I absolutely SAVOURED this last book.
There will be quite a few spoilers in this review because I simply cannot move on with my life without gushing and ranting about the things that just made this book the masterpiece that it is.
I have to start by saying that this is by far one of the best series I have read this year and quite honestly, one of my favorite RH series I've gotten the pleasure of reading to date.
I have SO FUCKING MUCH I need to say and so many favourite quotes to share, especially considering the wonderful length of this novel, so here we go...
"Because happily ever after always tastes sweetest when it's been earned through agony"
The events of this story took me on an emotional journey that creates such a brilliant reading experience. I honestly can't count the number of times throughout this series where I sat thinking about how amazing the writing in these books are; the intimate connection you feel to Elise, Gareth, and the four guys, the staggered relationship development, the unpredictable and twisted plot, and the whirlwind of emotions you feel as you go through it, all come together in an utterly stunning and undoubtedly unforgettable series.
Initial thoughts,
Starting from where we left off in book 4, Elise is captured and I swooned over how the guys worked in tandem to relocate and rescue her; Ryder reluctantly giving into Leon’s taunts and working alongside his astral adversary, with small moments of acceptance if not appreciation for them.
I'm in love with their bromance and obsessed with their dynamic of friendship; Leon is legit adorable and I lost it when he used his charisma on the guys and they were caring for him, that was such a pure but hilarious moment.
"Dante got my belt undone and Ryder yanked my jeans off, tossing them into the laundry basket. Dante gripped my shirt, tearing it over my head and smirking victoriously as he tossed that in the basket too. "I got you some hot milk."Gabriel walked into the room with my favorite mug"
BROMANCE. ACTIVATED.
Moving forward from this point, I totally thought it would take them longer to rescue Elise and at first, I was like UH.. she was found WAY too quickly for my tastes but after I finished the book and realized how much was compacted into this one story, then I completely understood the rush factor on that situation.
"All of me wanted her, down to the dust of the stars which made up my soul."
That's it.
This quote just touched my soul and I had to include it just to say how much I FELT this.
One moment that absolutely IRKED me to the core and triggered my anxiety, was when Ryder got captured and Gabriel kept trying to get a sight of him needing their help but Elise and Leon were not taking anything seriously.
Like, your boy needs you and obviously, something is trying to push through, how about stop fucking for like, 3 seconds to consider that maybe it’s important!
Every time Elise or Leon changed the subject to something juvenile I just got so irritated.
Hey, I would feel the same for any of the guys!
BUT RYDER, he's my husband so I'm like *knock, knock* HELLO!
In my head, I was screaming "This man would rip apart worlds for you and you can’t even care that something is coming through about him?!"; even Gabe had an inkling that it must be important.
"Ryder, I think," he muttered, "But there's too much lust too I can't concentrate to see it properly. You're too damn distracting."
"Maybe the stars are telling you to be rough with me like he is," I teased."
I truthfully couldn’t even enjoy reading that threeway because I was so consumed by my rage that they were all ignoring the urgency of the sight!
Moving on...
*Drum Roll*
OKAY. The moment(s) we have quite literally been waiting an eternity for finally happened!!
"The Bond has tested you and you were both found wanting. But now you stand as allies upon this hill, and we cannot ignore the question you ask of us... You ask for the bond to be changed."
The star-bond moment between Ryder and Dante was fucking everything and more.
It completely exceeded my expectations and brought me to ruin emotionally.
This moment marks the ultimate end to their series-long feud and I seriously commend the authors for drawing it out as long as they did; it made for some fucking phenomenal content, all the slow-build of affection towards each other, while they are supposed to be destined adversaries until one of them dies.
PERFECTION.
"He held his hand out to me to clasp and where our hands joined, the marks created an infinity symbol connecting us to one another. "Holy shit, Fratello. I think the stars just made us best friends."
AND THEN.
Directly following this show-stopping moment, as if my heart wasn't already dealing with enough, the stars CALL ELISE TO THEM.
OMFG. Yes!
Dante and Ryder finally get Elysian-mated to Elise and I internally had a meltdown of epic proportions because I’m so so unbelievably relieved and glad they decided to give them that moment with Elise; there is just no way in this fictional world that she didn't end up mated to them.
