As the third book in the Paladin's Assistant series, Seaside Lessons now sees John and Edmund as familiar characters. The storyline of this book is separate from the previous two and does not require having read them first, although I did find that I probably got most out of this book by knowing them. Much of the appeal goes into spending time with noble youth Edmund much grown since his introduction in Forest Lessons, but not quite done taking more life lessons from the older and wiser paladin John.

At the same time, the mystery of the murders in Levale of both church and military officials digs deeper into the world the Paladin's Assistant takes place in and the underlying conflicts that the reader, alongside Edmund, is becoming increasingly aware of.

Overall Seaside Lessons was another satisfying read and although the series finds a sort of ending here, one can always hope it is revisited in the future. There is plenty more background to delve in, be it through these characters or new ones.

The last of the Paladin’s Assistant series that the author has plans for at this time, which is a shame. There’s so much backstory and strangeness in the world that we haven’t gotten to see yet.
