I really like Peter Turnbull's police procedurals. They're short (less than 200 pages) but very satisfying.

When a prostitute is murdered up a back ally in the streets of Glasgow it starts a comprehensive search for her killer by the Glasgow Police Force.
For the Glasogow detectives, convinced he/she will strike again, it is a race against time.
This book gives a vivid detail of every angle and step the different police officers take to bring the killer to justice and of the lives of those that were in any way connected to the victim.
It is very authentic, and brings to life the established police proceedings and the committment to duty of everyone involved.
It was very interesting.
