Bit of a filler issue, but that’s to be expected as it’s sliding the pieces into play. I hope Bombazine reappears more and the Brobot and Hazel thing has some good comedic potential. This does have some zingers of one-liners though.

Beautiful cover, too bad for the fish in the book. I miss B now. I miss the hair. I’m glad the skull is gone. I might trade all of the graphic novels in. I just don’t know anymore. To be honest, I want the series to be over and I want the graphic novel to read it all at once to decide if I want to trade them in. I think I’ll keep my lying cat Funko either way 😏 Also, Brobot! Love it 😂🤣. And she said shart!! Yes, I’m 12!

Amazing art in ever new directions for Fiona. Just, wow, cool fish! Mom returns, with a new (bad) haircut, having made her pay day. And the band is breaking up, seems like, with change being constant, and you know, that's what bands do (cf Get Back, on the Beatles). Yeah, the bad guys are still trying to kill off our Alana, so maybe a change will do us all good. But the fish figures in here. Oh, and Brobot reveals a secret to Haze which may have amusing implications. Filler, or transitional issue, only 31 pages, and I read it as soon as I saw it.

“So what, you’re condemning yourself to this rotted-out warehouse because you feel guilty? About shit you can’t change?”

Ever since the return of this series the issues have been a slow return to a well-known and well-loved world. Charming and reassuring in all the familiar faces and edges but quite disquieting and unbalancing with every unknown. It seems that the gears are revving up with this new part of the story, we're careening out of control.

After a series of false starts I've been waiting quite eagerly for something truly shocking or heartbreaking to happen; bracing myself with each new issue and just getting disappointed every time. So, to see that hope finally being satisfied is quite nice.

Most of what we see here was well between the realm of expectation. Paying out all the build-up that we had seen in small moments. It's not exactly how I imagined it to go, but it does open interesting and worrisome avenues for the story to play with.

If nothing else, that ending was worth all the wait. It is a truly freaky turn of events that feels absolutely appropriate and keeping in tone with everything else this series has always done. Bringing the messiness of life, once again, to a head.

“Going through life solo is no picnic, but it seems like partnerships inevitably lead to trouble. Maybe there’s a reason the word “collaborator” has become synonymous with “war criminal”.

______________

Now, why would you end the issue like that?

"Silly goose. If every drug deal ended bad, nobody would ever be on drugs. And fucking everybody's on drugs".

Man, I'm still realing from how excited I am this comic is coming back out. I too am addicted to the chaos.

And again I say, oh no.

I will also say that we're getting a lot of new characters for the length of the issues, and I'm increasingly glad I chose to wait and read a bunch at once. These stories are fantastic, but they just work better when they're not so splintered.

oh, what in the heck?

1. squire is in love with hazel, which is not the absolute worst if it weren't for the fact that they're (step-)siblings and that hazel simply doesn't feel the same way (probably)

2. i am curious what exactly B (i forgot his name; the first mate of skip now) did in his past that skip had such a huge leverage to put onto him.

Well, that wasn't the most incredible thing to say but he's not wrong. Being around her and the people she moves with hasn't really gone well for anyone they've encountered.

Also, WTF is wrong with her hair?

Another short issue. We get closure on the current plot bunny and there are surprising developments with the crew. Off to new beginnings. Oh yes, and another surprising secret at the end.

i got into saga just as the hiatus started, and getting to read week-to-week issues now is just fucking incomparable. i'm not part of any online or in-person saga discussion, but the community created from the letter section alone is amazing. the story hasn't ramped back up into action yet but i know we're getting there, and i'm happy just to be along for the ride.

Saga 59

In this issue, Alana returns from her drug deal mission, to the pirate spaceship. There, the band is breaking up and there's a lot of conflict. Two of the band members decided to leave with Alana, in order to move to a different planet. On the other hand, Bombazine is forced by the Skipper to stay in the pirate spaceship. At the same time, Gale, who was assigned to kill Alana, Hazel and everyone they know, is getting much closer to them.
This was a very nice issue. While reading it, it felt like not much happen in it, but there are actually some pretty big changes that occur in this issue. Alana and her family leave the pirate space ship, they get separated from Bombazine, the assassin is getting closer to them and at the end there's a pretty big reveal. My favorite part of this issue was the dialogue between Bombazine and Alana, before they got separated. He argued that Alana is a horrible mother. That's a pretty strong argument to make, but it holds up. Undoubtedly, between Marco and Alana, Marco was way more fit to be a parent and since he's now gone, Alana has to do all the parenting by herself, which can be very challenging by itself, but especially for someone with Alana's personality. Other than that, nothing else really stood out to me from this issue. The final reveal was very surprising, but we'll have to wait for the next issue to see what's gonna happen with that. Furthermore, Gale seems like a very interesting character, even though he's presented as a vilain. That's not surprising though, because Brian K. Vaughan has the ability to write great and weirdly likeable vilains.
Overall, this was a pretty good issue, with great dialogues and, as always, incredible artwork by Fiona Staples.

Hello Again,

I have been a Saga fan for a very long time. I have reviews for every issue and volume that come before this on both Goodreads and the blog. But after the Saga break (where the authors took a planned amount of time off), Saga has not felt the same for me. (I am not saying I am not going to read Saga anymore because I absolutely am). But I felt like the issue right before the break, broke me as a massive Saga fan and I am still waiting for them to pick up the pieces. So I will continue on in the series until things look better for the crew. In the meantime, let’s talk about issue 59!

SPOILERS AHEAD

We are back with Hazel and the group. But things are a bit weird now. Their new crewmate and friend has a secret past, that he is trying his best to hide. We also see Hazel stick up for her kind of brother and things go a little sideways for the group of people they met on the other ship.

Since this is issue 59, I wanted to keep my summary a bit vague in case this was your first time hearing about Saga. I definitely still highly recommend this series, I just need the authors to help pick up the pieces from before the break because my heart is still so sad about Marko (I feel like a lot of long-time readers may feel this way). I am planning to grab issue 60 off Hoopla very soon! Let me know in the comments if you have ever tried Saga!

Oh my gosh!!! He told Hazel….!!! I don’t know what she’s gonna say though like what do you say to that situation!!!! Because technically he isn’t…. Definitely not spoiling this! But if you know what I’m talking about I don’t know what I would do in that situation. But I did think it was cute ☺️

OMG that Alana reveal, I—

I love how she was so such a hypeman for Hazel, but Bombazine was needlessly harsh to her.

That ending, though?! Should I be concerned? LOL
