Created by the alchemist Braxton, Levi was “born” fully grown and spends his early days learning about the monster-filled kingdom he calls home.

Even though he is just a construct pieced together from cloned parts, Levi longs to fit in with his mythical neighbors, but more than that, he wishes he could say two words to the Shadow King without stuttering.

Ashmedai has been king of what was once the Amethyst Kingdom since it was cursed a thousand years ago. Only he and Braxton know what truly happened the night of the curse, and Ash’s secret makes walking among his beloved people painful, so he rarely leaves his castle. However, with Festival Day approaching, Ash wouldn’t mind going out more often... if it means seeing more of Levi.

Ash wishes he deserved the longing looks from those strangely familiar violet eyes. He knows no one could love him after learning the truth of the curse. But if anyone can change his mind, it is the sweetly stitched young man who looks at him like he hung the moon.

“Let me reassure you,” Ashmedai said, “you are wonderfully unique, Levi, like everyone in the Dark Kingdom, but unique in a way all your own.”
“Isn’t that strange?”
“I suppose it is.” Ashmedai chuckled again. “You simply need to stop thinking that strange is a bad thing.”

How is it that every last chapter of the books from this series makes me crave the next one even more? I love the way the next MCs are presented in a brief but intriguing way, showing their personalities and the tropes that the next installment is going to have.
Compared to the previous one, here the story is focused more on the romance, making it sweet and with less troubles between the MCs. There’s a little bit of action but, then again, most of the book is about love and not only in a romantic way. A community living under a curse for a thousand years, where they had to make adjustments to survive but still everyone has each other’s back was so wholesome to read about.

description

I cannot put into words how sweet was the relationship between Levi and Ash. I started a little bit slow but it was expected with Levi being created not long ago and Ash pushing people away and living alone in his castle for centuries. Not gonna lie, I had to check book one because there were some things I didn’t remember that were mentioned there, but after doing that a lot of things started to make sense.

description

Fantasy and fairytales. A wholesome installment full of ‘monsters’ proving that love can overcome even a curse. There are still other kingdoms to explore and I can’t wait to do it.

4.25 stars Ashmedai is the ruler of the Shadow Lands, once the Amethyst Kingdom, that was before the curse. His skin is white, his hair long and ebony black, pointed ears, sharp teeth, and nails like claws.
The Shadow Lands has no days anymore, only nights.

Levi is a creation, he wasn’t born, he was stitched together. He’s very shy and has to learn to interact, his creator, the alchemist Braxton, gives him tasks to learn.
Every time Levi sees Ash the Shadow King, he thinks he’s beautiful, so opposite of himself.
Ash doesn’t see what Levi sees, he sees a shy guy, with violet eyes like… strange familiar?

Assisting Ash with the activities for the festival gives Levi a chance to be closer to him.
It’s not only Ashmedai who thinks Levi is special.

The citizens of Ash’s Kingdom are friendly and understandable. Ash is afraid if they know the truth behind the curse, this Kingdom would be different!

Levi’s creator is powerful and knows how to use the gems, he’s the only one who could lift the curse from this Kingdom.

There’s a sweet slow-burn romance, besides that there were also some monstrous moments, quite entertaining!!
The scenery is exquisitely described, I can’t even begin to tell about the atmosphere and all those creatures, I was stunned by them. How the author combined everything was absolutely amazing.
A wonderfully written story, captivating, enthralling, and with original content.

Stitches by Amanda Meuwissen is the second book in the Gemstone Kingdom series. It's a fantasy romance in the style of fairytales but with a much darker tone. It can be read as a stand alone but reading The Prince and the Ice King first will give a better experience and understanding for this one.

Much like the first book, the world building and lore has been great. The details and the explanation about the curse, why the kingdom has been plunged in eternal night and everything else are complex enough to be interesting but not too lore heavy that it can be chore to go through.

I really liked how the general atmosphere of the story is gloomy and a bit eerie and amidst of all that a glimmer of hope, kindness and perseverance pervades in the way that the denizens of this kingdom live their lives.

