Starfighter Origins #2

Raptor: Relics of the Ancients

Rate this book
Shipped off to Polar Prep Fleet Academy, Casey grieves the death of her mother while struggling to find a place among her peers.

She hates it. Why did her father have to send her away? It feels like he doesn't love her anymore.

With the memory of her mom festering like a raw wound, Casey's experience at school goes from bad to worse when she stands up to Renata Spector, the most popular girl in school.

People at Polar Prep are not what they seem, and the only one looking out for Casey is herself. To survive Renata's torments, and keep her fragile existence from tumbling down around her ears, Casey has to be braver than she's ever been.

Or risk losing herself altogether.

Raptor is a tale of becoming and bravery, of a young woman finding herself and learning the difference between right and wrong. This is a standalone novella in the Relics of the Ancients space opera universe about the formative years of one of the bravest starfighter pilots in the Solaran Fleet.

A necessary origins series to read. As prequels they give us a background of the characters in the main series with a broad perspective and insight to their previous lives. Highly recommended!

This is a great story. It delves into why Casey and Renate are at such odds. Even though Renate is a bully, Casey does her best to just make it though Polar Prep. Renate is definitely a hard character to like. We also find out why Casey decided to join the military. She never wanted that as a small child, but excels at it, as we found out in book 1. I highly recommend this series!

Must-read prequel, a good story!
This was a great story. We had encountered some of the characters in the main books of this series, but this is a prequel that works well as a standalone.
From the later books, we know that Casey has met Renata before and that they intensely dislike each other, and I don’t think that I am giving away any spoilers to say that this book gives us the information on where and how they meet, and what happens to cause such intense mutual dislike. As well as that, we get to learn a lot about Casey’s childhood and family, plus the origin of her ‘Raptor’ callsign.
For anyone who has read the main books of this series, this is a ‘must-read’. For anyone who likes good, well-written sci-fi, I thoroughly recommend this novella, I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Casey and Alia are friends, but Renata made it difficult while bullying them both. But then Casey get wise, as Alia said to her afterwards. And it spoke to me. Casey said, I quote from the book.
"I don't care about Renata or Mandi or Stellis anymore .. Bullies like them get off on the power they hold over you. But they only have power if you gibe it to them. I know the things they've done are wrong, but I'm not giving them that power over me anymore. They can beat me up and pull stupid pranks on me if they want to, but when i don't react they'll get bored and eventually they'll give up. From now on, I'm not even going to speak their names out loud."
