing his internal monologue brings a new depth to their story. Beneath his dominant personality, we see a kind, intelligent, and often vulnerable person. Ashen treats us to small vignettes of conversations and events we didn't get to witness in the earlier novels, giving us insight into Khazak's thoughts and actions. Over the course of the book, we get to see David and Khazak grow tremendously as individuals, and as a couple.

As a reader who doesn't identify with the kinks that play a large role in David and Khazak's relationship, getting to know the thoughts and feelings of these two characters has given me a better understanding of what drives the exploration of power dynamics for many people. I really appreciate this, in the past I have been judgmental about this kind of sexual expression. While you won't find me clamoring to get a chastity cage any time soon, I'll definitely be broadening my horizons after spending quality time with these stories. Not gonna lie: the sex is hot, and readers of the previous books will very much appreciate the characters who come along for the ride.

As this book takes us beyond the walls of V’rok’sh Tah’lj, Ashen's remarkable world building prowess is again on full display. Pákannon and its environs are brought to life in vivid detail. Little things alluded to throughout seem as if they might be important later on in the series. The characters, old and new, feel remarkably real. You will love them, you will empathize with them, you will be annoyed by them. They will make you feel.

There are a few moments where eagle-eyed readers will predict an outcome, but this doesn't detract from the experience as a whole. At certain points, detailed discussions of magical concepts caused this novice fantasy reader's eyes to glaze over, but it's clear that much thought was put into making things seem plausible and coherent.

I thoroughly enjoy Ashen's style. His world is decidedly anachronistic: the setting is medieval, yet characters use modern slang frequently to comedic effect (Spoiler alert: ). Present-day luxuries exist through analogues powered by magical enchantment, so our characters can enjoy things like indoor plumbing, video calling, and convenient preparation for sexual activity. This aspect of the storytelling may be off putting to purists, but for me it makes things accessible and certainly more fun.

I think I can officially declare myself a Steel & Thunder fanboy. Secrets & Spires is a wonderful addition to the series and well worth a read. I lost plenty of sleep and did a terrible job at work over the past few days simply because I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see where their journey leads next.

The previous book was all hot and spicy often org*es so I was expecting the same or even more here but instead I got a lot of communication, mysteries, introduction to new characters, and just fun.
I'm very curious about the next book!

2.5 stars. This book was a disappointment to me after the first two books in the series. While the previous books did a good job balancing the fantasy plot elements with the romance and erotica, I felt that this one failed in that regard. It mostly just felt like I was reading about someone else's D&D campaign, and not a very interesting one at that. With a new setting and lots of new party members, traveling, and questing, there was much less focus on David and Khazak's relationship and less interactions between them in general. There was finally some relationship and erotica focus at the end, but it felt awkwardly tacked on rather than integrated into the story, and by then I was just kind of over it. The adventure plot didn't really capture my interest, and adding so many new characters when the reader doesn't even know David's party members that well yet made the characterization outside of David and Khazak feel pretty shallow. I struggled to finish this one, but carried on since I do still love David and Khazak.

Another absolutely spectacular book with our favourite Orc and bratty human. I seriously adore Khazak & David so much. Khazak so serious and David impulsive and a bit reckless (how many times do I want to shake him 🤣) are a perfect match. With each book I wonder what trouble these two could possibly get themselves into next.

I think this one may be my favourite of the three. This was packed FULL of action and fantasy, some fun Greek mythology, new unexpected characters, cute little wolf pup and a terrifying ghoul.

I’m so looking forward to starting book 4 to see the mischief (and sexy times 😏) these two get up to.

Khazak and David are one of my favorite fantasy world romances! I was drawn to them due to the stunning covers! In this third book we finally get really know Khazak as this part of the story has his POV! I could always feel how much he cared for and loved David but getting to hear his internal thoughts directly really brought to life all his emotions and need to be with David! This is adventure full of love and relationships and a whole lot of sexy, kinky times. The BDSM actually blends into this world and enhances the type of relationship Khazak and David have! I recommend you start at book one and jump into this fun adventurous world with David and big Orc!