The relationship between Levi and Ash is rather sweet. They are so good for each other and I really adore Levi. He is such a kind-hearted being who despite living in place where being unique and strange is the norm still found himself feeling like an outsider. His character growth in trying to find who he truly is and learning to accept himself was a joy to read. Having Ash by his side supporting him made it easier for him to transcend that feeling of otherness as well as to find the love that he truly deserves.

Just a random thing that made me snort with laughter was Ash's full name being Ashmedai. How ironic and utterly fitting considering the lore behind that name.

The story is never boring and the pacing is just right. It has enough twists and turns to keep one interested and the action and drama drive the plot forward in a good way. I recommend giving this story go.

This would be a 4.25 stars out of 5 stars for me.

The blurb well describes the story but it doesn't do justice to the book. I don't think any blurb could. You enter into a world of bleakness and it opens up, slowly becoming happy and joyous - so much so that I didn't want to leave it and my opinion was shared by the world. Sounds strange I know but you'll have to read it to appreciate it. Total mind movie - fantastic characters! This is part of a series but reads well as a standalone. But, oh, that teaser for the next one. Can't wait!
ARC provided by the author and I thank her for the opportunity to read this wonderful book.

With this second story in the Tales from the Gemstone Kingdoms series, the author once again delivers an intriguing tale filled with a complex plot that keeps you wondering throughout the book. Wondering about the true story behind the Amethyst Kingdom’s curse, how the curse will be broken, Levi’s existence, what happened in Ashmedai’s past that causes him such sadness, and what exactly Braxton is doing to help break the curse.

I absolutely adored Levi. He views the world through a fresh lens since he was recently created, giving his character a sense of innocence. He’s sweet, kind, and sees others without prejudice or preconceived notions based on their physical forms. He has his own shyness to overcome, and thanks to the wonderful people around him that is a hurdle he easily handles. Ashmedai (Ash) complements him perfectly, and despite his internal struggles is an excellent leader of the kingdom. The relationship that emerges between them is never rushed, and everything about them together just feels right.

Just when you think you see where the story is going, unexpected revelations and additional twists start popping up. It kept me guessing as I read, and much of the last third of the book it felt like things became more and more complicated…almost too much so. But it definitely keeps you on the edge while reading, and Ash’s unique “other” nature and how it manifests made for some breathtaking scenes.

Stitches was a 4.5-star, very enjoyable read for me, and while you probably could read this story on its own, I’d recommend reading the series in order so you can better understand the references made to the other kingdoms. Fans of fantasy and fairy tale romance will delight in the wide range of quirky characters to be found here; their individually distinct physical characteristics made for some unforgettable images for sure. This book is meant for readers 18+.

Levi, pieced together from human parts, very unsure of his place in this new reality as a stitched together man. Ash, a king ashamed to be out among his people because of the curse he caused.

This book was one of the most original I’ve read. A land of constant twilight with no sun. Peopled with a strange conglomeration of monster like beings. Under a curse that has lasted a thousand years. I loved the variety of “monsters”. Their humanity shining through their appearances. Personalities were well defined and very likable.

The writing was excellent and world building was seamlessly woven into the story. The love story of Levi and Ash wasn’t rushed but was very steamy.

This book definitely hit my re-read list and will likely be in my top ten for the year.

So this book was fun, I'm not going to lie. Two books in the series is good.

However, I do admit it was hard not to notice the glaring similarities in this book to one of my favorite movies.

There is a jackass alchemist.

Said alchemist, who uses a wheelchair, creates a construct, sewn together from the parts and pieces of previous failed constructs. You can see his stitching and everything, like a rag doll.

There is a king whom the people address by name instead of by title, who wanders around like everyone else and does not act much like a king.

The construct is in love with the king and wants to be free and independent of the alchemist.

All the citizens of the kingdom look like monsters, because of a curse.

This is Halloween! This is Halloween!

I don't know if it was by design or by coincidence, and I'm certainly not judging or condemning. It was just hard not to notice when you've watched that movie 5,000 times.

This is the second in the gemstone kingdoms series, I picked this up as I remembered reading and liking the first book a while back (I had to re-read my review to remind myself, it's been a while!). I loved the teaser at the end of the first book for this so was happy to finally get Levi and Ash's story.

