How to Make People Laugh: Develop Confidence and Charisma, Master Improv Comedy, and Be More Witty with Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere

Rate this book
Want to learn how to make people laugh out loud? How to Make People Laugh is a book that targets regular comedians, such as you and me. It does not try to transform you into a professional comedian. Instead, it puts comedy in the spotlight of everyday life. With this book, you will learn techniques that you can easily incorporate at parties or even in regular banter with friends and colleagues.
How to Make People Laugh maintains its hold on wholesome family goodness. After all, you are trying to create not just a comedic persona but an overall persona. You want people to see you a certain way. Are you Hilarious Harry, Dad Joke Diego, Sarcastic Sharon, or Deadpan Dan? All of those are better than Offensive Oona, Dirty Joke Dean, and Literal Lisa.
This book will show you how to have a general sense of humor-or make full use of the one that you already have. After all, not all jokes are uproariously funny. Some can make you grin. Some can make you smile. So, if you start out making people smile, instead of making them laugh, you are on your way.
In How to Make People Laugh, you will - The science of charisma - How you can develop confidence and charisma - The role of body language in the equation - The role of personality in the types of jokes and delivery - Guidelines to great improv - Examples of possible improv responses - The value of thinking on your feet - Learning not to take yourself seriously - Using metaphors and definitions - Possible joke structures that you can follow - Examples for every joke style - Creating comedic personas with examples - And more!
This book has ample illustrations and examples to get you started. It can be difficult if you are trying to jump from the quiet wallflower to the center of attention. However, you should know that some of the most famous comedians are introverts, and their thoughtfulness and observational skills create the best insightful and truthful material. If you are an extrovert, on the other hand, then you have the set of skills to be the life of the party. What you need to do is to learn how to listen. Good improv requires excellent listening skills. How to Make People Laugh is a book for anyone who wants to make the world a happier place.

Hmmm… Charisma and Jokes??

I found it odd that a book about making people laugh would start off talking about charisma. I don't really understand, even after reading the book, how charisma is a factor in making people laugh. The main section of the book, though, about coming up with potentially humorous ideas to expand upon as you build jokes, was actually pretty decent. The author talked a lot about the audience and their expectations as well as how to construct a joke. The subtitle overstates that this book will help you “master improv’; there’s only a couple of chapters about improv humor. Other than the charisma part that I didn't really see tie into the rest of the book, I actually thought this was a fascinating read that helped me get a better sense of joke writing and situational humor… and yes, making people laugh.

Technical book

I never knew that working as a comedian requires this
much effort and work. This book goes into deep technical details. If you are planing to be a comedian, this book could help!

Helpful

The reason I bought this book is to work on my jokes. It brings up good points such as avoiding offensive jokes. Though I'm a fan of irreverent and raunchy humor, I can't bring myself to use it in daily life. It's better to keep it clean.

Found it superficial, exterior help. No real action steps that can create real changes in yourself to be funny.

I would say 3.5 stars. Good confidence builder & reminder we don’t have to be super vile to be a comedian or make people laugh.

Too generic and not as fun, but contains observations on how jokes are made.

A waste of time!
Just drivel. Not even edited well.
Not even a good synopsis of current information on the subject.
Do not bother with it.