I have loved Steel & Thunder from the start. The story of Khazak and David is funny, unique, and impactful (hehe). Dominic has a way of keeping the reader engaged with the story while adding delicious bits of kink and erotic scenes without distracting from the overall plot. While this book was very different from the previous two in the series, the author really captured the complexities of the main characters and furthered their love. Khazak and David do not have a normal love story, by any means, and I think this book did a great job capturing their unique love in a witty, yet compelling, way. I simply couldn’t put this book down, in fact when it was released, I stopped reading another book just to give this one my full attention! Looking forward to the continuation of one of my favorite stories in the near future! Soon, I hope!

Different than the first two books

I had moments of frustration and had to put the story away. Main issue was the introduction of a character I felt was too soon at first but later accepted. Other head scratcher was the new character's really quick acceptance of the protagonists relationship with each other. I was expecting more major friction with at least one on that aspect. Other than that great read. Looking forward to the next book.

This series is imaginative and interesting and hot and funny and sometimes sweet too— it pretty much has it all. An orc, a human, a backdrop of adventure and intrigue and kink— there’s something for everyone here. I love, too, how deeply realized the characters are as individuals. It’s nice to see the focus on Khazak also— knowing more about his feelings and motivations gave me even more reasons to invest in him and David. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story— fantasy, romance, or otherwise, that blends the specific elements in the specific ways this one does, and hats off the author for melding a lot of seemingly disparate elements into a great premise and a compelling read. I’d happily follow these characters through many adventures (of all varieties) to come.

Having just read the first two books, which are told from entirely from David's POV I was so pleasantly surprised to find that this book is in Khazak's POV.
I feel like having a book with his POV really only adds even more depth to Khazak's character that we may have missed from previous books.
I feel the author did a great job taking an already complex world and adding these extra layers and building it well throughout this one and I cannot wait to read more.
I loved the new characters that were added though this book while not forgetting the original characters we started with.

I did have one small sticking point but in the end was eventually able to get over it and still give it a full five starts.

If you haven't already definitely read these books.

Even though this is the third book in this series, it is the first one for me. I loved it and even though this book explained somewhat what happened in the other two, I want to go back and read everything about their journey. Knapsack and David are with a group of friends continue to an Elven city where they run into David's twin brother and two others with him. This story has so much happening. At times it's filled with fighting, spells, a ghost, a huge snake, a threesome.... lots is spankings, and a magic sex toy. There's secrets, a city that was destroyed many years ago that holds crystals that the travelers need, amazing characters and this whole story has me wanting to read the next book!

Love reading Khazak and David. But I started all backwards I didn’t know it was a continuous series so now I have to go back and start their story from the beginning but if they are good as this one I’m sure I wouldn’t be disappointed.

This is the third book in the series and it gives us good insight into the evolution of the relationship between David, the human and Khazak the orc who owned him initially and technically still kind of does but who has come to love him. This story goes a long way in showing how connection over time can change the dynamic in a relationship which is so cool. It also gives us the next installment in their story from Khazak's perspective which is helpful. This is such an intriguing series with lots of steam but also lots of emotion and some intrigue.

As soon as I spotted this I knew I had to read it. I fell in love with orc romance last year and can't get enough of them. The opportunity to read a m/m orc romance was very exciting. Great world building. This is the first book I've read by this author and in this series. I'm sure there were things that completely went over my head since I didn't read the first two books, but I really enjoyed this. It was a fun (and dangerous) adventure in a medieval yet somewhat modern (modern luxuries) setting. David and Khazak have great chemistry and you can feel the love between them. I would read more from this author. 4 stars.

This is definitely my kind of book, in fact it's the best of two worlds spicy kink and fantasy all rolled into one.
Khazak, seemed to have it all, until he didn't.
However he wasn't going to let things like that keep him down... Nope...
Not with a world of endless possibilities and the best partner by his side.