I love the writing in this series, the author has created a rich world full of interesting characters and it's so well written I can imagine and see them all in my head, along with the shadow kingdom and I love that I can see it so clearly. Once I started this, I couldn't put it down, I had to know how Levi and Ash's story would unfold.

I loved Levi's character arc, at the start he's so shy and hesitant about the world - no surprise as he's little more than a newborn, really in the beginning. It was wonderful to see him blossom and come into his own and see his character develop as the story moved along. Ash too grows over the course of the story from being almost a hermit and it's wonderful to see. The love between Ash and Levi too never feels rushed, or too soon, it's given time to grow and develop between them even though it's in a relatively short space of time. I never felt things were rushed and I loved that.

There's also a fair bit of heat between the two but again it all felt right. The story fairly moves along and kept me with it the entire way, this is essentially a fairytale and there are all sorts of fairytale elements and I got Sleeping Beauty vibes with the cursed hidden kingdom, along with beauty and the beast, and of course Frankenstein vibes too, all of which I'm assuming are intentional.

Again there was a twist at the end, just when I thought it was all done and it was great. This whole book was a joy to read and now knowing how closely it tied to the first, I am keen to go back and read that too.

Love the little snippets the author gives us for the next book and protagonist, even though this one doesn't seem to have as pure intentions as either Levi in this book, or Reardon in the previous. If it's nearly as good as either of these though, I'll be there for it. I hope to spend more time in the gemstone kingdoms.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

As soon as I saw this book available for an ARC it was an immediate one-click because book 1 hooked me in so much and, thankfully, this one was exactly the same. Amanda Meuwissen has a way of crafting worlds that you just fall into; from the very beginning I was swept along with the characters and became lost in the world-building. There was such creativity because it was familiar yet unique at the same time! Like with book 1, there were hints from recognisable fairytales but the story itself was new and unpredictable.

Levi was such a brilliant character from the outset. Being newly created, it was great to see the world first from his point of view - we got to learn about the Shadowlands as he learnt about it. Ash too was an interesting character and the pair were perfect together. I liked how their relationship didn't develop in isolation, we got to know so many secondary characters in snippets that really brought the whole thing to life. The plot was exciting, well paced and kept me guessing all the way through. The whole thing was also very cleverly written; no spoilers but it was great that it was seemlessly linked back to book one in ways we could only truly see from the end.

Overall, this is another fantastic book in the Gemstone Kingdom series. I would absolutely recommend it to those who like MM romance. It had everything you could possibly want - romance, steamy scenes, an interesting plot, great world building, amazing characters, the list goes on. For me, it has to be 5 stars and I hope the next book isn't too far away as I'm desperate to read that too!

In this second novel in the Gemstone Kingdoms Series, we follow Levi and Ash as they develop a tender relationship and figure out the truth about (breaking) the curse of the Amethyst Kingdom in the meantime.

Levi and Ash had my heart from the beginning. Their courting is so sweet and tender, so fairytale-like. I loved how Levi slowly overcame his shyness and how Ash broke out of his solitude, all because they want to spend time together. Love can change people for the good.
It was so interesting to see how Levi became his own person, discover and deal with his past, and interact with the people around him.

The mystery of the curse remains a mystery until well in the story. Not many hints about it were given, so I wanted to read on to figure it out and was pleasantly surprised when more was revealed.
The story and main characters were interesting enough to hold my attention at all times (in fact, I read the story in one sitting). I needed to know what would happen next!
The story is almost a day-to-day telling of the activities that lead up to the finale, and when that started, I was full with nerves and excitement!

I think the author did a wonderful job with this fantasy novel. I loved Stitches even more than the first book in the series and I will definitely continue reading the series.
For full enjoyment, I recommend reading it as part of the series and not as a stand-alone.

This is for you if you like:
- fantasy, fairytale-retellings or fairytale-like stories with a good dose of romance
- the above without complex world-building, cruel people, torture, assault and those kinds of things; this story is not dark or high-fantasy (but there are some detached or re-attached limbs)
- interesting characters with depth and growth
- sweetness and love
- some sexy times between two male creatures

Stiches just became my favorite book by this author. I was swept away in a realm covered in eternal darkness and inhabited by 'monsters'. The world-building was complex, vividly described and colorful, with a rich cast of characters. The realm's residents were amazingly depicted, each unique and special. Maybe 'monsters' in aspect, yet simply wonderful people, kind and caring.

