With Ranger now a permanent fixture, much to Meg's chagrin (growing pains, amirite?), Vigilante's expanding team has relocated to the city proper of Malus itself. But this just leads to more difficulties, when yet another mysterious stranger gets up in Meg's space with a riddle, unruly and oversized snakes (why did it have to be snakes?) begin appearing where they don't belong, and a villain-turned-hero comes out of the woodwork. She didn't start the fire, but now it's her problem to put it out.
Meg just got tossed in the deep end, and it's sink or swim because shit's about to hit the fan.
He couldn’t understand being Vengeance. It’s not always avenging the innocents; vengeance is in the petty, the selfish, the jealous. It’s in the rage and fury that comes from being side-lined, abandoned, disregarded. It sounds like it should be associated with justice, but they’re nothing alike. Often, you’ll find vengeance in the small things, the ones that seem inconsequential.
What a wonderful follow up to Fear and Fury and Torment and Tarnish! Thankfully no Rat Kings or zombies in this one, but we do get an intriguing new take on the Greek Gods and ancient snake monsters. (Oh no, not the SNEKZ!) I loved the backstory that came with this one and the reveal about Meg’s powers and history.
Ranger - whomst I wanted to smack in da noggin in book two - did improve in this book. Okay, I’m willing to stand corrected, ha! It helped that he was protective and not flirty with Meg in this one instead. Once he stopped flirting with her and boundary stomping and just became a bro, he became a much, much better dude. And when he jumped into protective mode after Bacchus and the river, etc. The scene when he finds her after Poseidon fully won me over. I CAN ADMIT I CHANGED MY MIND LMAO.
I loved all the Meg/Greg moments in this one. Poor Greg is going to give himself grey hair if he has to keep dealing with all the people messing with her. Bless his weary heart. I love that my OTP is finally engaged and they’re being all cute and shit. I LOVE THEM, YOUR HONOUR. Further, as someone who very much agrees with Meg on avoiding all the wedding fracas and brouhaha, I hope they get their quiet moment. Greg’s little suggestion at the end was just adorable.
Greg’s family need to chill like 600%. When you’ve got the brother with a blabber mouth, the judgemental mother and the sisters who want a splashy wedding, Flightpath fast became my favourite of his kin, ha! And he seemed to actually want to get to know them and cared about their relationship whereas it seemed like Greg’s brother and mother wanted to break them up. Not cool. I hope we get more Flightpath and Greg bonding moments in the next book. I was feeling quite bad for him when he was talking about his sons’ rejection! :(
Maniac is a fun new addition and I’m excited to have her as part of the crew. And Virgil is, as ever, the adorable long suffering father-figure to them all and I love him. Really love the whole team now (yes, even Ranger, ha!).
As per my standard reviews for this series I have to say: Virgil remains the absolute best and I love him. Also, he's been having a bad couple of days so maybe don't push him too far, okay?
This book was amazing. I was beyond lucky enough to read an advance copy and.. wow. You aren't ready. But you could be. So make sure you (re)read the first two books before June is preparation for this because.. I will feel bad for you otherwise.
There isn't a lot I can say about this book's plot without ruining the earlier books. Or this one. Because once I get started, you aren't going to be able to shut me up. Let's just say, somehow, the stakes have risen. Things have gotten intense and there are more players on the field than before. Oh, and there's family drama. I feel like that's okay to mention. Greg's got a weird family and I don't envy Meg having to navigate that tangle.
Best part of this book for me? The banter. Jamie Jackson's banter is always great but she knocked it out of the park in this book. I laughed.. a lot. But it's not all giggles. There were serious moments and some real character growth. Speaking of growth.. Ranger continues to grow on me. I sort of resent it. I wanted to not like him for completely personal and stupid reasons but.. ugh. I like him, okay? I'll be sad if anything happens to him.
I am completely invested in this story and would like the rest of the series in my eyeballs right this second. Please and thank you.
Scorn and Sorrow was fantastic. Greg and Meg’s relationship is on a freaking a roller coaster when Greek gods start popping up left and right. Our rag-tag team of heroes are put through the ringer while dealing with villains, mythical creatures, and being left homeless in the wake.
I’ll say, having to deal with a Pantheon of gods as Demi-mortals, the playing field is hardly fair. Somehow, our likable band of misfits makes come through…or do they?
I’m eager for Deception and Damage to find out what Poseidon’s end game is gonna be and how it’s going to effect the gang.
I just love this series! I was so happy when I saw that a third book was being released. These books are just so fun and engrossing. They have adventure and action while, somehow still staying light enough that I don’t have nightmares all night long. The characters are so interesting too. This author really has a knack for creating interesting characters that you really root for and each book brings us someone new. The love story between Meg and Greg is really sweet too. Thank you for sharing your words with the world.
