Jarrett Family Saga #1

Sweet Autumn Surrender

Rate this book
SHE WANTED PEACE
For a woman who hated violence, Ellie Jarrett had seen more than her share. First her husband was murdered and now her neighbor was trying to run her off her ranch. The last thing the golden-haired beauty needed was a gun-slinging brother-in-law to stir up more trouble. But it wasn't just Kale Jarrett 's six-guns that made Ellie nervous... it was the way she felt whenever he was near. If the tall, lean gunman's piercing blue gaze could make her tremble with anticipation, how would she ever resist the masterful caresses and sweet kisses that she somehow knew would follow?

HE THRIVED ON DANGER
His brother's widow was a fine woman...too fine for the likes of Kale Jarrett. With her silky blond hair and sparkling hazel eyes, Ellie deserved a man she could love forever, not some irresponsible drifter who carried his belongings in his saddlebags and always watched his backtrail. Kale would stay long enough to see Ellie safe, then he'd be out of her life. But he couldn't leave without tasting the lush promise of her lips, without knowing the satiny texture of her skin, without feeling her warm and soft beneath him in

Vivian Vaughan is the granddaughter of Texas ranchers and Texas Rangers. She grew up on the western edge of the Edwards Plateau, where there has always been a scarcity of water and grass – and an abundance of self-reliance, a place where people don’t take themselves too seriously and laughter comes naturally. Vaughan’s books reflect her love of the land, the people and their stories. Vivian lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband of fifty-four years, a retired NASA engineer. Their two sons, two lovely daughters-in-law (one from England; the other Mexico) and five of their 6 grandchildren live nearby.

This was a true western with gunslingers, painted ladies, rustlers and gamblers. Ellie Langstrom hoped she'd left her bad luck behind when she married gentle Benjamin Jarrett. Tending to their ranch and trying to master the domestic skills she never learned growing up keeps her busy and content. She never dreamed there was more to love and marriage than what the gentle older man offered her. One day she finds her husband's body on the porch steps, and his killers begin trying to drive her out of her home by any means necessary. Desperate for help, she telegraphs for Benjamin's brother, a Texas Ranger.

Kale Jarrett arrives in answer to the telegram, not the Texas Ranger with the weight of the law behind him, but a gunslinger with a reputation that other men can't help challenging. Kale is running from the army after critically injuring a soldier, and he arrives at Ellie's ranch just in time to help her fight a barn fire set by the men trying to drive her out. Another kind of fire lights between them, and Ellie and Kale struggle to fight the attraction between them while they fight to save the ranch.

I enjoyed reading this one, I thought the characters were well fleshed out and the writing was good. I wasn't able to figure out the mystery early in the book which kept me interested throughout. There were quite a few "misunderstandings" in the book to drive the romantic plot along. There are explicit sex scenes, but they aren't graphic. I thought the romance was a bit rushed, not even 24 hours or 3 conversations pass before Ellie realizes she's in love. A few of my pet peeves appear in the book. At one point Kale tells Ellie to stay away because he doesn't want her to fall in love with him, which is a serious bit of conceit! But it was a good romance and western that will go in my reread pile.

This book sounded very good on the cover. However after getting into about 4 chapters it started getting boring. There was not enough story to get me interested in the characters and the plot was very thin. I figured out what was going on by chapter 5. I did finish the book but skimmed about 50% of it. Won't be reading any other of this authors books.

It was a decent book. Relatively light read that works if you want to enjoy a story where you can easily be interrupted and then return to the book. Hero was a little sketchy on commitment and the heroine was a little clingy at times.

I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. This was a good western as much as a romance. I got a little lost in the last quarter of the book as the heros is tracking one villain and being tracked by another. The geography led me astray. There were a couple of explicit love scenes in the book. The book is loosely based on historical facts and historical places in West Texas. I enjoyed the book.

Great Story

Kudos to this author. Her story has all the right elements that keep a reader turning the page. A rather complex plot of bad guys vs. the lady and her hero. Add in a bit of real history, and you will feel a bit educated about American history.