On that note, it was utterly fucking brilliant and a truly captivating reading experience the way it progressed with Leon first at the very beginning of this series.
JUST WOW.
It truly sucks you right in... Just like Elise's vag did to Ryder and Dante right after the formation of their star bonds
Come on.
That DVP!!
OK CAROLINE & SUSANNE, I REALLY SEE YOU.
Fucking *chefs kiss*.
End the book there.
I have to mention the scene with Gabe and Orion when he ate the Proballs and his dick enlarged to an unfathomable size. I live for these snippets of humor, they are written so well and never fail to make me double over laughing!
" Orion shot forward to catch me and as if in slow motion, my huge cock swung sideways and slapped him hard across the face."
HILARIOUS.
I lost all composure when Bianca accepted Ryder into the Oscura family.
I was eating breakfast while reading this part and my fiancé couldn’t comprehend why I burst out bawling my eyes out, as I simultaneously shoveled French toast and bacon into my mouth.
The emotional flood that this moment conjured out of me was entirely unexpected and 100% deserved.
I did NOT anticipate that level of welcome from her, towards him and it thawed my black, cold heart.
"You will not bleed in my home, nuovo figlio."
"Why'd you keep calling me that?"
"It means new son. The stars have bound you to my Drago which makes you mine too, you see? Nuovo figlio."
*cue instant ugly crying*
Ryder was blindsided by this but it was amazing to see him get that affection from a motherly figure, considering his tragic past.
I also loved that he tatted up Rosalie and gave her some words of wisdom like an older brother; that was an incredible bonding moment between them, especially given that she's Dante's cousin.
There's literally way too many funny moments to count; like when we find out that Leon had been sending Orion the Weekly Orgy; when Elise offered the Kipling's a doughnut and Middle Kipling LOST his shit, he absolutely did not approve "You can keep your carb filled whores, thank you very much,"; and also when they drugged themselves with killblaze the get into the cavern, I had to refrain from peeing my pants and I loved that it was from Dante's POV.
"Simba. Not Scar. Scar's a stronzooooo," he howled like a wolf. "I'm a stronzo." He hung his head and I dropped back to pat his arm.
"You're my stronzo," I whispered and he held my hand as we approached the tunnel ahead of us."
I LOVE BESTIE RYDER AND DANTE.
I also adore every single instance where Leon posts to Faebook and the Mindy's all respond in a thread; their comments and hashtags are an example of pure literary genius, in my opinion.
For instance, "@Erica Collins if you were naked in the woods, where were you keeping your Atlas to see this post??? #toomanyplotholes #theresonlyoneplacewithspace #Lionessessbecrazy"
So.
Like most, I'm sure, I came to really cherish Elise and Titan's unique relationship; it was precious and heartwarming, as he very much behaved as the father she never had. The fact that they both also acknowledge what they are to each other was so special.
Elise really needed someone like him in her life, especially because he was so supportive of her reconnecting with her real father but promised to stay in her life.
That WAS the perfect intimate moment between them...
Of course, that was IMMEDIATELY short-lived when his identity as fucking KING was revealed.
I originally went down the train of thought that somehow Gareth was corrupted and it was him this entire time but I soon realized how that would clearly assassinate his character and that did not make sense for him; so then, the thought of it being Titan had niggled into my brain but I dismissed it due to the nature of his relationship with Elise.
Looking back now, it doesn’t surprise me that the most inconspicuous person turned out to be the bad guy; however, I never would have thought that he was the culprit all along while going through the series.
So well-executed!
"My Hope. My Joy. My Mercy. My Duty. My Life.”
"All of the words are what each of you gave back to me.”
When I tell you I SOBBED like a newborn when Gabe and Ryder had a heart-to-heart before the death that Gabriel inevitably Saw for him; they shared their tats for each other (and the rest of the gang) it was such an emotion-packed moment, I could hardly keep it together let alone keep my eyes clear enough to get through it!
"You were always meant to be a part of my life, Ryder," I told him pointing to the mark below my ribs which I'd recently gotten for him.
Beneath the letter R were the words My Darkest Saviour.
My heart dropped right out of my chest at the same instant that Ryder got his HEAD chopped off.
I didn’t really think it would happen!!!!
Then again, I really shouldn’t be that shocked at this point in book 5; I should know by now that Susanne and Caroline are freaking CRUEL.