From start to finish this book does NOT let go, and sucked me in page after page after page. I felt like I was right there along for the ride (good or bad) with Meg and the rest. And like the two previous books, this ended and I just wanted MORE.
I love Meg's snark and sarcasm, as well as Virgil. I want to give Greg all the hugs. I still want to punch Ranger, but maybe not AS much? Hard to tell. But I also like the new character added to the team as well. The banter between the team is top notch pretty much all the time and it never, ever grows old.
Book 3 in Jackson's series is a fantastic adventure! Follow Meg and Greg as they navigate their romance, superhero life, and quirky, unusual friends. Even domestic life isn't easy when you've got super powers, but when you throw gods into the mix... watch out!
I've been with this series since book 1 and highly recommend it for anyone. Just anyone.
An interesting conflation of the ancient super hero tales, ie Greek gods, and the modern. Well-written, strongly depicted characters that are easy to visualise, good storylines, and convincing dialogue - and the sex scenes don't make you want to cringe and owe nothing to Mills and Boone type bodice-rippers. An enjoyable read, I look forward to the sequels.
I love Greek Mythology and there is so much more in here than the other two books. Ranger definitely grew on me and is suddenly adorable. (Curse you, Jamie!) But this definitely ups the stakes from the other two books. I cannot wait for book 4.
(You) couldn’t understand being Vengeance. It’s not always avenging the innocents; vengeance is in the petty, the selfish, the jealous. It’s in the rage and fury that comes from being side-lined, abandoned, disregarded. It sounds like it should be associated with justice, but they’re nothing alike. OK, time for one of those open and honest reviews. First, "Scorn & Sorrow", part 3 of the AoaVLH series, struck me as having a very random, almost haphazard story-line. I'm honestly having trouble trying to suss out how we've progressed and how everything has changed from way back in Book 1, Page 1. And I can't even begin to work out - YET - how all this is going to eventually (???) connect to where we wind up and, this is key, somehow make sense.
The gods are returning.
One minute we're dealing with gods or at very least various creatures from Greek mythology (even though some of us think the Norse were the ones that had it right), which reminded me more than a little of that opening scene in Hellboy 2 in the museum. However, in the next we have issues with other heroes, family members and, gasp, even villains popping on the scene looking to make our team go kablooey and all bleedy on us. Oh, and it should also be noted that we've not yet had ANY indication of what Vengeance's parents had to say to the media despite that being a big cliffhanger from even the earlier part of Book 2. As such, I would have preferred not only a little more focus but also a lot more all-out ass-kickery versus some of the bits we spend too much time on (imho), often re-hashing (for example) insecurities and/or family issues over moving things ahead. Put it this way: Greg really REALLY needs to grow up!
Did we create the mortals, or did they create us?
Yes, I get that the life of a REALISTIC super-hero (wow, did I actually say that?) is quite frantic and unplanned but our crew's day-to-day bits in this one had my head spinning. All of it must be fraught with the constant need to provide the service to the public one's powers almost require and yet also stay sane. And yes, some of the fighting stuff was pretty fun, if not rushed (oh wow, that Gorgon scene had so much more potential!). This was particularly the case in dealing with the Hydras (no, not the ones from Captain America) in what was definitely NOT the Museum of Natural History (hint: GO THERE and DO NOT rely on the movie for any experience with same!) or the absolute glory that is Central Park. Which this wasn't.
I died, but I got better.
I also have to admit I wasn't crazy about a scene or even two that had one of our protagonists literally hiding in the bushes, which yes, is kind of spoil-y but not really. But needs must as they say (I've forgotten the actual saying so just play along, ok?). Sure I can even accept the random flashbacks to ancient Greece (or is it?) which added some unique tension to the situation. But at some point, well, just at some point, ok? I was just getting too much of a 'all this and the kitchen sink, too' vibe as we headed through (will the photographer reappear in Book 4?). And for a relatively short book - albeit part of a series - that makes it all the more jarring when we have to change paces, places, and more! It leaves very little to hang your hat on - or cape, your call.
I could hear it in his voice, the fear that he would have to choose between saving me and saving innocents.
All-in-all, still a good book even though it was definitely not my favorite of the series. I do think these are great characters that we're learning more about as we move along. And yes, some unique and interesting things are popping up for our super-powered friends to deal with. Again, I just felt there wasn't SUFFICIENT focus on the issues at hand and definitely not enough fleshing out of scenes that had real potential for more. Finally, the ending here in Part 3 wasn't nearly as… organic? as the ones that have come before. I just wasn't crazy about what I felt was an abrupt and far too vague scenario that ended with our team… camping. No, really. But on to Book 4. Let's hope we have the camping out of our systems by then...
The gods return to Earth and bring the monsters of legend back with them. Last time it was giant rats this time it's giant snakes! Greg's family issues are explored as he tries multiple times to propose. And another hero joins the team who was a former villain. A book that really brought forward the various arcs in interesting ways.
