Alex Kade, Shanan Sullivan, and four college friends are taking a much-needed break from their studies at UCLA film school. The winter vacation is just what they need to recharge their batteries, miles from the pressures of college life and deep within the Colorado Rockies.
But when a devastating EMP knocks out all communication and sends the modern US back to a time more akin to the 1800s, they soon discover that their influential parents can’t help them, and a zero-limit credit card is of little use when you are fighting for survival.
For Alex and Shanan, engaged in the same hotel two years previously, there is only one answer to their problem and that’s to set off for North Texas, and a home they don’t even know still exists.
There are many dangers to be faced along the way and not everyone is looking for safety. Some see it as an opportunity, with law and order breaking down, to kill and cause mayhem and it isn’t long before the small group is drawn into the orbit of a nefarious killer.
But there is hope too. Shanan’s father, a high-ranking Colonel in the US Army, is ready to do whatever it takes to save his daughter and her friends, even if it means breaking the whole rule book in the process.
It’s going to be a long road home.

Great beginning.
A fabulous start, I totally loved it but then the last few chapters when the Mayor was more involved it was almost farcical and I really struggled to finish it. Initially, the characters were great and played their part well until it all fell apart at the end.

inconsistent
I started out really enjoying this book but then as I got further into it, not so much. Some of the characters were good, but the story had SO many inconsistencies. To start with, after Trey a) attacked his girlfriend b) shot at his friends, then c) stole everyone’s food, the rest of the group didn’t kick him out. Then noticed that the timelines of the different characters didn’t match. The final straw was the mess with the mayor and the sheriff. A sheriff doesn’t work for the mayor, he is the top-ranking elected official of a county. The mayor works for the city. Then he’s locked up, but escapes because no one is guarding him and someone has a key? C’mon man!

Having read plenty of apocalyptic books, I expected this one to be no different so I settled in a comfortable chair and opened the book. As for the plot, it wasn't much different than any of the others. But the writing was good so I continued. I was disappointed because the main characters were college kids (I'm 67, and my college days are way back in the past). But as I said, the writing was good so I continued reading. This book is easy to read and floats easily from one scene/crisis to another. The description of the environment and atmosphere was very well-written.
At this point in time, the series is only 3 books long so if the price is right, I may buy them all but it's only because this book was so good.

Absolutely Love the writing of Lance K. Ewing.
This book is Fantastic. I Love the characters and how well written they are. The story is about survival after an EMP strike, which crippled the U.S.
I have enjoyed the story and will begin book 2
after i finish this review. The story really makes you think of how unprepared we can be if everything we depend on is gone, including our families. Be prepared to smile, cringe, even cry, but you wont be disappointed.

From the very first page, this story plays like a movie in your mind. Ewing’s background in storytelling shines through every scene the dialogue crackles with authenticity, the pacing is spot-on, and the Colorado wilderness feels alive. When the world goes dark, so does the comfort of safety, and what’s left is a gripping, emotional road trip for survival. If you’re a fan of The Last of Us or One Second After, you’ll love this.

A good beginning
A good beginning to Ewing's new series. Set in the same world as the 'Families First' series. The start was a little slow, but picks up as the story unfolds. A whole different set of happenings/circumstances for fresh group of characters.
Pretty sure I wouldn't doing as well under the same conditions!

Interesting story poorly told
Ewing writes well, good plot and likeable characters but after first few chapters he loses his way with a psychopath and power hungry mayor. Somewhat lacking about weapons and tactics.

I love reading Mr. Ewings books
I like how he develops his characters. Some you like some you do without. But then it wouldn't be believable if all the characters were nice. I would recommend to anyone.

Is this really a survival book?
I started reading this genre of books hoping to find different ways to find food, avoid mobs of people, etc. Instead, I found that the survival plot was just an excuse to introduce as many different examples of violence as possible.

Long Road Home : Book 1
Enjoyed the book greatly, starts of with apocalyptic event but I think the author forgot the event 3/4 way through that’s why only 4 stars, the mayor thing just made it into a thriller, hopefully book 2 will be different.

Loved his other series Families First so was excited to start this and it didn’t disappoint. Similar plots to last series but great characters. Very readable, looking forward to the next in the series.

Unexpected
Really enjoyed reading this story. It is a well written storyline with very believable characters. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy this type of genre.