" "Long live the king!" Scarlett cried, swinging the axe with all her strength and the scream that escaped me was enough to tear the whole world apart and call the stars down from the sky as I watched Ryder's head tumble from his body."
I could NEVER cope with him truly being gone. I think I would lose my sanity at that point.
But I wasn't convinced he would come back from a decapitation but then we find out about the god damn SWITCHEROO, HELL YES.
Thank god, I couldn’t lose my basilisk!
Elise (and I) finally got some much-needed closure surrounding Gareth's death.
So... Gareth is actually dead!
I was questioning why the possibility that this pure and genuine soul was still alive waiting for his little angel, was even introduced!?
It's a depressing revelation and him being alive would have been an amazing twist in the book; genius, if he was actually able to pull off a fake death and keep himself concealed this entire time.
Alas, that was not the case.
*Cue face leaking*
I sobbed like a fucking child when Elise met him at the precipice of life and death.
Her first and last interaction with him in death and it absolutely stole the breath from my lungs and ripped my heart out in one instant.
"You have men who would tear the world apart for you and a future just waiting for you to claim it. You don't need me anymore."
"Be free, little angel. Live.
Of course, this story wouldn't be complete without Gabe getting his mate-bond with Elise. I'm so happy for him and I have to say, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders because I started to truly believe he had another mate somewhere out there. Needless to say, we didn't have to go clueless about that!
"And I knew in the depths of my soul that I would love this girl until there was nothing left of us but stardust and memories."
This book DESTROYED me and built me back up in the same breath.
I’m devastated that this amazing series has come to its end.
I have irrevocably and undeniably fallen in love with each and every single main character from these wonderful books.
"Family forged and family bound," the stars whispered..."A gift for a fractured soul, for cruel fates and crueler paths. When the world grows dark, look to each other to find the light."
I even have a major soft spot for some of the side characters like Roary, Bill, Reginald, and Bianca.
It’s truly bittersweet saying goodbye to them all but I know I will carry this story with me in my heart for a long while.
I laughed my ass off, I bawled my eyes out, and I smiled until my jaw hurt.
I hope this review conveys even a little of how incredible the reading experience is, which comes along with these beautiful books; it’s undoubtedly going into my all-time faves.
I'm virtually bowing at the feet of both Susanne and Caroline for not giving us a measly epilogue but for delivering us several chapters of BONUS content; as in, a jump in time to the future so we can experience what a normal life would be like for them after high school etc.
It was FUCKING INCREDIBLE.
I find we, as readers, rarely get a true glimpse of what happens at the end of many books once the plot is solved, it all kinda comes to an end.
But this book has fulfilled that desperate need for MORE.
Just knowing that they all got married to Elise and then moved in together, then had BABIES, plus the glimpse of 16 years into the future, how all the timelines were stacked, it was so heartwarming and quite literally THE BEST conclusion to a series that you never want to let go.
The scenes at the end with their kids when they are all grown up were so much fun to read! It felt like such a treat that we got that sneak peek into their lives; Luca emerges into a bear, so unexpected and I love that RJ is a pegasus.
It was utterly hilarious when the guys crashed her date when she was planning to lose the V.
10/10 best fucking scene ever. I love the guys as DADS. They are even more unbearable than I could ever imagine.
Side note: I foresee another series with RJ and her cop mate!! YAY, I'm calling that now.
I almost forgot about how we never learned the truth about Gabe's mysterious past but I'm getting the feeling I'll find out if I continue on with ZA, which I absolutely will.
"It is time, son of fate,...The questions of your origin will be answered. Follow the footprints of the past and you shall find all that you have lost."
I'm getting the vibe that this is an entire story in and of itself but I'm 100% here for it.
Now that we’ve gotten a glimpse ahead, I’m intrigued to see how the crossovers will be for the ZA and Rosalie's series'! Knowing Gabriel is working at ZA sweetens the deal too, as I'm hoping to see what role he has to play in their story.
On a final note (i'm shocked I haven't hit the word count yet), i’m so sad to leave behind this group of fictional people who have carved themselves a nice little hole in my heart, wherein they shall stay forevermore.
I'm also eternally grateful to the two incredibly talented and imaginative minds who conjured this absolute gem of a series.
~5 brilliant stars~
