I mean, I don’t do well reading just the comic issues. I need the graphic novel to come on out to see how I really feel. At this point I’m not sure I’m going to keep my physical copies. I mean I’m over so many things regarding books right now that I just don’t know.

AND, I’m delusional because I keep hoping that skull isn’t THE skull. Sigh and shit!!

'Because she is not a girl, you insufferable prick. She is an idea, one that can still undo the fabric of our entire way of life.'

OOOOOOOOH shit the ending just set my Saga anxiety on full because I don't doubt Vaughan would actually do that to us and I would reaaaaaaaally prefer that to not happen. But, for a short issue this one was fantastic. We got a new character who I quite enjoy, especially the art design, so naturally I assume they will meet a terrible end, we see Hazel and Squire jam, and some tensions become more tense. Also the return of Special Agent Wings whom I keep wondering where they've been. And I gotta say, I've come to really like Bombazine. So yea, this is on track to be an amazing Saga arc and now I'm already impatient for the next issue.

A kind of transitional issue, which I say to avoid the word "filler," but it will still not prevent me from erecting a monument to Brian K. Vaughn in Cleveland for this series. Opening scenes focus on band practice--"You gotta bleed for what you love" with Haze and her bro working on developing their guitar and drums chops. The image of Haze and her teacher making the same gesture together at one point is priceless, and will make an adorable poster.

Mom is off doing her necessary work for the Skip to keep her family alive--go ahead and judge--and meets a widower--her buyer--whom you also may be inclined to judge. Are these people monsters? Not to Vaughn, nor ever to you if you have been through trauma. But her (admittedly crude) response to the widower, who admits he has never really been a reader, will make all readers snort with appreciation.

Meanwhile, back at the ship, Bombazine is taking care of the kids, though we learn that Skip knows he has a more complicated past. We don't know what that past is yet, but it's a kind of narrative threat (to him, and to Vaughn's readers). As is the thread where the intended killing of Hazel--the "mixed" girl continues, all across the universe:

". . . because she's not a girl. . . She's an idea, one who can still undo the fabric of our whole way of life."

One can only hope. And hope that yet another cliffhanger threat will not come true.

“… Because she is not a girl, you insufferable prick. She is an idea, one that can still undo the fabric of our entire way of life.”

Welp, for half a second I had forgotten what the stakes are here. My bad.

Honestly, not much happens in this issue. A lot of building and setting the stakes. Some new players. But while that would have made it quite the ordinary issue the emotional stakes and some return to form really helped it be more interesting than expected.

And yet, it was interesting in all the ways I had not expected it to be.

“There no such thing as natural talent. There’s just work, work, and even more…”

I am not at all calm about this. I've been having the worst gut feelings about it all and knowing that I am about to find out what will happen does not help in the least.

At this point, I don't even dare to hope.

Enjoyable read, but so little happened! A couple of things DID, and I'm interested to see what happens next.

Read 5.2.22.

Removed read dates so this doesn't count towards my yearly reading challenge.

Is it me or do the single issues feel shorter and shorter?

What do you have to do to become really good at something?

3-EA727-CE-C9-B4-4-AF1-8086-D34-DE8-BB9-D7-B

And how do you deal with the loss of a loved one longterm? And everybody trying to get you?

I am so glad that someone told me that the words in blue are in Esperanto! And that I can get translations online!

The story is picking up slowly, but surely...however this is nowhere near how much fun-action-packed the first few volumes were...
I miss the Prince and Marko :'(

I feel closer to my mother the older I get as well. Age and grief are odd like that.

“Sorry, I’m not much of a reader.”
“Whew, the one sentence that instantly dries up my vagina.” Hahaha! So not a lot happens in this but it had some excellent stand out moments.

Another…
“Do you even know what the definition of insanity is?
“Sure, the old cliche: “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”
“Which has nothing to do with mental illness. That’s the definition of practice.”

Well played Mr. Vaughan, well played.

Another great issue. We learn that Bombazine has a terrible secret that the Skipper has found out about. Plus someone has just been tasked with not only killing Alana and her kid, Hazel but everyone they’ve ever met.

Ugh, filler. This was disappointing considering that this would've been the time to ramp things up instead of slow them down. Only two things of consequence happen; plot that could have been covered in three pages is dragged to thirty-three. But I've been wrong about filler before, and I hope I'm proved wrong again, despite how boring this was to read.

Also, there was one part that made me go "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaar" (groaning in Hindi, lol). Saga has been a pretty woke comic and it usually doesn't feel like it's trying hard to be. Here, however, the ham-fisted telling over showing made me roll my eyes. This is not a spoiler: In a scene where a new character uses the word lame, Bombazine asks them to avoid ableist language. It would have had weight if the character was allowed to look at Bombazine's peg leg and reconsider their words rather than being scolded pointedly. Didacticism has no place in a comic for adults, anyway.

The last page made me smile, regardless, even if we only get glimpses of our dearly beloved yet-to-reappear characters. BRING THEM BACK! (She screams into the void.)

Another short issue that works to set up the action that we know is coming. I enjoyed a few shocking twists that left me wanting to know what's going to happen next and I am very excited to see where Hazel's new love for music will go. Fans won't be disappointed with this one and I'm just eagerly waiting for MORE!!

Squire is talking again! Fiona has found herself a trusted confidante. Also, Petrichor and Ghüs are in danger too now, girl. 😣

3,5/5. Just good enough to keep me in. I was expecting to drop it, but the last two issues slightly getting better and better, we get back on our feet, we get the feeling of the old Saga, before the interruption and I find myself getting back into the story, so I will continue on, at least for a couple more issues.

There is something so bittersweet about reading a comic as individual issues are released. You have something to look forward to, and you know Vaughan and Staples will never disappoint, but comic issues are so short! Really just whistle whetters.

Here's to another wait...
