Jessica Lange was granted a scholarship from the University of Minnesota to study photography in 1967, but the vicissitudes of student life led her to Spain and Paris where she chose to put dramatic arts before practical photography Having left photography behind, Jessica Lange embarked on her acting career, playing leading parts in iconic movies and winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her roles in Tootsie, in 1983, and Blue Sky, in 1995. Not until later, at the beginning of the nineties, did Jessica Lange take up her photographic exploits again. Her images are captured on her travels and wanderings - her lens has roamed through countries such as the USA, France, Finland and Italy, although she has a particular soft spot for Mexico, as she herself puts it, "for its lights and wonderful nights". The accompanying catalogue for the exhibition, bringing together the collection of 80 photographs taken over the last 20 years, is arranged into two 'Things I see' and 'Mexico, On Scene' and represents a journey through Jessica Lange's diary of impressions.

Jessica Lange zal wel het meeste bekend staan voor haar rol in de remake van King Kong in 1976. Maar wat misschien minder gekend staat is dat Lange in 1967 een beurs om kunst en fotografie te studeren gekregen had voor de universiteit van Minnesota.
Unseen is een samenvatting van twintig jaar fotografie. Foto’s die Lange genomen tijdens haar reizen in Mexico en US.
Een boek gevuld met zwart-wit foto’s. Als men vraagt aan Lange wat er nu juist op de foto’s staat, antwoordt ze :Dingen die ik zie. Een boek onderverdeeld in twee stukken, elke keer voorzien van een verklarende tekst waarover elk deel gaat.
Jammer genoeg staat er geen begeleidende tekst bij de foto’s waardoor de visie van de fotografe niet altijd direct duidelijk is. Wat vooral opvalt, is dat er veel lege pagina’s in dit boek zitten. Veel witte pagina’s waar niet direct een duidelijke reden voor te vinden is.
Wat opvalt, is dat Lange wel op vele foto’s gebruikt maakt van lijnen. En vooral heeft ze er lak aan om ervoor te zorgen dat al haar lijnen recht staan. Iets wat in een fotografie opleiding aangeduid wordt als slordig werk maar hier eigenlijk wel past.
Er wordt veel gespeeld met contrast in de foto’s waar er soms zelfs voor gekozen is om tot tegen de overbelichting te werken. Maar dit komt altijd ten goede van de foto.
Conclusie
Een fotografe die toont dat ze niet enkel voor de camera haar rol kan spelen maar ook zelf met een fototoestel aan de slag kan. Misschien wat minder witte ruimte en wat meer begeleidende tekst om de visie van de fotografe over te brengen.

What is striking is that Lange does use lines in many photos. And above all, she doesn't care about making sure all her lines are straight. Something that is referred to as sloppy work in a photography course. But in some way it fits here.
A lot played with contrast in the photos, sometimes even opting to work against the overexposure. But this always benefits the photo.

A photographer who shows that she can not only play her part in front of the camera, but also work with a camera herself. Perhaps less white space and more accompanying text to convey the photographer's vision.