The centrepoint of the story and what I mostly appreciated about it was the gentle pace of the romance between Levi and Ash. They slowly grew comfortable with each other and had so many sweet, tender moments together, simply enjoying each other's company and getting to know one another, that I couldn't stop myself smiling and swooning. They had an unhurried built-up to physical intimacy and strong feelings, and I adored them together.

There were moments of discovery and fun, scene of fast paced action, hints of danger and the looming threat of the curse over the Amethyst Kingdom, but overall Stitches was a calm, soothing novel. I loved this story with its beautiful, good-hearted 'monsters' and its tender romance. Recommended!

This is set in the same world as The Prince and the Ice King and while you don't really have to read the first one to enjoy this story, they do get a bit tied together at the end. I really enjoyed Stitches and Levi and Ash are very sweet with each other. It doesn't quite feel like a slow burn but the romance isn't rushed either. While I could kind of tell what what going to happen, there were still some twists that I didn't see coming. It's less actiony than the previous story but the pace is still good and the focus is mostly on the main couple with a side of curse breaking. There's lots of loveable side characters that keep the story from getting too dark. I was happy that the conflicts are from outside sources and not between Levi and Ash. Ash definitely gets his much deserved HEA.

That being said, the very last bit sets up for the next one. It can feel a bit cliffhangery but there's a switch to new characters and everything is wrapped up with Levi and Ash. I'm now invested to see what the bigger overarching story line is though and hope to see more information on the next in the series soon!

Stitches by Amanda Meuwissen is book 2 in the Tales of the Gemstone Kingdom series. This was previously published in 2022 but is being released with a new cover. The cover is absolutely gorgeous. It definitely fits the story. I have not read book 1 and was easily able to follow along. However, now I am intrigued by what happened in book 1 so I will be checking it out. Levi is a creation of alchemist Braxton and is learning about the world. Ash is the Shadow King and Levi is drawn to him. The Amethyst Kingdom was very interesting and I loved learning about why the people in the kingdom appeared the way that they did. I absolutely loved Levi. What a kind, caring, and lovable person. He so deserved to be adored by everyone around him. I was a little hesitant to like Ash since he kept comparing Levi to his first love Cullen. Once that was cleared up, I loved these two together. The mystery aspect was interesting and I was pleased with the ending. A really good story that I had a hard time putting down.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. I just love this second book of the Gemstone Kingdoms, because wow the shadow kingdom brings to life Ashmedai and Levi that is so beautifully written along with the denizens. It amazing legendary tales with hilarious and creatures with a magical curse that is just twisted enough with that edge of danger lurking in their lives.
Venturing out in the hustle and bustle of the village was mixed bag of wonder and overwhelming to Levi. After all just because everyone was monsterly different, they all still held a quantity of beauty he feared he would never hold.  When admiring the king from the shadows is over, a wish is fulfilled.  What was turning out to be a beautiful awakening reality is about to be sinisterly snatched from them, Can Ashmedai learn the truth before it's to late? When the Levi is trapped in darken world, only looking out at what is lost to him.

This was cute AF. I was really looking forward to this one ever since we got the sneak peak of it at the end of the first book in the series The Prince and the Ice King. This author jumps around and writes multiple series at once instead of completing one and then moving on to another. Hey whatever works for their muse they must follow. However, that means it's been 8 months since I read that little snippet so when I saw this one come up for review I was definitely excited.

Levi was such an innocent little sweetie pie. He may have been made up of stitched together parts, but he was his own person and he had a huge heart. I love how he would get all shy around Ash, whom is King of the Dark Kingdom. The Dark Kingdom was formally known as the Amethyst Kingdom and in this book we find out the truth of what happened to curse all it's inhabitants into looking like Monsters all while plunging their world into darkness.

I enjoyed the romance between Ash and Levi and I loved all the fun townspeople. You would think after what happened to them the inhabitants would be unhappy and bitter, yet they persevered. Some even found love and had children. It's a testament to the kind of people they were before being cursed. Though they were cursed into darkness, they held onto their light.