I'm not really sure how to categorize this read. Campy orc-human love story? No, that sounds belittling, but at it's heart that is a major aspect. The story has strong tones of eroticism and BDSM/Dom-Sub/Power exchange dynamics. It also has action, adventure, betrayal, and humor in an anachronistic back-drop of medieval times mixed with modern world conveniences (think running water). The world-building is detailed and the characters are fully developed, not caricatures. If you are looking for a fun read that is a little different from what you may be used to, I recommend giving this one a try. I am interested in reading more about Khazak and David.

The perfect follow up to the previous book

I liked that this book focused heavily on Khazak and David healing from the events in the Temple of Zeus. They are building a strong foundation for their relationship by learning to trust and rely on each other.

Why did Khazak never ask around about the black clad men? Will that come back to bite them later? How will the dynamic of the group change now with Michael? How will things change with Adam?

I loved Secrets & Spires by Dominic N. Ashen. It's the third book in the Steel & Thunder series. I loved Khazak and David's book. The pace of this book seemed to be a little bit slower in parts, but I loved the addition to the party and how they freed the Woman in White. I can't wait to read the fourth book when it comes out.

I’m not even sure why but I didn’t feel this one as much as I felt the others…

I think the whole expedition to find the crystals and whatever was just stuff to fill up the book that in a general scheme had nothing to do with the main plot.

But I did enjoy it specially the parts centered in their romance, which is why I’m here for, let’s be honest.

I continue to enjoy the adventures of Kazaak and David. This one being from the Big man himself was a nice change of pace since we could get into his head more. Really enjoyed the inclusion of new team members in the bed and on the journey too <3!

Still sexy and still filled with adventure woop woop!

Another strong book in this series, this one from Khazak's perspective! It's interesting to get a new view on things, especially since the previous books were from the same point of view. This book brings back the miscommunication trope that I'm not fond of, but it's used as less of a romantic device and more platonic. I love the change of setting and the added interest of another character in the main romance, but I will admit to missing some of the supporting cast from the other books. Also, while the book has plenty of action-y moments, the plot of this book feels a little weak. It's more a slice out of the characters's travels, and except for some key moments and new characters, it is generally unnecessary. Overall, it's still a fun read and if you like the other books, you'll enjoy this one as well.

Netflix worthy

This series is so incredible, and this book is no exception! Fantasy, adventure, friendship, romance, sex… it has it all. I would not be surprised in the slightest if Netflix took on the challenge to recreate this on the screen. If you’re looking for you next obsession, look no further.

Another fantastic read and cannot put these books down once I start. What I loved about this book was David's continued character growth and acceptance of who he is as a person. Loved seeing David finally be brave enough to come out to his twin brother and be proud of who he is. The fantasy/sci fi aspects of it were wonderful too with giant snakes and ghosts. A fun, fluffy read.

This book is a great start to a new story arc that sees David, Davids Teammates and Khazak taking to the road in search of answers after the intense events that finished off the previous book.

I was curious how the story would transition into this new setting as the first two books followed David as he stays within a singular setting surrounded by new people but I was pleasently surprised with just how much this book succeded.

The first major thing to point out is that this book (for all but one chapter) follows Khazak's POV. Khazak is a character we have gotten to know (very intimately I might add) in the past two books but we have never gotten to see how he processes his thoughts and feelings.

Khazak being a more stoic and (no shade to David) Intelligent figure makes the switch up between this book and the previous a very fun one to read. Reading Khazak's thooughts on the world and his new companions, aswell of the cultural differences he encounters when some intense interpersonal drama stirs within the group makes this a book I was quite often thinking about when I wasn't reading it.

The sex is slightly less prevelant in this book but as someone who first found this series because it was "the gay orc BDSM book" I was actually very surprised that not only was I not left dissapointed, I actually thought it added to the story this book was telling. There is alot of anticipation and what I call "wink wink nudge nudgeing" in this book so that when the sex scenes do happen it actually has a slight impact as the wait (due to all the drama and chaos happening in this, which is alot) makes the end result worth it.

This is an amazing continuation of the series that takes the relationship and dynamic between David and Khazak and throws it into the wide open fantasy world that the author is writing and Im very excited to see where this series takes us next.

Book three! Oh, no! Is this going to be the grand finale? It is the third book of a Fantasy series, so... is this a trilogy or something longer?