As with book one there were secrets to discover. I did see one of them coming, but it did not take away my enjoyment. The author was clever in their foreshadowing and even when I thought they were done there was one more surprise to be had near the end.

It seems curses are a running theme in this series and world. Also Like book 1, the end of this one gives a sneak peek at the next. However unlike the first 2, it doesn't appear our MC has good intentions in his heart. My interest is piqued and I can't wait to discover which theme and Kingdom we get to visit next.

Sweet Romance, Fascinating World to Explore
Stitches is really interesting. The world building was totally different from anything I’ve read, and really drew me in. The blurb is spot on, so I won’t go into detail on plot, but suffice it to say that it has a few twists, some drama, secrets that need unraveling, and two lost souls finding their way to each other.
I did not read the first book in the series – but I will now! I didn’t feel like I was missing anything critical; however, I could tell that some reveals would have been more exciting had I read the books in order.

Stitches is the second book in the Tales from the Gemstone Kingdoms series. Each book can be read as a standalone but in my opinion the series is best read in order. This is the story of Levi and Ash (Ashmedai) the Shadow King. The book is a little slow to start but that is to be expected when you consider that Levi was only recently created by Braxton. I loved the dark fairytale feel of this story. The world building and characters are outstanding. I loved the chemistry between Levi and Ash. Levi is such a sweet guy and Ash is just the perfect partner for Levi. I loved the twists and turns we go through in the story. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

Indigo shadows

“You are not darkness. You’re shadow, and shadow cannot exist without light.” I love the dark, enticing worlds that Amanda Meuwissen builds. They pull me in and keep me guessing about what’s really happening and how it will all play out. The Amethyst Kindgom is no different as this monstrous oasis hides a darkness deep within, but Levi and Ash, though they reside here, are all light. Levi’s sweet shyness and Ash’s reticent kindness drew me in as they were drawn to each other. They’re completely adorable and their slow-burn but heated romance is all heart. I’m having so much fun uncovering all the mysteries of Gemstone Kingdoms and the stinger at the end of this has me ready to on another fantastical adventure.

Monsters show themselves in action

I feel like I'll be saying this a lot with this series; I adored this story. As someone who sometimes feels judged or on the outside, I'm always going to love stories that remind us to dig deeper. I don't usually like when the love interests fall in love too quickly, but everything that happened with Levi and Ash felt right, sweet, cozy. I knew something, or rather, someone in Amythst kingdom couldn't be trusted, but the final battle was still captivating. The resolution also offered more nuance and true acceptance than I originally anticipated.

Huh. That was very different and unique. The ending felt weird and a bit cartoonish. The main couple I didn't really vibe with either for some reason. but overall I liked the story. The uniqueness more than made up for it all. Excited for the next book :)

A solid 4.5.
This book has elements of both Frankenstein and Beauty and the Beast. One of the main characters, Levi, is a construct of cloned parts, even showing stitches on various parts of his body. The story also deals with loving someone regardless of their appearance.
I definitely enjoyed this story. The world building was fascinating, and I loved reading about this fantasy land that our characters live in. This book references book 1 a couple of times, but it really isn’t necessary to read the first book to enjoy this. I actually wish there was more connection from the first book to tie the series together better.
I didn’t like this book as much as the first, but I still really liked it (a 4.5 vs a 5). Levi was such a sweet, innocent character that you can’t help but root for and get excited when he succeeds. Ash was his perfect match.
The ending was HEA, and it included, as part of the epilogue, what will likely be the basis of the next novel in the series.

What an interesting world and a lovely book! Levi and Ash are simply magical together. My heart went out to both of them as this story went on. I love this story and all of its characters. I also loved the whole “monsters” aspect of this story. What really makes a monster or a demon? I also loved how Levi slowly came to figure out who he is and what he wants for himself, despite having been “created.” It took me longer than it should have to figure out part of the plot on this one. Yes, I am ashamed of myself, especially as much as I enjoyed the first book in this series. I enjoyed it.

I had to read this one again and it was just as good as I remembered!