Well, I'll answer those questions first. It appears the first two books are something of a duology, both from David's perspective. Now, this one's from Khazak's and I suspect the next will be as well. Don't get me, wrong. It's all one big story, in episodes. Just like a comic book. [I'd love to see this series get a graphic novel adaption.] And I'm willing to bet that there's more to come. Or, at least, that's what I am hoping!

I'm a huge fan of Dominic N. Ashen. I devoured the first two books within 36 hours. I just couldn't put them down. When I was done, I realized I'd found two of the best books I've ever read. I've read a ton of Fantasy as I've been reading it since the 1970s. I've even gone back and re-read books one and two, twice! Plus, I've heard the audiobooks too. [Also, highly recommended!] As I've said previously, there are very few books that I've gone through three times.

Mr. Ashen had a winning formula: A fully-realized Fantasy world peopled with a broad cast of characters I fell in love with. Ragnar. Nylan. Brull. Khazak's three dads. Adam. Liss. There is propulsive pacing and plotting. A pair of MM romantic leads I cared deeply about. And, some of the hottest sex scenes I've ever come across, which included light BDSM (Yay!).

It all fit my tastes to a T. I am a huge fan of Orcs. For some reason, they just really turn me on. I've read just about every Orc/Human MM erotica story I can get my hands on. So, yes, I am a connoisseur of gay orc fiction. Ashen's books are absolutely the pinnacle of this sub-genre. The next best competitor doesn't even come close.

But with book three, he's thrown a wrench into my perfect formula. David is no longer the lead point of view character! [#$%@#!] They've left the orc city and the orc culture behind! [Curses, again!] He's added a bunch of straight people to the cast. Damnit, this book is just going to suck. I just know it.

I love Khazak. I fell head over heels in love with the orc. But as the new point of view lead? Can he really replace David? I had serious doubts. There's just no way he can be as funny or as interesting as my beloved endearing and hilarious David.

I'm very happy to say, that my misgivings were way off-base. I was utterly and completely wrong!

I love Secrets & Spires every bit as much as I loved the first two books. And I can't wait to see where book four will take us. (Please, tell me there's going to be a book four, Mr. Ashen.)

Khazak is a very entertaining lead and it deepens the reading experience to see things from his point of view. His life has had a major shake-up. After the big conclusion to book two, he gives up everything he has ever known to be with the love of his life. He's good with that decision and makes the best of it. That, in fact, made me love him all the more.

His life, and David's, is thrown into a difficult situation by the appearance of some new characters and new situations. It's fascinating, exciting, and fun. And very funny. Though the author has greatly changed everything up, all the parts still work together perfectly. This author has now completely won my trust and I will now follow him wherever he leads me.

Mr. Ashen's skill as a writer broadens and improves with every new publication and I am beyond delighted with the results.

This is a fantasy series that works beautifully from the painted cover (best one yet) to the map (which you'll find in the hardcover of book one), to the ongoing episodic story-telling, to the romance and the sex and the adventure and the characters and the pacing.

I just cannot recommend this sweet book, and the whole series, highly enough. Even if BDSM is not your thing, you'll find plenty to love in Mr. Ashen's brilliantly realized creation. By the ending, you'll be anticipating the author's next release, just as much as I am. There's some great gay genre fiction being made these days (something I've waited my whole life for) and Mr. Ashen is solidly one of the best. Trust me. You will love these books.

Secrets Get in the Way
David survived a deadly attack and now wants answers. He and his team leave to go and find those answers. Others join them unexpectedly and it is all David can do to keep his secrets - having died and come back to life and his relationship with Khazan. Their quest takes them to an abandoned city in the mountains. They contend with a giant snake and a ghost and eventually the truths David is concealing.
I enjoyed the story and the group’s travels and the obstacles they faced. But I was a little distracted from the story with all the drama of David trying to hide secrets that were really just something he should have dealt with. This lack of communication and the issues that followed didn’t really add to the story and I felt that if David had just come clean there could have been more time dealt with the snake and the ghost.
The characters are great but in this story a few of them just grated on my nerves
